Twenty years ago today, I posted a tribute to Magnum TA on my old Wrestling Arsenal website. He was one of my favorite wrestlers, inspiring great excitement during my teen years. What a fuckin STUD, especially with his hairy chest! Here are a few of the best images from that old gallery, spiced up with my 20-year-old captions now included.

I saw on Twitter that Sycho Sid had passed away at the age of 63 reportedly after battling cancer for a few years. The shitty thing about getting older other than my ever expanding belly and rapidly thinning hairline is having to watch the people who you idolised as a child drop off one by one. I was a WCW kid and watching WCW back now is a somber experience because of how many of the larger than life figures I watched on TV ever week are no longer with us; Curt Hennig, Kanyon, Mike Awesome, Scott Hall, Randy Savage, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and now you can add Sid Vicious to that tragic list. Sid was most definitely an intimidating force who exuded intensity and despite his limited in ring arsenal he was clearly the kind of performer who needed to be at the top of the chain whenever he wrestled. I remember he very brief face turn in 1999 which looking back made zero sense to make the mentally unstable monster a fan favourite but I was really happy for him when he won the world title for the first time. I get the impression that he had quite an inflated sense of his importance in the grand scheme of professional wrestling. I remember hearing an interview with him from 2012 where he said that if he was to be signed by WWE he would be their biggest draw…in 2012, at the age of 51, when the rest of the roster was John Cena, CM Punk, Randy Orton etc and he thought he would draw more eyes to the product than all of them in their prime. I’m not saying he wasn’t over with the fans but to suggest that he was an all time big draw and that he could have still been twelve years ago is pushing it a bit. Either way it’s a sad loss when anyone in pro wrestling passes away (except for when Vince McMahon ends up shuffling off of course) and Sid seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I suspect that in the years to come I will remember his passing more than others because it’s happened to coincide with my holiday to Greece whereas I probably learned of most of the others by from wrestling news websites like I do every day. Major League Wrestling Signs Zeda Zhang

Major League Wrestling (“MLW”) today announced the signing of Zeda Zhang to a multi-year exclusive contract.

The talented female fighter will join MLW’s much-anticipated women’s division which is slated to launch this year.

Zhang recently competed in China where she honed her skills under the tutelage of CIMA.

Traveling around the world over the past year on a mission to learn new styles, Zhang has competed for promotions in Taiwan, Singapore, Shenzhen, Macau, India, South Korea, and Japan.

Zhang now returns to MLW where she competed in 2018 with her eyes set on becoming the inaugural champion.

“Zeda is an instant threat to all within the women’s division and I look forward to her matches for years to come here in MLW. Zeda is not only a great athlete but a great role model and person. I’m ecstatic to have her join MLW.”

At Least 17 Dead in Florida School Shooting

At least 17 people are dead after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, opened fire at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, a small town approximately an hour from Miami.

Cruz, described as a loner by a former classmate, had previously been expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons. Her brother, Jesse, managed to escape from the school unharmed but they couldn’t find Jaime. They were later given the traumatic news that she was among the dead.

Chris Hixon, the school’s athletic director and wrestling coach, is the third victim to be named. He was described as the kind of person “who would give you the shirt off his back.” The 49-year-old married father was a military veteran who served in Iraq in 2007.

Authorities said that Cruz was armed with an AR-15 rifle that was purchased legally. “No laws were violated in the procurement on this weapon,” said Peter J. Forcelli, the special agent in charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Miami. He is believed to have concealed himself amongst the fleeing students. In the hands of musicians from Jimmy Page to Duane Allman and Slash, Gibson’s electric guitars have been a foundational element of blues and rock.

Legendary jazz guitar player Charlie Christian made history playing a Gibson ES-150 — one of the first ever electric guitars — through an amplifier with the Benny Goodman orchestra. The later big-bodied Gibson jazz guitars have been in the arsenal of many great players since then, such as Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass.

“It’s hard to name any guitar players who play electric or steel-string acoustics who don’t own a Gibson,” said George Gruhn of Gruhn Guitars, a world-famous vintage instrument store in Nashville.

One of the only known photographs of iconic Delta blues pioneer Robert Johnson shows him with a Gibson L-1 guitar.

And the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s wouldn’t have sounded quite so mellow without battalions of steel-string Gibson acoustic guitars among the Martins and Guilds.

Elvis Presley didn’t start out with a Gibson but he went on to own and play many of them, according to the website for Graceland, his Memphis home.

And Jimmy Page, the legendary guitarist for blues rockers Led Zeppelin, was and remains a longtime Gibson loyalist. David Bowie favored the 1989 Gibson L4 when he fronted Tin Machine. Slash swears by them.

Gibson, founded in 1894 and based in Nashville, Tennessee, has the top market share in premium electric guitars. It sells more than 170,000 guitars a year in more than 80 countries, including more than 40 percent of all electric guitars that cost more than $2,000, according to a bankruptcy filing.

The pre-negotiated reorganization plan filed Tuesday will allow Gibson Brands Inc. to continue operations with $135 million in financing from lenders.

Gibson has already sold off some noncore brands, acquisitions that contributed to a burdensome debt load. Gibson has begun the liquidation process for its struggling international Gibson Innovations division, which sells headphones, speakers, accessories and other electronics.

“The decision to re-focus on our core business, musical instruments, combined with the significant support from our noteholders, we believe will assure the company’s long-term stability and financial health,” Henry Juszkiewicz, Gibson chairman and CEO, said in a news release.

Gruhn, an expert on guitars of all kinds, said the company’s bankruptcy was predictable after it expanded into the home electronics business. But he noted that doesn’t mean the Gibson brand will simply fade away.

“The brand name and company’s reputation for making guitars is tarnished, but not dead by any means, and it’s very much capable of being resuscitated,” Gruhn said.
