Hey Tumblr, I need your help!
I make SU in Wolf RPG Editor, which is this super ancient Japanese RPG editing engine from 1998-2007. I am trying to find ANYONE, ANYONE AT ALL, IN 2023 developing for this engine!! If you know ANYONE who makes games in Wolf in The Year Of Our Satan 2023 who scripts their own stuff in Wolf PLEASE PLEASE drop an ask in my askbox or DM me!
I've been trying to debug a message box loop in Wolf's actual engine scripting for A YEAR, and it is my white whale. It is my Excalibur. Someone come help me my family is dying and my crops are failing out of grad school
Wolf uses its own proprietary scripting so I can't ask anyone for code help, cuz it's a scripting logic issue and you need to know Wolf! Aaaaa!!

In this post on the Insider Gaming article and this post on the Reddit screenshot etc leaks (spoiler warning for DA:D at links), I mentioned comments made by possible playtesters/similar folks on Reset Era from October 2022. since I referenced them and many people don't use that site, I thought I'd belatedly collect them here for reference. under a cut in case of DA:D spoilers -
first, the usual set of disclaimers that should be kept in mind with all leaks: might not be real, unable to verify at present, sometimes leakers think they’re right about things but are unintentionally incorrect or got some wires crossed, games change a fair bit between development phases and final release, take with grain of salt etc.
User: "Important to remember that this doesn’t mean the game is anywhere close to release. Still plenty to do and plenty that will be changed between now and release." Possible playtester or person who has otherwise seen or heard about the game (hereafter notating these users as "PP" for brevity): "At the very least I like the gameplay direction they are taking is better than the previous games, and they have a clear direction of where they want this game to go. Although I have always preferred actions rpgs, and am looking forward to the inspiration they took for combat." - PP2: "Folks should be excited but also expect a smaller scale game, plenty of people on the team have 'complained' that it doesn't feel AAA in scope." [...] "I would say just dont go in expecting something other WRPG are producing in terms of game size...if that makes sense lol" - User: "Totally fine, it sounds like it's gonna be a better version of Dragon Age 2, with fleshed out city + surroundings" PP1: "This is not a good description of DAD." - User: "For the love of the Maker, bring back the Darkspawn." PP1: "They did." - User: "I haven't been paying attention. Are they bringing back tactics, or are they leaning more towards the awesome button?" PP2: "They're leaning toward God of War/ Mass Effect over the shoulder combat." - User: "is it open world or splitted in several areas?" PP1: "Only saw certain linear zones, but whether it is all DAO/2 style zones or mixed open and linear zones like DAI is up in the air. I would prefer the latter with less grinding required to progress like everyone else of course." - User: "That's a bit disapointing, but as long as they have a coherent direction, it's still better than the last 2 game's attempt at spliting the baby in twain" PP1: "GOW 2018 style melee, so not mash button for success but timing, combos, mixing up skills, and playing on your build/skill strengths." - User: "ok but I need Knight Enchanter mage or gish equivalent" PP1: "I think with each class you choose at the beginning you can end up with three subclasses." - User: "Was what you played still party-based?" PP1: "Party commands were disabled, so how much control you have is also an unknown." -
User: "Does one [class] include a magical archer, something beyond the Tempest specialization in scope?" PP1: "Well my base class was a warrior type so there was no access to ranger or mage types, but the warrior does have a magic subclass." - User: "Oh wild lol. I thought this kind of stuff is usually under lots of NDA or something similar" PP1: "It is, helps that no one has leaked screenshots or footage." - User: "I figure you can’t say exactly when it happened, but given your mention of party commands being disabled, it guess it happened after the report of last year about the game shifting to a full SP experience, correct? It seems the action-based gameplay that was lightly teased by some devs before remained even when the game shifted to SP, given your impressions." PP1: "Yes, any part I have seen of the game was after that. This part is speculation, if they have open zones like DAI they can still pull off a live service similar to the last three AC games and it would have no effect on people strictly coming to the game for the story. I would even go as far as saying this might be positively received if they only have cosmetic BPs and mtx." - User: "I think dlcs of various forms, from story to outfits/weapon will still happen; even before, when the game was mentioned to be a live service one, they used DAO as something that already fit that definition. The game won’t go beyond that scope in terms of ‘live service’ though, given how much they’re starting DreadWolf is a full SP experience. Interestingly, from the blog update and the lead developer afterwards, ME seems to follow the same path." PP1: "Yeah I think dlc in terms of story expansions are a lock. If they ever want to tread the live service waters again, there is a great template for them to follow." - User: "the neon colored logo has me thinking this might go a very different direction than typical fantasy" PP1: "Not really." - PP1: "The second one [DAII] was quite literally hold a button to attack since the game was easy. The new one is not at all like that." - User: "Or if Dreadwolf even has a party-based system?" PP1: "Yes"

Notes: Posts from October 2022. Some of the stuff said is corroborated by the Reddit leak (e.g. no control of party members at timepoint when game was played, the part of the game that was made available to test being a linear zone). in some places PPs are speculating. and ofc screenshots/a bit of footage has now leaked on Reddit the other day.

Some differences between JRPGs and WRPGs I've noticed.
In JRPGs, attacks hit more often, so both the players and enemies are given more HP than their WRPG equivalents to compensate.
In WRPGs (D&D) Damage is based off a character's weapon, and improved by their strength. In JRPGs (Dragon Quest), Damage is based on the character's strength, and improved by their weapon. The difference is quite surprising.
Continuing from the last point; 18 Strength in D&D gives a bonus 3 damage. In Dragon Quest, 18 strength is 18 damage (or 9 damage if you go back really far) - As a result, in JRPGs damage amounts get much higher than in WRPGs.
The definition of "Cleric" seems to be different between cultures. When I say Cleric, I imagine a tank of a class, with heavy armor, a large shield, and a big hammer. Japan seems to disagree. There are exceptions, DQ3's clerics are very similar to D&D's clerics (Though DQ3 lets them wield blades) but for the most part, in JRPGs, Clerics don't fight. - Anecdote: When I asked someone on an RPG Maker what class they like in Party Building games, and they said cleric, I almost made them a D&D Cleric, then went back to ask him: "Chainmail and Hammer Cleric, or Rod and Robe Cleric?" because of how fundamentally different the term Cleric is between D&D, and things like Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem.
I'll try and add to this as I think of more noteworthy things, or if others want to add things, or correct me on things I got wrong.

Heya, look a Masterpost!
Quills here! This is my main blog where I post both original and fan content. It’s mostly SFW, discounting occasional foul language and revealing outfits, but there will be warnings prior to anything slightly more extreme.
My more explicit art when I get around to actually making any will be on a separate [NSFW |18+| MDNI] blog: Mizz Skelter
Fandoms/Communities I currently engage in:
Interactive Fiction/CoG/Hosted Games
BG3
Persona/Megaten
CRPGs/JRPGs/WRPGs/RPG Maker games in general
!!Disclaimer about DoL!!
If you’re here for my Degrees of Lewdity work, I switched my related content of the game over to Mizz Skelter.
I want to be more careful as DoL by association is deemed nsfw regardless of how clean the content is. I didn't get the memo early on and realize my later ideas won't be suitable on this blog so this'll be the cross I carry now, whoops. The ones already here will remain as they’re harmless enough in my opinion, but from here on out everything revolving DoL goes on Mizz Skelter.

There's a whole essay in it that I might get into someday, but the relatively brief version is that the type of people who get into fandom, especially Gay Elves And Social And Psychological Issues Fandom (like wRPGs), tend to be people who hate religion. As a concept, as a practice, as a thing that exists and has an influence on their culture, in any way that you can hate it. And they really fucking hate Christianity, and most of them also think that every religion is Christianity, so they really fucking hate religion.
So then you have a character like Leliana. Leliana's faith is absolutely core to her identity and worldview from the moment you meet her. But Leliana is, apart from that flaw, very much an ideal fandom woobie (female edition).
And Leliana, conveniently, also has a moment where you have the ability to change her perspective on things; you can convince her that the world is a harsh, brutal place, and she needs to go back to being the harsh, brutal version of herself who she's been trying to leave behind.
Of course, even if you do harden her, she maintains her core of faith. She takes a heretical position on defiling the Ashes, for the greater good, instead of defending them with her life as she will if she's unhardened, but she was already a massive heretic when we met her. Believing in the Maker but not along strict Chantry doctrine was always her thing. So hardened or unhardened, she showed up in the next game, working for the Chantry, doing the work of a god that she never stopped believing in.
And people got pissed. Because they'd convinced themselves that they had broken her of her religious delusion by hardening her. She had this one unforgivable flaw, but you could get rid of it. You could make her not religious, like you! You could get her to share your contempt and disdain for the setting's primary faith. You could fix her, make her not stupid. She gave up the Chantry! Any smart, good character with a smart, reasonable character arc would. It's clearly disrespectful to players to retcon her this way.
Shadowheart has a lot of the same appeal, for a similar reasons, and she also has a major decision point that can massively change her relationship to her faith, and cause her to reject what she believed before. If you make the right choices, she changes the way she thinks she should behave, participates in the destruction of things that she would otherwise have defended.
And similarly, a lot of people seem to have decided that, because they hate religion, because their take on the game is "the moral of the story is fuck them gods, they all fucking suck" and that take really really appeals to them, that this all means Shadowheart obviously feels the same. That she's done with gods forever. That she is super not interested in being a toy for Shar or Selûne or anyone else, ever again.
Of course that's not actually in the text. White-hair Shadowheart says a lot of stuff about being unsure, about not feeling ready, about not knowing whether she can be A Selûnite. She's not Lae'zel, jumping from one god to another without a moment to process what's happened. But that's the point. She is defined, on the non-Shar path, by uncertainty. She doesn't know who she is, she doesn't know what she wants, she just knows she's finally allowed to figure it out. She doesn't say anything definitive, she doesn't say Fuck Them Gods. Maybe she will decide that she just wants to live a quiet life with no god-bothering, she's open to that. But that decision is on the other side of a huge pile of trauma processing and by no means certain to her, or to us. In the meantime, her perspective on her parents' faith is neutral to mildly positive, and even outright interested, by the time of the epilogue. She has zero beef with Selûne.
But a cross-section of fans really want her to, so just like with Leliana, they have decided she must. It's a very "time is a flat circle" thing to watch.
The fandom's perception of Shadowheart's faith on the non-Justiciar path is giving me serious Leliana flashbacks.
#i said 'relatively' brief#you were warned#bg3#also dragon age#people who do adaptations sometimes also have this worldview and that's how you get TV anna volovodov

Character spotlight: Kazuko Ishida
As a sort of apology for the sloppy posts I’ve made, as well as the fact I just wanted to share, here goes a more meaty post.
First of all, I managed to get the skill tree system working just as I wanted. So that’s good news.
Now let’s talk about this fine lady. Kaz is the resident tough girl of the party. When she’s not binge watching her favorite classic movies, she’s practicing marksmanship. She’d like to give a married-to-her-job super professional appearance but her somewhat childish behaviour usually keeps her from fully realizing that persona.
Kazuko may come off as aggressive and untrusting, and she certainly has a “lone hero” complex, but she also has a kind and empathetic side that shows from time to time. She also deeply trusts in and respects her (job) partner Adette.
Gameplay wise Kazuko is a pure power attacker with some of the most damaging skills in the game and very few support and passive skills.
Each character has tree skill trees. Her Onna bugeisha is an extremely offensive minded ice themed tree, in ronin she features smoe support skills and it’s probably the most balanced of the tree, while kunoichi represents her small frame and lite figure with more sneaky skills focused on precision.
There is more to her than that, but I gotta save up some stuff ;)
I hope you liked this.I’ll try to do more of these...

wish there was something like rpg maker, super simple and easy, but geared towards making isometric wrpgs, rather than final fantasy style jrpgs. it would be fun to play around with. something like that is probably possible in rpg maker but hell if I have the scripting knowledge or time and patience to make that work

Well, that was unexpected
I have been figuring out a japanese skill tree plugin to use it on my game. But,sadly I found some unavoidable problems with it that make me have to ditch it in favor of just eventing the system. So that will be my next step.
I was all ready to talk about the different skill trees and how they relate to the characters’ personalities too. Well, maybe next time with a more D.I.Y.approach.

Project Absence devlog and such
I’ve decided to remake and finish a game I had made for the IGMC contest. Project absence is sort of a mish mash of some of my best ideas.
The core theme of this game will be (while it may sound cliched) friendship and how opening up to others can change a person for the better.
I may not be the best artist or game maker but I feel that by sharing it this project may grow.
For now i leave you with a video of the first two minutes of gameplay, most of the stuff shown here is still subject to change.

So RPG Maker is a tool that is primarily used for to make JRPGs but is it possible to make a game that’s more of a WRPG in it? (class systems, picking what attributes or skills to increase on level up, lockpicking, speech checks etc)
Is all of that stuff possible with the vanilla resources or are there any scripts or plugins that allow for that sort of thing?
