Dreary weekend in NC-WV, but once I got over my hangover from the WVU-Texas Tech game this morning, I managed to sneak in a quick fall hike on the Virgin Hemlock Trail in Coopers Rock State Forest. The asters are out in force and quite beautiful this fall. Among them are (from top): purplestem aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum); frost aster (Symphyotrichum pilosum), also known as awl aster; calico aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum); and blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium).

"Gordon Gee plans to retire in 2025. I have no doubt his grandchildren will benefit from a private education similar to his own, consisting of a thorough liberal arts education with access to subjects now increasingly reserved for the elite, such as math and foreign languages. They will have their choice of careers in the arts, humanities, government, finance, security, diplomacy, business, or tech. Those who decide what is worth learning, what is worth teaching, what counts as a 'structural deficit,' will never bear the brunt of their own choices.
West Virginians, trapped in the clutches of economic hardship, find themselves mercilessly shackled to a state most can ill afford to abandon, left to suffer the full weight of the WVU administration’s harrowing decisions. We will learn only subjects aligned with the preferences of the rich, driven by their financial motivations. We will work for the oligarchs for the rest of our lives, just like our parents and our grandparents did for the global coal industry. We will continue to amass inconceivable riches for the nation’s privileged elite until our last breath, and we will find our resting place in unadorned cardboard coffins beneath West Virginia soil.
And those condemned to languish within the husk of WVU, who would excel within a capacious and intellectually coherent university, will only find it harder and harder to access avenues of social and economic mobility."

Abby Nickerson: ‘Put in the Work and Your Dreams Will Follow!’
Tumblr media
Read the headline. OK, one more time. Sure, it’s a mantra. Something of the shortest motivational speech of all time, actually. But, yes, this young lady, a native of Brooke County and a graduate student at West Virginia University, earnestly believes if any individual walks the walk, they inevitably and justifiably earn the right to talk the talk. She wholeheartedly believes this premise because Abby Nickerson is literally walking and talking proof that an honest-to-goodness, hard-core work ethic pays definitive dividends. She earned her undergraduate degree early – yes, while living in Morgantown – at the same time she’s managed her side life as a Mountaineer cheerleader, and today she’ll be right back on the field at Milan Puskar Stadium rooting for WVU to defeat Big 12 opponent Texas Tech. That was her wish-upon-a-star, a particular goal Nickerson adopted as a student-athlete at Weirton-Madonna High School before she was graduated in 2019. That does not mean, though, she’s left her hometown in the Mountain State’s Northern Panhandle in the dust. Truth be told, nothing could be further from the truth. Abby wants to work in the medical field, you see, to care for others when her high-flying days in the blue-and-gold limelight are complete, and she’s proud to serve as a role model for those wishing to follow her footsteps all the way to Mountaineer Field. That’s because Abby Nickerson is proof dreams can come true. Nickerson has realized there is much more to serving as a WVU cheerleader than the on-field duties, and that includes promotions and community appearances. In what restaurant in Morgantown do you believe you’ve eaten the most? Los Mariachis because who doesn’t love some good Mexican food? I am also a huge fan of Mountain Mamas for some great bar food. You have loved cheering since your days as a high school student at Weirton Madonna. Why? I have always loved everything about cheering, from games to practices and learning new skills. I still get the same thrill every time I step out on the field for pregame just as I did my very first time. I love the energy on the field, the opportunities to meet WVU fans, and travel across the country representing WVU. Cheerleading is more than just cheering for the Mountaineers on game days. As a WVU cheerleader, I have the opportunity to be a role model for future Mountaineers who look up to me. I've always enjoyed the appearances where we get to engage with students and the community. Nickerson was a member of the 2019 OVAC cheerleading champions for Weirton Madonna. What advice would you offer a high school cheerleader if they wanted to follow in your footsteps? Put in the work and your dreams will follow! I have always been the type of person who has dreams and aspirations. I put my mind to something, hold myself accountable, and do not stop until I achieve it. Work, work, and work. Our team is Coed and I had never Coed stunted when I made the decision to try out. I looked for places that offered privates and camps and that is where I got started. Do not be afraid to reach out to current Cheerleaders to ask for advice. We are more than happy to help you achieve your goal! Was winning the “Backyard Brawl” everything you hoped for? Winning the “Backyard Brawl” in Milan Puskar Stadium was the experience of a lifetime! It was the best college football atmosphere that I have been part of. I have had the opportunity to travel to many Big 12 and non-conference schools and no one did it quite like the 60,000 fans in Morgantown last Saturday. Mountaineer Nation played a huge role in keeping the atmosphere high energy the whole game. Besides winning, some of my favorite parts of the game were leading the crowd in “Let’s Go Mountaineers,” singing “Sweet Caroline,” and, of course, “Country Roads.” Abby will be back on the Mountaineer Field sidelines this afternoon in Morgantown. Once your education is complete in Morgantown, what’s next for you? After completing my MBA, I plan to apply to (Physician Assistant) School at WVU and eventually practice in the rural areas of our beautiful state. I am passionate about exercise as medicine and throughout my journey in EXPH, I have grown in this field and feel confident that I can make a difference in the healthcare field by enforcing exercise as medicine throughout my career. WVU has shaped me into the person I am today, and I will forever be grateful for that fact. Read the full article

Disney Sued By Film Finance Partner For Using ‘Hollywood Accounting’ – Deadline
Hey, everybody should read the absolute vitriol dripping from these comments, towards mainly, again, DISNEY. Check this one out:
Anonymous
on August 15, 2023 3:21 pm
Why so reticent to criticize Disney?? They’ve been the biggest film studio in box office gross for a decade now, they do have a lot more to answer for than others.
It seems like every time somebody decides to criticize a legacy studio vs Amazon or Netflix, everyone just does their “what about streamers” routine. Streamers have their problems, but legacy studios have been screwing creatives for a century now.
It’s interesting that the propaganda machine that protects studios like Disney, Universal, Paramount and to a lesser extent WB is still working well with some people even in the middle of a strike.
Nobody has contributed more to franchise fatigue, media consolidation and the destruction of mid budget adult dramas aka cinema, like Disney. Nobody has ruined cinema going more with their frontloaded event-making of movies that celebrates OW as the be all end all discussion of “success” for movies these days like Disney. And nobody has more a too big to fail mentally like Disney.
It’s the reason people stopped going to the theaters. You have less consumer choice, at ever increasing costs, and more infantile, lowest common denominator entertainment that is only praised as successful because they screen them every 15 minutes and spend 100 million on marketing when that could’ve been spent making 2-3 decent adult-geared movies.
Barbie cost more to market than the entire production negative. It had over 30 screenings on a “preview day” thursday, every 10 minutes.
Some defend this system as demand driving more screenings but there is clearly an aspect of “you give me the screens, I’ll give you the marketing spend”.
Too-big-too-fail releases distort the marketplace and clearly aren’t even guaranteeing success as we’ve seen this summer.
These fuckers are seriously trying to destroy Disney because of it's strong Children's programs and box office competition. I guarantee that's why. This is a part of the attacks against public education and our economy. Look up TSG Entertainment and their list of investments. A large majority of the films they backed are foreign, mainly coming from the UK. They've also worked with Disney competitors a lot.
"...Today, like many land-grant universities, WVU sits at the convergence of several cultural and economic tectonic shifts that are working in tandem to radically transform education. Foremost among these shifts is the changing economic climate of higher ed. WVU, like many higher-education institutions, has been plagued by gross financial mismanagement by administrators and consultants who have funneled money into massive administrative bloat and capital projects at the expense of faculty hires and support for faculty and graduate students. The university is currently facing a $45 million budget gap, and is seemingly uninterested in shrinking administrator salaries, creating artificial conditions for austerity.
This shift to massive administrative salary costs and, relatedly, software and tech expenditures, came about as federal funding of higher education massively slowed, particularly after George W. Bush’s cuts in 2007–08. Fifty years of cuts to higher education have accounted for losses of between 30 to 50 percent of funding for some land-grant schools. Facing state austerity and a culture war on public goods, especially public education, state funding for higher education continues to decline, forcing public universities to rely more on private donors, who impart new controls on higher education professionals.
Meanwhile, higher education has become a major political target for the right. One only needs to look at the takeover of the New College of Florida (to name but one example of the GOP’s “war on woke”) to see how academic expertise has come under fire as a political wedge issue in this campaign season—while the GOP’s privatization program, perfected under Reagan, funnels public money into both tax cuts for the wealthy and various grifts. The book bans, censorship, purges of area studies programs, and targeting of academics at public institutions (particularly in the South) are all calculated to decrease the public’s confidence in public education so that it can be dismantled and replaced with private corporations, which lack regulation and oversight..."

But it solely depends on the town bc you got smaller areas then you got..Downtown-
oh yeah i don’t play when it comes to that shit. growing up queer and trans in Appalachian WV i know i have an obligation to protect myself as well as others from that garbage. absolutely no tolerance
living in WV is scary and gets scarier every year now. there IS community here… but it feels like it’s only really in the bigger college towns like Morgantown, Huntington, Beckley’s WVU Tech campus even. everywhere else is literally like….. no thank you. i don’t like to be on the outskirts of where i live without someone with me
Parkersburg? i’d be alright i think. Rainelle? never. Oceana? FUCK THAT

Higher education fled this American small town. It left a ghost town.
All this time later, West Virginia’s decision to move WVU Tech is important not just for what it took away but also for the distrust it fueled with its departure. The residents of Montgomery feel abandoned by the state’s powerful flagship university, which also has become the state’s largest healthcare provider and employer. Wait. In West Virginia, a state-run university is the largest…

James Long returns to Best Virginia for 2023 TBT team in Wheeling
Tumblr media
James Long will return as head coach of Best Virginia for The Basketball Tournament’s summer 2023 season in its new host city of Wheeling, West Virginia. The competition is scheduled for late July, with a date TBD at the Wesbanco Arena. Fans can sign up to the TBT's waitlist to get first dibs on their best ticket offer when tickets go on sale soon at https://thetournament.com/tbt/ticket-waitlist/. "I am beyond excited to be back as coach," Long said. "Selfishly, it has been the highlight of my summers. More importantly, we get to all spend time together, put the work in, and compete together. We left last year with a lot of excitement for what was next. We had a good run and know that more can be done. I appreciate everyone in Best Virginia trusting me and giving me the opportunity to coach again. This year’s location in Wheeling will be fun to start a different journey. Hopefully we can get some more people over to Wesbanco Arena. There is a lot of momentum from last year, and we are hoping to keep moving forward!" Best Virginia is led by General Manager and player John Flowers and represents men’s basketball alumni from West Virginia University. Further team announcements will follow through the summer ahead of the Wheeling regional. The original home of the Elam Ending, The Basketball Tournament has grown from a unique idea among friends to one of the most exciting and engaging events on the summer sports calendar, with national exposure on ESPN, social media buzz and regional championships across the country - culminating in a winner-take-all $1 million game. Long is a Charleston, West Virginia native who played a season at Wofford before transferring back home to West Virginia. Long walked-on from 2013-15, 2016-17, under legendary coach Bob Huggins. At WVU, Long was a part of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll and was a member of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. After graduating West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science in finance in 2017, Long came back to assist his former coach for two seasons, as Huggins named Long assistant director of basketball operations and video coordinator. Long was able to receive his first head coach gig at WVU Tech (NAIA Division II), when he was hired in July 2019. In his first season coaching, Long led the Golden Bears to a 23-8 record, finishing in first place in the River States Conference. In the 2020-21 season, Long coached WVU Tech to the River States Conference Championship, sending the Golden Bears to two-straight NAIA National Championship appearances in 2021 and 2022. Long coached Best Virginia to a 3-1 record in the 2022 TBT, reaching the Elite-8 in Dayton. It was the first time Best Virginia played out of the Charleston region.  He currently serves as director of basketball operations at The Carolina Factory and COO of Court XIV. The two companies serve some of the best athletes in the Charlotte area. Read the full article
