Welcome to November, with freezing nights and. . . . 22 C days? Yep. Weather is drunk. Usually, I'd be switching over to my winter coat and knitted woolies right now, but instead, I'm here in a tank top, deprived of the chance to wear my knitwear! It's a travesty!
So, while I may have planned the Celtic Hood pattern for the November KAL, now I'm sitting here, hoping it gets cold enough later I can actually -wear- said hood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
. . . . Anyway, yes, the Celtic Hood is the November Featured Pattern and Knit-Along.  Don't worry, if you don't have the pattern, it's 50% off through the month of November during the Knit-Along! (and yes, you can absolutely double dip with the @fastenoffyal, provided you can knit your hood quickly enough, as they start on November 22nd!)
Plus, if you finish a hood by the end of November, (don't worry, WIP's accepted!) you have the chance to win a Gift Card from Knit Picks. (US/Canada only at the moment, sorry!) or 4 patterns of your choice from my web shop!
Other cool stuff to know:
The cable stitch pattern is both charted and written.
The pattern has a large-print version for folks who need it (this version also works with screen-reading tech)
It comes in two sizes, adult small and large, with a depth of 9.75 (10.75) inches, 25(27.5) cm and a height of 12(14) inches, 30.5 (35.5) cm, not counting the ribbing.
It uses 11100 to 1500 yards (1006 to 1372 meters) of worsted or aran yarn (the cables eat a lot of yarn!)
The pattern description is non-gendered (because hoods do not have a gender, no clothing is gendered in English - and remember, linguistic gender is not the same thing as the social constructs of gender!)
Sample was knit in Cascade 220 Superwash Wool, in "Rose" but, any worsted-weight wool or wool blend should substitute quite well. Worsted/Aran weight acrylic yarn would also substitute nicely, if desired. (link above is an affiliate link, I get a commission if you make a purchase, don't worry, there's no additional cost to you!)
If you're a Patron, you can download the pattern here
Anyway, you can find all the details about how to enter the Knit Along on the Pattern Page, and if you've got any questions, please, drop them on this post or in the Ask Box!

crowdsourcing project ideas: 3 skeins for knitting edition
hello! do you knit? do you like to give solicited recommendations? do YOU know what wearable to make with ~600yds of worsted malabrigo rios wool yarn?? then boy is this the post for you!!
i was gifted yarn, and i'd like to make one (1) item to fit a tall-ish adult person out of it. i briefly trawled ravelry about it, but nothing there is hugely sparking joy, so i thought i'd turn to this other corner of the internet instead!
i was thinking something poncho-y, or perhaps a shawl that could become a poncho-y thing (or i guess a wrap?? i've never made a wrap). my problem, again, is that i'm tall, and that i ONLY have these three hanks of very pretty yarn, so the 600yd limit is real. i'm not feeling ~scarf~ or ~hat~ or any combination thereof: i want one BIG wearable thing out of this.
i am willing to try patterns with lace elements to maximize my size per yardage (size more important than warmth; i love layers), but i'm absolutely not a Lace Knitter™. willing to try anything once! intermediate skill level currently (i tag things as "my knitting" so you can see what that means lol).
does anybody have favorite patterns for this sort of thing? general ideas? hit me with them, please!!

tubular cast off in knitting is like “what if we made casting off super difficult, very easy to fuck up, use 1000 times as much yarn, and take forever?” and then it has the AUDACITY to look WORSE

switchback cowl
(This is cooler than I remember it being.)
Hey! I’m documenting some old samples for a massive online trunk sale, and there’s really nothing like retaking old photos to force you to see that a lot of things have really gotten better—I think my tech and my lighting have both improved. Since I’m linking to old patterns without having the time to update them, I’m putting some of the older ones on a 20% off sale through October 30th, 2024, and that runs about the same as a new pattern promo—no code required; if you’re not seeing this you might be surprised by the discount; the 20% comes off the listed price automatically.

I have a question for knitters/fiber craft people.
I have a wool yarn that I want to use to make a cardigan. It’s worsted weight and it’s label says to use between 4.5 mm - 5.5 mm needles. I have 5.0 mm needles so no problem there. The pattern I’m using, however, says to use 6.0 mm needles with worsted weight yarn.
So do I follow the pattern or the label the yarn comes with??

Welcome to January (and it's 2025 - it feels like only yesterday it was 2019!).  This month, since it's already been so grey and dull here, I really felt the need for something cozy and comforting, so, the knit-along and sale pattern for the month of January is the MacAskill Scarf!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don't worry, if you don't have the pattern, it's 50% off through the month of January during the Knit-Along!
Plus, if you finish a cowl by the end of January, (don't worry, WIP's accepted!) you have the chance to win a Gift Card from KnitPicks (US/Canada only at the moment, sorry!) or 4 patterns of your choice from my web shop!
Other cool stuff to know:
The stitch pattern is both charted and written.
The pattern has a large-print version for folks who need it (this version also works with screen-reading tech)
It comes in one size, but you can easily make it longer or shorter if you want (the fringe is also optional, if fringe isn't your thing!)
Exact sizing: 3.5 inches (34.5 cm) by 55 inches (139.5 cm), not counting the fringe. It can easily be made longer or shorter as desired.
It uses 548 yards (501 metres) of heavy worsted or aran-weight yarn.
The pattern description is non-gendered, because scarves don't have a gender, and it doesn't matter what gender you are, too - anyone can knit (and wear!) a scarf if they want one!
Sample was knit in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash Bulky in "Fjord Heather" (link above is an affiliate link, I get a commission if you make a purchase, don't worry, there's no additional cost to you!)
If you're a Patron, you can download the pattern here
Anyway, you can find all the details about how to enter the Knit Along on the Pattern Page, and if you've got any questions, please, drop them on this post or in the Ask Box!
Good Luck, and Happy Knitting!

my OTHER toxic knitting trait is ignoring gauge entirely for plushies and being pleasantly surprised by the creacher's final size when it's done

Hey does anyone else with one or more forms of dysautonomia* have a thing where if they have a moderate-to-severe physical stressor (like a severe allergic reaction, getting a vaccine, stuff like that), they get a new bonus dysautonomia for a few days to a few weeks? I thought it was a side effect of allergic reactions for me**, but this vaccine I had pretty much zero allergy symptoms but am having new issues, so I think it might be more general. A few times, I've had increased issues with low blood sugar for usually only a few days, but sometimes as much as a month or two after a severe allergic reaction. Once, I had waaaaay over-sensitive adrenaline reactions for a while (bad enough that I watched an episode of gamechanger and had to stop because I got too tense and my heartrate shot up). A few times, including this time, my thermoregulation seems to be very off. Like, it's not great in general, but now I am sweating so easily which is not normal for me (and not good with my salt issues) *my diagnoses that fall under that umbrella, more or less, include but are not limited to: salt wasting syndrome, POTS, possibly MCAS, tachycardia (separate from the POTS), and "something is weird about your endocrine system, maybe Addison's?" **I did bring this up with my allergist! He said "Allergies don't do that". I said "If it's not allergy related, then why does benadryl help?". He stared at me for a while, then said "I don't know. Allergies shouldn't do that"
