I've found that a lot of the times, it's objects and small gestures in the grand scheme of a fic that continue to haunt me long after I've read them. There's a list of foraged things and mannerisms that I hear clang around in my head at odd hours of the day. The ease and off-handed nature of the action and objects strike a cord of tenderness every time. Makes me wanna scream tbh. So I thought I'd share it with you (as a rehashed fic rec list of sorts).
A plastic pink acetate comb
An errant spot of shaving cream by the wrong man's ear
Choosing to sit beside instead of across as a habit
"I like holding you."
A red germanium: pressed or fresh

hey hi how bout that directors cut commentary on the sources behind your liebgott fic. open ended q would love to hear literally anything abt your process. uhh eyes emoji
<3 <3 This is a completely delightful but also extremely dangerous message to receive; that fic occupied my whole mind for a while there and I have so (too!) many thoughts about it.
A lot of the research I did for this fic I did without knowing I was doing research for it; stuff that ended up in it came from a whole patchwork of sources. Books, fiction and non-! Documentaries! Museum exhibits! TV shows! Movies! My goal for the fic was for it to be as nearly structureless as possible, to capture something of the recursive, time-is-out-of-joint-ness of PTSD; this did not fully succeed but it did allow me to be almost modular in putting it together. I didn't structure it out at all until I was over halfway through the writing process; before that I was just writing section after section in a doc, and so I could incorporate ideas pretty much as I had them, without worrying about how a segment was going to fit into the overall structure. There was no structure! So if it fit the themes, it was allowed in.
The format itself was inspired by a few different things: in rough order of when they entered into the process, they were a) my memory of Slaughterhouse-Five (I didn't actually reread it until I was nearly finished writing, and it had been many years, so it was very much the memory rather than the thing itself.) (At first, semi-jokingly, the summary of the fic was going to be "Joe Liebgott has come unstuck in time." And I still might write that fic, tbh.) b) quigonejinn's Marvel fic, which I also have not reread in many years but had a huge impact on me and how I think about writing and structuring fiction (the dream segments throughout the fic are a complete homage) and c) reading Catch-22. The high of experiencing Heller's ability to control and corral the chaos of his timeline, while letting that chaos be integral and indeed inextricable to the story he's telling, is what launched me back into writing this fic when I had more or less fizzled out on it for a couple of months.
In terms of more concrete sources, of course you're well aware of the reverberating influence of Studs Terkel, both very directly and more nebulously. (I even followed him as a style guide! That's why "army" and "kraut" aren't capitalized.) The PBS documentary GI Jews I found fascinating and valuable in reinforcing some things I'd already been thinking about regarding Liebgott and introducing new facets to my thinking. The part about the USO workers handing out comic books and candybars to returning soldiers (and the soldiers' reactions to that) is something Michael C. C. Adams mentions in The Best War Ever; the section with Skinny's letter was inspired by Ambrose (loath as I am to give him credit for anything).
A lot of other stuff was, as I said above, pretty piecemeal. The scene where he punches the man at the drugstore is from The Best Years of Our Lives; the part about him reading comic books at the drugstore is from an oral history; I got part of my Kaddish transliteration from Angels in America; the part about transferring to a segregated train is from a story my grandma told me; I did a whole deep-dive figuring out where his family might live in San Francisco and discovered that in the early to mid-20th century the Jewish neighborhood and (one of) the Japanese neighborhood(s) were in fact right next to each other, which inspired a couple of lines. &c. &c.

❄️ if you’re still in the mood for the wip meme :)))
❄️Share a snippet from a WIP of your choosing.
Thank you so much for the ask; I’m always in the mood to share my writing, haha. It’s pretty rough and mostly just back-and-forth at the moment, but here’s a fun little bit from the upcoming chapter of heavy heart that doesn’t give too much away:
Boyd glares back. “How many times I got to tell you to answer your goddamn phone?”
“At least one more.”
Boyd rolls his eyes. “Well I do believe that’s self-evident.”
“How you even know about this, anyway? I thought we had it locked down pretty tight.”
“You know I listen to the police scanner.”
“You got to stop doin that. It’s, like, obsessive.”
“Well I can’t whistle more’n one note, so I gotta do somethin while I work. Though you callin me obsessive does bring to mind that old aphorism about pots and kettles.”
“I ain’t obsessive.”
“Ha. Don’t make me bring up your recent inquiries into the real estate sector.”

it’s a tired observation but seriously why is it that whenever you check the ao3 profile of a writer with a very good fic, it’s always men’s hockey rpf

Hobbit Culture and Customs Fic Recs
This list will include all ratings and tags, so read at your own discretion! :)
Lionheart - A Marriage Day in the Shire by Windholm - Rated G
Hobbiton was bustling with excitement, the entirety of the Shire was... Or Just a little fanfic about Frodo not following Gandalf, Bilbo and the last elves to Valinor, remaining instead to be with his one true love, and the very day their union is finally coronated...
Leaves of Years by StalwartNavigator (Fallwater023) - Rated G
"Frodo and Sam had wandered off a short while ago, and he could just make them out, sitting in a clearing that caught the last of the daylight. It looked like they were weaving flower crowns." Boromir is oblivious, Merry is panicked, Pip is also a bit oblivious bless him, and Frodo and Sam are done waiting.
Now See Here by onward_came_the_meteors - Rated G
"It's, ah… what, now?" Boromir asked. "Rock, paper, scissors. I know what you're thinking, but sometimes desperate times call for desperate--" "No, but… what, now?" Oh. This, he hadn't thought of. "Do they not have rock, paper, scissors in Gondor?" Frodo asked. Pippin and Merry also looked quizzically toward Boromir, who shifted his shield. "I suppose not, since I've never heard of that in my life." "You explain it then, Pip." ______________________ A mishap while traveling leaves the Fellowship with an unlikely solution. And no, Aragorn, no one cares what the game was called in Rivendell.
Tea's At Four by firesteel - Rated G
“Er, hello? Are these the Halls of Mahal?” Thousands of disbelieving eyes stuck to Bilbo as he stepped forward cautiously, already quite fed up with the rudeness of dwarves. Who puts an anvil there? Nobody answered. “I’m looking for dwarves. Thirteen of them-- not anyone, mind you, but thirteen very specific dwarves.”
From the crowd, thirteen voices start yelling at the same time.
Midwinter by determamfidd - Rated G
The different peoples of Middle-Earth have their own ways of farewelling the old year and greeting the new. Each race has its own rich customs and traditions to mark the winter solstice and the longest night of the year. Each is as distinct and unique as snow is to fire.
(But as the wise know, people are always people.)
A Confusing Hobbit Afterlife, as told by Frodo Baggins by Tamloid - Rated G
Frodo Baggins, like most hobbits, never really expected to have an afterlife. It was perfectly pleasant here in Yavanna’s Garden, he supposed, it’s just...where in the world was his Uncle Bilbo? And why was there a large mirror behind Bag End?
The Hobbit Way by ChisakiTenko - Rated T
Bilbo was known for being patient, but one thing he would sit on no longer was his dwarves and their lack of proper breaks! It was high time someone taught them how to do things the hobbit way - with lots of singing, dancing, eating, and a cute fauntling running about.
Slipper by Saentorine - Rated G
Pippin is caught stealing extra portions of the company's provisions, and Aragorn and Legolas connect over a particular way Elven fathers get their children's attention.
Petals to the Metal by Tamloid - Rated G
Dwalin, son of Fundin, was one of the mightiest warriors of his generation, but even he couldn’t hold out against such a relentless foe. It seemed that he would have to be the Daisy King.
The Statute of Finwë and Míriel by bunn - Rated G
Bilbo Baggins has left the Shire forever, and gone to live in Rivendell. He's beginning work on his Translations from the Elvish, and has started on translating an obscure text which puzzles him greatly. Elrond has some helpful ideas.
when i consider everything that grows by wrishwrosh - Rated T
Frodo was not precisely certain what a hobbit in love was supposed to do. He had taken to staring at the ceiling while thinking about Sam’s eyes, and frequently reliving in his mind’s eye every time he had ever made Sam laugh. In which Sam is Frodo’s first love, and Frodo has no earthly idea what to do about it.
Of Shields and Love by Porphyrios - Rated T
As the dwarves began to sort the hoard of precious items, they discovered that Smaug had brought things from some undiscovered hoard in the north when he took the mountain. Tensions rise as the elves seek to reclaim their lost treasures from Gondolin. Most interesting of all is a shield…
Fairy-tales, Cabbages & Potatoes by bunn - Rated G
"Many's the talk I had with [Bilbo] when I was a little lad" Sam Gamgee says, and then much later: "I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales...you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book." So here is young Sam Gamgee hearing far-off tales of Elves, Bilbo Baggins, trying to piece together the tale of the Silmarils for the first time, Frodo Baggins being a wild young mushroom-stealing tearaway who matures into an earnest scholar, and Merry Brandybuck and Sam Gamgee getting started on their great Conspiracy.

okay theories about tumblr user wrishwrosh, not sure how weird but these are my thoughts: you read by gaslamp or candlelight - you have multiple unsorted stacks of books that if you consolidated would be taller than you -- you have a secret guilty pleasure tv show that you think nobody would ever guess you watch
these are so on point. should i be worried that you’re living in my walls. i DO occasionally read by candlelight (bad for delicate eyes, good for vibes), i DO have bigass stacks of unsorted books (they used to be scattered all over my apartment but then i corralled them on an antique church pew i got on fb marketplace), i DO love dogshit heterosexual reality television (this is not a secret but i do think ppl are surprised by how often i bring up the bachelor in irl conversation)

4 7 AND 17!!!! -kai
HI KAI my beloved thank youuuu <3
4. Do you prefer writing multi-chapter or oneshot fanfictions?
oneshots full stop. okay well rolling stop. i love multi-chapters in theory but my god i hate the execution they take SO long to write and i have to keep so much straight and i have to pick CHAPTER TITLES and have you noticed how people are the worst about commenting on multichaps? if you post a oneshot people seem to be more likely to leave you a lovely comment with all their thoughts. post a multichapter and people won't comment 'til it's over or just leave a one-line comment like "can't wait til there's more!!" and it's like why did i even put in all this work if it was miserable to write and there's no joy in posting HUH. but also i do love when i have like one person i know is reading it and i have a reveal happening at some point or a crazy cliffhanger and i get to see their reaction to it. moth's reactions to the fey au were very fun back in the day. so yeah i'm a oneshot girlie but i keep writing ill-advised multi-chapters and telling myself "this time it will be different" (it is not different the best it gets is subreddits calling your fic "super underrated" which is not actually the compliment people think it is).
7. What’s a trope you love to write?
love to write a good college fic. found family, of course, is a big one. and hurt/comfort is my beloved.
17. Are there any writers and/or stories that you consider an influence?
writers (fic): @/rebelpeas, @/eirianerisdar, meri, laquearia, @/rarilight, @/blusandbirds, aknightley, YouAreInAComaWakeUp writers (other): maggie stiefvater, tamsyn muir, t kira madden, carmen maria machado, my sister, ann patchett, kristen arnett, edgar allen poe, lemony snicket, tolkien (obligatory), shel silverstein, probably wayne thomas batson unfortunately
stories (not book specific): the scorpio races, the secret life of bees, the twistrose key, the polar express (2004), fnaf, the oz books, home alone 2: lost in new york (1992), parallelograms by agrestenoir, pins and needles by mutterandmumble, national treasure (2004), the truman show (1998), the half of it (2020), frances ha (2012), the goose girl by shannon hale, the starcatchers series, the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe, the haunting of hill house (2018), mabel podcast, welcome to night vale podcast, alice isn't dead podcast, the odd life of timothy green (2012), moulin rouge! (2001), the spiderwick chronicles, over the garden wall (2014), the x-files, object 3921.0045.371, catalog entry by wrishwrosh, this one (well, one and a half) christmas musical production the church where i live put on (that i was in fun fact) that involved two characters reuniting after like 30 years that left an unbelievable impact on my 12 y/o brain, mlp:fim, and star trek....to name a few.
i feel like that explains both everything and nothing about my writing.

i’m laughing soooo much bc i do the exact same thing specifically for the war shows and the terror, which i’ve never watched bc i have like a low tolerance for peril…there’s a rlly good band of brothers lesbian WAC au fic by wrishwrosh i just read that i would recommend btw
this is so funny yes anon we r in solidarity...although i will say the terror really is an excellent television program, defo a lot of peril but it's worth it in my opinion. just an incredibly rich text even without the fandom stuff. every time i rewatch it i'm moved by the level of obvious care put into its production.
in all honesty i tried to watch an episode of band of brothers the other day but i got bored partway through 🫣 i think i just can't watch dramatic TV anymore...oh well!
and thank u 👀 wrishwrosh wrote one of my favoriteeeee ever samfrodo fics so i trust this rec...

I want to know about ALL of these omg. how do I choose??
okay okay what is what nix sees in bastogne: too much blood on dick's chest, trails of dysentery, and the thing, yellow eyes and all, that peers down their—his foxhole
why THANK YOU, JESSI for giving me room to talk about this worm in my brain. the germ of the idea came from several things: the ghost cart narrative in bastogne, @wrishwrosh posting visceral excerpts from "sheer misery," a novel called "dark matter" set in the 1930s about an arctic expedition gone wrong, and the description of a soundless trek to an OP in the ardennes. been really keen on writing horror for band of brothers with winnix at the center because i am me. excerpt is below the cut! though admittedly, the horror's yet to be written.
Without thinking, Nix reaches out just to see how much of his hand is swallowed by the white expanse. They were walking around blind, senses all but obliterated by the monotonous sludge of cold milk-damp cereal and pale beans, and the constant stench of dysentery. Snowfall continued, a foot deep now, smothering any sound. The light illuminated nothing else except pale corpses and still fresh blood. Five days in the Ardennes and Nix begins to rethink the existence of purgatory on a different plane. It was right here in Bastogne. [...] They hear it whistle up, a crack of light manages to break through the oppressive nothing of the sky, a tree explodes above them, and Dick shoves Nix into their foxhole. It’s almost comical how his arms jut back to reach for Dick but he’s hurtling down the six foot hole faster than he can grab. Nix’s shoulder thunks against the cold earth, his cheek next; the blood on his tongue tastes like rust and tooth powder. When Dick falls in beside him, he’s bent all wrong. Only the zip and bang of artillery shells and flak penetrate the silencing forest.

bc wrishwrosh asked for a directors cut, im gonna shoot my shot too hahah it was such an expansive look at joe’s historical context and i wonder, did you have any darlings you had to kill, i.e. any historical research/scenes you cut off/deleted to make the work what it was in the end? (i really cannot stop thinking about your work!)
First of all: thank you so much. That the response this fic has gotten has been so lovely and so passionate has really made my week/month/year. You all are deeply wonderful. <3 (Still & forever talking about this fic, for anyone following along at home.)
Because of the way the fic was (un)structured I really could include most things that I wanted to; in fact I started to fear that it would never feel finished, because I would always be coming up with new sections I wanted to add. But this didn't end up being true! Towards the end of the writing process I continued coming up with new ideas but started to realize each one would overbalance something, or didn't have a neat place to slot in to what was there already, or just wasn't thematically a great fit. Most of these ideas were for post-war scenes, which I already focus on more than I'd originally intended to in the fic, so I consoled myself by promising to write a separate post-war fic to contain them all. So most of the darlings I killed were more postponed or replanted than outright murdered.
The only fully written and realized scene that I cut was inspired by Webster mentioning in Parachute Infantry that most of their truck drivers were Black; I thought that was interesting in general but also in particular as a fact we never get an inkling of on the show, and I wanted to write something about it. But in the end it felt too eager to Make A Point, so I cut it. I do think I could've justified it thematically, and certainly I was not allergic to including sections to make a point (hopefully without scare capitals), but this just felt too shoehorned in.
(I will say, the darling that I came very close to jettisoning but did not was the YMCA bit; for reasons unrelated to writing Band of Brothers fic I have in my brain a store of somewhat esoteric knowledge about post-war gay San Francisco, and I was a little too excited to get to use some of it. There is a fine line, I feel, between interesting background detail and annoying I Did The Research detail; I do try (not always successfully!) not to cross it, and this felt like seriously toeing that line. But in the end I liked the bit too much for other reasons: I like gen fic where the characters are still gay (or bi, etc.) and it felt like an important beat, as a sort of outward manifestation of the ways that Liebgott feels like he's letting down his family and himself and the idea of himself he used to have. So it stayed!)
