This was the worried-but-trying-to-smile face I wore for most of this school year (or maybe the whole pandemic?). I sat with a laptop on my thighs in a playroom while Zoom kindergarten was conducted behind me (Baby Shark “brain breaks” and all). I served snacks and lunches, set Alexa to remind us about flute practice and reading logs, cleared space so my daughter could jump rope indoors for virtual gym, and did more Art Hubs than I care to count. ✨ I also woke up at 6am to write/edit Small Town Monsters, and I worked most weekends. ✨ And now as my kids celebrate their last day, I realize the one skill we all learned this year: resilience. Forget psychologists preaching about the “growth mindset,” and “helicopter parenting,” and a “participation trophies,” and a lack of independence in today’s youth. What these kids went through this year deserves respect and a round of applause. ✨ They went from virtual, to hybrid half days, back to virtual, back to hybrid, then finally fully in-person 6 feet apart —all with no snow days, sleepovers, birthday parties, or school plays, very little sports, extremely few play dates, and 8 hours of mask-wearing. No one can say they lack resilience anymore. I’ll fight you if you try. ✨ So cheers to all the educators, parents, guardians, and students reading this. “Girls are not bossy! Maybe girls need to do all the work, or nothing gets done!” That was what I vented at my nine-year-old while we read, “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” by #JudyBlume. 🖤 Toward the end of the book, the main character, Peter, has a group project with his classmates Jimmy and Sheila. Spoiler Alert: Sheila does almost all of it, while the boys complain and goof off. The boys call her “bossy” and unload on her when she dares to want to take credit for her extra work. (To clear, the illustrious Ms. Blume is showing that The boys aren’t being fair.) 🖤 Still, I turned to my daughter and groaned, “You know what, you be Sheila! Because Sheila cares about her grade, and she’s not gonna sit around and expect someone else to do the work for her. And she SHOULD get credit for those ten pages she wrote and the handwriting! And maybe if girls were told this in 4th grade, you’d have more women in board rooms running companies instead of bunch of boys who think a rushed-job on a poster board deserves just as much praise!” 🖤 My daughter’s response, “What’s a board room?” 🖤 Anyway, I already know my daughter is a Sheila. I am a Sheila. And Sheilas are the ones holding this country together during a pandemic, so be thankful. 168 hours

Laura Vandenkam

I just listened to Gretchen Rubin's podcast, where she interviewed Laura Vandenkam. This lady is an upholder. She has FIVE KIDS and she's skinny. So I watched her TED TALK and she talks about how one week has 168 hours. Let's break it down:

work: 35 hours. An hour commute, which is 5 hours. So that's 40 hours.

grooming: an hour a day, including getting ready for work, shower, and getting ready for sleep. So that's 5 hours

sleep: optimally, I sleep 11-6:30. That's 7.5 hours, but we'll round it to 8. So that's 56.

What is that: 101 hours

What is that per day: 18

Which means I have: 67 hours in a week to squeeze in joy and 6 hours in a day

What I'd like to do:

30 minutes a day to exercise

1 hour to write the novel

30 minutes to journal

--Wow, journaling is really important to me. So that's easy. I can journal in the morning. I just have to go to the coffee shop first thing in the morning, from 6:30-7, and be back in time for the baby.

When to exercise: tricky! In the morning, I spend it with Baby. But I could jump out of bed, lace up my sneakers, and just go for a walk before I get to the coffee shop. I could wake up Gigi too. He won't want to go, but I can entice him with a treat. We could go to the park so we could both run around.

Husband would be sooo grumpy, but it would benefit us all in the end.

When to write the novel: after cuddle time, at my desk. It's hard because of cuddle time, and Husband doesn't agree that something needs to be a reward. But then that is how it is and that is good. "Your lack of planning is not my emergency." Plan for rain. So, after we put Baby to bed, we'll do some Cuddle time. And then I'll walk the dog while feeling very present and, after that I'll write for at least one hour.

So, that is: 30 minutes of exercise, 30 minutes of journaling, and 1 hour of writing. 2 hours! And then we have 1 hour of Cuddle time, which means I still have 3 hours left over for self-care-don't-rush-we're fine time.
