Monster High: 13 Wishes (2013) + Letterboxd Reviews

Wydowna Spider was a deeply underutilized and awesomely spooky character design in Monster High G1, reflecting a black widow spider with jet-black skin, solid red hair, six arms, and four insect eyes above her normal ones. Wydowna had next to zero role in the animated media and no speaking appearances, but with her two dolls she is defined by comic-book fandom to a degree that rivals Ghoulia's (for Wydowna, it's her entire thing).

There is simply insufficient portrayal of the character to make any conclusions about her racial coding, but there is a fair concern that viewing her as a Black character could be offensive given that she is literally stark black...and her signature SDCC doll is uncomfortably close to racist imagery already. She just could have used another lipstick color (silver was right there). Oh, G1...

Stark-black G1 Catty Noir had similar vagueness and optical issues to Wydowna, but, perhaps surprisingly, became Black-coded in G3 with a Black voice actor and a more careful design featuring subtler lip paint, baby hairs, and microbraids. Could Wydowna have the same approach if Mattel were daring enough to bring back such an out-there doll? What's the feeling on the character that was?

Edit: 13 Wishes should happen during the same time as the earlier chapters of Ghoulfriends Just Wanna Have Fun. I initially said EFSS would be after Wishes but parts of the movie make that confusing, so EFSS could be as the timeline says or after Wishes depending on your interpretation. Reminder the movies do not release chronologically

I will assume that semesters go as follows:

Sept - Dec ( S1 ), Jan - Mid Mar ( S2 ), Late Mar - June ( S3 )

I made the best possible timeline for Monster High G1 that I could

Any characters not included is likely because of how new they were in G1 and likely wouldn't have aged much.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Monster High is known for anything BUT it's continuity. There could be lore explanations for why some characters are in Monster High despite being too old, and sometimes ages are likely forgotten by creators which happens a lot.

My math is also not the best so please feel free to correct me.

There are also issues with monsters who apparently age differently ( Rochelle, Robecca, Jinafire.. ) or age in " Monster years " ( which was never explained ). To that I say: make up how it works. Maybe Robecca gets rebuilt / remodeled to fit her new age, maybe gargoyles and dragons age in a gradient rather than a linear pattern, maybe some monsters need to form a connection and then they age, etc..

Or maybe all of Monster High gets the Ash Ketchum treatment and never age with very little exceptions

So I was thinking about Monster High 2022 cartoon showrunner Shea Fortana responded on Instagram while making the show in which G1 characters will be integrated and there is a handful of characters MH franchise team doesn't want to introduce to a new generation.

So I made a list...

Also, I'd like to point out that I could be 100% wrong. I don't work for Mattel and it's just pure speculation from me.

The first two tiers explain itself: Characters that appear in the show. Main characters that already have dolls and those who don't have dolls yet.

The "Cameo" tier: Probably Operetta will appear next year with Jinafire, Skelita, etc.

The "Unknown status" tier is debatable. In the case of MH live-action movie uses the character Jackson / Holt to make Mr. Komos. Who knows if they are going to use these characters later on.

The "Ties with other franchise" Tier: I don't know if C.A Cupid will never return because Ever After High.

The "Controversial ones" Tier: Isi, Gigi Grant, Whisp, Hoodude, & Jane ties in with sensitivity issues of their own culture.

I didn't know that Kjersti is based on a real person who caused controversy with Mattel because Becky's wheelchair doll couldn't fit in Barbie's Dreamhouse.

And the last tier: Are characters have bland designs that would be difficult to sell. Except for Wydowna but probably won't sell well because cost of molding and designing clothing specific for her. Most likely higher up thinks she's too scary for kids.

I know there more characters that have potential like Johnny Spirit, Seth Ptolemy, Spelldon Cauldronello

Like I said in my previous post. The problem with G1 is that a new MH doll line must include 3 or 4 new characters. And some of them don't even go to Monster High. Chances are getting less screen time or don't get development.

This is understandable for the business side of things that most popular characters will be introduced first and see which ones need redesign like Lagoona, Ghoulia, etc.

At the end of the day. Monster High cartoon is like any other show to promote toys.

If the Monster High 2022 show ended. The MH fanbase will live and stay here: creating fanarts, fanfictions, or even custom dolls of your favorite character.

I'm genuinely curious as to how you think Wydowna should be written, considering either the lackluster amount of attention she gets or being a background character for the most part

Even outside of the Ghoulfriends books, just in general, what do you think the writers should've focused on more with her?

Tbh, I would completely disregard the Ghoulfriends books altogether. She was so poorly portrayed, and the way the narrative treated her was criminal lol.

The only media she featured heavily in was the Power Ghouls comics, but I think her wiki page describes her pretty well. "Nerdy, sassy, and mischievous" is plenty to build off of, and pretty much matches up with how I see her. She loves fashion and comic books in particular, but is also known to multitask to the point where she's regarded as "the most productive student at Monster High." I think it could be fun to expand upon that, that not only is she good at multitasking, but she also likes to try all sorts of hobbies out. I bet she's an unbelievably fast typist as well lol.

I also imagine her love of fashion and designing clothes partially arose from necessity. She's a rare monster type, and I imagine she has a hard time finding clothes to accommodate all of her arms, so she most likely had to learn how to alter/ make them herself. If we take the Power Ghouls into consideration, it's fair to assume she has a strong sense of justice. I think her appearance must be a shocking to some monsters given the rarity of her species, and I'm sure she's had to deal with some shitty comments from time to time. She's very clever when it comes to comebacks though, and doesn't let their words get to her. She knows she's an stunning and talented ghoul.

Apparently Garret Sander himself stated that he wanted to make a Power Ghouls movie with her as the main, and I think that would have been excellent. Granted I personally always saw the Power Ghouls as an AU of sorts, but even still, it would have been a perfect opportunity for us to see her character shine.

I love that she's beasties with Clawdeen and Ghoulia. The idea of the three of them hanging out together is so cute to me. I can also see her getting along with the Ghoulfriends, Venus in particular, Twyla, Jinafire and Skelita.

She has such a striking design, I will never understand why she was never featured more in the media.
