With all of the recent NaNoWriMo drama that's been going on, I'm trying to get back to my writing roots. For me, that means carry a notebook around again, so I asked my spouse to pick up a few for me. So far I've written three out of the last four days, and honestly, that's more than I usually manage in any given month, outside of November... At least in the past several years.
I'm trying to think of this as a positive, some kind of silver lining coming out of all the badness coming out of NaNo HQ.
I used to carry a notebook every day. I still carry a small one for notes and ideas, but I haven't carried a full sized one since leaving college, and these past few years it has felt like the only time I have the time and motivation to write is during a NaNo event. I do really well when there's just a touch of competition, so I have never yet lost a NaNoWriMo, and 2024 would be my fifteenth year, but the more this situation progresses, the more details that come out, the more it looks as if NaNo2024 won't happen.
I need to just write for the fun of it, again, and learn to write without the contest.
I'm Co-ML in my region. On Tuesday, we are getting our region together in Discord, and going Rogue.

*whispers snidely with my eyebrows raised like Maggie Smith's in that one Downton Abbey gif*
Some somewhat popular author made a blog post that said any books over 140k needed editing and the authors thought they were Dickens or something???
See this is why I love authors who come out of fanfiction backgrounds. We are gonna wring every last drop of emotion out of the romance in our slow burn 140k stories, because that is the good shit right there. We are in it for the long haul ~experience~ sometimes and that's okay.
Is it too much? Maybe. Sometimes you want a short thing, sometimes you want the Agonies. It's like choosing to watch a regular romance or a romance miniseries. Like. You can have them all! Why be a snot about one or the other?
I know writers with blogs have to generate content and sometimes say stuff just to say stuff but like, you can just not read longer books, friend. You can just skip 'em.
Also I don't like Dickens particularly, but how do you know some of the writers out there aren't genre-changing future literary giants?? I mean, most aren't, but (newsflash, asshole. jpeg) most shorter story writers aren't either.

How To Scare Your Readers
tw: mentions of murder and other horror media, its not specific or gorey but I just wanted to mention it
Today is one my hardest asks as it is a highly individual process to freaking out your audience with @differentnighttale asking: "How do you write horror, and how do you write it good nail biting and very unsettling type of horror."
Specifically, we are focusing on supernatural horror and dark fantasy. Due to the fact that there are numerous ways of scaring an audience, I'm going to focus on more diverse and interesting ways to freak out the readers. There are obvious tricks like "focus on the tactile senses" and stuff like that but let's cover something not as cliche!
Again, there are many ways to instill horror.
One: Combine Beauty And The Macabre
While this is a common trick seen in visual horror such as the works of Junji Ito or Midsommar, it's also an important and useful element in other beloved horror media.
This can be useful for a myriad of reasons.
The ability to combine the fantastical beauty of the scenery with death or the lovingly detailed imagery of a victimized body might be just the thing to elevate the scenery and visuals.
It also works to surprise your readers. If you are reading horror, you expect the murder and terror to appear in dark hospitals and obviously disgusting places. But what if the horror was in a cherry blossom field? In the church? In the character's childhood bedroom during the sunset?
It follows the perversion of the familiar. Most people internalize certain environments are seperated from society which might assist you if you are going for that specific type of horror. BUT! If you have horror in the supermarket, in the coziest little cottage, in the beauty.
TWO: Focus On A Specific Brand Of Horror
This is especially important for horror that is based off of pop culture spooks such as ghosts, ghouls, witches, zombies, and werewolfs.
Doing some research into why these monsters have survived in the public mind and what exactly is frightening abou them can influence your settings, characters, and horror.
There is horror about isolation.
There is horror about losing yourself.
There is horror about the female body.
There is horror about puberty.
There is horror about gender dysphoria.
There is horror about everything.
Decide what is the core fear you are proding at.
THREE: Be Ambiguous
Readers are comforted by linear stories with a beginning, clearly laid out morality, and a clear cut ending which provides either a happy ending or a sad ending.
Messing up any one of these things can lead to your story haunting the minds of your audience for a long time.
Midsommar is constantly debated about over if the ending is happy or sad.
Joker(2019), a thriller but not a horror, is infamous for it's amazing usage of hallucination and delusion to tell a non-linear story with a confusing ending.
Leaving the ending, villain, characters, or plot ambiguous and not clearly detailed might elevate your horror :)
FOUR: Use Your Own Fears
When you write about what scares you, that natural fear tends to radiate into your writing more naturally :)
This fear can be a lot of things from the specific phobia of bugs to the fear of being mistreated by a loved one.
Conclusion:
I hope I gave you some interesting advice that you haven't heard before @differentnighttale
p.s: at what point does something become "Mature"? I did mention "murder" throughout my post somewhat frequently but I never went into specific detail so I can't tell if it's "Mature" or not?
If it is mature and I mislabeled it then I can edit it to be "Mature"

I need a parallel of the "because, Evan" scene where it's Buck saying "because, Edmundo" where he, in turn, reaffirms Eddie's worth both in general but also as an integral figure in Buck's life, and if in that scene they just happen to be playing Uno when a serious conversation crops up, and Buck just so happens to play an Uno reverse as he drives his point home?

what people think pro ship means: dangerous people who want to harm children in real life and/or think taboo subjects in real life are justified
what pro ship actually is about: the belief that people are allowed to enjoy fictional thing however they want, as long as it's fictional and no one in real life gets harmed or harassed in any way, and as long as they tag their trigger warnings properly.
most pro ship folks I've come across are just "hey, you like this fucked up thing that is fictional? okay, cool. you do you, man. I myself don't even like this thing that you like, but hey, it's not real. and I trust that you know the difference between fiction and reality, so you do you. if it ever gets too much for me, I will just block or mute you and move on with my life, but that doesn't mean I think you're a horrible person in real life because of the fictional thing you like, it just means I'd rather not see or engage with this thing that can make me uncomfortable. I still want you to have fun doing what you love, and I still think you're cool as fuck. love and respect, dude"
meanwhile most anti ship I've seen are like "omg you like this fictional thing where fictional children are harmed??! Red Flag Red Flag. put this gross piece of shit behind bars immediately!!!"
and I'm just ????? I don't normally engage in fandom wars, but I think, as long as you don't harass anyone in real life and as long as no one in real life is in danger or is harmed, how you enjoy fictional things is none of my business. and I'm not gonna make any "call out post" where I encourage my followers to harass you because you like fucked up fictional things that I personally don't like or believe is wrong either.
I mean, from personal experience, I was exposed against my will to thing I didn't want to see from anti's screenshot of fanart or fanfic where they encourage their followers to harass this person whose fanart or fanfic, that was screenshot and spread by them, was originally tagged properly with all the trigger warnings so that people who didn't want to see it wouldn't get exposed to it. until anti screenshot it and flaunted it around in the name of being morally superior while also, at the same time, advocated for the witch hunt against someone who just wanted to mind their own business. so... the irony. lol
fandoms used to be more peaceful before Fandom Police starts their witch hunting, but it's a good thing we can just block these people and keep on enjoying our blorbos however we want to enjoy them.
and I'll always encourage every artist to write whatever they want, draw whatever they want. don't let people who think they're "morally superior" tell you you can't make art this way or that way. my best advice would be to block and ignore and keep on creating what you want. they may be loud, but at the end of the day they're just noises and they're not worth your attention x

Growing up Vietnamese means that child me was forced to be ok that our origin myth is literally a dragon marrying a woman/fairy/goddess and then divorcing and splitting custody of their 100 kids (lol what)
What I'm trying to say is I've been brain rotting about dragon!Sylus for the past week and it's getting bad and I will only be ok once I write a dragon AU that has a lot of
Overprotective Sylus
Berserk Sylus that can only be calmed by MC
MATES FOR LIFE MORE SOULMATES SHIT
"I belong to you and you to me."
"I would let the world burn for you."
Egg laying 🙂
More dad Sylus because it makes me sob and yearn so badly pls send help
Even more grossly in love with you Sylus because I plan on contributing to this genre until I die 🫡
Really just lowkey need more Sylus worshipping MC like the goddess that she is type of content
"My queen" is going to make a comeback fr fr
I also lowkey want to write MC as a literal goddess and Sylus is just a lowly human who worships at her altar the altar is my hips but this something for another day maybe
"You've sealed your fate the moment you have harmed her."
Literally I just want berserk Sylus decimating the world for one woman is that too much to ask 🥺
Powerful man who rules over others and is feared and revered 🤝 the one woman who rules his heart and can bring him down to his knees
did I mention more soft Sylus It heals my soul in a godly way 🥹
idk if this seed will sprout into anything since I only have the ✨️vibe✨️ for it and not an actual plot lol 🫠 ok bye back to the other 38299272793 wips that I am a slave to

( a collection of fun and adventurous dialogue prompts. adjust phrasing as necessary.) feel free to make edits to better suit your muse, but please don’t edit or add on to the original post <𝟑 if you like, please consider supporting me through tips, it's highly appreciated.
"Want to try sneaking into the movie theater?"
"There's this exclusive sky bar on the top floor. I bet if we act confident enough, we could just walk right in. Ready to blend in with the high rollers?"
"You know the 'Staff Only' areas in aquariums always look so intriguing. I've got an idea involving lab coats and clipboards. Interested?"
"There's a secret passage in this art gallery that leads to a hidden exhibit. I overheard the curator talking about it. Shall we go exploring?"
"I've always wanted to see a movie from the theater's projection room. I've got a friend who works here – you get what I mean?"
"So, that exclusive restaurant is fully booked for months, but I may have 'borrowed' a couple of names from the reservation list. Feeling adventurous?"
"The old amusement park's been closed for years, but I know a way in. Imagine having all those rides to ourselves under the moonlight."
"I heard there's an underground speakeasy in this library. Apparently, you need to whisper a password to the librarian. Wanna try our luck?"
"Remember that fancy pool party we weren't invited to? I've got two waiter uniforms and a brilliant plan. You in?"
"There's a secret rooftop garden on top of that skyscraper. I bet we could talk our way past security if we pretend to be lost interns."
"I know this sounds crazy, but I found a hidden door behind the museum. Want to see where it leads after closing time?"
"The local TV station does live broadcasts from that studio. I bet with the right timing, we could sneak onto a set during a commercial break. Ready for your 15 seconds of fame?"
"I discovered a hidden hot spring in the woods just outside town. It's a bit of a hike, but imagine a midnight dip under the stars."
"There's a secret room in the library that's usually locked. I copied the key while volunteering. Want to see what forbidden books they're hiding?"
"Remember that fancy cooking class that was full? Well, I may have found a way for us to observe from the kitchen's back entrance. Hungry for some culinary espionage?"
"I know how to get onto the roof of the tallest building downtown. The view of the sunset from up there is incredible. Shall we?"
"There's a masquerade ball at the governor's mansion tonight. I've got two masks and a wild idea. Care to crash a high-society party?"
"My friend works at the zoo and says we could help feed the penguins after closing time. Interested in a secret animal encounter?"
"I heard this old theater is supposedly haunted. Want to sneak in after hours and do some ghost hunting?"
"There's a secret beach hidden behind those cliffs. The catch? We'll have to climb down a rope ladder to reach it. You up for it?"
"I found an old map of the city's underground tunnels. Fancy a subterranean adventure date?"

Honestly, I love it when characters relapse. When someone who’s gotten over their anger issues falls into a situation so out of their depth they fall back on their old habits. When someone who’s learned to open up becomes a recluse again in order to cope with something outside their control.
There’s just something so horrible, so toxic, about watching a character grow and then slip back into their old selves in order to cope, bc you know they still care, that they’re the same inside, but watching them hurt so hard they don’t know what else to do brings a sense of catharsis.
