Behind the Story – A Cautionary Tale
This book has been the hardest for me to get started and I’ve tried to figure out why for so long. And I realize unlike my other two books in my non-fiction triumvirate as I call it, ‘Breaking Radio Silence’ and ‘Stand or Fall’, this one has been the hardest to nail down. I mean, I knew ‘Breaking Radio Silence’ was going to be incredibly personal and emotional, and ‘Stand or Fall’ would be a…

And don't anyone say "well self publishing doesn't count" because John Ringo made a frigging career out of writing self-insert MCs with the serial numbers filed off
If u want to write a story about a character that's just you but hotter with a dark twisted backstory and magical powers and a pet falcon or something, I think u should just go ahead and do that. Who's gonna stop you? The government?? Fuck the police.

Okay someone with more creative talent than me pls use this bc what if
Okay so the idea is that God and Satan are lesbians and the entire world is their relationship. Like shit just happens bc they’re having a rough time and doesn’t realize that they are damaging the part of themselves that created us.Can someone pls make a book and switch between perspectives of random shit that happens on earth and the setting of god and satan just living their lives and navigating their relationship. And the reader will originally be like wtf is happening but things start to coincide and eventually blends together into the same story and the revelation that satan and god accidentally control us and how that ends the world. bc at the end the relationship ends up being toxic and they realize that it is genuinly better if they part ways. and then it gets sad but certain that it’s the best way and then earth dies and it ends. this could also imply that the reader is like a prophet from earth who is figuring this shit out. there are some basic plot points but someone MAKE THIS STORY. PLS. I would love to see this in action by someone with talent and a real brain.

things to think about with soulmate aus
- how long have soulmates been a thing? is it a new phenomenon or something that’s occurred since the dawn of time?
- if it’s the latter, how did people find their soulmates before communication and accessible long distance travel?
- how did soulmates affect marginalized communities? were interracial or queer couples allowed to persist?
- does a ‘soulmate’ refer to a romantic and/or sexual partner, a strong, potentially platonic bond, or something in between?
- how do soulmates tie into religion? is it a god given gift or something else entirely?
- is there a scientific explanation for soulmates? or is it a magical phenomenon?
- if it is magical, how does magic tie into the soulmate bond?
- how do soulmate bonds work for aromantic individuals?
of course, these are all just suggestions. but if you’re thinking of writing a longer story, it might be best to answer some of these questions personally, even if the reader is never necessarily given the answer.

Fiction is more interesting than any other form of literature, to those who really like to study people, is that in fiction the author can really tell the truth without humiliating himself.

How do I decide whether to begin a story in medias res or ab initio? I've been noticing a bit of a trend in contemporary fiction for the former, and the latter with literary, but I don't know if that's actually the case. Is the only real answer "write both, decide later"?
I think it really depends on the story, to be honest. In a story that’s more about the action and response, and less about how things got to that point, it’s probably okay to start in the middle of things and use other techniques to retroactively fill in the gaps. But if doing that would give the reader a limited understanding–and more importantly, a limited investment–in what’s happening, it’s probably better to start during an interesting point earlier in the story. In other words, think about where in the story you’d start if you start in the middle of things. How would you feel if you were the reader? If you feel like you’d be on board with it, go for it! If not, look for an earlier point. Always think about the needs of your story and the needs of your reader. :)

Tips For Naming Characters
Every character needs a name, but naming characters is so hard sometimes. You want to think of a unique name that’s perfect, but also not too hard to pronounce or read. It’s a long-long process. I’ve had so many character name changes between drafts, but just like in real life, names mean something, so your character should have the perfect name for their character. So, here are a few questions to ask yourself when you’re naming characters in your story.
What is the character’s race and/or ethnicity?
Race and ethnicity can have an important role in naming characters. Giving your Vietnamese character a traditionally Vietnamese name can be a good way to show your reader that the character is Vietnamese. Some writers also do this in fantasy settings where you can’t just say a character is Chinese or Nigerian. But, make sure you research ethnic names if you aren’t familiar with the ethnicity. Not all African names are the same. There are over 40 countries and 100s of different tribes and ethnic groups with different naming practices. Also, personally I wouldn’t just google Kenyan baby names or something. Google can give you some weird ass answers. Try and find a site that actual Kenyan or whatever ethnicity people you’re researching have contributed to. I also recommend fantasy name generator.com because they have so many different ethnic names that have already been researched!
Does this name have significant meaning?
I’m not big on giving my character’s names that are subtle foreshadowing to their character arc, but I think it’s really cool when author’s do that! You could also throw in a little bit of backstory by saying that the character’s parents named them something that means ‘strength’ or ‘wisdom.’ In a lot of culture, it’s traditional or normal to name your child with a trait that you would want them to have in the future like ‘honor’ or ‘truth’
Do any other characters have similar names?
It can be so confusing for your readers if you have three characters named Maria, Mary, and Maia. If they’re reading fast or even reading normally the names can look alike, and they can get confused on which character is which. Especially when you have a large cast of characters, giving them all distinct names can help give them a little more distinction in the eyes of the readers. The only time I would say it’s okay to have characters with really similar names is with siblings. A popular thing in books and in real life is for siblings to have names that start with the same letter or sound similar.
What era is this name most popular?
I’m not saying that the name Maud isn’t cute because I actually love that name a lot, and I have used it in a story, but it just isn’t a common name in the 21st century. Now in the 18th/19th century, there would probably be 10 Mauds in the same town, but you would have to research that. A good place to find popular names from certain eras at least in the Unites States is the Social Security Database for every decade. Also, I personally don’t really like seeing super modern names in fantasy stories unless every character has a modern name. But if your story is full of people named Zaleria, Geminara, and Tanila, and then you have a character named like Josie or something, that can pull the reader out of the world you’ve created unless you have a reason for that character having a modern name.
Elle’s Bonus Tip: Say it Out Loud:
I promise you’ll thank me later. Sometimes a name looks really good on paper and you can make it all the way to the third draft of your WIP before you realize that it doesn’t sound the best out loud and also doesn’t match the aesthetic of your WIP. That is definitely not based on a true story....Anyways, saying the names out loud will give you a feel for how the character would say the name or how their friends and family would say it. Also, if you want to manifest in the future for when your series is being turned into a hit TV show, how would it sound to the audience? If someone says the name really fast, is it unintelligible and do all the vowels run together? Just some food for thought!

what have you got to lose
Think of stakes in fiction like gambling. To win the jackpot, you gotta lay some money down. Knowing there’s a chance you could lose, how much is too much money to risk? How high does the jackpot have to be, to be worth it? And beyond that, what’s got to be on the table such that you can not walk away from the game?
Without stakes, stories fall apart. Characters’ hard choices drive plot to become narrative; without hard choices (stakes), the rest don’t hang. Characterization might be multi-faceted, even scene-stealing, but that’s not the same as compelling. No tension, except via contrived conflict. And worst of all, readers will probably wonder why they should even care.
Important: stakes are not the same thing as goals. Take characters who all want to win the Grand Prix -- that’s their goal. What each risks could be quite different: a relationship (”do this and I’m leaving you”), the family farm (”you took out a fourth mortgage?”), their reputation (”you’re just a has-been”).
In fact, if you have multiple characters with the same goal and two or more have the same stakes... those characters are basically sharing a single role between them. If wordcount’s your bane, cut it down to one. Otherwise, make the stakes high enough no one person can overcome them, or your reader might say, “well, it’s not like you need four people to buy the groceries, so what’s the big deal?”
A weak set of stakes doesn’t make success sweeter, it makes it empty ‘cause nothing was at risk, just as a weak villain doesn’t make the hero look good; it makes the hero look unchallenged. And yes, a villain should also have stakes. The only characters who don’t are walk-ons, plot devices, or the background chorus. Sure, those can also be charming, interesting, or scene-stealing. They’re just not compelling, because they’ve got nothing to lose.
A beloved stake in SFF is global destruction: big, but kinda abstract. Also, impersonal: someone else can do this, right? (This is why the ‘chosen one’ trope exists, to make that abstract external significantly personal, because no one else can do The Thing.)
Cue Chuck Wendig:
...the story’s stakes — meaning, what’s on the line for the characters or even the world — force choices from the story’s characters. Consequences are in play. Things are in flux. Risk is mounting. Goals must be formed. Choices must be made.
See, what we sometimes forget when writing (especially SFF, where mass destruction can be on the table) is that the biggest stakes aren’t based in scale. That’s not what moves people (and if it were, everyone single one of us would be working our goddamn hardest to reduce carbon starting yesterday because hello planetary destruction). Nope, sadly for climate change, the stakes that matter most to readers are the personal ones.
We have a ton of movies that regularly flop where the stakes are big, and characters scurry around trying to get a happy ending. But there’s no there, there, because, well, “I should stop terrorism because it’s bad” is... well, sure. No argument. And?
Take a story about, say, a spelling bee: it could be the most compelling, high-stakes story ever. All you gotta do is convince me that for this character, the outcome of the spelling bee will be massive. Winning means getting into an exclusive school, or reconciling with a partner, or restoring a family reputation, or even just finally making friends. Whatever. Compared to world destruction, these are small: but to the character, it needs to be huge.
Fguring out what’s table stakes (and whether your story’s even got ‘em) boils down to some variation on these basic questions:
If the protagonist walks away, what would change (externally)?
If the protagonist walks away, what will they lose (personally)?
What must the protagonist sacrifice for everything to turn out okay?
Working on part 2 now, but breaking it here so it’s neither fandom-specific nor story-specific, in case you find it useful.

any advice for wriiting? like i have alot of trouble writing these days even simple descriptions and stuff. like it's already tiring to write somethign like "it was blue" and like I want to change it to something better but it feels like alot of effort? idk if this makes any sense. its like I used to do paintings and now I can barely draw stick people without feeling out of the mood? but I do want to do it I'm just not really liking it??
yes! I hope you don't mind me cheating and giving you a link to a post I made about the very subject.
additionally, sometimes writing it out in a simple way first can help, or at least talking it out. do some other task and explain the description to your lunch, maybe. you can find new ways to describe things as you say them, rephrase as you go. you can, of course, just do this in the writing process. sometimes I'll stick something in brackets when I don't know what I actually want to put there or I want to fix it later.
I also advise writing crappy poetry. (or good poetry, if you're already practiced at it.) the way we describe things in poetry can be much more abstract and not all of it translates to a story, but a single poetic line can transform a whole paragraph. for instance, this is rather straightforward:
It was made primarily of limestone, brought down from the quarries not far to the north, and the nicer parts had muddy-hued bricks to change up the greys. Everything was stained with soot, from the factories, and from the ember-lamps that lit most of the streets. Though the smoke ran clear, its residue dried in flakes that stuck to any surface unless cleaned.
literally just a description of the city. but then I can have one like this:
He emerged into the square that wasn’t a square, and approached the pool of murky water at its center. An ancient fountain that hadn’t worked in years and had been painted all over with gang signatures loomed over him and Zan avoided looking at the figure’s eyes. They’d been painted too, a gleaming, silvery white that pierced through the darkness with an eerie glow.
again, straightforward to start, describing the setting around my character, but then I mention something specific, something that changes the atmosphere from city at night to dangerous city at night.
start small, work your way up. and yeah, it is work. but it doesn't have to be all work, or all at once. but like most things, it requires practice. hard to notice at the beginning, but your effort will be reward with ease and efficiency in the future.
I went for describing settings here, but I also did a post in characters as well, so here's that.
hope some of this helps you!

Do you have any advice in regards to writing??
Keep on writing! There’s no short cut to it - the more you write, the longer you write the better you get. I’ve been writing since 2009 and my writing styles then and now has completely changed. This is just me keeping on practising and writing but also as you age, so does your maturity and this has impact on your stories too like characterisation and plot that adds the complexity to the story.
Also read lots of novels/books - I even copy down some of my favourite phrases under my story whilst I’m writing to help me how should I put it, to keep that word flow going. There are days when I’m writing flawlessly then next day it’s like a five year old writing a novel.
Here’s a good wriiting tips that I’ve shared in the past and I still use:

hi I saw your ships were open and I would like to request one pls? ^.^ I'm charlie, im 5'4", have dark hair and eyes, and switch btwn contacts + glasses. I’m introverted, a little closed off to people i dont trust (which is a lot of people lol), sarcastic and somtimes i don't have great self-esteem. I love to read or write 24/7 and I play the violin. i hope to one day become a doctor or a medical writer (thank you so much in advance! i love all of your wriiting btw they make my day!)
pt 2 of anon: Anonymous said:(hi this is the previous anon who requested a ship and wants to be a doctor! i kind of got away with describing so i forgot to mention that i would liked to be shipped with a male from marvel pls thanks again sorry to spam! XD)
My ships are open! Thank you ahg I love ships. Okay okay soo...I’m honestly going to have to say...Peter Parker! My boi spidey.
also I barley have written much so knowing that it makEs your day makes me wheeze
Alright here’s why.
Peter is always putting his elbow on your head as a joke. he’s around 5′10 so it’s the perfect height.
Also loves to hug you from behind and put his arms around your waist.
Peter loves seeing your hair and playing with it. It reminds him of his spider webs it’s cool idk man
Okay....he loves your glasses. He finds they look so cute on you but he respects when you wear contacts. just kinda prefers the glasses. He wears them too???
“Babe where’d my glasses go?”
peter walks out with them on. end of story.
Peter isn’t the most out going person but he has his small group of friends. MJ and his bunch.
Introduces you to them and understands if you don’t want to stay for the whole time they hang out. Peter goes where ever you go.
The whole thing about trust is he takes is slow. goes at your pace and whenever you want.
THIS MAN IS ALL ABOUT SELF ESTEEM.
“Morning beautiful you look great never stop being you”
little messages in the morning about how good you look and like quick pecks on the forehead.
Alright this boi admires your work.
100% down to listen to you play all night.
You sometimes play for him when he’s stressed.
Learned his favorite song on that too..
Peter sometimes let’s you practice when he needs help?
Also let’s you talk to tony and stuff to get advice
I hope you loved this ahhh! Enjoy (: x

survey by -lastcall
has anyone ever told you they would never leave, and did? Yeah, I’ve definitely heard that before.
do you worry too often? Yup, about every small and big thing possible.
do you still speak with the person you fell hardest for? Not anymore. I don’t know if we still will; it’s very hard to picture her entirely out of my life considering how valuable I continue to find the friendship we shared and everything we went through. But she made a big decision, and the whole fallout is her choice; if she wishes to reconnect, she’s going to have to do it all by herself this time. I’m not expecting anything any time soon, but she is open to do so if she wants to.
when you get old, will you live in a nursing home? I’m personally open to it. Where I live, children traditionally take in their elderly parents into their homes when they’re no longer able to take care of themselves, but idk when it comes to my own future, I think I’ll be fine in one as long as the facilities are top-notch and the staff are caring.
do you wear any rings on a normal basis? I have not worn a ring in years.
do you like getting pictures taken, or are you the photographer? I like looking at photos and seeing people’s memories, lol. I’m a terrible photographer, and I’m awkward in front of the camera. That’s why I don’t have a lot of photos of myself in general.
who has seen you at your worst? Gabie.
what/who makes you laugh more than anything? These days it’s Cooper and watching 2 Days 1 Night. As for a person...can’t really think of anyone. Hans, maybe. Or Angela.
do you remember who you liked this time last year? Of course. One year isn’t too long a time.
what color is your alarm clock? I don’t have one; the alarm I use is built into my phone.
do you look older than your age? I look considerably younger and get ID’d all the time.
what color is your hair? have you ever colored it? It’s black, and no I’ve never had it dyed.
does your family put up christmas trees during the season? As in, during the holiday season? Yes we do, but only one tree lol.
what did you ask for, for christmas? I was a little modest in the gifts I asked for last year because 1) I was already earning my own money and didn’t see the point in asking for expensive gifts I could afford anyway, and 2) the pandemic. I just asked for Fruittella, a bag of my favorite bubblegum, a corkboard, and Post-Its.
what car do you drive/plan on driving? I currently have a Mitsubishi Mirage, but I would love to own a Mini.
when was the last time you were honestly surprised? Monday when I watched Edge win the Royal Rumble match. I’m totally not complaining; he got his career taken away from him a decade ago so I’m more than happy he’s been allowed to be in the ring again and pick up where he left off.
when it is your birthday, do you have parties? No. My last party was on my 7th birthday...I prefer having intimate celebrations with close friends.
do you remember what you were for halloween when you were 8? I probably went as a pirate or something similarly generic. Didn’t care too much for Halloween as a kid.
what should you be doing right now? I shouldn’t have this tab open because I should be at work, lmao.
do you consider yourself social, or total hermit crab? I can be both. Things like this aren’t black and white. I’m definitely craving social interactions these days, though.
where did you get the shirt you are wearing? I have no idea. I think my mom got it for me just cos she thought it looked nice.
is there a promise you would risk your life to keep? I don’t think so.
doesssssssss ittttt botherrrr youuuuuu whenn peopleee wriite likeee thisss? If done excessively, maybe. Every now and then, not really.
when was the last time you sneezed? Earlier when I brought Cooper to my room.
how long does it take for you to get ready in the morning? ‘Getting ready’ doesn’t really happen in the Covid era anymore...if anything, I usually wake up at around 6:30, and then I either fall back asleep or try to properly wake up until 8, which is when I have to get up to start work.
look to your right, what do you see? I can see Kimi on the floor, and my window.
will you save this survey to your profile? :) I always save my surveys on this blog; that is why I have this blog.
have you ever been in a hurricane? We call them typhoons over here, but yes; a lot of them too.
when was the last time you gave advice? Idk, it’s probably been a few weeks. These days I’m the one who’s been needing advice, but luckily my friends have been nothing but supportive.
do you tell other people what you honestly think about them? If it comes up, yeah. It rarely does though. Occasionally, my friends and I will also get to talking about our first impressions of one another, or reminisce about past disagreements within the group and what we actually thought of one another when the misunderstanding was taking place.
are you wearing socks? Nopes.
have you ever played dirty santa? No. I’m not sure what this is.
what do you do on christmas eve? do you visit family? We usually visit family, but who we visit differs per year. For 2020, we spent Christmas at my mom’s cousin and her family’s place.
do you catch yourself thinking about the past/present/future the most? These days, the present.
do you have annoying neighbors? I wouldn’t say so. The kids are very loud when they play outside and it can be distracting while I work, but they’re kids so it’s fine and it’s actually great they still play outside in the afternoon.
what was your high school mascot? We didn’t have one.
do you remember who you last slapped? Haven’t slapped anyone other than my brother, when he did the same to me first two years ago.
have you ever back talked your parents? Yeah, I mean I’m an adult with my own thoughts and opinions, so.
do you stand up for what you believe in? Yes.
does you dad still live with you? I live with him, not the other way around.
when is the last time you were actually frightened? Last December when I was walking Cooper and his leash suddenly snapped. 10-12 years ago, back when he was a baby, Kimi was impossible to chase around the neighborhood because he liked to run and he liked to run fast; so I got legit terrified that Cooper would be a pain in the ass to catch as well. To my relief, Cooper only pranced around the street and kept looking back at me as if he wanted me to notice how well-behaved he was, hahaha.
why was the reason you last bled? I had just scratched the skin on my knee too aggressively.
how many times do you blink a day? bahah, kidding. Good. Because I have no idea lmao.
do you wear makeup, everyday? Nope.
whats your name, anyways? Robyn.
