Sultry Savannah

Sultry Savannah
When I think of charming Southern cities, Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C., immediately come to mind. Despite growing up in nearby Kentucky, I'd never been to either city until last year, when David and I stopped over in Savannah for a few nights during our cross-country trek home from New England. We wanted to enjoy our six-week vacation until the last possible minute, and Savannah seemed a natural choice as we meandered South on Interstate 95.
Tumblr media
Dinner at the historic The Olde Pink House restaurant and tavern was an interesting look back at southern hospitality and good down home food. We put our Good Sam Club membership to good use and stayed at Camp Lake Jasper RV Park in nearby Hardeeville, S.C., just across the Georgia state line from Savannah. It was a short drive into the city from the campground, and we left our bicycles behind with the RV, having read about how compact and walkable the city is. Sure enough, we managed to see and do everything we wanted from the driver's seat and on foot. After a quick drive to get the lay of the land we discovered two things: the park-like, city squares can be enjoyed up close or from the driver's seat, while the more touristy river district along the Savannah River requires hands-on attention. Towering Oak Trees Dripping in Spanish Moss All in all, I was surprised by how fun and fascinating the city is, steeped in history as rich as the gorgeous live oak trees that envelop it. We parked on the street and strolled leisurely among the quaint city squares, each of which is adorned with mammoth live oak trees dripping in Spanish moss. We marveled at the striking beauty around us, at the two-story, pastel-colored houses that line the main streets. After taking in the town center's charm and stopping for some coffee nearby, we got back in the car and headed to the riverfront district, much livelier and more touristy and with a vibe of its own. The iconic oak trees were everywhere, towering over the city for hundreds of years as a beautiful testament to the rich history here.

Wormsloe plantation is a few miles outside of Savannah with its long driveway shrouded in hundreds of overhanging oak trees. We circled around the somewhat-confusing riverfront district in search of a parking spot, noticing how the cobblestone streets and walkways descend in rapid fashion from river to street level. In late June it was very hot here, so we stopped at a local bar for a cold beer while we people-watched and searched online for a good dinner spot. Where to eat in Savannah Hands-down, fellow travelers said we must visit The Olde Pink House, a quintessential favorite for Southern cuisine that's housed within an 18th-Century mansion near the river. In fact, the mansion is one of the few buildings that survived the Great Fire of 1796, which destroyed 229 buildings in Savannah. We made reservations online and waited excitedly for our 6:30 p.m. dinner time to arrive. Just walking into the two-story mansion was a treat. We were greeted by wooden floors, a curving staircase, old paintings and shimmering, vintage chandeliers. We were instantly transported into colonial America, and the servers greeted us with the formal language used in the 18th Century. We got a romantic table upstairs near a window and enjoyed warm bread and butter as we perused the extensive low country menu. I opted for the crispy flounder with apricot shallot sauce, grits and collard greens, and David went for his favorite -- fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. Although the prices were not cheap -- $35 for mine and $27 for David's -- the meals were delicious and the service impeccable, making for an incredible value overall.

Waiting for our dinner at the The Olde Pink House in downtown Savannah. After stuffing ourselves and savoring our food a while, we decided to stroll down to the basement to see the tavern and dining area there. It was an amazing change in atmosphere, and we almost wished we'd requested a basement table given it warmth and coziness. We could only imagine the historic moments that had transpired down in this dimly lit basement, a rustic fireplace serving as a centerpiece to the romantic space. Wormsloe plantation: History and Fun We walked back toward the river district and meandered along the scenic riverfront a bit, enjoying the famous Waving Girl statue and others as we headed to the car. The next day we stopped at Wormsloe plantation, founded in 1702 and containing the oldest standing structure in Savannah.
Tumblr media
The long entrance road to Wormsloe plantation, covered in a canopy of oak trees. A breathtaking canopy of live oaks and moss greets you at the entrance, and costumed interpreters greeted us at some buildings, explaining life in the 1733 plantation and the founding of Savannah, Georgia's first colony. The state acquired most of the plantation in 1973 and turned it into a state historic site. Savannah left a lasting impression on us, even after a brief visit. I'm sure we'll find more to love on our next trip.

Wetlands at Wormsloe, the colonial estate of Noble Jones (1702-1775). Located on the Isle of Hope in Savannah, Georgia, the plantation and its lands (minus a portion still retained by the family) has been a state historic site since the early 1970s. #wormsloeplantation #wormsloe #savannah #savannahgeorgia #georgiacoast #coastalgeorgia #georgiahistory #colonialamerica #plantation #wetlands #marsh (at Wormsloe Historic Site)

•••▪︎ Tree Tunnel▪︎••• Another Georgia favourite of mine. The Wormsloe Plantation was high on my list of locations to visit when I was down there for a long weekend. What I didnt know though was that the long weekend I had picked was a National Holiday and a lot of places where shut as a result. Initially I thought I might have to pull up at the gates and take a photo through them, but then I noticed a small sign at the hut next gate the gate to say that they will be open for a few short hours the next morning. Phew!! It also meant I was able to visit on a very quiet day, allowing me to take loads of photos of this road leading up to the house without any cars driving along it :) Win! (photo taken in January 2018) If you like my images and feel you're able to support a small business, please check out the shop via my profile.
