I follow the ao3 tag for a laff, but every once in a while, an absolute GEM pops up and makes it all worth it, and this made my entire month!! It's all about the hids and how Harry uses them to tease Louis and some self-discovery comes in along the way (as well as some amazingly described bras and other looks). LOVED IT

I tell you what, without fail, my very fave birthday presents for the last three years have been fic gifts from Phoenix and Blake. A few days later they celebrated Ezran’s birthday. The desserts flowed freely, in fact, there were no other meals, just dessert. The whole eating unwholesome foods in extreme portion sizes was no joke. Contributing to the overload of sweets made Rayla feel a bit… unethical? Enabling? Disgusted? Her own misgivings aside she knew Ezran would appreciate her idea for an Ultimate Deluxe Super Moonberry Surprise Cake, it would be the perfect gift… if she could pull it off.  

Rayla woke up early that morning and after some kissing and cuddling with her favorite human, she met with Barius. She explained her vision and the baker was a little distressed when he realized she didn’t have an actual recipe. But he was able to approximate what she described. Barius insisted that he should make the sponge. But figured she would be able to execute the filling and frosting easily enough. She figured it couldn’t be that hard so she followed instructions and got to work.

Most of Ezran’s day was spent with Zym, he’d flown to Katolis with an escort of three skywing dragon guards. He was only able to stay for 2 days so he and Ez were getting in as much quality time as possible. When Rayla left the kitchens to go find her family, she was shocked to see Ezran riding Zym. The dragon had grown considerably in the almost 3 years since he’d hatched and was bigger than a horse now, but Rayla still couldn’t believe what she was seeing. The two kings zipped around the castle towers and through the clouds, Ez whooping and Zym happily chirping. 

Rayla came up behind Callum and took his hand, he turned his attention from the sky to smile at her. She gazed up with him “Been quite a’while hasn’t it, since all this started. Funny how they’ve both grown up so much but still somehow managed to stay exactly the same. A couple o’goof balls.” 

Callum chuckled “Yeah, it’s true.” He smiled and brought her hand up to place a kiss on it. “The world has changed so much, but somethings, the people you love, they stay the same. Like how amazing you are for example.”  

As always his words warmed Rayla’s heart but when he leaned in to kiss her she wiped her head back up to the sky when she saw the aerial duo heading into a tower, grazing it and thankfully not smacking into it full force. “Oye!!! EZ!!! TOWER!!!!” Rayla screamed up at the teen.

“WE’RE OK!” He yelled down and waved, Zym nodded in agreement. 

“DON’T BREAK YOUR NECK! I WILL BE SO PISSED!” Callum screamed back. Some of the color drained from his face. “PAY BETTER ATTENTION!” He looked like he was ready to go all mage wings and bring his brother down himself.

Amaya also looked distressed. Frustrated she wasn’t able to scream after him she nudged Janai to make girlfriend do it for her. Even Bait had turned purple. 

“Teenagers are stupid” Rayla sighed. 

“Hey, we weren't... technically still aren’t” Callum defended. 

“Seriously? We’re just lucky our bullshit paid off” She laughed “I climbed the side of that” She pointed “wall. Thinkin’ I could kill a child in cold blood, almost fell to mah death about three times doin’ it. And you kept playin’ with lightnin’ even though you din’ know what you were doin’, nearly killed me I might add!” 

He chucked “But I didn’t kill you! So it’s fine.”

“Oh you’re right, that makes everythin’ fine. Wasn’t stupid at all.”  

He pouted at her sarcasm but then narrowed his eyes at her “Human Rayla”.

“Don’ go there! I was amazin’ at that! How about Elf Callum or WiNtEr LoDgE, nO wInTeR, nO hUmAnS?”

“Owch” he glared “you've made your point and we should definitely stop this there. I still want you to marry me and I worry this conversation won’t end well.” 

She laughed “Aww you’re less stupid now” she cood and he continued to glare back at her. But held her hand anyway. She squeezed it “Like I said, lucky. Our stupidity might save the world.” 

He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and they continued to nervously watch the air show, screaming every time the teens tried to do barrel rolls and loops. The March day was cooled by the breeze but warmed by the sun, winter was truly at its end and the group enjoyed welcoming the spring.

Soon it was 3rd dessert meal (second lunch?) and the group had it out in one of the courtyards as a picnic. This was the planned time for presents and so everyone had their wrapped packages or hidden gifts with them. Apparently, hand made was a theme. After all, what do you buy for a king? Amaya and Janai were the only ones who didn’t make their gift. It was a sunforged dagger. His aunt felt at 13, it was about time he had his own weapon. Ezran looked a little intimidated by it but thanked them nonetheless.  

Soren went second, his surprise was a shockingly not terrible ceramic statue of Ez and Zym hugging. The sculpture wasn’t good, but you could tell who the figures were supposed to be so Rayla felt that the dumb oaf had at least accomplished the goal. Ezran was a little confused but when he figured it out he seemed to really enjoy it. Bait was entirely unimpressed by it, and maybe a little jealous it wasn’t him made in clay. 

Callum was also miffed that Soren had made an art project, he muttered into her ear “art is my thing!” She laughed and rolled her eye’s at him. Her fiance’s gift was of extremely better quality, so if it was a competition he still won, but if cake counts as art Rayla thought this could be a very close race. Callum had done a detailed color pencil drawing and had it framed, it was a family portrait. Ezran sat in the front and Rayla and Callum stood behind him, each with a hand on his shoulder and Bait was in his lap of course. This art piece was much better received by the glowtoad than Soren’s. 

Ethari had made a simple bracelet of silver and purple braids. It was the kind of thing Rayla knew he could make easily and quickly with tools he probably borrowed. It was modest but as always the workmanship was impeccable. Ezran thought it was amazing. 

Finally, it was her turn, she rolled the huge cake around the corner on a tea cart. 

Ezran gasped. “Rayla it looks delicious! Give it, give it!” He reached out scrunching his fists. 

She laughed as she cut him a generous piece. The purple sponge and gooey red filling looked great! She felt a little smug as she handed Ez the slice. He took a huge bite and his face scrunched, he coughed a little. Rayla felt her face fall, why did he look like that, she wondered. Then Ezran smiled and kept nodding. “Wow Rayla, it’s so… thoughtful of you to make this, wow!” 

“Do you like it!?” she asked cautiously. 

“Mmmmhmmmm” he continued to nod. 

Everyone else cautiously sampled it, everyone started gagging. 

Soren hadn’t caught on to everyone's hesitancy and took a large bite, his response felt overly dramatic “Ugh blah” He spit it directly on the ground. “That’s terrible. hack hack. I think it’s poison! I’m too young to die!”     

Rayla looked hurt but then crossed her arms and scowled at her friend “Wow Soren you’re sure bein’ an arse about this. I go to all this trouble, and you can’t even be nice? It can’t be that bad.” Now she stupidly took a huge bite and was immediately filled with regret, “so salty! Egh, what did I? Water!?”. She realized Ethari had never even taken a bite of his piece, his lack of faith was added salt in the salty, salty wound. 

“Rayla, it’s ok. I really appreciate it!” Ezran tried to comfort her but she had already stormed away red faced and humiliated. 

Ezran found Rayla outside “That squirrel was right, you are in a tree!”.

She and her bruised ego were hiding. When she saw him she turned away “just leave me with mah shame!” 

He started climbing, it took him a minute but he made it up and nudged her so he could sit next to her. Luckily it was an old sturdy tree. “I meant it when I told you I appreciated the effort.” 

Rayla made a noise somewhere between a whine and a chuckle and tossed her head back “Thanks, but also I’m still sooooooo sorry”  

“Seriously Rayla.” He insisted. “But you know what my real favorite present is?” 

She still had her eyes up and her shoulders slumped “Hmmmm Soren’s statue was pretty good... very lifelike” her words were heavily laced with sarcasm. 

“You know? I do like it” he smiled “Soren put a lot of effort into it, same as you. Want to guess again?!”

She took a moment to think “Well I know it wasn’t the fire dagger, I’m pretty sure yer afraid of it.”

He laughed “yeah, you got me there. But really, my favorite gift, is’s you Rayla.”

This time she actually righted her posture and made eye contact. “Me? What do you mean, me?” She was honestly confused.

“Yeah, you. When you guys came and told me you're getting married, it was such a good surprise. My favorite thing out of all of this is knowing in a few months you’ll really be my sister.” she felt her prickly mood soften as he continued “In a way, I’ve already thought of you like that for a long time. But now, it’s real and official! Best birthday ever!” His sincerity, something she’s always loved about him, was acting as a salve on her wounded pride. 

“Oh, Ez” Rayla smiled, his sentiment was humbling and she exhaled some of her negativity “I feel the same way about you, I’m happy to have you as a brother too. Now come’ere.” She pulled him into a hug and they stayed together for a while kicking their tangling feet and talking. Catching up about all kinds of things. He told her weird stuff animals say sometimes and that he met their shadowpaws. Apparently they’re both very nice but don’t think they’re getting nearly enough fish. Rayla made a mental note. He also confided in her some of his worries. There had been rumors about underground meetings to talk about hating and not trusting elves. Now that ambassadors and scholars have started visiting Katolis, and now… her, not everyone is happy about it. Rayla thought about keeping the procession incident to herself but decided to fess up about it. He understood why she didn’t want to worry anyone but they both ended up going quiet for a bit to sit in their worry. It always broke Rayla’s heart to see these things on his shoulders, he was too young to carry so many burdens like this. So she broke the tension with a few jokes and they hugged before returning to the group for 5th dessert (dinner?). 

After a few more days in Katolis it was time for everyone to part ways. It was decided that the Wedding would be in 3 months, as they wanted at the Moon Nexus. With the mages disappearing suspiciously and Aaravos and Viren’s location unknown, they had to be careful about having politically important guests all in one place. The exact date and location would be kept private and invitations would be hand-delivered along with illusion medallions to the human rulers. Lujanna would be assisted in creating a burrier hiding the Nexu, similar to the one that protects the Silvergrove. 

The public announcements of the marriage would be made when things were settled. After that Rayla would be made an official Princess of Katolis. That scared her, absolutely boggled her mind. Never in her life had she thought things would turn out like this for her. The most terrifying part was the fact that until Ezran had his own heir, which at 13 was a long way off, Callum would be next in line for the throne, which would make her a queen. That thought was horrendous for a number of reasons. But for every negative or worry Rayla’s joy and excitement was tenfold. 

Ethari went home to the Silvergrove and Rayla and Callum left for Lux Auria with Amaya and Janai. Callum worked on his fire spells and she helped investigate the 3 Sunfire elf mages who had disappeared. She traveled alone a few times to the Silvergrove to visit Ethari, flying on a twin tail tooth tiger, courtesy of Janai, made the trips easy. The more things came together, the details, her vows, the dress, everything felt more and more real. Soon she’d be bound forever to her best friend, and it was the most spectacular thing she could imagine. She was counting down the days, they both were.

Wow you really went off the other day but at least it was worth it 😪 I normally look at the scenery when I’m on a road trip, but then I get bored of it and decide to sleep bc there’s nothing else to do. Pearls are so good. Like most places I go to don’t add anything to the pearls so it’s just bland squishy balls but the place I frequent adds I think honey to sweeten them. It gives the pearls life istg. It tastes so good 🤤 hollering is a funny word. For some reason I always associate it with yodelling which makes me laugh

Ksks you must be op if you can make a joke in the wall with a door slam. I can’t relate my arms are literally sticks and I have no strength in me. Chrome books are terrible in general. Hahah I think it’s me. I haven’t heard anyone say “go ham” except for the people who go to my school. I find it really funny tho so I try to incorporate it whenever I can LOL easily burnt? Can’t relate but apparently I easily tan. There’s this one diagonal stripe on my shoulder that separates pale me and tan me which ??? How did that happen and what was I wearing for that to happen??

It’s all fun and games until you go outside and see a mountain of snow waiting for you to be shovelled. But there are some good aspects to winter, like skating and skiing and all that fun stuff. Snow is so heavy?? Or maybe I’m just weak but after I finish shovelling I’m beat. Gardening is not my thing. There’s too many bugs involved flying around 🥴

Kind of? I always thought it was short for cappuccino but I could be wrong. They don’t taste like fraps tho, they’re sm better. I was always a frap hoe until I discovered lattes. My old elementary school was close to a Starbucks so whenever frappy hour was happening, my friends and I would go almost every day LOL

I heard that dunkin coffee is really good. Oof there’s so many things that the us have that Canada doesn’t. But apparently you guys don’t have ketchup chips?? How can one live without them? You know that’s what soulmates are, we’re stuck together forever and I don’t mind that. I’d never leave you 😌😌

YES OMG LATTES ARE SO EXPENSIVE. I pay around the same amount and my wallet cries every time. If you ever yeet yourself off a bridge I’d come visit u in hell and bring u iced coffee 💖 we really are soulmates wtf I get almond milk in my lattes as well!! I used to get normal milk and was like “I’m a bad bitch milk can’t hurt me” but that didn’t really work out. Sigh what we do for coffee 😔

Washing dishes is disgusting. I hate doing them but yk someone’s gotta do it and that someone is me 😤 I’m acc lazy when it comes to smoothies, I usually ask my mom to make them LMAO. Pancakes are pretty much made of flour if you think about it so technically when u eat one plain ur eating cooked flour,, how barbaric. Waffles are Built. Like. They have a 20 pack 😪😪

pearls are Dangerous, i once drank a smoothie and there were pearls in it and i couldn’t see them bc there were like. only 3 and they were Buried under the smoothie but i choked and almost died but i chewed one of them and it’s like. so weird. HOLLERING AND YODELING IM- i once went to some public yodeling class and left in 2 seconds bc it was a bunch of white boys dressed like the kid from walmart 😪

it’s not even strength i’m actually rly weak,, i always think the doors are closed but they’re not and so i like slam them open and the walls are thin so it’s just. a sad hole. terrible wifi,, my school has pretty good wifi tbh but we have like three connections, one for the chrome books only, one for the teachers & staff, and one for students and guests. like it works rly good but everyone has a VPN bc of stupid social media restrictions 😤 & ilyt 🥺 u would probably win in a fight tho LOL

go ham is so interesting. the first time i heard it i thought it meant go pig and i was so confused but ig,,, i live lathered in sun screen whenever i go somewhere with the sun. ppl are like “i smell sun screen” and im just there like 🙃 it’s me u got a problem u burnt chicken nugget ??? i wish i tanned easily, i have a tan friend and when i showed her when my legs got tan she was so confused. i thought i was tan tho? bc during marching band season my sock tan becomes So Bad i’m basically white. she said she was blinded when she saw me pull my sock down and i laughed so hard LOL & i hate those dumb random tan lines like. where u @ bro? where u come from??

snow is fun for like a day and then i get tired LOL i csn only handle wet socks and a red nose for so long 😔 i tried skiing one time and i did so bad that the instructor had to hold me down and walk with me down the slope. i fell so many times i think he hated me 😳 i’m also rly bad at skating? i went w my friends once and i held both of their hands and still managed to bring both of them down when i fell. a cute guy once helped me when i was struggling to walk so 🥴 not my brightest moment tbh,, trying to walk in skates while on ice. do u enjoy skiing/skating? also gardening is. gross. worms and dirt and the sun i’m not here for it.

Misc boring essentials i bought for myself: new phone charger cos broken, new trousers cos i spilt hair bleach on my only two pairs, new shoes cos my left shoe literally snapped in half down the middle like wtf even happened there, cheap pink hair dye from a discount store cos i wanna try different colours but in a thrifty way

Now for EXCITING CHRISTMAS PRESENT TIME!!!!

First off SO MANY pc and xbox 360 games from Every Charity Shop In Cardiff, St Mellons, Rumney and Llanrumney. My sis has been trying to find some games to play but was like 'dont worry about it i can just wait til the charity shop gets something good'. So i thought i'd get some stocking stuffers via all the charity shops on my side of town. By our powers combined we will blitz the entire vale of glamorgan's discount gaming scene!!! I found SO MANY good stuff for £1/£2/£3 like holy shit i love when charity shops dont know the proper price for shit XD

speaking of which i also found a WEBCAM for £2! If its that cheap it probanly isnt great but itd still be fun to play around with! :D and the same store also had an old vintage G1 My Little Pony coffee mug in excellent condition. Oh god the nostalgia! My support worker gave me a lift to llanrumney so i had to awkwardly explain why i had an armful of weird 80s mugs and big teary eyes!

Speaking of vintage, i found this new vintage toys and games shop in cardiff called Galactic Attic! The name hooked me in and then they actually DID have pokemon inside! As well as all sorts of stuff ranging from 40s to 90s, wow! There was even a lil pile of old 90s gaming magazines in the corner, covered up by a bunch of boxes. I'm glad i noticed them! I got the announcemt issues for pokemon diamond pearl and platinum in a weird old pokemon fan magazine that i loved as a kid. Im kinda sad that nowadays we just have one official magazine fpr each console and not the wild madness of amateaur journalists failing horribly to get news from japan. Shame they didnt have Beckett Pokemon cos that one was infamous fot drawing its own terrible interpretations of pokemon sprites to avoid copyright. And speaking of terrible, they even had bootleg pokemon!! I talked to the cashier and he was like "you know those are fake right" and i was like "yeah its so nostalgic thats why i want em" and he was like "lol yeah they actually sell pretty well so i'm not mad my supplier ripped me off". It was a pretty good and awesomely terrible fake at the same time? There was this exact replica of some japanese display stand for the product and then the actual pokeball toys looked perfect BUT the mini pokemon inside were.. Really not. I am so damn happy with the surprise inside my one, surprise inside has never been more accurate! I can't take a picture now cos my phone is charging but REGICHEETO. Just..just imagine that, and whatever you're imagining it is probably worse. I love it so fuckin much. Also less hilariously there were some bootleg mini pika plushies with actually (as far as i can tell) their own unique design? They have cute lil winter scarves and an art style that reminds me of the Magical Pokemon Adventure manga. A really cute and good bootleg that i would have loved to see as a real product! The only way you can even tell its a bootleg is because there's no marking on the tail. I dunno, maybe if i still have some brown fabric in the cupboard i could fix it? Or maybe its unique tail makes it even more special! I mean there's Cosplay Pikachu with its double tail marking so maybe this is her cousin Accessory Pikachu with no markings? He just likes wearing scarfs and hats and stuff. OMG HE'S THE POKEMON GO EVENT PIKACHU!!!!!!

Along the miscness of finding a few things for myself, i also found: cute lil pokemon pencilcase, kingdom hearts blind bag, cheap copy of Fruits Basket volume 1 cos the new remake is coming out soon and i wanna Get Hype! The KH blind bag was really weird cos i didnt know they now have an entirely different set as well as the keychains i bought before. Its kind of a shame the art style doesnt match cos vexen is only in the keychains, alas! But i do really love these ones! Theyre apparantly made by funko pop but dont have the art style AT ALL, they just look like really accurate versions of the characters in mini form. Its kinda like the 'distance animation' style in steven universe? (Incidentally they also do SU ones but they missed the opportunitu to actually use the distance style, lol) I got a Sora in his kh2 outfit and i'm decently happy with that, its not one i really wanted but its not a bad one either. But i think now i've tried the fun of surprise once i'll just buy the actual ones i want off ebay later. They have roxas in his organization outfit! With a happy smile!!!

Oh oh and then EVEN MORE XBOX GAMES OF THE WILD THRIFT STORE VOID! i managed to find the whole fable series, two assassins creeds, saints row, gta, some misc shooter games and racers that she wanted but i dont know much about, mass effect 2 and ff13. I think maybe one or two others cos i cant fully remember right now. Theyre all in separate bags strewn across the room and my shoulders feel like death so i'll sort through them later.

Aaaand i wrote up like 14 paragraphs more but tumblr didnt save my draft fpr some fuckin reason and now im way too tired to do it again

* had a huge horrible panic attack getting stuck in a skyscraper shopping centre clothes place full of screaming and every perfume smell and WHY DO I HAVE TO NAVIGATE THIS HELL MAZE TO FIND THE ESCALATOR and seriously i was my most primal animalistic self and i went full fight or flight on this bitch

* had a lovely time visiting Cool Shop Grandma and rambled the story of how i met her and how we became friends but hhh too tired to rewrite. But anyway today i gave her a christmas pikachu plush as thanks for everything and cos her shop is moving on to its next location soon. She got really teary and gave me a big hug! She's gonna be at a comic con in march so i hope i'm able to go to that and see her again.

* went on a wild goose chase looking for harry potter merchandise and eventually found a gold plated replica of the movie prop version of the time turner and HELL YES my sis will love it!

* rambled about several market stalls that were cool but i can make a separate post about that in the morning when i find their contact details to advertise them

* got a plushie delibird and decided to take selfies with it everywhere to try and fight my social anxiety somehow. We went to a neat lil restaurant and had cheesy fries and a coke float!

* asked for a refund on an item for the first time ever and im proud of myself

* went off on a mystery bus trip to buy a preowned 3ds and pokemon games from a lady in an online preowned stuff facebook group and it didnt go horribly and i am glad! She was really nice and i witnessed A Good And Smart Parenting Moment and man it healed my heart and i wish i'd been raised that way. Again i'll probably ramble about the details later when im less tired, it really touched my heart seriously! And now i have MANY GIFTS FOR SIS!

* in total i was out present shopping from 9am to 8pm and i clicked my shoulder out of its socket for a split second from.all the heavy bags. Now im in a lot of aches and i need a sleeps

Casey isn’t sure his mom or dad will be happy he’s sneaking out like this, but Nine isn’t exactly someone who lets people say ‘no’ to her anymore.

So out the window he goes, dropping onto the grass below his ground floor bedroom windowsill, and with a brief glance around himself, he ducks into the woods behind his house. His backpack, filled with snacks he’s not supposed to take so many of, bumps against him as he jogs.

The woods are cold tonight, fall on the way, and it makes goosebumps prickle over Casey’s skin. He could swear it feels like the trees are watching him.

Casey ignores that creepy thought- he’s too old to get scared by ghost stories- and keeps his steady pace to reach his destination.

Nine is exactly where she said she’d be, sitting with her knees curled up to her chest on top of an old stump. She’s not shivering in the brisk evening air like Casey is, probably on the account of her borrowed winter coat and thick yellow scarf; taken from the back of Casey’s family closet. Her freckled cheeks are reddened though, as well as the tip of her nose.

“Hey,” Casey says as he enters the small clearing, slowing his jog. It’s nearly pitch black out here, so he has to be careful where he steps. “I brought some good stuff. You hungry for chips?”

Nine nods, and holds out a demanding hand. Casey drops his bag on the ground and takes out the promised snack, putting it in her hand without delay. Nine wastes no time opening it and pulling out a handful to drop into her mouth.

Casey looks around at the trees while she eats, giving Nine a moment to get past her tunnel vision for food. But, his curiosity only lets him stay quiet for so long.

“So, uh,” He can’t find anything weird nearby, or see anything besides chips in Nine’s hands. “what’d you want to show me, exactly? You said it was gonna be metal.”

Nine licks her lips, nodding her head. “Very metal,” She says, in that kind of halting way she talks. Like she thinks hard about the words before saying them. She gives Casey a very serious look.

“Don’t be scared,” Nine says, and then whistles low and long.

Casey starts looking for a dog- maybe a cat? Do cats come when they’re whistled at?- but he doesn’t hear the sound of quick little animal steps approaching. He barely, barely hears something taking slow, careful steps towards them.

Casey whips towards the sound of a snapping twig, coming from behind Nine on the edge of the clearing. His mouth drops open.

A thing on four legs emerges from the shadows, something like a low growling trill coming from its chest. Casey can’t make out perfect detail in the dark- why didn’t he bring a flashlight? Or a bat?!- but he thinks he sees a tail and a shell, and luminescent red eyes.

“This one,” Nine says, holding out a chip to the thing as it comes to stand by her. “is named… Smart. Also Tall.”

The monster lives up to its second name, then; standing on its back legs and going from three feet high to nearly five. Casey gulps, staring at it as it stares at him. The rumbling clicking sound persists as it cocks its head, examining him.

Its lower jaw abruptly splits into three parts and a long tongue shoots out. Casey flinches backwards with an aborted yell.

Its long tongue snatches the chip from Nine’s hand, and slither back inside as Smart eats the snack with a small crunch. It then drops back onto the ground, sitting next to Nine and her stump. Nine pats its head and offers more of the chips, which it eats this time with its long clawed fingers.

Casey watches his weird psychic friend feed the monster like it’s a docile housecat for a solid few seconds, and then slowly stops eases out of his frozen fear.

“…dude,” Casey breathes. He grins. “That’s so metal!”

Nine gives a tiny smile in return, and her monster opens its mouth to display row after row of teeth. Five more chips disappear as it does.

Its tail is wagging, and Casey is about seventy percent sure it’s not eyeing him like a meal. So he decides he’s on board with this.

“Good.” Nine says firmly when he tells her that. “There’s more.”

And about then, Casey’s backpack is snatched off the ground and carried away by a galloping creature. Two more tackle it to get at the bag as well, and before Casey can react, his snack stash is strewn across the ground and being devoured. Nine actually giggles as they tear open the packets and bags, which just makes the situation all the more unsettling.

Casey rolls with it, anyway.

But he doesn’t even try to get the food back. He values his fingers more than he values twinkies.

Casey does, however, convince Nine to convince her monsters- named Brave, Stubborn, Smart, and Clever- to give back his bag, and also let him toss chips in the air to see how many they could catch without using their hands. The answer is all of them.

“Where’d they come from?” Casey asks, watching as two of the monsters go barreling around the clearing; still fighting over packets of food. The one he thinks is Clever has a sneaky mound of them to itself, while Brave and Stubborn are fighting over a single one. Smart is enjoying the comfort of being handed its share by Nine.

Nine crunches a few more chips, finishing her second bag with that. She wipes her mouth on her sleeve, and finally says, “The Other Side.”

“The other side of where?”

“No. The Other Side,” Nine says fervently, which still doesn’t clarify anything to Casey. He gives her a confused frown, and Nine glares at him for not understanding what she’s trying to explain.

She stands suddenly, dropping the chip bag on the ground and marching away. Casey belatedly calls after her, scrambling to keep up and not be left unsupervised with her monsters. They follow them as Nine walks into the trees, and Casey keeps close to his friend’s side as the two of them are surrounded by the pack.

Are they really, really fucking cool? Absolutely. Does Casey trust that they won’t take a chunk out of him when Nine isn’t looking? Also absolutely.

They arrive at a large tree a couple paces from the clearing, and Nine points at it, still glaring at Casey.

He dutifully looks at it. It’s a tree. Wow, shocker.

“Still not getting it,” He says, and Nine makes a disgusted noise.

“Watch,” She instructs, and raises both hands. A beat of nothing, and then the air shifts.

Something like ripping flesh and paper, and the trunk of the big tree splits down its length. Casey’s mouth falls open a second time that night as a fleshy, dripping tear is opened in what should be solid wood.

Nine lowers her hands, swiping at a drip of blood from her nose and breathing in quiet gasps. Her monsters creep over to the opening, and without prompt, disappear inside it with squelching noises as they rip through the white film over it.

Casey’s hand is seized, and without ceremony or pause, he’s dragged into the opening by Nine.

He falls through, shoved by a girl half his weight, and his eyes sting when he opens them again. He’s on his back and the sky above him is pitch black- not like a normal nighttime sky, though. There’s just nothing there. No stars, no moon. Just… void.

The world around him is grey, filthy, and Casey’s pretty sure he’s lying on something fleshy. What looks like ash drifts through the rank tasting air, but Casey feels no heat of a forest fire nor sees any lights of flame.

He slowly sits up, just as Nine comes through the opening with Smart at her side, and Casey stares around at the dark, wrong looking forest they’re in. Nine’s monsters circle them both, heads turning and unnerving eyes darting at the woods around them. Why, Casey isn’t sure he wants to find out.

“Oh,” He says faintly as Nine hauls him to his feet. “The Other Side.”

yes and no. I live in a small and extremely comfortable house with my wife. we have a few kids and a bunch of dogs and maybe a cat or two. I have plenty of time to spend on all my hobbies and a garden out front that I’m always struggling to remember to water. my job is creative and exciting and not horribly stressful. also we live on a farm and I get to pet goats all the time because this is a dream so I get to have whatever I want. I bake bread every single day and I never have to vacuum the carpets.

I wish I was better at articulating my thoughts in general. there’s a lot of little day-to-day thoughts I have that I’d love to tell people, but I’ve never been good at telling people what I’m thinking or why.

only one thing? hmm… I’m not sure there’s really anything I’d change. everything that’s happened to me is part of me now, and if I changed it… I’m not sure I’d recognize myself.

I’d make the books I loved as a kid stop being out of print.

The trials and tribulations of fieldwork: Honest answers to a few questions that I have been asked upon return…

This was my first long(ish) glaciology field campaign and apparently “one of the toughest” (Jon Hawkings, 2017). Now I am back, I have a real sense of achievement. I held a talk at the University of Aysen about my diving passions to a packed room with a translator, when only a few days before we were digging a trench to divert flood waters away from Jon’s already waterlogged tent. 

It was a jam packed month!

Most conversations prior to heading off to Steffen Glacier, Patagonia, Chile went like this: 

“Wow! You’re off to Patagonia on fieldwork – isn’t that basically just a months long holiday?”

“Well, errrr… no. We will be working, but I am still pretty excited.”

“It sounds like a holiday to me – a bit like backpacking! I look forward to hearing all about your sneaky month long break when you return… ”

Fieldwork is awesome. The opportunity to undertake scientific research in a remote area of Patagonia has been a fantastic experience that I am very grateful for. However, fieldwork is about as close to being on holiday as mud is to chocolate. When quickly glanced at from far away they could pass as the same, but upon closer inspection they are very, very different. 

One is sweet and tastes amazing, the other is wet, dirty and gritty, maybe a bit smelly but can potentially help grow amazing things once a seed is planted. 

Luckily, I like both chocolate (who doesn’t?!) and mud (for growing the plants in for my research). 

The PISCES winter field campaign was full of challenges; many of which could have posed a risk to the entire project. However, through Jon’s leadership skills and solid teamwork from Anne Kellerman (Our organic matter wizz collaborator from Florida State University), Nico (CIEP) and I, our time in camp proved a success.

Fieldwork is often portrayed as glamorous. Images of “scientists” marching around the wilderness like Bear Grylls, who then get to stay in a 5* hotel at night has become the norm. Unfortunately for us, there was no 5* hotel. Instead we had our trusty tipi, woodburner and a never ending supply of tinned food. Since returning I have been asked the same questions again and again – so I thought I would put my “honest responses” up so I stop feeling like such a parrot talking about the challenges we faced. Here we go…

1. DID YOU HAVE A NICE HOLIDAY?

As I left, friends and family were convinced I was off on an adventurous holiday. Conversations escalated so much that I even slightly started to believe this myself. However, the planning and packing is only the beginning – after the mission journey was complete and I had arrived it was time to set up camp. When camping in the middle of nowhere the work doesn’t end either. There is always something to do! Whether that is cooking, cleaning or digging a latrine – not “looking busy” is basically code for “needs a job”. 

The closest we got to a swimming pool were the epic floods that appeared after many days of rain – “Playa de Steffen”. We joked that the flood defense trenches we dug were the Steffen equivalent of the lazy log flume rapids. 

All the daily maintenance work has to happen alongside the science. We rarely washed, compared smelly socks, ate a lot of porridge and all worked really hard as a team. The phrase ‘fieldwork has ‘work’ on the end of it for a reason’ is pretty spot on! I had an awesome time, but it was certainly not a holiday.

2. HOW WAS THE WEATHER? DID IT RAIN?

We spent 18 days at Camp Steffen. The first 3 days we had a blizzard dumping over a foot of snow onto camp and night time temperatures down to -15 degC. Following that the temperatures remained around freezing and the rain did not stop. Patagonian rain is unlike any rain I have ever seen in my entire life! It was cold, wet and could potentially be miserable. Somehow I managed to draw pure joy from the horror of the relentless downpours.

The unpredictable weather made planning for long days outdoors difficult. Our tipi was graced by the presence of the life saving ‘Magnus Svensson’ – our wood burning stove. Thankyou Tentipi – we’d have been shivering drowned mice by the third day (at best) if it wasn’t for you. 

The wet weather is also a nightmare for anything electrical. It made sensor maintenance slightly more tricky. Opening datalogger boxes to download data became a little more precarious in the downpours, forcing Jon to sit underneath a (very smelly) poncho for protection. Many inventive Patagonia weatherproofing solutions were constructed from my two favourite things, duct tape and cable ties.

The other disadvantage to the constant rain meant that we really only took photos or film footage during the few rare moments when we were reminded what the sun actually is. I fear the sunny snaps will now fuel the “holiday not fieldwork” thinking. Fortunately they show just how beautiful Camp Steffen was - a great reminder of the stunning place that we were lucky enough to have as our office for a few weeks.

3. DID ANYTHING BREAK AND CAUSE A DISASTER? 

Annoyingly, anything can break and when in the field will inevitably happen at the most unhelpful moment. The most disastrous incident was one morning, we awoke to a foot of snow overnight which had caused our lab tent primary support pole to snap in half – the whole tent had collapsed! Burying our equipment and belongings underneath! However, Renee Junior, a local settler chopped a tree down and made the most perfect ‘rustic’ new central support.

I have been wondering recently how many research projects and the that have involved fieldwork would have failed without duct tape or cable ties. These two things can fix most problems – from constructing lighting solutions and drying racks to Patagonian weatherproofing. Thankyou to Vesta Stoudt (duct tape) and Maurus C. Logan (cable ties) for your great inventions.

4. DID YOU JUST END UP COOKING ALL THE TIME AS THE ONLY PHD STUDENT THERE?  

The combination of short days, difficult weather conditions, camping, a small team and lots to do meant that sometimes it felt like there weren’t enough hours in the day to fit in everything we needed to do (ed - there weren’t!). Good science only happens when the work ‘behind the scenes’ at camp runs smoothly. Our leader, Capitan Jon made some tough decisions splitting up the group and rotating us around between leaving camp to sample, conduct river transects or traces and staying in camp to get maintenance and filtering work done. Although it’s not as glamorous it’s still very important. After a day out in the almost freezing rain we could risk getting quite ill without hot meals and a warm stove upon return. Camp responsibilities were shared out and and Jon made sure nobody got cabin (or should I say tipi?) fever. Plus, we successfully managed to get all the samples we planned to achieve.

5. DID YOUR STUFF SMELL? 

There is something quite special about the journey home. There is something even more special about opening your bag of clothes and realizing that you really, really smelt. I have had to wash my clothes multiple times. Plus some beer we brought back in my one of my suitcases exploded so my clothes were… “ripe”.

6. WAS IT HARD WITHOUT FACEBOOK?

Being without internet or a phone for the time we were in the field was glorious – it’s nice to check in upon return but it can also be a bit of a killer to go back to reality where everyone is available at the end of fingertips. I categorically did not miss my phone / facebook / twitter / all the other stuff that I happily went without.

7. HOW DID YOU POOP?

We dug a big hole far away from water. Everyone knows, you just hope its quick in the pouring rain / freezing cold. Anne also kept us fully loaded on regular doses of prunes. Thanks Anne!

8. WAS IT TRICKY NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK SPANISH?

Yes, but it was more frustrating. Nico from CIEP who came into the field with us spoke no English, I speak no Spanish (although I now have a few words…). Anne had some words but Jon had gone away and learnt Spanish for the project. In just 6 months of classes and practice his Spanish was good enough to get us all by. Solid effort.

9. WOULD YOU GO BACK AGAIN?

100%. Wouldn’t you go back for three weeks to one of the most beautiful places on the planet whilst being paid despite the above challenges? 

Or maybe I’m just a bit bonkers…

As I mentioned before, I was giddy when I received this box in the mail because it was heavy. I was so excited to see what products they sent for me to play with! And let me tell you… I was NOT disappointed. I even called Matt into the room so he could see everything. As a side note, he is so good to me- he always acts super interested about all of this stuff. (He claims to be actually interested, which is even sweeter.) He is so supportive and wonderful. ANYWAY. This blog isn’t about him, but he was really excited for me when I was playing with all of these products!

Skinvolve Body Karate Cream ($40): This is one of my favorite discoveries from this box! The cream has a light rose scent, which I love. But who cares what it smells like if it doesn’t work, right? Well, of course it works! It’s enriched with Argan Oil, which helps keeps skin hydrated, which is obviously so important for me during the winter. Another ingredient in this lotion is caffeine, which is said to help stimulate and tone skin. I’m probably not going to use a lotion to physically firm and tone my skin but if that’s a happy side effect, I’m good with it. I really love using it before bed because of that soft rose scent. It just relaxes me and gets me ready for the next day.

Artist Couture Illuminati Diamond Glow Powder ($26.99): I had never heard of this product prior to receiving it in my box but then immediately afterwards, I saw it on several different YouTubers’ channels as a favorite highlight! And it’s seriously gorgeous. (Swatched below.) Loose powder pigments do kind of scare me a little bit because I feel like I just don’t have time for that- especially when I’m getting ready in my gym locker room. However, I saw Laura Lee (or maybe Stephanie Nicole?) use this highlighter on her face and then spray on a bit of MAC Fix+ and it just melted into the skin and looked so gorgeous. I have never tried MAC Fix+ but after a thousand YouTubers wore me down, I used some of my remaining Birchbox points and have some coming my way. I’m really excited to try this Diamond Glow powder with the MAC Fix+. I’m going to GLOW, y’all.

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer in Medium/Deep ($30): When I first looked at this product and showed it to Matt, I was like, “Oh, this is going to be way too dark for me, it’s Medium/Deep.” Then I opened it up and was like, “Oh. I can wear this… but this is NOT medium OR deep.” It’s a beautiful, light brown matte bronzer that I see myself reaching for when it comes to Spring/Summer. Hell, I’m likely going to reach for it prior to Spring just to warm up my face a little bit. I love this!

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water ($8.99): If you’ve read my blog for awhile, you know I’m not a super big fan of the micellar waters. I was at the Makeup Show Dallas a few years ago and a gal tried to sell me on micellar water (a different brand than this one) by drawing a line of eyeliner on my hand and then use the micellar water to remove it. But… the line sort of stayed on my hand. I was not sold. Haha. Since then, I’ve received several micellar waters from various brands and I’ve tried to use them to remove my makeup but I just don’t care for that method. HOWEVER. I absolutely LOVE micellar water for removing swatches while I’m blogging! So I’m definitely glad I have another bottle on-hand.

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Primer ($8.99) and L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Feline Mascara ($8.99): You know I am always down to try a new mascara but I’ve never really liked the white lash primers. BUT. I decided I would try it again to see if I might like it now. And the answer is… no. Since I got both of these L’Oreal products together, I thought I would layer the Lash Primer underneath the Voluminous Feline mascara and somehow, my lashes looked shorter and stubbier than when I’m not wearing mascara at all and the whole situation was basically just terrible. Because of this experience, I almost decided not to try the Voluminous Feline mascara on its own but on a Friday, I used it on a whim and WOW. I was SUPER impressed. That primer did the Voluminous Feline mascara a huge disservice because it is so amazing on its own!

Just check out my lashes in this picture. (Don’t mind the office lighting/cubicle pic.) Can you believe that mascara? I could not believe it. I kept on texting my friends this picture and telling them about this mascara because it is so bomb.

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment ($24): Ahhh, the gold standard of exfoliators, the ExfoliKate. Kate Somerville makes one of the OG best exfoliators. I remember back in the day, I used to use the St. Ives Apricot scrub and then read beauty editors tell me it was WAY too harsh and those big apricot seed chunks are basically tearing my skin. Those beauty editors ALWAYS said that we should instead be using an exfoliator like the ExfoliKate. It has tiny little granules that exfoliate to reveal bright, radiant-looking skin. And y’all- this stuff is “esspensive.” (Can you tell I’ve been watching a lot of KathleenLights?) The tube I received above is actually $24. That ain’t the full-size price. 2 ounces of this is actually $85. So if you ONLY bought this product, that is the price of this entire Beautycon box. What I’m saying is that you need the Beautycon box in your life.

Luxie Beauty Rose Gold Tapered Highlighting Brush 522 ($24): I love getting brushes in subscription boxes. You can really never have enough brushes, in my opinion. So when I saw this brush, I immediately started using it under Matt’s eyes because I just KNEW this would be perfect for an under-eye powder brush. It says it’s a highlighting brush but I have plenty of brushes I use for that, so I knew I’d be using it for powder.

Ignore the fact that my hair and makeup looks a little weird (I wasn’t feeling the best when I took this picture) but I wanted to show y’all how perfectly this fits under the eye area for dusting on powder.

Rimmel London The Only 1 Surprise Lipcolor in Call Me Crazy ($7.49): Now THIS is a red lipstick, y’all! This makes sense for a Winter box (hello, holidays and Valentine’s Day!), of course, I’m reviewing this box a bit later than that but I definitely think this is a perfect inclusion! The color is a true blue red and it’s just gorgeous. I haven’t worn this out in the real world yet but I have worn it around my house a little and I like it! I just get a little scared of super creamy dark lipstick shades because I’m afraid it’s just going to end up all over my face. I need to figure out an occasion to wear this out of the house!

ColourPop Lippie Stix in Beautycon (a Beautycon exclusive!) ($5): Y’all KNOW I love Colourpop. So I was thrilled to receive a special Beautycon exclusive color of their Lippie Stix in the Beautycon box! And it was in a caramel-y nude shade that I normally do not gravitate to, but I ended up really liking it. I’m actually wearing it in that picture above where I’m showing off my L’Oreal mascara. I mean, I know you probably couldn’t get past the excellence that was the mascara but I *am* wearing this on my lips!
