so, i don't usually crosspost these posts, but this week's update on patreon is available to everyone and I know I have a bit of a larger following on tumblr, and I'd really like everyone on the same page so I'm dropping all I have to say here too.
good evening friends!! i hope you're all doing well! welcome to the first update of 2024. momentous for me personally, because this is the year we finish larkin. i am making this post available to all patrons, (paid or not) because I'd really like to start 2024 on the right foot with everyone aware of the road ahead. i am so determined to get it done you have no idea. this is my year. 2024, i christen thee: the year of the vampire cowboy.
okay, so big things ahead, lets talk about the update, explore some of the features we have in the game, plans for this weekends release, the schedule and a couple other things.
so, if you've played at all with the new version of the game, you'll take notice that it's a little bit different than my first image of the game. at first larkin was just a straight interactive fiction following the likes of cog like games, with choices and avenues and split stats and the like. but now, as of 2024 (crazy) we're seeing a game that is more reminiscent of a ttrpg, like dnd or cyberpunk, with stats, classes and dice rolls. admittedly, the very first encounter of the game is well (it's a little rigged) the game, of course, could not really get started if the preacher gets cooked before they've even made it to nevada, so, the odds are a little bit stacked in the players favor this round, but at least, it gives you a little bit of a taste of whats to come. to dive into the specifics of what's important with this first encounter (or just, how to avoid getting your ass really kicked) these first few rolls give bonuses to players with high dexterity and athleticism—-but that's not to say you need to make your character beefed up in these departments. each stat will get their time to shine later down the line.
but let's talk about what i'm really excited to discuss: classes. so with the new version of larkin, i've introduced a system of classes that operate somewhat like your standard dungeons and dragons class, but with a little bit more of that classic background from the original ttrpg mixed in—coloring the way your character sees the world of the game, sort of how a race might effect a dnd character--(a dwarf player is going to have a much different worldview than say, an elf.) for this i was heavily inspired by games like dragon age origins and baldur's gate, and while I do have those original background ready to be dropped a little bit later on the game in relation to your character's perspectives on the abrams family, I really like how these have come to form.
in total there are seven new classes: con-man, outlaw, healer, thief, gambler, showman and slayer. each of these classes warps the perspective of the player character, giving them new motivations, dialogue options, and affects their relationships with the other characters in the game and the world around them. to illustrate this, I'm thinking of making a little bit more of an in depth explanation screen to be added to saturday's update to really get that point across, but I'm still toying with how I want to phrase the specifics of it. what i might do is something similar to baldur's gate with little pop-up tutorials that can be turned off/on depending on how you'd like to play.
to give an example of some of the more in depth motivations/choices each class offers lets talk about the thief and the outlaw classes. the thief class i am especially excited for, because like the con-man class and similar to a few others, it really allows your character to be very money/materialistically motivated. it opens up routes later in the game, like romancing one of the sokolovs—with motivations reminiscent of gold-digging (hehehe very excited for that—i think it will be very fun to write—because you have this idea of a cold hearted player who is entering into a relationship with them strictly for business, versus a cold hearted player who is in it for the cash but also. might be falling in love with one of the sokolovs? ((a lot of fun dynamics afoot here.)) the outlaw class is also one i'm excited to work with because it really puts something of a strain on the preacher and wyatt's relationship—-mostly because you see a strong division in terms of their ethics—the preacher in that case is very 'do what you gotta do to survive,' whereas wyatt believes (key word—believes) he's living by some sort of moral code—that he's failed to instill in the person he views as his child. so like there are layers here boys. layers of resentment, failure—to connect, to teach, to bond. a final tidbit about the slayer class before I move on: if you would really like to play into the enemies to lovers trope with one of the vampires, I would highly recommend giving your player this class ((that's all I'll say))
so: saturday, that takes us to the bar, where each class will get a unique scene, similar to how the scheming tactic section worked in the original game. we're gonna finish up the encounter with the first vampires, meet our guild pursuers and move to the bar. I'm planning also to implement the character customization here—(sort of a way to prep before the player heads out to the bar.) most likely won't get to all classes by saturday's code, but after that, I'm planning to release again on next wednesday, so we're keeping on track. I'd really like to give a full picture of customization for the player character, with all the original options for physical appearance (i might keep clothes vague for now though and let you dress your character later on, until you get a taste of the inventory/bartering system-—you have to deal with MY poor fashion choices for a little bit.) but that being said, about character customization, if there's something that's lacking here and you'd like to suggest an addition I'd be all ears. This is what I'm planning to implement so far:

skin details (acne, scars, vitiligo, rosacea)
facial hair
make-up
piercings
eyewear (glasses, no glasses, eyepatch, prosthetic eye)
gender-affirming customization (for ex. use of binding)
* a note on the body type section, I kind of had this idea of digitally drawing some silhouettes of different heights, shapes and sizes, and allowing the player to click through arrows to select a rough estimation of what their body-type might look like. I'm going to do an art dump later this month, and I have a few sketches of what I'd kinda like to do with that, but I'm still toying with it, because even that could be a little limiting in terms of options. if any of you had thoughts on that, I'd love to hear them.
**I think it might also be cool to kind of have drawings of different hairstyles available to the characters, arranged in the card formats like the previous gender options in that same red colored sketch format.
speaking of art though--and this is purely tangential so I apologize, I'm sure you've taken notice of some of the art being repetitive--for the moment that's purposeful. I'm planning to commission some work for the cards to be implemented in a later update--so what you're seeing are just placeholders for now.
okay! with saturday's notes out of the way, plans for the rest of the week. I need to finish the timeline and then I need to make it readable to people other than myself. it is currently incomprehensible and of the few people that have gotten their eyes on it only one (1) could make sense of my mad ramblings. (shout out to friend of the game bianca from exiled from court if any of you are familiar with her or her stuff, we are big bianca fans here.) After that I need to do some edits with the new update and such, and poke at the code.
Tonight after I post this, I'm specifically working on sending a few more emails to betas (know that sending emails is. my personal hell because of intense social anxiety. BUT we must persevere. emails will be sent tonight.) after that, I have to work on the phillip/kc/sam schedule + calendar for this month, just to keep the three of us on the same page. I'm in the process of looking at some stamps.com printers for sending out packages with this next round of physical rewards and ordering the merch (hehehe)
okay. super long update for our first one of the year, but I am so excited to get to keep working with you guys :) i'd like to thank you all for your continued support and I can't wait to show you more of the little universe i've crafted :)

I have now finally seen the Mario movie. It was Pretty Good. Here are my wordy thoughts on it. (I am going to spoil the entire movie. Duh.)
In many ways, the Mario movie does what I wish the first Sonic movie had done. They just took the characters and the premise and the world from the games, and made it a straightforward animated adventure movie. It's bright and colorful and remixes things JUST enough to include fun elements from multiple games, and it doesn't make Mario get adopted by James Marsden or whatever. It even has the music!
That's all you really need, right? Right...?
I'll get this out of the way up front. Chris Pratt was fine. He's fine
If anything, it really feels like they did the movie a disservice by letting us hear so little of the Mario voice in the previews. It took one scene for Pratt to disappear into the role for me. It was totally fine. If anything, I found Charlie Day's normal voice coming out of Luigi WAY more distracting, even if I did like him in the role.
Everyone else was pretty good, for the most part. Jack Black was obviously very good as Bowser, but I'm biased. Seth Rogen does the Seth Rogen laughs as Donkey Kong, but I thought DK was fun, too. (I liked his little rivalry with Mario where he was just constantly giving him shit.) The only casting choice I truly hated was Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. I hated every line that came out of his mouth. He sounds atrocious. Just the worst. I swear to fucking god if they do a DKC movie and we have to hear him for 90 minutes
I did think Peach was lacking, but that was on the script, not Anya Taylor-Joy's performance. It's cool to see Peach fight, but it's one of those all too common instances where the writers put so much effort into making the main girl kick ass and be an effortlessly confident girlboss that they forgot to give her an actual personality. Not that I'd point to Super Princess Peach and its mood swing superpowers as positive representation or anything, but there's a happy middle ground, surely. Shrek was 22 years ago, just having the princess do flying kung fu kicks isn't enough.
Okay. With the voices out of the way, let's talk about the big picture:
It's way better than the words "Illumination Mario movie" implied, and I mostly enjoyed my time with it. The spirit of Mario is there 100%. But I'd also describe it as "ruthlessly efficient."
This was perhaps the main complaint critics had, and they were absolutely right. People have responded to these totally average reviews with "Well, what did you expect? Shakespeare?! It's MARIO!!" Like, yes, I would prefer it if the movie I paid to see had writing that was good instead of bad. What a shocker. My issue isn't that it's not "high-brow" enough. The problem is that it feels mercenary. It feels like an editor went through and deleted almost every line of dialogue that isn't some form of exposition, at the expense of the pacing. Any scene that's not a montage or some sort of action is kept as short as they could make it, with barely any room for embellishment, character interaction, or anything other than the bare minimum word count to hit all the typical Save the Cat Hollywood screenwriting 101 story beats to the letter. There aren't even as many jokes as you might think (and the ones that are there are extremely hit or miss, including a lot of the slapstick with Mario himself).
Mario and Peach's little arc together in the front half of the film is probably the worst example of this pacing. Even having read reviews that complained about how fast Peach goes from meeting Mario (by her admission the first other human she's ever met) to deciding to train him as the new savior of the Mushroom Kingdom, I was SHOCKED at how fast it was. They don't even lampshade it.
Peach takes Mario straight into the big training sequence where he learns how to use mushrooms and jump over platforming obstacles. Peach is apparently already a hypercompetent platforming pro and a great fighter, so there's no clear reason why she's taking the time to train this random guy to be half as good as her when the world is in danger. Then they set off on their adventure, Toad joins them, and we get a VERY brief travel montage. It's about thirty seconds total - just long enough to give Peach a line about how she wants to protect this beautiful world of hers to try and give her some stakes. We get the genre-mandated nighttime campfire heart to heart, which is exactly long enough to have Mario say he misses Luigi and to have Peach give the two sentence summary of her origin story and not a second longer. Then they reach the Kongs, and their big journey is complete. (They barely interact for the rest of the movie.) So much of the movie is like this - always ready to get on to the next scene as soon as a new one starts.
I'm not criticizing the script because I expect The Super Mario Bros. Movie to be a prestige drama - although there are certainly halfhearted attempts at a dramatic arc. The stuff with Mario's family was a fun enough idea, but again, ruthless efficiency. We get one quick scene with them at the start to give Mario some pathos, because I guess Save the Cat said he's gotta have some pathos. And then Mario gets his dad's approval amidst the action of the final battle in Brooklyn to resolve his arc, just so the movie can end as quickly as possible once Bowser is defeated. (Despite now having the approval of their family and their community back in Brooklyn, Mario and Luigi move to the Mushroom Kingdom off-screen without a single word dedicated to this decision, because that's where they live in the games.)
Look. I am not comparing it to The Godfather. Don't give me that shit. I am not asking for an extra half hour to explore Mario and Luigi's childhood trauma. I am not asking for the complex inner workings of the Mushroom Kingdom monarchy. I know this is gonna be a basic Hero's Journey adventure for kids. It just feels like it's turning down so many opportunities to have a little fun with the characters, to let them interact and play off of each other, to let there be some adventure on this adventure. This is the first time we've gotten to see these characters interact with fully voiced dialogue in a very, very long time! "Yeah, it's not High Art, but it's FUN!" Stories are fun! Character interactions are fun! The script could be having so much more fun!! It is adamantly against making the Story parts of this story-driven movie any more Fun than they functionally need to be!!!
Mario, Peach, and Toad's journey to find the Kongs is shorter than the training montage that precedes it. After the opening, Bowser mostly just sits in his castle and waits for the third act to start. Luigi's there, too, but he only gets one scene with Bowser and then the movie mostly forgets he exists until the climax. He doesn't even get to try and sneak out of Bowser's castle and get up to hijinx. He's just there to be a motivation for Mario, so he sits in a cage for half the movie. It's the bare outline of a script with action scenes added in.
Aside from the fact that it's Jack Black singing as Bowser, I feel like this overly-efficient script might be part of the reason why the "Peaches" scene stands out so much. It's a moment that didn't strictly need to be there to keep the plot moving or to provide an action setpiece. It's not even a reference to another Mario thing. It's just a fun and memorable little character moment that's there for its own sake. That's what the movie needed more of. To stop and smell the roses more often. To play in the space.
To be clear, this isn't a unique problem with this movie. Critics have been noting for years that second acts are disappearing from big Hollywood movies in favor of the Act I plot setup and the Act III action, even though Act II is supposed to be where you get to explore your actual premise. And lots of animated movies give me this exact same vibe of being too "screenwriterly," or feeling like they had an executive breathing down their necks and demanding changes based on focus testing. But these common issues are why I come away mostly feeling like the movie is on the better end of "average," rather than totally blowing my mind. You have seen this movie many times before, just not with Mario in it.
And, of course, there's the music. The score by Brian Tyler based on various classic Mario and Donkey Kong tunes (frustratingly all attributed to Koji Kondo) is absolutely beautiful, but it's unfortunately frequently overshadowed by the licensed music. Everyone already complained about things like the use of Take On Me in place of a lovingly arranged DKC medley, but it feels illustrative of the tug of war the movie is caught in the middle of, between wanting to be a lavishly faithful Mario movie and wanting to be a generic tentpole animated adventure movie. Every single licensed song used is the most obvious, overused song they could have picked for the scene. It reeks of cynical executive meddling and it took me out of the movie every time.
But there really was a lot of care and love put into this movie - more than probably any other video game movie ever made, not that that's a high bar. I don't want to underplay that too much amidst all my complaints spurred by the absolutely insane response to the reviews.
Aside from the countless background references that people will be picking apart for years, touches like the Captain Toad tune playing in the background of Toad's introduction or the Mario Kart 8 menu music playing in the kart garage really help bring it to another level of authenticity. I also enjoyed seeing some more obscure Mario enemies that felt like they were picked more for being fun to animate than for being nostalgic and marketable. No matter how many times I sarcastically pointed to the screen and deadpanned "reference. reference." I am not immune to noticing these things and smiling. I am not immune to the DK Rap. These alone don't make the movie good, but it's nice to have a video game movie that feels like it was made by people who like video games.
Most importantly, the animation is great throughout. It's leaps and bounds ahead of other Illumination work, and it's the best the Mario cast has ever looked. They even made Donkey Kong handsome, somehow. They're all so squishy and expressive, and they move so fluidly - especially in the action scenes. I particularly liked the more kinetic ones like the aerial Banzai Bill chase and the Mario Kart sequence. Truly, the Mad Max-inspired car battle on Rainbow Road where Mario literally does the speedrun shortcut is this movie firing on all cylinders.
Other, more hand-to-hand fights nail the Popeye-esque vibe Mario should be going for. He's an underdog who gets the shit kicked out of him by bigger, stronger opponents until he gets his signature powerup and turns the tables on them. My favorite animation of all probably came from the use of Cat Mario to turn the tide in the DK fight. They had so much fun making Mario move like a cat. Again, it feels like a choice made because it'd be fun to animate rather than just a nostalgia move.
It's that animation and that attention to detail that carry the film, really. They elevate it from mediocrity into being a fun watch for a fan like me, albeit one I couldn't help but pick apart with Anthony as we watched it at home. I'm glad I saw it, but there's a lot of room to improve with the inevitable sequel. I hope they do. I can't deny that I had fun with the movie, but I hope next time that fun is partially because of the script instead of in spite of it.
Stray thoughts:
Overall, I would say I enjoyed the movie a lot more than Sonic 1, but probably not as much as Sonic 2. Not that these movies need to be pitted against each other.
I hated the Luma. I hated how hilarious they clearly thought the Luma was. They have the fucking Luma break the fourth wall to end the movie and start the credits. This is going to be a deep cut for fans of bad animated films, but the whole time I was just thinking of the little fish from Romeo & Juliet: Sealed With A Kiss who's just the director's kid saying random nonsense. You know I'm right
I rolled my eyes at the "our princess is in another castle" joke and several other jokes that would have been dated in a gamer webcomic 20 years ago but I guess they had to be there
How much of Brooklyn did Bowser's giant floating castle take out? We know 9/11 happened in this universe because the Freedom Tower is there, hasn't New York been through enough
I can't believe there's a Diskun easter egg
The dog is the most Illumination character design in the movie. It felt like it wandered on set from The Secret Life of Pets

do you respond to comments? uhh... occasionally. Social anxiety kicks my ass and so I put my energy into writing fic instead. I love every single comment I get and reread them any time I need a pick-me-up, but I am a bad author who doesn't reply...
what is the fic your wrote with the angstiest ending? hmm... probably pyrrhic victory, but Capsized is also a contender
what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? considering I write mostly fluff and crack, this is a surprisingly difficult question to answer... I'm gonna go with either if you like it, then... or thrown into the nest. Or maybe don't blame the stork? (Some lovely reader out there is shouting at their screen, "Flaky, you goof, it's obviously ____!!" and they're correct.)
do you get hate on fics? Nope, not really! Some readers express that they wish I'd done certain things differently, and a couple have said I ended a fic badly, but I don't think I've received anything I'd consider hateful.
do you write smut? uhhhh... sometimes. When it's the best way to tell the story I have in my head, then I'll write smut. But it's still a bit uncomfortable to do. I'd like to think I'm getting better at it?
craziest crossover? I'm not sure I've actually written anything that could really be considered a crossover, but A real voyage of discovery is kind of a mash-up of Harry Potter characters in a Star Trek-y world? And it has alien!mort, and I think he's nifty.

what are your writing weaknesses? Worldbuilding, continuous narratives (as opposed to short scenes without much context), plot-heavy narratives, description, writing the main characters in true opposition to each other, fleshing ideas out rather than keeping it (overly) brief... I'm sure I'll think of a bunch of other things as soon as I post this.
thoughts on dialogue in another language? I'd like to! I speak French reasonably well, and I'm lucky enough to have some fandom friends who speak other languages, so I'm sure I could beg their assistance.
favorite fic you've written? Hhhhhhh, why must I choose? I'll go with naïve melody, because it still gives me the warm fuzzies. I'm just so proud of the tone, and I really like how that Voldemort comes across.

A/n: quick little Nathan x reader dialogue / blurb. Bickering / sass, bit of silliness, slight fluff. (Edited a bit since first posting!)

“It’s rude to do that,” you scold, as Nathan leans over your shoulder, peeking at your scrawled journal entry. You wrap your arm, protecting the page from his prying eyes - a little too late though, you fear.
“It’s rude to violate your NDA, sweetheart.” You scowl at him. “Okay. Not rude. Illegal… But also rude.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Yeah. If you’rewriting about my robots, I’m gonna have to confiscate that.”
“I’m not writing about your robots,” you lie, but Nathan simply eyes you over the rim of his glasses, arcing a thick eyebrow. You tut in concession. “Fine. You got me.”
He extends his hand. “Give it here then.”
“Woah. No way. I’m not giving you my diary.”
His face twists in distaste. “You keep a diary? What are you, 12?”
You study him and hum pensively at the thought of Nathan employing similar habits. “Hmm, yeah. You know what? I can totally see why self-reflection really wouldn’t appeal to you.”
He perches one pert ass cheek on the short edge of your desk. “Dear diary,” he ponders, considering what form his own entry might take. “Today I was fucking amazing.” He pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose and smirks at you. “You’re right. Would get a little repetitive.”
You fail to return his smile, instead, offering an alternative. “Dear diary. Today I ate 3 packets of hot Cheetos in my sweats. Almost rubbed one out right there on the couch - before remembering the effects of chilli dust. Lucky escape.”
You are satisfied when the smirk drops from his face for a moment. He clears his throat as your assessment hits a little on the nose. “Whatever. I’d still rather be me on my worst day.” You scoff. “Anyway. Seriously. I need to take that.”
“You’re kidding.”
“Relax. I’ll redact anything in violation and hand it right back to you.”
“Um, emphatically no.”
“Oh please. Worried about me uncovering your deep, dark secrets? Do you think I’m clamouring for your pedestrian internal monologue? You don’t need to keep any secrets from me, honey. I’m literally not interested.”
You clutch the notebook to your chest all the same, and you mumble something under your breath. Nathan urges you to speak up and you repeat it, a little louder. “But… I’ve.. um. I’ve written quite a lot about you.”
He flashes you a lopsided smile, all smug. “Of course you have, honey.” If it’s possible, his tone grows even more grandiose. “I suppose it’ll be interesting to read how you mere mortals perceive me.”
At that, you’re just about done.
You arc an eyebrow, and you hand the notebook over to him. “Knock yourself out, Nathan.”

“‘Dear Diary, I met an asshole.’” Nathan quotes, storming into the living area with your opened notebook balanced across one broad palm. “Seriously?”
You scoff from your vantage point on the couch as he eyes you indignantly, immediately reaching for the remote to turn down the volume. This is going to be good. “Fun read?”
“Trite, rambling, redundant.”
You stifle a smile. “I dunno, Nate. You seem invested.”
“Surprisingly, some of your comments were actually quite insightful,” he admits, with a cock of his head.
You nod in emphatic agreement. “‘Dear diary, I met an asshole.’”
He scowls at you. “Not that one.”
You stretch your legs out, kicking your feet up onto the coffee table. “I dunno. Seems on the money to me. I mean. What kind of asshole reads someone’s diary?”
He sighs, and you scooch over a little so he can plonk himself down next to you, dropping the notebook in your lap. You leaf through it, finding that text on particular pages had been redacted with thick black marker. He’s really gone through every single bit of it.
“Happy now?” you ask him, risking a glance and finding him sat sulkily, arms folded over his shapely chest.
“No.”
“Okay.” You don’t ask him to elaborate, and instead reach to turn up the volume - until he interjects, that is.
“I expected…”
“Expected what, Nathan? Expected me to be impressed by you or something?”
He scratches his buzzed head. “Well duh.”
You turn you body in towards him on the couch, leaning one elbow against the back edge and propping your head so you can get a good look at him.
“What do you care anyway? Last I heard you were uninterested in my ‘pedestrian internal monologue’.”
He tuts. Wafting his palm through the air and his eyes fluttering closed in frustration. “Never mind.”
“Okay.”
You’re happy to oblige him. In fact, you are about to turn back to the tv once more until-
“-You really think I’m an asshole?” His voice is soft. Vulnerable. At least - more so than you’ve ever heard it. It gives you pause. Subdues the edge of your bite.
“Well… When I first met you? Hell yeah.”
His dark, calculating eyes study you. “And how about now?”
Your cheeks heat subtly under his gaze, burning with self-consciousness. “Well,” you dismiss. “That’s redacted.”
“Come on.” He elbows you gently in the ribs. “I know all your secrets now.”
“Not all,” you counter, attempting to come off mysterious.
“No?”
“Nuh uh.” You smile at him, beckoning him closer with a waft of your hand, until he leans in placing your mouth a hair’s breadth from the shell of his ear. “Now, Nathan? You’ve been downgraded to annoying.”
His eyes roll into oblivion as you laugh and tease him.
“Come on, Nathan. It’s not as though you like me any better, right?”
For once, he seemingly doesn’t have anything else to say. His gaze simply flits over your face, his eyes -dare you say it- warm. That is, until he grabs up a notebook from the table, turns to the back page and starts scribbling. Then, the smug, arrogant countenance makes its return.
“What are you doing?”
“Writing exactly what I think of you.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Mmm hmm.”
He scribbles hastily, keeping the page covered from your view, and smirking to himself all the while, his mouth dragging up beneath the raven brush of his beard.
Then, Nathan unceremoniously places the closed book on the table right in front of you, before wafting (smugly) out of the room.
You eye the book with intense interest. As though suddenly, nothing else exists. You eye it enough that you can feel your gaze almost burning a hole in the back cover.
Exactly what Nathan thinks of you? And he left it right there? In front of you?
Of course, after a moment’s deliberation, you can’t help yourself. You reach for it, arm outstretched.
“Ah ah, princess.” You jump out of your skin, as Nathan’s tinny voice bleeds through the intercom. “What kind of asshole reads someone’s diary?”
You. You think you’re that exact kind of asshole, and what’s more, he knows it.
You reach for the book and flip to last page, and you begin to read.
“Dear diary…”

in a writer’s perspective, here’s a whole ass infodump on how complex angela’s character really is
so while i’m happy people are finally seeing the nuance in angela’s motives and actions, she still did bad things. she still shared intel and government secrets to a criminal organization. she still engaged with corruption wherein she manipulated and helped lavinia to smuggle her own diamonds for sombra and kill a rally driver. and while lavinia was a shitty person, she still killed lavinia not because she was a shitty person, but because she was trying to protect her identity as the mole.
but here’s where my writer’s perspective kicks in: usually, most stereotypes of corrupt government officials (yes, angela’s still a corrupt government official) portray them as a power and money hungry heartless sociopath who does not love anyone. and as much as that trope is fun to see and hate, it’s still a very diegetic trope. (most writers i know in the philippines is tired of that trope ahshahaha)
for those unaware of the term diegetic btw, it’s basically ���telling” in show and tell. if your writing is diegetic, it means you’re basically dictating your audience how to feel for a character, which is frowned upon. non-diegetic writing however, is subtle. the writing isn’t there to reprimand you, it’s nuanced and makes you think. and that thinking will make you feel and empathize with the character.
that’s what makes angela such a complex character; she basically defies that trope and is the definition of the word non-diegetic. while she is still corrupt, she didn’t do it for power or for money. she did it because she had no choice. and she had to protect her family.
stereotypical corrupt government officials have everything handed out to them in exchange for protecting their “dynasty”. while angela’s sombra, everything she has done in the field of science is still self-made. most of the bureau admires her for her wit and tenacity, and hell she won a whole ass nobel prize, which is something that’s hard for her to achieve as a woc. she even found a cure to an epidemic in WEEKS TOPS and started a whole charity for orphans and adopted children with lars because she herself was an orphan and she felt guilty about being a part of sombra. she does ALL of this with genuine intentions and not out of obligation to sombra.
if stereotypical corrupt government officials have children, they either pressure them to follow in their footsteps or neglect them completely. angela isn’t like that. she is GENUINELY happy to have her daughters to the point that she was smiling and telling lars how happy she is to have children with him even if she literally just gave birth to TRIPLETS. (if giving birth to one child is painful enough imagine giving birth to three)
and while she jokes around with lars that they’d definitely follow in their footsteps, they still encourage their daughters to be curious and explore various possibilities in the world. she constantly worries about them, and the triplets and lars are the reason why she decides to be loyal to sombra. because if she ever betrays them, sombra would target them first. and she didn’t want that.
with this, what makes angela such a complex character is she constantly puts up three facades around people: a professional, intelligent coworker to the bureau, a loving and loyal wife and mother to her family, and a cold, manipulative pawn to sombra and their schemes. when she got exposed and arrested, she didn’t know which front to put up anymore, which adds SO MUCH to her very non-diegetic dialogue in in plain sight.
she tells the bureau she did all of this because she was loyal to sombra and she believed they’d give her daughters a better world because she knows her coworkers know her as someone who thinks rationally, and at the same time she knows sombra is everywhere so she said that to appease sombra’s perception of her. when she talks to lars post-arrest, she still stands firm about her loyalty with sombra, but she breaks when lars assumes she didn’t love him and confesses all the sacrifices she made just for them to be together.
and then there’s the whole cultural phenomenon of asian people being extremely loyal to their family to the point that they feel that they are “in debt” to their family because they raised them. that’s what angela was trying to say when she says that she had to be loyal to sombra. not because she wanted to, but because she was culturally and morally obligated too.
i’m not going to talk about the darkest hour because they ruined angela in that case hasjaj (they were cooking but then they burnt it /j)
but tldr, angela being the mole would’ve been so good if there was proper foreshadowing and they didn’t ruin her character in the end, but i genuinely love how angela’s character breaks stereotypes and is very non-diegetic about her motives

FIC REC WEEK 43 – ENEMIES TO LOVERS

I pretty much love all of the ideas and AUs that imposterhuman comes up with for these boys, they're so much fun! Especially the ones where they are clearly rivals, which is why I chose to rec them here. The characterizations are spot on, and I really love the dialogue – imposterhuman writes fantastic sassy banter.

Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: G Words: 2,179 Tags: No Powers AU, Firefighter Bucky, Detective Tony
Summary: Bucky and Tony weren’t dating, because a firefighter and a detective couldn’t date (never mind that Tony hadn’t slept with anyone else since their thing had started, and he and Bucky hung out with an alarming frequency, and the whole precinct thought that they were an item). It didn't matter how many nights they spent together, how Bucky had a drawer of Tony's things and vice versa, they just couldn't. It was a classic Romeo and Juliet situation, if Romeo and Juliet actively disliked each other on top of everything.
Reasons why I love it: Aw, look at our idiots in love, they're adorable. The dialogue in this is hilarious, and I really enjoyed the rivalry between the different departments. And of course, it takes a kick in the ass for Bucky and Tony to finally admit how they're feeling. I love it, and I bet you will too!
all dressed up for a hit and run
Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: G Words: 2,174 Tags: FBI Agent Bucky, Criminal Tony, Flirting
Summary: “I’m not sleeping with a criminal,” Bucky said sternly, trying to pretend like his resolve wasn’t wavering. “C’mon, baby,” Tony purred, raking a nail down his chest. “You’ve got nothing on me. Innocent until proven guilty, right? Technically, I’m not a criminal.” Bucky raised an eyebrow. “You’ve stolen billions of dollars worth of artwork.” “Allegedly,” Tony shrugged artfully. “Everyone needs a hobby."
Reasons why I love it: Oooh, Bucky, my man, you're in danger. Tony is sexy as hell as an untouchable art thief, Bucky doesn't stand a chance at resisting him. I love the UST in their dialogue, and the entire setting just makes me want to read a whole novel about this verse. It's amazing, and I really hope you give it a shot for yourself!

Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: G Words: 1,005 Tags: High School AU, Science Bowl, Banter
Summary: “You sound uncertain,” Bucky said. “Maybe you should give up. In fact-” he dug in his pocket for a moment, producing a piece of white cloth that he thrust at Tony. “Here.” “Ew, Barnes,” Pepper wrinkled her nose. “No one but Tony wants to see your dirty underwear.” He barely spared her a glance, intense gaze focused on Tony. “It’s a white flag, and you better start waving it now, doll.” “Does he just… carry that around?” Rhodey asked quietly. “Like, all the time?” “Probably,” Bruce said placidly. “He does seem like the type.” Tony ignored them and pushed Bucky’s white flag back at him. “The only thing that I will be waving is your decapitated head on a stick in front of your weeping mother!”
Reasons why I love it: Tony is such a little shit, I love it! And I bet Bucky loves it too, that little faker. I would read a million more words in this verse, as is the case for pretty much all of these, really. This fic is fantastic, and I hope you go and check it out for yourself!
a pirate's life for me
Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: T Words: 4,295 Tags: Pirates, One Night Stands, Pining
Summary: If Bucky Barnes didn’t stop chasing him across the seven seas, Tony was going to have to do something drastic, probably involving cannons, illegal activity, and a shit ton of rum. “You need to sort out your relationship with Barnes,” Rhodey scolded. “He’s chasing you like a scorned lover.” “Scorned?” Tony scoffed, shaking his head. “I was perfectly courteous the morning after. It was a mutual decision to not see each other again, seeing as he’s supposed to arrest me on sight.” “You left before he woke up, didn’t leave a note, and stole something valuable, didn’t you?” Rhodey looked to the sky like he was praying for strength. “Tony, if we get arrested because you had a one-night stand with the commodore’s first mate, I will send you to the gallows myself.”
Reasons why I love it: I grew up with Pirates of the Carribean, so this fic was like catnip to me. The reference are perfect, I love the banter between Tony's crew, and of course, the Winteriron is magnificent. I adore this fic, and I bet you will too, so I hope you'll check it out!

Summary: Tony was going to kill Bucky Barnes. Tony was going to cut the other thief’s flesh arm off and beat him with it. It was bad enough that they were both running jobs in the same building, but they had to be going for the same necklace, too. Really, the universe hated Tony. He stared at the ceiling, sending up a very nasty prayer in case someone was listening, then turned back to the job at hand.
Reasons why I love it: I really enjoyed the back-and-forth in this one. They're clearly both equally skilled, and the power play that comes with that is just delicious. I love this one, and I bet you will too, so you should definitely read it!

Supergirl but I've dabbled with Legends of Tomorrow and have a few unpublished fics for different fandoms that I might share
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Rich Girl With Issues (I swear I'm almost done with the last chapter. The flu kicked my ass but I'm finishing up. My weird Lena becomes a vigilante fic. I still am amazed that people like it as much as they do)
Maybe I'm Too Afraid to Admit It (Kind of cute Kara realizes she has feelings for Lena. I really don't know why this one resonated with so many people)
Somewhere You Can't Follow (My weird (and poorly written) Legends and Supergirl crossover. I would love to go back and actually rewrite large bits of this but the dialogue is on point, at least. Oh and Lena gets to see her mom again so that's a plus)

I do and I don't. I'm a lot more offline than I was when I first started writing and if too much time passes, I feel weird about responding since I feel like I'm bothering people but I am trying to be better about it. Because I really do cherish each one

Probably nothing I've posted yet would count but I do have one that I plan to post soon-ish that's so angsty I took a year to decide whether or not to share it.

I think all of my one-shots have pretty standard happy endings. I think I'll say that either Rich Girl or Nothing Gold Can Stay will have the happiest endings (in my opinion) Wait (a little longer) and see
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I'll get the occasional weird comment. Nothing out of the ordinary. I did get a really rude bookmark once that kind of made me laugh. They hated the story yet still chose to bookmark it which is a choice.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I dabble in it. There's a snippet floating around somewhere on tumblr that I'm too lazy to find. I'll share it once I finish the first chapter. It's a bit out of my wheelhouse but its fun? Very different kind of writing than what I'm used to.

I write a lot of crossovers. I think when I write fic, I want to see something a little strange and unique that I can't find elsewhere. I'm working on a fic now where Kara meets Matt Murdock, that's not an interaction I ever envisioned myself writing.

I don't think so? To be fair, I haven't ever cared enough to check. I don't think I'm popular enough to get a fic stolen xD
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! Someone translated one of my fics into Russian. I was incredibly flattered that they liked it enough to do so.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, and I think it's mostly because I'm quite a selfish writer? I know what and how I want to write so collaboration is quite difficult. Maybe I still have some leftover trauma from all the group projects of my past.
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
Supercorp, if that wasn't very, very obvious.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I'll finish them all!
16. What are your writing strengths?
I really don't know and that's not just me being modest. I don't really think I do anything particularly well?
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Being succinct. Every ficlet wants to be a multi-chaptered story and every multi-chaptered story wants to be a novel
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I think if implemented well it can be a great addition. If it's merely tacked on, however... I feel it not only doesn't add anything to the story but it makes the reader aware that they're reading a story. A bit of the magic is lost in the clunky execution.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
On AO3 Supercorp but I've dabbled in fandom for years and years. There's ancient Xena fic somewhere in my mother's basement
20. Favorite fic you've written?
Probably has to be Rich Girl but I really am fond of Swear Not by the Moon, as well. I've really enjoyed expanding the scope of Supergirl's world a bit and watching the characters slowly grow over the course of the story

what if the gone series and mortal kombat had a crossover,,,,,
No secret that lately my hyperfixation has been Mortal Kombat 1 and i can’t stop imagining a universe where Gone is a hit tv series and a character gets introduced into MK as a guest fighter (like Omniman, Terminator etc). ive been thinkin about this for like a week straight now and had to write out some of my ideas cause this will literally never happen BUT.imagine if it did .nothing wrong with imagining right?? (im insane🫶)
Gone has a LOT of characters that would make great fighters in the game, but Drake would definitely be the most likely choice since 1) the MK series already includes characters with telekinesis, fire power, gravity etc so his whip hand would be a unique addition to the roster, 2) he’s a Gone fan favourite and 3) Drake’s character fits in perfectly with all the over the top blood & guts of mortal kombat lol. I can’t see a character like Sam or Dekka willingly carrying out the unnecessarily gory kills that happen in the games LMAO
Some stuff to mention before I actually get into the notes ive scribbled down about drake as a fighter: in my mind it’d be Gone/Hunger drake before brittney & their regeneration, just cause it saves things getting too complicated with the bodyswapping etc etc plus MK already has characters like Havik that can regenerate so it makes for fun dialogue lol. I wrote up this stuff based off the gameplay in MK1 so just.visually imagine that in ur brains when reading ok thanks
In MK1 each character has two fatalities - Drake’s first one would feature the coyotes since they were a major part of him as an antagonist near the end of the first book. The second fatality would bring in the wire he tries to slice Brianna up with during Hunger, while referencing ahead to Plague where Brianna splits him through the neck & waist.
I have a rough idea of what Drake’s fatal blow would be like - starting the fatal blow with a basic whip slash, then after the kameo fighter does their hits Drake would move in and whip the opponent again, spinning them around then kicking the back of their legs to knock them down onto their knees. The camera would shift to show the opponent’s hands encased in a cement block (signature coates academy move lol), before Drake grabs the back of their head and smashes it down against the block for the X-ray hit.
Haven’t thought of the actual brutalities for him yet (he’d definitely have a couple with his guns) but I think each character has around 4 or 5 different lines they can say after completing a brutality - i did have ideas for those so i wrote some down :>
Last thing i though up for fun was a bunch of fight intro dialogue against different characters on the roster; these r all so stupid and some of them aren’t thaaat great but yknow what. i had fun thinking them up (if anyone has any more ideas pleaassjsje let me know and ill add em lol)
I know i talk a lot about how much id love to see Gone as a 2D-animated series, but thinking about 3D models of the gone cast in the style of MK1 would be so sick… would also be fun to see other characters carrying out their fatalities on drake LMAO, always love to see that guy getting his ass kicked

So multi-chaptered Coral Island Rafael romance fic is happening. It's plotted. Chapters are ready to be written. Gonna be rated T, though. I'll save my sex headcanons for a different fic
One thing that's gonna be fun is doing a little bit of research. The idea is that at some point, Amelia and Rafael have to fight some sort of monster together. At first I was like they'll both use swords. Cool. Easy to write
But then I got a bit of dialogue tonight. Turns out he uses a freaking MORNING STAR to fight. Not just that. One of his own creation
(Look at that blush. He's so cute and soft I can't handle it)
So now I have to go watch some videos of people being kick ass with morning stars because I literally have no idea how people can use them without knocking themself out!

My attempt at rationalising who the rare pair could be:
The characters must follow at least one of the following criteria-
Very little presence in game, likely not extending beyond a scene or two in person.
Has a more common ship, or the characters they are shipped with are more commonly found shipped together.
Very little external presence, either in merch or fanworks.
The characters likely have to have some crucial information either "hidden" (e.g Alphys crushing on Asgore being... concerningly not know about) or revealed after the main burst of Undertales popularity.
And from this, I have gathered my closest guesses as to who it could be.
Mad Mew Mew X Asgore:
Maddie was revealed in the switch port, long after the initial spike of popularity.
She was revealed to be crushing on Asgore in Deltarune, a fairly hidden piece of dialogue that lacks her face, matching the above criteria.
Most commonly shipped with Undyne + Alphys (OT3 fr)
To most players, only appears in YouTube playthroughs and has no merch of her ( I think?)
Asgore has little to no merch, owing to his reveal at the end of the game.
Only really shows up in one scene (two if you count Neutral Fight and True Pacifist ending as different scenes)
Has more common ships, like with Toriel (Asgore, I love you but you gotta let it go man) and Gaster ig (Kingdings is a fire ship I'm ngl)
Do I need to go into how little the fanbase acknowledges this man's existence?
Do I honestly think that people are shipping Maddie and Asgore enough for a whole two fics to be made?
I wish No, no I do not.
Is It still fun to think about this logically?
Yes.
Does it make more sense to be Alphys X Asgore with the given criteria?
Yes, but I Stan maddie too much for her to not get this chance.
... I'll be damned, that does only have two fics. BUT. 1) saying this with all the love in the world do you really think I'd care enough about asgore for this kind of thing 2) they are both fics by my good friend tali and i know for a FACT their writing kicks ass. so I'd never say anything negative about em
in conclusion: nice try. but you can try all the combinations you want... i never said there were only 2 characters

So you're tired of making boyfriend ASMR and you want to move on to making cinematic audio roleplays huh? You came to the right place hot stuff, here's a crucial tip. If you want to make cinematic audios, you have to collab. This is non-negotiable. You need multiple voices to make your story feel cinematic and grand in scale.
"But Escaped!" you say, "I'm too embarrassed to ask, who would want to collab with me? I'm nobody".
Shut the fuck up you sexy-voiced SON OF A BITCH. You are somebody! You are a creative person with a unique vision. If you show passion for your own creativity, your passion will spread to other people and they will enthusiasticaly join.
"But collabs take longer, the algorithm will cut my reach if I don't upload 3 times a week!" you say.
Fuck the algorithm. Also that's not even true, just get good engagement early on from your core fanbase and the algorithm will give you reach. The problem is that you'll never get a core fanbase in the first place if your audios fucking suck. Make audios that don't suck and you'll get reach. Desmond ASMR uploads once a century and still gets reach because his audios are actually worth getting excited for.
"But Escaped, I don't need to collab! I can do lots of voices!" you say, "Also, why are you in my house with a bag of frozen lemons?"
"DELUSION!" I shout, as I beat the shit out of you with a bag of frozen lemons for five minutes. You might be able to do multiple voices, but you should only voice multiple characters when they have radically different voices, and even then limit it to one or two additional characters. People will pick up on the common denominators in your voice's pitch and timbre. Eventually it will always sound like you are a mad man talking to himself. Your audience won't envision the scene, they will envision you sweating inside of a cramped sound booth. I promise, people can tell when you are talking to a different version of yourself with a whacky accent. It's confusing and sounds cheap.
"But Escaped! I feel bad asking for other VAs to voice all those lines!" you protest. Fucking why? Kill that mindset with a gun. Voice actors love to voice act, most find it refreshing and fun to be able to act without the added responsibility of having to write, edit, and promote the audio. People especially love to play villains, losers, and other characters that they can play free of the pressure of having to be likable or endearing to the audience.
"BUT ESCAPED!" you say, nervously eying my lemon bag "I... I don't need to write supporting character dialogue, I can just leave pauses for implied dialogue like with the Listener character right?"
My fury reaches its apotheosis. I swing the lemon bag with the strength of twenty-seven demigods. When you wake up from your coma a month later, I spit in your face. Implied dialogue is there for the audience to self-insert, it is for Listeners only. What the fuck are you doing using it for supporting characters? I should kill you. It makes you sound like you're talking to invisible, silent ghosts. It makes the listener feel like they're a prisoner, being spoken to by their deranged captor. It makes you look like a lonely dweeb loser who couldn't get anyone to come to his birthday party. And in fight scenes? Forget about it. Swinging your fists at silent, invisible enemies? Being like "Oh yeah, you think you're tough? Take this!" at no one? Motherfucker who are you talking to?
I promise, having just one or two additional voices give a handful of lines will elevate your story far beyond what it would have been without them. You listeners will feel like they are part of a much bigger, living world rather than a strange hollow world where only one human being in the entire universe has the ability to speak.
Anyway have fun! Mwah mwah mwah, I love you, go make some kick ass audios.

So recently I've had a flurry of notifications from AO3 for a lot of my Torchwood stories, including several reviews. Thank you if you've recently left one! :) Needing a distraction (and wondering why one story in particular was suddenly being read so many years later) I decided to read some of my old stories at night and had some thoughts. . .
I remember how much fun Jack and Ianto were to write, as well as the rest of the team. And I think I did a pretty good job with their dialogue and banter.
I created some cool original characters and settings, not to mention some kick ass plots I'm pretty proud of (and some not so much)
I sure wrote a lot of time travel and time loops. The one I read last night was not very good, though. :P
Speaking of that particular time loop, it took me more than half the story to remember what it was about and what was going to happen. Ironic that I wrote it and that it was also about memory loss.
Sometimes my writing was pretty darn schmaltzy for two grown men fighting aliens.
I can't believe I turned Santa Claus into a time traveler with a vortex manipulator and that Jack and Ianto worked for him. The first bit was kind of cool and actually well thought out; the end was kind of schmoopy.
Adam was an annoying character.
Fanfiction solves all the plot and character problems, including ones that maybe weren't even there to begin with. And a lot of fanfiction is ten times better than canon, like almost every story out there about how Jack and Ianto first hooked up after Lisa's death.
I wrote a story where Ianto considered leaving Torchwood but didn't. Are there any stories where he did, but kept his memories and kept dating Jack? Just went and worked a normal 9-5 job and hoped he'd get to see Jack in between Torchwood runs? I could see it working. I half wonder if I wrote it but don't remember.
The Torchwood premise was really quite ridiculous, a team of five misfits protecting the city from a dangerous Rift and aliens. At the same time, so many amazing possibilities!
I once started a story about Ianto's shadow self and wish I'd done more with it. I wonder how many other ideas are in my years-old unfinished folder.
Again, thank you if you are still reading TW fanfic and leaving kudos! Even years down the road, it touches the writer and we appreciate it. It's been fun to jump back in for a while. Maybe when I'm done rewatching Stargate I'll give Torchwood a binge. :)
