omg so many but wwdits s4e10 destroyed me and also had me on the edge of my seat, it was such a good season finale and i can't wait for s5

Season 4 Episode 10, “Sunrise, Sunset”

I feel like they really dropped the ball on this season of wwdits, especially the last episode. So much missed potential, so many plot points that were brought up and then completely undone towards the end of the season because the writers seemingly didn't know what to do with it. This last episode didn't feel like a finale at all. They brought up new plot threads (too many for a 30 minute episode, imo) that didn't really go anywhere, and after the "Freddy"-episode I was really expecting the season to hit more of a climax than it did. Guillermo's decision during like the last minute of the episode got me a bit more excited, but that's not going to give any payoff until the next season. This used to be one of my favorite shows but I honestly can't believe the drop in quality between season 3 and season 4 (and the Marwa-plotline. Yikes. I was really hoping they would at least try to salvage her arc in the last episode, but this makes me think that the writers truly didn't know how messed up all of that was)

Aaaand they inevitably fall back into the cycle again, everything is as it was and nothing that changes stays, we're back at step 1. But Guillermo is aware. Goddamn do I love Guillermo.

like. imagine finding out that your annoying housemate is going to die in a few months. and so you do your best to make the last bit of his life good, you hang out with him and include him in things and you end up… sort of liking him?? and you see this side of him that nobody else does because they’re turned away by the fact that being around him is exhausting even when he doesn’t mean it to be. he doesn’t live to drain, he drains to live.

and then he dies horrifically and is reborn and you’re mourning the loss of a dear friend while raising a newborn you’re ill-prepared to care for and the child looks exactly like the friend you’ve just lost and don’t have time to grieve.

you cut off almost everyone you know and focus on raising this kid right, or at least the best you can manage, for a full year. there’s one friend you can spend time with and reach out to for help, but you can’t even tell him what truly happened to your friend or process any grief with him. so you just. hold that inside you for a year.

people come back into your life and the burden isn’t yours alone to bear anymore, but time is constantly slipping through your fingers. your child has aged about five years over the past one, but this process unexpectedly speeds up.

one week he’s a toddler running around the house and being chased by his other surrogate parent, and the next he’s a kid who loves a bunch of things you think are boring and annoying but you do your best to support them anyways, and the next he’s an angry, miserable teenager who can’t understand what’s happening to his body and mind or why he can’t perform his tap routines anymore, and he takes it out on you because what else is he going to do?

and you’re doing your best to support him through this but you have no clue what the fuck is happening to him either. and you miss taking him to the zoo and playing piano while he sings and dances. you see how he struggles with the changes and you struggle with them too but you just push it down and muscle through it. you keep setting up playdates and trying to engage with him but everything is turmoil and it’s agony for both of you.

and then all of a fucking sudden your child transforms back into your late friend. and sure, you’re happy he’s back! but he has no memory of the past year-and-some-change you’ve spent together as parent and child, and the kid you’ve been raising is completely gone. nobody besides you has any knowledge of how hard you tried to raise him right, of all the time you spent together, of all the ways that little shit grew on you even when he was destroying the house and talking your ear off about musical theater.

he gets rid of his old toys and his racecar bed and it feels like losing someone even though it technically isn’t. you understand why parents keep their deceased kids’ rooms intact for years after the fact - getting rid of their things feels like an admission that they’re gone, like destroying the last bit of them left. and you’re not ready to let go, but it happens anyways. you loved your child, and he’s been erased from existence. and now you’re mourning a son and nobody around you understands it. sunrise, sunset. wasn’t it yesterday when he was small?
