Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #1
Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #1 DC Comics 2019 Written by Matt Fraction Illustrated by Steve Lieber Coloured by Nathan Fairbairn Lettered by Clayton Cowles Jimmy Olsen must die! Wait, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Jimmy Olsen lives! Superman’s best friend and Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen tours the bizarre underbelly of the DC Universe in this new miniseries featuring death, destruction, giant turtles and more! It’s a centuries-spanning whirlwind of weird that starts in Metropolis and ends in Gotham City. And then we kill Jimmy. I wanted to read this mainly because much like Lois Lane Jimmy has had a long and storied history that spanned to the Legion of Super-Heroes as Elastic Lad. Once Superboy was written out of existence so too did Jimmy's past and he's had many different more “realistic” variations instead. So that this celebrates his bizarre history of having powers and being in these ridiculous situations I knew I had to check it out. I love Matt's work he's able to really take on the silliness that is Jimmy's history and make it modern while holding onto what made it so kitsch. Also the history of the Olsen's is on display here as well and I like that they have been here longer than anyone else really, especially the Luthor's. So to take the serious and add the slapstick of the original title really makes this super fun to read. True to form Matt takes us on journey through several different stories all tying themselves together in the large scheme of things and that's fantastic! The way that this is structured and how the story & plot development, the outlandish situations and character development are seamlessly woven throughout with this great pacing to really create a darn fine ebb & flow. Plus the transitions between adventures here is extremely well done and it feels like a continuous night time soap opera, ala Passions. Also I do like that we see Luthor, we know what he's done, and that he's not a focus here. Plus while there are so many different things that can be focused on it looks like Matt has decided for new interpretations and we see various classic moments sure but it's the originality that he's bringing which is what's truly fantastic. Steve's work on the interiors with Nathan is like a dream come true for this type of book. The linework here is utterly marvellous and how we see the varying weights utilised to created some wonderful attention to detail is a thing of pure joy. Plus the Turtle yeah that is abso-freakin-lutely the best wow moment. The creativity and imagination on display shows off both these gentleman's skill and talent. Because the colouring here is stupendous as it completes Steve's vision and makes the ridiculous more credible. Plus the way we see the colours, tones, shading or armpit hair is what really gives this that extra punch. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a sensational eye for storytelling. The way backgrounds are utilised and seem essential to how we see the story. This is so much better than I was thinking it would be. No offence to anyone but DC really has been hit or miss lately but I should have had the unwavering faith in Matt. So never again will question anything he's attached to I so solemnly swear. I have like Steve's work for a while now and to see him have this opportunity to really let loose and shine like this is amazing. Everything I see in this book has me excited for the rest of the run. This is the perfect homage or love letter to the first Superman's Pal and is as current, see now, as it can be. Over all ever aspect down to the lettering is bloody genius!

The End??????????????
So that was the first chapter of Star Power. And it is a space superhero comic. Wow, it has been a long time since I ready any Superhero Comics that remotely felt like Marvel or DC.
The setting has obviously a Star Trek vibe with aliens being super common place. Our leading lady Danica is just a science passionate introvert who really loves the stars. I do like how even in the mist of panicking, seeing her destroyed telescope is what pissed her off. We only saw one scene of her with it but we know just how valuable it was to her.
It is hard to judge the other characters because it just felt so short? Idk there was a lot of exposition going on in the first chapter, or at least at the very end where Mitch the Star Sential Orientation Orb, Arch Angel Glass Eye, and Countess of the 9th Dimension were giving very rapid sum ups over who they are, what their role is, and what they plan to do. Which makes it seem a bit...corny? Like ooooh Danica isn’t threatened by the 8th Dimension, but the 9th! Wow, something more dangerous than the thing that we never saw and was told was dangerous.
The Second chapter we get an actual plot going. I know there isn’t much time to establish a setting before going to the story, espeically when comics can be so short. But a plot didn’t really happen until the second chapter where we have Danica trying to learn about herself, be excited with her powers, and trying to avoid being assassinated.
It is also nice to see Brightson and the Security 6 Captain be more fleshed out. They are still the military/science trope but we get to see them being the faithful mentors trying to keep Danica’s secret on the down-low....while also being bribed with secret knowledge.
Mitch seems funny for being so obtuse, and funny for knowing more than he lets on but just dips with his orientation spiel to avoid the problem. . I do like how Danica interacted with her fellows for like that one page in chapter 1 before moving on. And the Angel guys were just pretty funny when they were freaking out. Body Language is super important to a story. Too bad they lost some of that humor when we saw their faces. Idk, being masked just made it funnier to me.
On my Fibonnaci Scale of 1 to 21: this gets a 5. It actually reminds me a lot of Girl Genius with this gandous feel of space and science mashed into one. And I ranked GG low before so my opinion could change in the future for Star Power. But as it stands, I’m not really interest in the throus of space. Like.....Space is a weird topic for me ok? People who read my Homestuck Blogs knows what I mean. So I have a preference to certain types of space stories, mainly on the anthology side of aliens meeting human culture. Anything else can vary from either bored or uncomfortable. Space Westerns are fine but that’s only if they really focus on the inside of the ship or on the western planet they were on before. It honestly is probably from the fact that Danica as Star Power can be In Space instead of a Ship and that’s what making me a bit weird on it......
ANYWAY! Outside of the space setting, it also felt like...really fast to me. There wasn’t a whole lot of time spent to learning what Danica’s normal life is like on the station before her room exploded and she got powers. And everyone gets an exposition monologue like I said before. It’s like following plot points on a tv show where the 1st chapter was the pilot and everything else are actual episodes. That isn’t necessarily bad, just felt a bit formulaic. Again, it reminds me of GG and I do like that vibe, but it will be a while before I possibly return to this.
