He wasn´t used to fear being caused by beautiful things. It had been so long since he had something important to lose. And now...the feeling catches up whenever he can´t see Jesper for some time.

let’s talk about the shadow and bone s2 ✨controversy✨
here’s my two cents. obviously, beware spoilers ahead.
specifically, this is going to be about how they handled the crows. and as a little disclaimer, you obviously don’t have to agree with me.
what i’ve seen people most upset about is how they took events from crooked kingdom (kaz’s revenge on pekka), or created scenes that somewhat resembled those events (kanej bandage scene, etc) and squashed them into the first four episodes of s2 with no build up. and i can agree that when you view it like that, it’s upsetting and underwhelming.
here’s the thing- i don’t view it like that.
the way i see it, the crows content we got in the first half of season 2 were teasers for what’s to come in their spin-off. a preview for the character development they’re about to go through in their spin-off, and laying groundwork for what’s ahead.
for example, the kanej bandage scene we got in the show was not the bathroom scene from the books. their conversation was not the same and didn’t hold nearly the same weight because it was a conversation from early in six of crows before they had relationship development. what differed was the setting and the actions, but even so, kaz attempting to clean inej’s wounds with his gloves on and telling her simply that pekka rollins killed his brother, having the “tells” convo, WAS NOT kaz opening up about his trauma while pushing himself to clean inej’s wounds without gloves and having that intense intimate moment with her. i keep seeing people say that that WAS the bathroom scene, to which i strongly disagree. what i think will happen is that in the future of the show, we will get the bathroom scene, and we’ll have that on-screen full-circle moment to when kaz was cleaning her wounds in s2 and could barely do so.
and i think that goes for all of the ck-resembling content we got from s2. save for the alby confrontation, which was directly from the books. we did get a version of the slat fight— and based on what i’ve seen with the writer’s talking about the spin-off, we’ll get something equal in emotional weight when the time is right for it. perhaps something with even higher stakes than in the books. because let’s face it, pekka rollins is probably going to be back to haunt kaz. he’s already teaming up with matthias. that guy’s gonna be back, and that’s going to mean something. the new content that will generate is almost like getting six of crows 3 and mixing it into the plot of soc and ck.
and i’m excited for that. i’m excited for the new relationship dynamics we have to work with. inej is getting a taste of her dream going with sturmhond, but we know that isn’t the end for her. she hasn’t had her arc yet where she realizes that she needs to hunt slavers for herself. when she comes back for the six of crows story, it’ll be interesting to see how the realization that something is still missing in her journey to reclaim her life will affect her.
and then there’s kaz, who’s going to be dealing with the realization that revenge is not the end, and like was lightly touched upon in the latter half of the show, he needs to figure out what’s next for him.
and sure, jesper’s getting more comfortable with being a durast where the show leaves him, but what happens when he realizes that his gambling debts have doomed his father? what happens when colm comes back into the picture? those questions from the books are still left unanswered in the show.
wylan in particular i think was done so brilliantly in the show. people were mad that they dropped that he couldn’t read early, but i think it’s genius, because it just leads casual viewers who haven’t read the books away from his other secret even more. people like my mom who haven’t read the books but seen the show just assume that he’s illiterate because he was never taught to read, because he’s presented as just some penniless guy in ketterdam with no money for food. when his true story is revealed, it’ll come as even more of a shock, and put the casual viewer in the same boat as the characters— we thought we knew this guy, but turns out we don’t know him at all. and with wylan and jesper already being in a relationship? something tells me jesper isn’t going to take that well— hence the “merchling” teasing will ensue, and the tension. if anything, their established relationship just ups the stakes. jesper thinking his friend and crush is on the ferolind when it blows up in the books is one thing, but jesper thinking his BOYFRIEND is on the ferolind when it blows up in the show? jesus christ, we aren’t ready for kit young.
what i’m trying to say is, it might help your enjoyment of the show to not view the crows scenes as THE scenes from the books, because with all my heart i don’t think that’s what they are. i’m not saying these “teaser” scenes were necessary, but that goes back to the crows’ inclusion in the shadow and bone plot being forced and unnecessary. which is unfortunate, because the crows deserve to get to the good stuff in their story, but at the moment they’re in a holding position because they just don’t have enough time sharing the screen with s&b to do their story justice. which is WHY GETTING THE SPIN-OFF IS SO IMPORTANT. if you want the storylines we love the crows for, if you want the REAL crooked kingdom scenes with their buildup and emotional impact, we gotta help the crows get their own show. even if that means watching them be filler in the s&b show. which is still completely possible to find enjoyment in, at least from my perspective— you just gotta view it less critically and more like foreshadowing for what’s to come, getting to see these characters build relationships early so that they might in fact be stronger when we get to their story in the show.
and when you view it like that it can be exciting! what’s worse than pekka that the crows will have to deal with? what confrontation will inej wiitness kaz have that affects her view of him like witnessing the alby confrontation in the books did, since she missed it in the show? how will seeing the alby confrontation affect jesper and nina’s perception of kaz (we can still get “who the hell is jordie” guys, jesper doesn’t know kaz’s brother’s name). the s&b show expanding on the crows content, even if the storylines are messy and rushed and unnecessary, is also building their relationships and characters. so when we do get the proper soc storyline, we’re ready for them in a different way than when we started the books.

SHADOW AND BONE SEASON 2 EPISODE ONE THOUGHTS. (NO SPOILERS!!)
I was at the premier last night, an amazing experience, and might I say I didn’t get to interact with too many of the cast but Amita and Ben are literally the sweetest.
The episode was really good. I don’t know if it’s because it was on the big screen and I was with a bunch of other huge fans I really enjoyed it.
It is different from the book, but the entire cast does a very good job with the characters. I was not disappointed with what they changed or made different I think it’s fine and remember the books are always there!!
Patrick is 100% an amazing Nikolai. When he showed up on screen as Sturmhond. Wow he did an incredible job.
When Wylan came on screen I think I almost cried. We didn’t see too much of Wylan in the first episode but I’m excited I think Jack is wonderful.
ANNA AS TAMAR WOW. Also not very much screen time in the first episode but from her few lines here she totally shines.
A lot of the trailer/teasers we’ve seen are from the first episode so I’m really excited to see the next few. I think people are going to enjoy it.
STREAM STREAM STREAM SO WE CAN GET A SEASON 3!!!

New crows clip y'all! I REPEAT WE'VE GOT A NEW CROWS CLIP!!!!
Asdkgbsvbxke that little smile when Wylan saw Jesper and when Wylan tried to tell Jesper that they've met but stopped mid sentence he was most likely going to refer to the first time they met in book canon
The conversation about loosing fingers whilst doing demo is pure gold. It is also a very Jesper thing to play around with the chemicals without any concern and a very Wylan thing to stop Jesper from doing that which also prooves that he is actually careful
Jesper talking that way about Wylans demo skills to Kaz in front of Wylan is so book accurate. Also I love that even though he might not do it consciously he is actually interested in Wylan which is why he asks about university but damn he is wrong about Wylan being the kind of person for a desk job
Inej came with Nina just like how Kaz sent her to recruit Nina in the books, I love this detail and I hope we get that first Ninej (not meant as a ship) converstation
I guess from his reaction that Kaz already knew who Nina was but like the look Inej and Jespers faces. So I guess they're like "That's Arkins contact but I thought she was captured by Fjerdan" and what will their reactions be if they find out that she wants to free one of those Drüskelle from Hellgate?
Nina's reaction to Jesper and Inej was also so on point like she is confused but curious and kinda flirty, how will she react when she finds out they know the conductor
Wylan offering everyone a cup of tea isn't just a Wylan thing to do but also THE most British thing to do
So I guess now we know how my tumblr blog will look like after the whole season drops. I fear this is basically just a teaser...

six of crows + “you can never go home“
originally i was going to write this in the tags of this post, but i hit tag limit before i even got halfway through. so i’m making it its own post.
the idea of “you can never go home” is core to each of the six crows which is why it’s such a jewish story. if you don’t want to read through my long rants, here’s the short version:
kanej can never go home because the children who belonged in their homes are dead.
jesper can never go home because to him, home represents shame. wylan does go home, but his homecoming is born from being set adrift much the same way as the other crows are.
helnik can never go home because their loyalty to their homes has wavered, and they can never come back from that.
ok rant time. first: kaz. kaz can never go back to his original home outside of lij because the boy who belongs there is kaz rietveld, and kaz rietveld is dead. maybe you could call ketterdam his new home - he probably would - but that’s even more tragic in a way, isn’t it? he’s so tied down to ketterdam. he’s unable to return to one home and unable to leave the other. (shameless self promotion time: my wip the sower explores this; it probably won’t be published on ao3 for a long while but if you’re interested to know what that’s about and get progress updates + teasers you can check out my fanfiction sideblog @tealquills, everything related to that wip should be under the tag “the sower”.)
now inej. my favorite diaspora girl. inej can never go home because of who she’s become - “a suli girl who had become a killer”. she can’t unbecome the dangerous girl, the girl with claws who names knives after saints. she can’t unbecome the wraith. and the wraith doesn’t belong in the suli caravans. the girl who did “died in the hold of a slaver ship”. she loves her family deeply and wants to be with them and still be loved by them, but she cannot go back home with them. the wraith can’t settle, especially because she always seeks justice. she’s no longer complacent, and she could not bear complacency. she feels purpose and drive to save others from what she endured at the menagerie. between these two things, is it any wonder she takes to the sea?
jesper can’t go home because his home is too entwined with feelings of boredom and shame. after aditi’s death, the monotony of farm life became unbearable. the shame and guilt associated with his durast abilities became unbearable. most of all, the grief became unbearable. it was no longer viable for him to live in novyi zem, at home with his father who loved him so much and failed him so profoundly. and so he went to kerch, and there was no going back.
for wylan, too, home is a place entwined with shame. jan van eck made him feel ashamed for his disability, building up intense feelings of worthlessness and guilt. wylan’s story is interesting in that he does go home, quite literally. he ends up living in van eck’s manor with jesper. in this way, he’s not really living a “you can never go home” story arc the same way as the other crows. but that idea is still core to his character, because for awhile, it was true. after the attempted murder on the boat, wylan had no home. he was set adrift in the same way kaz was after using jordie’s corpse as a raft, in the same way inej was after her time in the menagerie, in the same way jesper was after aditi’s death. wylan can only find his way home again after he experienced what it was to be without a home, and he will always carry that with him.
nina can’t go home because she’s realized she wants a life beyond that of a soldier, and ravka will never give her that. through matthias, she learns to aspire to peace and betterment rather than being a cog in the machine. she loves her country, but she can never quite be loyal to it in the same way again. the world but specifically ravka and fjerda will never let her and matthias be more than grisha and drüskelle, and she can’t accept that. even in king of scars and rule of wolves when she’s working for the ravkan government again, she can’t stay long. she goes to fjerda, and while she’s there, she takes up matthias’s mission. she starts building bridges. she tries to end the war. she falls in love again.
and finally, matthias. oh, my tragic boy. matthias can never go home because... well. you know. after coming to love nina, he can never be truly loyal to fjerda again, but it’s still his country. he spends all of six of crows and crooked kingdom trying to find a way to reconcile the truly awful parts of the country he calls home with everything that he believes makes it worth saving. he wants to go home so badly in a way that even inej can’t quite match. but in the end, he can’t go home because his wants are not enough. because one man’s personal journey cannot save an entire nation. because his love redeems him, but it can’t redeem fjerda.

Fandom Focus #42
Young Royals - After I binged this show it kinda took over my brain. I'm in deep, and I am loving it. Can't believe it took me so long to dive into it but I'm having a great time in this fandom so far!
Tumblr media
Interview with the Vampire 2022 - It's a comin'! It's almost time for season 2, we've been fed with teasers and trailers galore and I am so freaking excited for this you have NO IDEA!!! About to be obsessed with this show again for a long time!
Tumblr media
Six of Crows/Shadow and Bone - GUESS WHO MET KAZ AND INEJ?!!!! AND HAD A PHOTO WITH THEM?! AND GOT THEM TO SIGN MY COLLECTORS EDITION OF SIX OF CROWS?! It was so fucking amazing, and I got to ask Freddy a question at the panel - he confirmed Kaz is Wylan's father figure and he tried to embody that which I love! Yeah so been reading fics. Knee deep in love with this universe again.
Tumblr media
Mary & George - I need to rewatch it. It's circling in my brain honestly. What a good show. Everyone go watch it now (for my USA friends it's coming out on Starz on the 5th, and might well hit pirating sites as well soon if it hasn't already).
Tumblr media
Red, White & Royal Blue is still circling my head, don't worry. It will not leave me alone! Jurassic Park is also in my brain (and I may be doing a uni assessment to do with it too), and Heartstopper has a small corner too!

warning really soppy rant about my thoughts about the cancelation and my relationship with the grishaverse
It's truly heart-breaking. I had a good cry about the cancelation , and as i was, i wondered why am i crying over this? Why are i crying over fictional characters?
I think it's because of the impact that the grishaverse has had on me. It found me in a really dark time, where i was going through a lot, and with leigh's gorgeous storytelling and thoughtful character design, it got me through those tough years. I fell in love with the story of six of crows and the characters, and how their story played out and the kind of relationships they had with each other and the poetic complexity of it all. it was my excapism.
Then shadow and bone came along, and i was ecstatic, the fact the 5 of my favourite fictional characters of all time were coming to life made me so so so happy. Season 1 happened, and the fandom grew, and i found a community of people who were just as crazy about Kaz and Inej's symbolism and would analyse little quotes as much as me. After that the countdown and trailers and teasers for season 2 came along, I begun said countdown, its how my blog became i guess my blog? And then the magic of season 2 happened, through it's craziness and shitty reviews and budget. The fact that the Wylan Van Eck had been brought to life, was enough to make me cry, when i saw Jack Wolfe appear on my TV playing a show accurate flute and rendition of the crows motif, i wept. Then wesper being brought to life! having a happy queer love story just made my heart so so so happy. And i am so glad they did it the way they did.
Now the sad stuff. The fact that i will never get to see zoyalai on screen just makes my heart ache. And the fact that i will never get to see these silly characters silly little stories be brought to life just breaks me, truly. Inej's story lost to the wind, along with so many others.
I wonder what will be made of the fandom. I wonder what will happen to us.

3, 6, 8, 18, 19! <3
Hello friend ❤️
3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve ever written?
This is such a tough one. You’d think it would be easier, because I’m so hard on myself about my writing, but there are so many that I have a soft spot for.
Honorable mention has to go out to the To Be Human series and the Foundations series. Which I adore 🥹
BUT— the top spot has always been Gaining Heart. Closely followed now, by my most recent story. Keep You Safe’s later chapters still give me a lot of second thoughts, but I’m still so, so proud of it. It feels good to write again, and to feel certain that I’m going to finish something.
6. Are there any fics from others that you reread all the time?
GIRL(gnc) YES. Like, so so many. I really need to make an ultimate rec list across all my fandoms. In the meantime, these are some of my most recently read (and reread) faves
Six of Crows/wesper
you’re still a mystery by its_tortle
Take me away to some place real by Rivkah94
feverdreams by Jo_Rolle and Jurda Parem by D20_ofcrows— both inspirations for Keep Your Safe ❤️
Dinluke:
Mandalore at Night (Greetings From!) by BucketofWater
Oh the things we left behind by furiosophie
And of course, the ultimates:
Sparked Up Like a Book of Matches by Sena
4 Minute Window by speranza
You know I dreamed about you (before I saw you) by BeeLove
these fragments I have shored against my ruins by aprettyaway
8. What projects are you currently working on?
I’m figuring out how I want the epilogue/last chapter of Keep You Safe to go! There’s two alternatives that I’ve started.
I’m also outlining a few companion pieces for this most recent fic— one where Jan Van Eck tries to stop his son from testifying in his trial, and another where we finally find an antidote to the parem for our darling Jesper.
I also have a stack of WIPs a mile high, and I have not forgotten about them ❤️ but the hyperfixation wants what it wants.
18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve ever written in a fic?
I don’t know about ever, but I loved this little tiny description in chapter 4, between Jesper and his da:
He squeezed the back of his neck like a kitten, and it had an embarrassingly similar effect, leaving Jesper melting into his side.
19. Give us a small teaser from one of your WIPs
Small?? Have you met me??? (I don’t know where this is gonna go yet, but it’s one of the possible epilogue scenes. And also might end up it’s own thing. And might nottttt even end up being a thing, we’ll see!)
“—course you do,” Wylan was saying, “you all do.”
“Really? We all have songs?” Inej was sat beside him at the piano, watching the effortless melody lift through the air from under his fingers.
Nina twirled around when Matthias spun her, her skirts flaring out like flower petals. Her bare feet stumbled tipsily, sleepy and content. Her grin was wide. “What’s mine, then?”
“Romanenkova’s Polka.”
“Ravkan!” Tolya nodded, toasting Wylan from the arm of the sofa, “Excellent choice.”
“What’s all this about, then?” Jesper announced his presence, sweeping into the room with a smile. The soft skin behind his boyfriend's ear was begging to be kissed, and he stooped to greet him with a press of lips.
Flushed and warm, Wylan tipped his head back. Jesper could feel his smile rather than see it. He felt the purr in his throat as he dipped down to his pulse point, before burrowing his nose into the thick auburn curls for a minute.
Saints, he was lucky.
“Well, what’s going on besides our darling Inej sitting in my seat?”
She rolled her eyes, but smiled as she stood for him. “Your darling Wylan was just telling us that we all have songs in his head.”
Wylan shrugged as if it didn’t really matter. “There’s pieces that sound like you to me— when I see you, I think of them.”
“What’s Jesper’s then?”
Jesper could admit to a certain degree of self-centeredness— Tamar had practically taken the words right out of his mouth.
Wylan ducked his head, looking down at the black and white keys. There was a dimple in his cheek, and he turned an absolutely edible shade of pink all the way to his ears. He was so beautiful, sometimes Jesper could swear he heard music, too.
He bumped his shoulder with his own, sitting hip to hip on the piano bench.
“What’s mine?”
Thanks for playing! These questions are so detailed and fun ❤️
