(based off @xoxunhinged's post)
what about ww2 RAF pilot gaz wooing you with his clothing and sugar rations, just handing his ration book over to you with a wink? or "acquiring" the silk from the ruined parachutes so you can make yourself a wedding dress?
what about him trading cigarettes for chocolate and nylon stockings with the american airmen?
what about gaz walking you home like a gentleman after the village hall closes after the dance due to the blackouts?
what about gaz tucking the teeny tiny photograph you sent him into his breast pocket? what about gaz hiding perfume spritzed letters from his bunk mates under his pillow?
what about gaz who dreams of the day this bloody war ends so he can whisk you down the aisle?

German soldiers make time to get something to eat - date and location unknown. Whilst the exact date and location is unknown, it is thought that the picture was taken during the early stages of the war

Some examples of ration cards used during WWII. Many things were rationed during war time, which isn't anything unusual.

Dean Cornwell, WW2 propaganda poster, 1943
The phrase "Are you playing square?" refers to Americans who purchased black market gasoline when it was being rationed among the civilian populace. A soldier looks to the audience to appeal to their sense of patriotism.

one of the most fun parts of academia is how papers always fall into “hell hell I'm in hell I will never think about this ever again once I click submit” or “I am going to shoehorn this information into every conversation I have until the day that I die”

jezebel started smoking when she was quite young in canon bc the luxuries allotted to convent girls were essentially the same things given to like, soldiers back in the day.

i never understood the north american and generally western obsession with zombies and apocalypses and post apocalypse wasteland stories. they're often pessimistic, but even when they're not — the forced scarcity and societal collapse is only a fun fantasy if your country hasn't been through it in the last ~30 years. oooh, how will we deal without water, ooooh, what will we cook without power, oooooh what do we do without groceries in supermarkets, will we have to grow our own food or (gasp) forage for edible items?... my parents were forced to do that in the 90s. it's only an edgy suicidal wish fulfilment fantasy for YOU

Have you ever heard of the National Loaf? No, it’s not a detective novel or a spy thriller. It’s actually a type of bread that was made in Britain during the Second World War. And it was not very tasty. I stumbled upon this curious fact while reading some of the descriptions left by my Grandma. She often wrote about bread becoming chewy and grey, and I wondered if she was just being picky or if…
