i never understood the north american and generally western obsession with zombies and apocalypses and post apocalypse wasteland stories. they're often pessimistic, but even when they're not — the forced scarcity and societal collapse is only a fun fantasy if your country hasn't been through it in the last ~30 years. oooh, how will we deal without water, ooooh, what will we cook without power, oooooh what do we do without groceries in supermarkets, will we have to grow our own food or (gasp) forage for edible items?... my parents were forced to do that in the 90s. it's only an edgy suicidal wish fulfilment fantasy for YOU
#you must be really secure in your basic life amenities (food water power shelter peace) to fantasise about losing them forever like that.#N.Am is worse on average because ww2 didn't bomb their homes and kill their pre-army children#so for many there isnt a recent cultural memory of grandma and grandpa forced to subsist under air raids Right Here Where They Live#but i generalised western europe for a reason: it's stronger when the cultural memory is your MA foraging for food out of scarcity#when you know your cousins wouldnt be alive without some creative collaboration on (post)soviet rations among family friends#idk it makes me full body cringe. good for them obviously for not having TRAUMA but im bored of their perspectives on post apoc stories#personal#war in ukraine#although i was mainly thinking of post soviet severe poverty survival - the war has just reawakened skills from the 90s for many#the last time people were forced to do this was not that long ago for many places. or is RIGHT NOW. and for hollywood it's a fantasy
