I love that Selena is a parallel to Katarina in that they're both very dumb ladies engaged to princes they don't realize are severely head over heels for them, and the dramatic irony is that Katarina never even gets close to making this connection -- but the glaring difference is that Selena so desperately loves prince Ian that she can be manipulated into kidnapping someone for him, while Katarina is simply vibin' so hard no amount of dark magic can touch her pristine heart.

The parallel works much better if we disregard romantic intentions!! Katarina loves her friends fiercely and intensely, and that includes Geordo! And she cannot let herself believe that her friends love her too, because she's too caught up on the thought that she's The Villainess, their nemesis, the one who ruins everyone's lives, the one forever doomed, to realize that she's more than a stupid girl who fails at everything!
