2023 Writer Year-In-Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi, I’m RaisedonRadio & FortressofmyPast on AO3 and FF.net. This is an on-going tradition since 2015. Check out my past year-end posts: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015.
Tagging a few, but if you come across this, consider it an open tag! You’re welcome to tag me back, I’d love to read it!
@writercorianarose @shesailsships @talesofsorrowandofruin @azdesertwillow @goneahead @littlemissfandomworld @dreams-of-kalopsia @halleyuhm
Big change for me compared to last year—in addition to NaNoWriMo, I actually posted fanfics! I tried to add some new questions to this year’s edition, I hope they might even move out of my tiny circle.
Total Word Counts: 51,920 for 2023 NaNoWriMo 15,570 on 2022 NaNoWriMo project 19,193 for July 2023 Camp NaNoWriMo (mostly fanfics) 28,310 in published fanfics (this number is overlapping with camp nano, I wasn’t paying attention, so I’m not going to add everything together)
Total Number Of Completed Works: 10 Total Number of WIPS worked on this year: 10 or so How Many WIPs do you still have: 23
Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? I wrote way more than expected! I seriously didn’t think I would do NaNoWriMo again. And I published ten fics! That’s ten more than last year!
Did you take any writing risks this year? The NaNoWriMo project was definitely a risk for me. I basically had an idea and no outline. It was quite a challenge to my perfectionism issues—I had to basically never reread anything and just keep going, fully aware that I can better foreshadow the ideas that came up halfway through in the next rewrite.
Biggest Surprise: I wrote for NaNoWriMo again, which I was pretty sure wouldn't happen lol, and hit the word count, all through discovery writing, and having very little idea where I was going with it.
Biggest Disappointment: I dropped that above mentioned project the moment November ended! I can tell it has potential, hidden in there. I will definitely return to it.
Do you have any writing goals for the new year? I’d love to at least finish the first draft of the 2023 NaNoWriMo project, bringing it to a tentative end so I can actually reread it and go from there. And keep writing fanfic, and maybe even work on the 2022 nanowrimo project…
Fanfiction Questions Below! (if you don’t write fanfiction feel free to skip or rework the questions for your original works.)
Fandoms I’ve written in this year: I wrote fics for 7 different fandoms! For the following kdramas: Island, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Memorist, Royal Secret Agent, W: Two Worlds, May I Help You?, and a little Korean Web drama called Handmade Love.
Your most popular story of the year? That would be Besides You with 327 hits and 47 kudos. However Superhero got the most comment interaction with 4!
The story that was easiest/or most fun to write: I Think He Knows was fun to write! I do just love brooding with a heart of gold formerly immortal male leads.
Hardest story to write: Rescue Me, Superhero, Restore, and Prayers & Promises were four works that I had left for dead, and came back and found them to be basically finished and just needed proofreading. (So just in case anyone wondered how I turned out three of those in like two days: they were actually done and I was hellbent on getting them out of my WIPs list)
Your sweetest story: That would definitely be Superhero. I altered my normal narrative style to better fit the child’s character, and I was really pleased with how it turned out.
Your saddest scene: I feel like I hit a lot of angst this year, but nothing really sad?
The sexiest moment you’ve written this year? *coughs* I wrote five pieces of smut. (Half of my fanfics were smut this year?!) Umm, I’m torn between Beside You and Don’t Blame Me? But also Never Be the Same and Take On Me???
Your favorite tag: (whether you use it the most or just something witty/perfect for the story) My brother announced to me that he reads all my tags (he was trying to embarrass me about one of my smut pieces) so I did a shout out to him in the next fic. He saw it within the day, I was actually impressed.
Tumblr media
Most unintentionally telling story: (have you accidentally or purposefully exposed a detail about yourself?) Religious guilt seems to be a reoccurring tag this year. In all seriousness, not quite sure why, but yet it kinda makes sense? (its complicated lmao) And for some reason not one, but two fics ended with marriage proposals?! (I’m so single.)
Are any of your fics named after/heavily inspired by music? I’m RaisedonRadio and it would be concerning if—checks list—less than 8 of the 10 fics weren’t named after songs, haha! (I’m actually just really bad at naming fics…)
Good To You and Besides You are both songs by the band Marianas Trench, and are heavily inspired by the songs. Rescue Me is by OneRepublic, one of those more vibes than lyrics inspired. I Think He Knows by Taylor Swift was definitely on repeat for that fic, as well as Don't Blame Me. (Poems), Prayers, and Promises was more a steal the name of the song by John Denver, for some reason I think Cold by Corbyn was on repeat when writing that one. Take On Me was named more for the similarities between the MV and the series! Never Be The Same was for the vibes of the song by Camila Cabello but not really the lyrics.
What’s your own favorite story of the year? Maybe it’s cheating but I’m not sure if I can really choose? I know it’s not a common writer sentiment but I really do like them all for different reasons.
Like I churned out Good To You and Besides You within ten days of each other in July, after not writing any fanfic basically for a year and a half.
And then I pulled Rescue Me out of the dead drafts pile and made myself work on more description.
I Think He Knows was my first foray into a brand new fandom.
Don’t Blame Me is one of my rare canon divergence fics.
Restore was another dead draft that I found to be mostly complete, and decide to release into the world even if I knew there was so much more I could have done with it.
Prayers and Promises was not only another new fandom, but for some reason, I decided to write for a side character. It’s still sitting on just 1 hit and that makes it all the better that I really wrote it for myself.
Superhero was out of my comfort zone of writing for a kid’s perspective and I was so happy with how it turned out.
Take On Me was a draft sitting at less than 1k words and I challenged myself to finish it before the new year, and got it done in two days.
And then, to finish it all off with the intense desire to have ten fics under the belt for 2023, I wrote Never Be The Same in less than two days for the last drama I had watched, and the speed that the last two fics were actually finished was a huge change for me.
Fanfiction risks you took this year? I wrote fanfic for not one, but two fandoms that I had to create the first tags for on AO3! Also, as I started to slip into just writing for kdramas this year, I’ve basically become my own proofreader and editor at this point. Any mistakes are my own, lol.
My favorite part of fandom this year: That would be getting two kudos and a comment on I Think He Knows, one of the fics that is the first in its fandom tag. To actually connect with more fans of such a tiny project was so cool!
Thanks for reading and here’s to next year!

Meet the Writer Tag
Thanks for the tag, @thewritertiffany!!
Rules: Answer 10 questions, write 10 questions, and tag 10 people
1. What’s your favorite genre to read? I think my absolute favorite has to be fantasy, but historical fiction and sci-fi are really close. 2. Would you want to live in the worlds you create for your stories? Maybe? Not some of them, but I like steampunk well enough! If I had to pick, I’d live in The Alchemist’s Daughter Universe. 3. Do you have a designated writing space? I don’t! I actually need to change it up every now and then so I don’t fall into a routine. I write the most in bed (which is supposed to be really bad for you, but whatever). 4. How would you describe your writing style? I wish I had any idea. I think I tend to write really long sentences, but that’s less of a style and more of an overattachment to commas. 5. Have you published any stories? Fanfic or original? I’ve published 30+ fanfictions and one original novel, Crash and Burn. 6. What’s your favorite writing tip or piece of advice? My favorite writing tip is to just write without editing, even though I never follow it. 7. Are you a beginner writer? Or have you been writing for a while? I’ve been writing for six years, but recently I’ve gotten a lot more serious with it. 8. Do you have a writing routine? I don’t, but I wish I did. 9. Have you met any authors in real life? Yes! I went to a conference two years ago and met Renee Ahdieh, James Dashner, Marie Lu, and Heather Petty, among others. 10. How far along are you in your current WIP? I’m on the second draft of The Alchemist’s Daughter, about 30% through.
My questions:
What’s your favorite book?
Man vs. Society, Man vs. Self, or Man vs. Man?
Antiheroes or loveable villians?
What’s the worst thing a character of yours has done?
Favorite trope?
Are you a pantser or a plotter?
Moodboards or playlists?
Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what genre?
Which of your WIPs have you been working on the longest?
How long have you been writing?
I’ll be tagging @writings-of-a-narwhal, @sleepy-and-anxious, @ravenpuffwriter, @writercorianarose, @iamidentical, @bowtomypointlesswords, @minny-king, @griffinwriting, @writingwith-love, and @writing-at-dusk.

Ten Random Lines
Rules: Pick any ten of your fics, scroll to the midpoint, pick a line (or three) and share it. Then tag ten people.
I was tagged by @radio-chatter! Thanks so much. This one looks fun!
Tagging: @writercorianarose @thedemoninthecorner @dreams-of-kalopsia @shesailsships @eyeliner-vampire @alonelyturtle @goneahead @csakuras and anyone else with fanfics they want to play this game with!
Ah, nothing like finding an error in a years old fic when doing a tag game...
Anyway, on to the lines. I jumped all around with the ages of the fics, and tried to do so with the fandoms, but if you are familiar with my works, you know that Ghost Hunt will dominate the list.
House of Memories / Fandom: Memorist (k-drama)
We’re not that close, she had told him, even if it had been slightly in jest. She had no right to watch over his restless slumber.
2. Day One / Fandom: Ghost Hunt (manga)
Only Mai could recognize the slight hitch of emotion in his voice.
3. Fix Me / Fandom: Ghost Hunt (manga)
“What do I need to do? Give over some blood, recite some spells?”
4. Unchained Melody / Fandom: Tale of the Nine Tailed (k-drama)
The moment broke when the music on her phone changed to something harsh and jarring.
5. The Last of the Real Ones / Fandom: Ghost Hunt (manga)
Luella told Eugene she believed him, of course. Mainly because she knew Oliver wouldn’t mess up his room for a prank. But no, she had not felt it.
6. Rebel Just For Kicks / Fandom: Final Fantasy XV (game)
Noctis pulled the truck to the side and went around the car. Ignis could see the fear-stricken faces of the passengers within.
7. A Noble Vow / Fandom: Pandora Hearts (manga)
She didn’t want to fall into another stupor and risk saying something stupid again.
8. Lost in the Echo / Fandom: Ghost Hunt (manga)
He dropped her off about a block from her home, and they never saw each other again.
9. Champagne / Fandom: Ghost Hunt (manga)
Why he had wandered down the liquor aisle in the first place was a good question.
10. Winter Bird / Fandom: Ghost Hunt (manga)
Taka and Chiaki had always treated her kindly – maybe a little awestruck, but they never put her on a pedestal, never confined her to a cage.

2022 Writer Year-In-Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi, I’m RaisedonRadio & FortressofmyPast on AO3 and FF.net. This is an on-going tradition since 2015. Feel free to check out my past year-end posts: 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015.
In the past, I have always called this my Fic-in-Review. But, well, I didn’t post any fanfics this year. But I DID write.
Tagging a few, and if you see this post and want to do it, consider yourself tagged! @writercorianarose @radio-chatter @shesailsships @talesofsorrowandofruin @goneahead @alonelyturtle
Total Number Of Completed Works: 0 (well, 1 for my nano project, though it definitely is FAR from completed.) Total Number of WIPS worked on this year: 5 WIPS Neglected This Year: 13
Total Word Count: 65,299 (53,873 from Nanowrimo)
Fandoms I’ve Written In: In addition to my original work, I actively worked on fics for Tale of the Nine Tailed (Korean Drama), and Sell Your Haunted House (Korean Drama)
Looking Back, Did You Write More Than You Thought You Would This Year, Less, Or About What You’d Expected?
I wrote way more than expected.
Did You Take Any Writing Risks This Year?
I decided to join National Writing Month about two weeks before November. And I completed it!
Do You Have Any Writing Goals For The New Year?
To start the second draft of my Nano project. And to finish and post at least a couple of fanfics!
Biggest Disappointment:
I really wish I had shared a few fanfics with the world this year! I’m too tight lipped with my original work to create any interaction, ha! I often post a least one fic in the last week of December, but I started playing Don't Starve again...character died on December 30, and now I have no fics to show for it. XD
Biggest Surprise:
Finishing Nanowrimo! Gosh what a ride that was! Will I do it next year? Absolutely not Who knows!
Thanks for stopping by and I look forward to next year!
Since I didn’t post any fics this year, these questions I normally answer didn’t really apply. But if you use this format for your year-in-review and want to use these questions, I thought I’d include them below, and I hope to fill them out next year!
Most Popular Story Of The Year? What’s Your Own Favorite Story Of The Year? Story Of Mine Most Under-Appreciated By The Universe, In My Opinion: Most Fun Story To Write: Most Unintentionally Telling Story: Biggest Disappointment: Biggest Surprise: My Favorite Part Of Fandom This Year:

2021 Fic in Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tagged by @radio-chatter! Thank you! ^^
Hi, I’m RaisedonRadio & FortressofmyPast on AO3 and FF.net. This is a tradition going on for years! Check out my prior year end posts: 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015.
Total Number Of Completed Works: 2
Total Word Count: 4729
Fandoms I’ve Written In: Ghost Hunt (Japanese anime/manga), Memorist (Korean drama).
Looking Back, Did You Write More Fic Than You Thought You Would This Year, Less, Or About What You’d Expected?
Less. This past week I had hoped to finish another WIP, but instead I took the time to digitize a bunch of writing that had been trapped in notebooks. It was actually a lot of fun, there were so many stories I had forgotten about. But, do you know what this means? I ADDED SO MANY WIPs. -_-;; XD
What’s Your Own Favorite Story Of The Year?
I like them both for vastly different reasons.
Did You Take Any Writing Risks This Year?
I wrote for a fandom that only had two other fics in it - one in a language I don’t speak and one a crossover. It was fun because I had to know I was going into it with no anticipation of reader interaction. Truly had to write it because I wanted to.
Do You Have Any Fanfic Or Profic Goals For The New Year?
I’d definitely like to write more. Finish a few of these WIPs hanging around.
Most Popular Story Of The Year?
It’s not right to pit these two fics against each other, they are for very different fandoms, and I literally published the one on December 27th, so…
But I do like to compare the stats for AO3 and FF.net: Call You Mine had 6 reviews/29 favs on FF.net, and 6 comments/34 kudos/9 bookmarks on AO3. That’s a big deal, in the past years Ghost Hunt fics would get much more interaction on FF.net, now AO3 is breaking even.
Story Of Mine Most Under-Appreciated By The Universe, In My Opinion:
I appreciate every comment, kudo, and fav. I know I say this every year, but it’s true. I write for relatively small fandoms and whenever a reader takes the time to say hi, my heart glows.
Most Fun Story To Write:
Call You Mine. I went into it with the desire to make something incredibly fluffy as a birthday gift and I think I succeeded.

First Lines Tag
Thanks for the tag, @talesofsorrowandofruin!
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line, then tag some of your fellow authors!
I did a similar game to this a long time ago! It’ll be interesting to see if my opening style has changed any.
These are all fanfictions that can be found on my AO3. They were written from 2021 to 2017 are listed starting with the newest.
Some observations I found:
16 of the 20 are under 15 words long.
1 out of the 20 is in first person (but 3 of them could be, if just from the opening line.)
17 of the 20 introduce a character by name.
3 of the 20 open with dialogue.
My favorite? Probably from Rebel Just for Kicks.
Tagging!
@writercorianarose @thedemoninthecorner @dreams-of-kalopsia @radio-chatter @csakuras @scribblesandsorcery and anyone else that has first lines they want to share! Tag me!
1.
At first, Seon Mi didn’t give the last words of Jin Jae Gyu any weight.
- House of Memories, Memorist
2.
It was the weekend.
- Call You Mine, Ghost Hunt
3.
Masako Hara paused at the street corner.

I think I made like one post about Nanowrimo this month, but just wanted to say whoa! I hit 50k words! I had no idea what to expect going in when I had decided to start barely two weeks before November.
I definitely challenged my perfectionism when it comes to writing first drafts and just getting the words down, and that was my goal.
I’m ready to leave these characters alone for a bit and go dust off a few fanfictions starting in December, ha!

My #1 post of 2022
Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💖
Oh interesting, I've never done this before!
Since 31 of my 45 fics are from the manga/anime Ghost Hunt, that's going to dominate the list, but I'll stick in one different fandom just to prove I do write occasionally for others!
Hello everyone, I am RaisedonRadio & FortressofmyPast on AO3 and FF.net. Here is five of my favorite works by yours truly.
Lin's List
A list of 25 things for Lin to refrain from - and keep Oliver from doing - during their stay in Japan. As suggested by Madoka Mori.
A humorous little oneshot under 1000 words. An oldie that has aged well.
The Last of the Real Ones
Being determined to expose them all as frauds might mean losing a piece of himself along the way.
I will admit, I am a oneshot writer. So here is one of like, two chaptered works in my portfolio (not including oneshot collections).
A piece that focuses on a young Oliver when his paranormal skills start to take over his life.
Same Old Lang Syne
Should old acquaintances be forgotten, and never brought to mind?
A post-series look at if the gang drifted apart. Yes, it's based after the Dan Fogelberg song.
Lost in the Echo
Can you call it a reunion if you’ve never met before?
A look into one of Ghost Hunt's biggest mysteries - the death of Eugene Davis.
And the honorary mention fandom, for a kdrama titled Tale of the Nine Tailed:
Unchained Melody
He’s teaching her to drive, why can’t he teach her to dance, too?
I don't normally fall for non canon couples, but I fell hard for Rang and Yu Ri.
Thanks for reading!

First Stories Tag
What’s the first thing you ever remember writing
What’s one piece of advice you wish you could give yourself for writing it
The first piece of writing I have in a notebook was about a kid that was sent to another dimension and turned into the native species of the location--unicorns. I'm pretty sure we were going to find out they were originally from this place and had been sent to the human world for protection. But alas, I never got past the first few chapters. I dearly wish I had dated the pages. Looking at my handwriting I had to be under 13.
Well, the one piece of advice I would have for my past self would have been: finish the story, and understand even if it doesn't come out right the first time it can be fixed. This is coming from my current early thirties self who is only just overcoming the problem of not writing it down even if it isn't coming out as immediate perfection.
Tagged by @the-inkwell-variable thank you for the tag! We clearly a) loved unicorns and b) had/have a problem with finishing works. Nice to meet you! XD

Believer
Kuroda wasn’t a liar.
Read it on: FF.net / AO3 / Below the cut!
By Coriana for the AO3 Ghost Hunt Challenge 2: Obscure Emotions
The Prompt: Opia
The ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable—their pupils glittering, bottomless and opaque—as if you were peering through a hole in the door of a house, able to tell that there’s someone standing there, but unable to tell if you’re looking in or looking out.
"I'm not a liar."
Shibuya-san's eyes stared straight into her own. His dark eyes knew more than she had ever thought to consider before it was too late. He had seen through a façade even she couldn't see through. It was those dark eyes that she had first noticed about him, but had been too unreadable to decipher what was hidden behind them.
Kuroda covered her mouth with her hands, the intensity of the situation pounding on her with no remorse. She already felt beaten and bruised. She didn't know what would be left once they were done with her.
"At first I thought that you had just been pretending to have psychic powers," he said, "But I honestly felt perplexed over the events transpiring, plus Hara-san confirming there was no presence of spirits."
Don't compare me to her, Kuroda begged within herself. There's nothing to compare.
He continued to speak, but so much of it faded into the background. Memories squirmed in the back of her mind, people laughing and pointing and jeering. Girls that would pull her hair and throw the glasses off of her face. If Kuroda hadn't been quick enough to grab her glasses before one of the girls stepped on them, they stepped on her hand instead.
She was never too sure when it really started, but she would imagine it was around that time.
"Since junior high school you were always able to get peoples' attention because of your strong psychic powers. You told people there were evil spirits in the old school building. But… what would have happened if there were no such thing in the building? And if all events that were believed to be spirit-related had actually occurred due to land subsidence?"
Yes, it was around then that she would do anything, and everything, to be noticed, even if there were consequences. Telling everyone she could see spirits and was able to share cool paranormal facts with people had worked for a time, until Kuroda had begun to believe it was true herself. Had begun to think that maybe she could see spirits and wasn't making it all up. It seemed to be after her realization of this when everything crumbled and she had suddenly become an outcast again, but connected with the words 'weirdo' and 'idiot' and the knowledge that she really could see ghosts.
But maybe when she thought about it, perhaps it was what they had always called her behind her back, anyway.
Spirits are here… They must be. A poltergeist is going to manifest. It must happen.
"The unconscious mind acts on its own," Shibuya-san was saying.
Taniyama-san raised her hand. "Before exams I always wish the entire school will collapse, but it never happens," she said.
"It depends on your talents. I believe Kuroda-san is a latent psychic." He turned towards Kuroda, his eyes regaining her full attention. "You probably do have some form of PK, even if you're not aware of it."
The sentence released a breath Kuroda had been holding. But it was deeper than releasing a breath of air captured in her lungs. It was releasing a doubt and a fear she had been holding onto for many years.
"For Kuroda-san, the existence of evil spirits in the building was necessary. In order to obtain attention from others… no matter if it was good or bad."
Kuroda tried to hold any tears back, tried to hide them behind her glasses. Her glasses, which she had from a young age, had always been there to hide the emotion that was evident in her eyes.
"Wow, I can relate to how that feels," Taniyama-san said. Kuroda turned towards her, only to see her smiling. "The truth is, deep inside… all we want to be is special, I think."
"So you're saying she wouldn't have been stressing out until you mentioned land subsidence," Miko-san said, sending Kuroda's stomach into knots. "Then how do you explain me getting locked in the classroom and Kuroda-san being attacked by the spirit?"
Shibuya-san looked towards Kuroda, "Shall I explain?"
Kuroda swallowed hard, not trusting her voice, and nodded.
"The reason you got locked into the room was caused by this being stuck in the doorsill." Shibuya-san held up the nail, which Kuroda could only assume that he had been carrying around since he picked it up. He knew more than she even wanted to admit.
"I suspected this a while ago, but I didn't think it important enough to tell you."
"A nail?" Miko-san snapped, looking like her entire face exploded. "Someone intentionally did that to me. Who would… you?" She rounded on Kuroda, making her step back in fear of Miko-san jumping her.
"I'm sure it was meant to be a small prank," Shibuya-san said. "Right before that, you were giving her a hard time."
"And then what about the broken videotape?"
"It wasn't broken. The footage was intentionally erased."
"Did she do that, too?"
"By the time Mai arrived at the lab that day, Kuroda-san was already there. So most likely, yes." Shibuya-san looked directly at Kuroda, but so was everybody. Miko-san's eyes especially looked like daggers.
Kuroda held her hands tightly, trying to relieve some stress inside of her in any way possible. Her heart was thudding so bad. How could this be, she had never been caught so badly before. She was a better actor than this. No, that's not true, she wasn't acting.
They didn't understand. The spirit really had attacked her. But when she had gotten to the computers to rewatch the footage, excited that she would have the proof to show them… there had been nothing there. It had not shown a spirit pulling at her hair or strangling her. It only left Kuroda confused. She wasn't lying. Had she erased the videotape? She couldn't remember.
A warm hand patted her on the back. A comforting gesture. But Kuroda was too cold to feel any warmth from Taniyama-san's actions.
"But what about the Principal? We were supposed to prepare this building for demolition."
"I plan to tell him many spirits of war victims existed in the building, but we exorcised them all so it's okay to begin."
He looked towards Kuroda again. "Are you okay with that, Kuroda-san?" He prompted a nod from her.
Perhaps his actions seemed kind to everyone in the room, but Kuroda believed he was mocking her. She could see it in his eyes.
"I'm still not convinced," Hara-san said. "Why don't we just tell the Principal the truth?"
Kuroda felt like her lungs would not hold air anymore, like too many holes had been punctured into them by each word spoken, keeping her from drawing a full breath. She glared at Hara-san from behind her glasses, her blood seeming to boil. If people thought Kuroda was a liar, she knew a doll-like person as phony as Hara-san wasn't telling the truth, either.
"Kuroda-san's already feeling bad enough, I don't think we need to make things worse for her," Shibuya-san said.
Kuroda looked at him, and felt relief, and yet fear. They could hide the truth, but they all knew. They all thought that they knew. And there was something about looking into his eyes for the last time, and realizing how truly unreadable they were, so indecipherable. Were they lying to her? Were they trying to convince her of something that wasn't the truth? Trying to tell her she was a liar?
Maybe she was a liar… maybe she really had only been a magician on the stage.
No, she refused to think like that. It was what they wanted her to think.
 I'm not a liar.

Tea & Mochi
Mai has been able to taste more teas and sweets ever since Masako and Ayako have been coming over once a month to visit and chat.
Read it on: FF.net / AO3 / Below the cut!
A Ghost Hunt fanfiction by Coriana [one shot, 2100 words]
Ah, I frankly hated when it was my turn, every three months, to supply something for Masako, Ayako, and I's get-togethers.
I couldn't help it that my taste buds were of higher quality, even though all I could buy from the store was mochi and bancha. Masako and Ayako on the other hand were able to afford their (and mine) expensive taste buds.
Thankfully it wasn't my turn to choose the tea (although, really, Masako and Ayako 'happened' to bring by sencha these last few times). I can't help that I still choose to purchase my lesser-class, strongly scented green tea. It had grown on me. I told them even though it is a cheap tea, it's still good for you. But remembering Ayako's priceless face, which had been raised on the expensive green leaves of gyokuro and shincha tea, would always remain a precious memory from when I had served her bancha.
But Ayako would not be coming tonight.
And it wasn't because I had served her bancha that day.
I mean, sheesh. Seriously, who would stay with their husband on a girl's night out…?
Hm. I wondered what type of tea for two Masako would bring, since it was her turn this month.
Every month for the past few years the three of us would get together (at traditionally, my house, but now that I think about it I don't know why) and we'd bring tea and sweets and simply just watch movies and talk. These times were always bubbly, happy memories that I held onto.
I've tried so many different treats and teas thanks to them these last few years. Ayako even bought me my own dobin teapot for my birthday last year.
So here I was at the confectionery shop trying to decide what I would bring that may or may not compliment Masako's tea. I settled on daifuku. Soft, round mounds of dusted rice cakes filled with sweet red bean paste. I kind of wanted to buy uirō, too. Thick, chewy, steamed rice bricks of all colors, just like what Ayako brought last time (except she had made them…) but I thought that was maybe over doing it.
As I was walking home, I again got distracted by my local convenience store, as I had when I had walked by it previously. I really wanted to do it as a joke, but… I really shouldn't.
Before I knew it I was walking back to my apartment with the box of sweets tucked under one arm and holding a case of canned Chu-hi in my other hand. 9% alcohol isn't that much, right? Besides, I liked the flavor of strawberry. It kind of made me laugh to think of whatever high-class tea Masako will prepare and then handing her a can of sugary alcohol.
Ha.
When I got home I changed into shorts and a loose tank. I had managed to clean and tidy my apartment earlier this Saturday. Hey, this has actually been really good for me that we always did it at my house – it always got cleaned once a month.
I started setting out the daifuku and wished that I had bought the uirō. I hope next month Masako brings monaka wagashi again like she had last time she had brought the sweets. Sweet bean jam sandwiched between thin wafers? Mmmm.
I filled the kettle with water and put it on low. Ayako basically bashed into my head that water for tea should always be near boiling but never actually boiling. Even though I told her you were supposed to boil water for bancha, she would hear none of it.
Yada, yada.
I wanted to bring out my dobin. I loved my dobin. I kept it in my only closed glass door cabinet, and I took it out during our monthly gatherings, or any time I felt the need to be special. It's the cutest little rounded teapot, an earthy green with delicate yellow flowers surrounding its darker banded girth. It had an upturned spout and a flat lid. Its domed handle was woven wood.
Yeah.
Basically I just liked to hold it.
Masako would usually bring her high-quality sencha and her round delicate pink kyusu with its short, cubby handle that jutted out of its side.
Her sencha laughed at my bancha.
I sat on the couch and ate a daifuku, rearranging them on the plate so that it didn't seem like I had eaten one. It was odd for her not to be here yet, she was normally prompt. I had turned off the water in fear of it boiling and the wrath of Ayako if she heard the rumor that I had boiled water for tea.
This wasn't the first time that Ayako hadn't come, but maybe Masako was deciding that she didn't want my personal company this evening.
I accidentally consumed another daifuku as I thought.
Feeling a tad lonely in the guise of anxious waiting, my wandering mind drifted to Ayako and Monk getting married three months ago. It had been the first real wedding that I had ever attended and really been a part of. Masako and I had gone with Ayako and her mother to look at dresses and cosmetics. I had even gotten a dark blue sundress bought for me for the occasion. I got to go to the salon, too.
I was mysterious in blue with curled and crimped hair. Make-up on my face, my lips dabbed in red, my eyes outlined in shadows. Black high-heels on my feet. I was nothing compared to the real bride, with her silky red hair rolled into curls and her stunning white lace and chiffon dress.
Ah, Monk and Ayako's wedding album was to die for, it was so artistic and dramatic. Amusing, too, in a way, with Ayako's posh and poised friends and family. Monk's family was respectable. His friends were another story.
Masako and I were in a few pictures, too. Close-up shots of us side-by-side, cheek-to-cheek, looking very poised. And of course with the bride, too. It made me pleased to see how much of a counterpart doll I looked next to Masako with make-up on.
It was a day where I had felt good about myself, where I actually felt beautiful and alluring.
So it happened to be the day that Noll didn't show up.
The door emitted knocking sounds as I pondered if anyone would notice another daifuku had disappeared.
Masako both looked exhausted and happy. She immediately slipped off her high-heels and ran a hand through her hair as she let out a gust of a sigh. "I landed the movie role."
"Ehhh? You did it this time!" I was pleased I was the first (or, well, almost the first, I'm sure) to have heard this news. I spread out my hands to emphasize big letters. "Masako Hara makes massive splash into the movie industry with debut title."
"I'm not even thinking that far yet," said Masako as she unpacked her tea caddy and kyusu.
Oh! I should turn the water back on!
Masako had been trying for movie roles these last few years, landing minor ones. She did modeling on the side, but her TV show had its last episode three years ago. I think the main problem was her agent apparently thought she should only be doing horror movies, due to her background, as if Masako had needed any more horror in her short life. This was one of the three romantic comedies she had auditioned for, and her looks obviously suited the needs of the character's role.
Oh, and perhaps her talent did, too. Haaaah…
Masako stuffed a daifuku in her mouth and already had another one in her hand as she chewed. She was probably starving from her busy day. Maybe I should make her rice or something…? Nah, the daifuku should fill her up.
Before turning the water back on for tea, I thought this was a perfect time to make my surprise. "Well, since we're celebrating," I said. I went to the kitchenette and pulled two cans of Chu-hi from the fridge. "Congratulations."
She laughed, but didn't accept the can. She didn't look as shocked as I would have liked, either.
Instead she leaned back into her bag and brought out a tall slim bottle of Umeshu. 15% alcohol, steeped ume fruits in shochu (they were still in there at the bottom), sweetly tart tanned liquid... She had planned ahead.
"Ah, you always have to outdo me…" I said as I set the little cans on the small table and went to get glasses for the fruit liqueur.
We watched mostly romantic comedies. Or, well, we dissected and analyzed and laughed at them all the way though. We were doing it for research for Masako's upcoming role.
Maybe the movies we picked were just bad. Maybe we were just a little tipsy and everything seemed funny.
At the end of the last movie, Masako's happy laugh turned into a sad sigh as the credits rolled.
"Eh? Everything okay?"
"I guess," Masako said, looking downcast and solemn, the stark opposite that she had been a moment earlier. "I might not be able to come to these gatherings anymore. I guess that I might get too busy."
I kept my smile on, the alcohol dimming the truth of the words. "Oh, you know it's fine. Ayako will still come and then you can come whenever you can –"
With a halt, I contemplated. The last daifuku seemingly jumped into my hand. "I guess Ayako is going to get busy, too." It felt a little weird to me. Masako was moving forward in her life and career, and so was Ayako.
Things were changing but I was still me.
Masako patted my shoulder. "It's okay, Mai, it's not like we won't ever see each other again. We're going to keep in touch. We can still get coffee together like we do now. And we're still going to be able to get together. We're not going to be busy all the time."
"That's right," I said, "I know that. It just felt a little weird all of the sudden. You know, Masako, my door is always open, okay? So you don't have to feel lonely."
Masako smiled. "Thanks, Mai. Maybe you'll be able to come see me on set, too? Wouldn't that be cool?" Masako's eyebrows waggled. "Maybe you can even land a role, you know?"
I lightly punched her in the arm. "Oh, please. I can't act at all. You learned that when you were practicing your script with me. I'm terrible."
In the end, we decided to watch one more movie, but it ended sadder than we had both anticipated, so then it was time to call it quits. It was time for Masako to catch the bus, too.
At the door, I watched her put her heels on, carrying her tea caddy. I was leaning against the door frame, kind of toasted and thinking sleep was a really good idea.
"Listen, Mai," Masako said, after our final hug goodbye. "I won't forget about you, right?"
"Of course, Masako, I know that. You too, 'kay? I've been living alone almost all my life, I won't be bothered by it. I'll be waiting here for you guys, someone has to keep the group together, right? Bye, Masako."
But once she was gone, and I was left alone in my apartment, I felt different. Masako had a new job career. Ayako and Monk were together and moving on. John had to return to Australia. Yasu was super busy with college still. Noll and Lin kept to themselves, like always.
Already I had failed in keeping the group together.
Here I was, comforting and telling people not to be lonely, when it might actually be I who was seeking the comfort of having them close, so that I would not be lonely.
Ah, I'm so selfish and I don't even realize it.
"I'm fine," I told myself as I finished cleaning the aftereffects Masako's visit. "They can all take care of themselves."
But then it happened, and I didn't even know what was happening. Tears pooled from my eyes and spilled down my cheeks and I stifled my quiet sobs, afraid someone might hear me.
But who's going to take care of me?
Notes: personally I like formosa oolong and jasmine green tea.
