The autism representation in Splatoon needs to be studied and celebrated because oh my god it's actually really damn good and some of the best in media, especially compared to how its usually portrayed in popular media....
As someone who is on the spectrum and has been diagnosed, it's really comforting to know that one of my favorite game series has such positive depictions of autism and isn't just stereotypical depictions we commonly see in media.
Autism in most media is either portrayed as white nerdy dudes who are cold robots that have super intelligence, can understand alien languages and see the world like they are a fucking Lego master builder or some shit and see blueprints in the sky like in The Good Doctor or The Big Bang Theory with Sheldon. Or it's portrayed as people who are incredibly disabled, cannot communicate and have constant tantrums as seen with the dogshit movie Music (2021). Literally the depiction of autism in that movie is actually fucking dangerous as it shows a person pushing an autistic person who is having a meltdown onto the ground and RESTRICTING THEM! WHICH IS VERY VERY VERY BAD! DO NOT DO THIS!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!! AUTISTIC PEOPLE HAVE DIED BECAUSE OF THIS!!!!!!!!
Now I'm not saying that these types of autistic people don't exist, remember, it's a spectrum so there's a ton of variety in people who have autism, some people have really high intelligence, some have low social skills and need help, some can talk for hours and hours to anyone, some need serious help to function day to day living and thats perfectly fine. however the type i listed of the super cold robotic genuis is just the really popular stereotype which impacts the perception of autistic people just trying to live and enjoy life like everyone else. Some autistic people are just in the middle and aren't on any of the extremes. There are tons of people who fall into the "low needs" and "high needs" sides of autism of course, however there isn't exactly a ton of representation for people in the middle and sometimes those popular representations of autism can damage the entire perception of the spectrum. And there still isn't a lot of fair representation of "high needs" autistic people in media and that needs to change as well.
Thankfully Splatoon doesn't go for any damaging stereotypes but instead goes for something a little more positive. I think the best examples of this are Marina, Marie and Harmony. While they haven't been canonically confirmed as being on the autism spectrum, they are heavily hinted that they are and show some evidence that supports it.
Harmony for instance is just.... a regular autistic girl, she isn't some incredibly smart girl, no, she's just a regular girl who speaks in a blunt and neutral way but that's about it. As someone who is autistic i can relate somewhat to how she speaks, in real life i tend to just say a few words when talking to someone and i don't really sound energetic or loud about it. i just go "Hey. Hi. Alright. Okay. Oh ok. Uh. I'm good." Some autistic people normally do not speak like they are the nerd emoji and sound hyper smart like Sheldon from Big Bang Theory, and they are not able to speak entirely. That's not what ALL autistic people sound like. There's a decent chunk of them that just speak regularly or speak a little quietly and thats okay. Harmony captures the speech of what a fair portion of autistic people talk like, but not every single autistic person of course. There is a large chunk of autistic people who need support when it comes to communication, and that's perfectly okay. They are just valid as human beings as the ones who can speak.
She also has an interest in music as she is the singer of Chirpy Chips and is seen stimming and fidgeting with an Ultra Hand. Autistic people usually fidget and stim to calm themselves down and keep their emotions in check, maybe Harmony plays with the Ultra Hand because it helps her stay calm when running Hotlantis.
Now it's time to talk about the most popular example of autistic representation in Splatoon. Marina.
She is quite shy when you zoom in on her in Splatoon 2 when you play as an Inkling, but is known to ramble about machinery and excavators to Pearl and Acht for hours at a time. Technology and machinery seem to be a special interest for her as shown with her creating the Shifty Stations for Splatfests, having hacking abilities and building the Memverse. She gets so much energy and excitement from working on the Memverse as shown by her dialogue in the Dev Diaries. However she is not a flawless super genius like in most depictions of autistic characters, she is known to have uncontrollable emotional outbursts, when Pearl even suggests the idea of Off the Hook breaking up she becomes extremely devastated and thinks of the worst case scenario in her dialogue from the Chaos vs Order Splatfest. She sometimes can't control her anger and snaps at Pearl after losing multiple times in a row in Splatfests.
She also has issues with proper work life balance as she overworks herself with working on the Memverse alongside going on a world tour with Pearl, she vents abouts this in her 10th Dev Diary in Side Order. And speaking of order, she chose team order because she wanted to maintain the balance in her life that she has found. A lot of autistic people have strict routines and any changes to that routine will cause them to get really distressed. If someone comes into my space and says "hey we're going out in 10 minutes." I'm gonna get pissed off and be in a terrible mood as my routine has been disrupted and i wanna do something else. Routines give autistic people a lot of comfort and predictability.
Marina's deepest flaw she kept hidden was the desire of a perfect world of order where nothing can change because she's so scared of her new life being destroyed, but she learns to overcome this fear of change with the help of Pearl by the end of Side Order which may inspire autistic people to learn to be more okay with change, even if its very hard.
Marina is also seen wearing her headphones quite often and rarely takes them off which may indicate she might have sensory issues. Some autistic people may suffer with sensory issues and need to wear headphones or certain pieces of clothing to stay calm and keep their emotions from becoming too much. I tend to wear headphones often because i hate my ears being exposed and I'm very sensitive to certain noises.
She also may have another special interest which may be the Squid Sisters as she litters her laptop and keytar with Squid Sister stickers. Marina also talks in a very excited tone when you get Marie's and Callie's palettes in Side Order. She also acts very giddy and excited during live performances with them and starts stimming which is shown by her moving around in place and clamping her hands together.
Another character who you might not think is autistic right away but shows signs of it is Marie. And to be honest i find her to be very relatable.
Marie is known to be more quiet than her cousin and she acted like this since she was a child. Marie also seems to struggle with social situations and struggles to talk with Agent 4 and Neo Agent 3 and wishes they can just leave her alone when you keep talking to her. However she seems to be a lot more comfortable talking with people she trusts and loves like her cousin Callie. She also makes quite snarky and sometimes rude comments but that doesn't mean she's a rude person, she just likes being cheeky and truly cares about the people around her. She even self loathes and worries about her cousin to an unhealthy degree.
A lot of people tend to say that autistic people have low empathy when in reality some autistic people are far from the case. Some autistic people might be TOO empathetic but they cannot show it because it's just so much for them that they can't properly express it. Marie may appear as rude and non caring but she's genuinely a very caring and emotional person but she doesn't know how to show it due to not having developed communication skills compared to neurotypical people. A fair amount of autistic people are not shy people that don't care about you, they just have a different way of speech and communication. 2 autistic people can talk vastly different from each other. It is a spectrum after all. There are some who may have low empathy, but they are not psychopaths who don't care about human life. It's really, really weird to think that and kind of damaging to see autistic people in that kind of light.
Marie is also known to be a picky eater and despises vegetables, refuses to eat the ends of bread loafs, hates tomatoes and pineapple on pizza. (she's literally me holy shit...) some autistic people can have sensory issues when it comes to certain textures and smells and vegetables usually have a weird texture compared to meats and other food groups. They can be seen as "picky eaters" that don't wanna try anything but, some autistic people genuinely cannot eat certain foods and may get sick in the stomach if they see that food and would rather eat anything else. You cannot get me to eat carrots, like I'm sorry but that's not happening buddy. I don't care if they are baked or boiled, i refuse to put that shit in my mouth.
She was also on team order like Marina as she likes to keep things nice and tidy like with most autistic people. Not all but most.
A little tidbit i wanna add as well is that since Splatoon 2, Marie has been seen holding an parasol and for seemingly no reason. Some may say she holds it to seem more professional, however i think she has it around because she likes to hold it in her hands and use it to fidget with, much like Harmony with the Ultra Hand. You can see her spin it around when you stay around her for a little bit in Splatoon 3's story mode. Although I might be looking too deeply into this but i think it might be a cute little detail.
I find it really fantastic that Splatoon not only has good representations of autism, but it's also pretty diverse and shows different elements of the spectrum. Not every single aspect of the spectrum as there isn't an example of a high needs autistic character in Splatoon that I can think of unfortunately, but if you can think of a character who may be in the high needs category of the spectrum then let me know, however we got a pale skinny sea anemone who runs a general store and uses an Ultra Hand to fidget with, a tall black woman who's extremely passionate about machinery and technology, and a Japanese squid woman who would rather eat a Splattershot than a tomato. (Callie and Marie are based off of Japanese culture, look at their clothing and styles of music. If they were humans they would not be white women, sorry to break it to you bud.)
Before this ends i wanna say, if you disagree with me then that's fine. I get it. They aren't canonically confirmed to be on the autism spectrum and a lot of this is just speculation and observation. However don't be a fucking dick about it okay? Don't say that i don't know anything about autism and that I'm crazy and dumb. Don't do that shit. Seriously. I am allowed to look deeper into these characters and find relatability and comfort in them. Don't try to make me feel like a freak for this.
Anyways if i did get something wrong about autism let me know in a fair and polite way. I am human and I'm gonna make mistakes, but don't be a dickhead about it, k? Good. Have a goodnight or good day wherever you live.

Hello. I hope I'm not bothering you, but I was wondering what's your personal headcanons on the Bayverse Turtles? I may have spelled headcanons wrong, so correct me if I am wrong.
(Dude I always spell headcanons wrong I got you)
Oooh hc time! Random stuff really, but:
Mikey has ADHD and Autism. I mention it very briefly in my tmnt chat fic, but I read a fanfic with this idea and it just fits so much for me. Especially the ADHD, which I think the creator of the movie confirmed somewhere anyway?
Donnie has chronic pain in his upper back/spine area, specifically where the shoulders are. To me, he just seems to have a more awkward, uneven build compared to his brothers - he is thinner and taller, yet his shell is still huge. So i kind of had this hc floating around. Idk if other people like it but eh. Cant be a nerd without a bad back I guess
Mikey and Donnie are definitely the younger brothers. Mikey being almost a full year after Donnie, and Donnie being about half a year after Raph and Leo (who are the same age)
Raph knits. Basically confirmed anyway. Specifically he learnt to knit after they were struck by a particularly harsh winter and needed blankets - Raph, being the only one that wasn’t too weak/in hibernation mode at the time, learnt how to knit to try and protect his family when he couldn’t fight the enemy with punches and kicks. He still knits blankets for them every year when the winter grows cold. They keep every one, so they have the comfiest beds
They share a room. 4 giant turtles crammed into one room with rickety bunk beds and hammocks is very funny to imagine
Leo loves romance movies. In particular the TV movie ones.
Leo had a similar attitude to Raph when he was a child until Splinter went missing for a few days whilst scavenging for food (he was fine in the end…mostly. A hasty escape from a warehouse caused him to injure his leg and be forced to hide until he could gain enough strength to return to his sons). When seeing his brothers grow hungry and scared over the few days he took charge, becoming much more of the Eldest Brother figure.
Mikey idolises Leo. He wants to be just like him one day. He thinks he’s the coolest. (It makes Leos comment about his head “always being in the clouds” hurt so much more)
Mikey gets a Klunk eventually, saved from being drowned. Her siblings were not as lucky (yes, I am very much writing a fic for this)
Donnie’s favourite pass time is computer science/programming/IT based activities, like how 2012 Donnie seems to enjoy chemistry the most and 2003 Donnie leans heavily towards engineering.
Leo loves house plants
Raph hates house plants
Donnie is blind as hell without his glasses and spent a lot of his younger years unable to see much. Once he could finally see he suddenly was given a world with endless possibilities and potential
Leo is terrible at technology. I’m talking 80 year old woman bad. He always clicks on scam ads and blows up computers. Something just doesn’t click with him and technology
They all have heavy turtle instincts due to them, like 2003, being just turtles rather than a mix of human dna. This causes them to have instincts and qualities turtles have such as retreating into their shells, brumating (at least partially), chirping, etc.
Donnie has a major sweet tooth
Raph can’t stand most sweet things
As kids, they would spend most their time looking at the human world and pretending they were with them.
Donnie is autistic, and has a lot of stims when he is happy that involve chittering and chirps.
Leo cheats at every video game/board game they play due to the eldest sibling advantage
Mikey loves to draw his own comics
Their Christmas hip hop album is fire
Raph is actually the cook, and is quite good at it. Mikey always burns things or they are undercooked because he’s too impatient, Donnie experiments and Leo blows everything up
That’s all for now!

Some elliedina (ellie x dina) headcanons I have thought about (the last of us 2 / tlou2) |
Dina is usually the little spoon, but Ellie sometimes wants to and embraces being the small spoon and lets her. This usually helps Ellie to fall asleep on nights she may be struggling to sleep.
Ellie is so shy in giving pda, so they have minimum pda usually unless Ellie is really wanting to do it more often.
Dina listens to Ellie talk and ramble for ages about space/dinosaurs/comics/etc. She will listen all the way.
Ellie (adhd + autistic) girlfriend and Dina (adhd) girlfriend who is more organised and on schedule, just the truth.
Dina is always early or on time, Ellie is always late even by a few minutes
Ellie learnt how to slow dance originally from Dina for Cat mainly before the two got together, though Ellie never danced with Cat because by then their relationship was over.
Ellie denies she has a type, but she does and Dina is the cleanest painting of her type.
Ellie adores being complimented by Dina despite how flustered it makes her, her favourites are being called handsome, hot stuff, pretty, and Dina being the luckiest to have her.
Favourite dates for them are movie nights, art nights, game nights, or dinner together.
If they lived in the modern world, without the outbreak Ellie would be a tattoo artist and Dina more than likely a florist or nurse.
Jesse years before they got together had tried to set them. He always knew about at least ellies crush on Dina, ultimate wingman.
Dina hobbies would be dancing, baking, cooking, exploring, games, and gardening for sure.
Ellie secretly tries to bake things for Dina, but most times, it's nearly sets the house of fire.
Ellie would be considered the nerd in the relationship, but Dina is secretly a massive one as well.
Modern day wise, these two would love Yellowjackets for sure, Dina's favourite characters would be Van, Taissa, and Jackie. Ellie's favourites are Shauna, Jackie, Van, and Lottie.

ok let’s talk about miguel o’hara because it needs to be done. i want to clarify that this is not a hate post or anti-miguel in any sense, but it is a critical analysis of his character and role in the spiderverse. if you don’t feel like you can read this right now, i suggest you like it/save it for later and read it when you feel like you can with an open mind
especially for anyone who’s a miguel enjoyer (i consider myself one as well) because if you really love his character, it’s important to understand why his character was created and what a great narrative tool it is! anyway-
miguel o’hara is, allegorically, a bigot.
now - let’s unpack and clarify that. miguel is allegorically a bigot - his character is used to represent a certain, specific type of bigotry we see in real life. notice how i’m saying “bigot” and not “racist” - because despite the memes, i don’t think miguel’s hatred of miles is rooted in antiblackness. i think it’s rooted in something a little more complicated, which is why i’m using the term bigotry. but this can be a little confusing, so let’s start from the beginning. or, at least, the most important part.
the canon.
i want you to really think about the word used here - canon. hearing that word should break the fourth wall for you, just like hearing “he’s got hammerspace!” should have earlier in the movie - or discussions different characters have surrounding their distinct art styles. it’s meant to break the fourth wall and draw attention to itself. specifically, the use of the word canon here is meant for us to take a step back from the in-universe events (treating the characters as “real” people and looking at events logically) and instead think of the spiderman story and mythos.
spiderman, as a story, has been told over and over again. we, as an audience, are deeply familiar with this story, as we’ve seen it as a live-action blockbuster in no less than three separate franchises. that’s not even mentioning all the cartoon adaptations, and of course the comic runs. adhering to a specific formula surrounding the story makes sense. when someone walks into a spiderman movie, they have certain... expectations. that no matter what version of spiderman this is, that they follow certain story beats and adhere to certain rules as they follow along in their journey. miguel, when explaining this to miles, focuses on said story beats (which i’ll get to in a second), but there’s something that’s way more important than specific plot points that we need to address here.
and that’s theme.
theme (if you’re not an english literature person), is basically something you take away from the story. it’s usually a moral, idea, or concept that can be applied to the world around you, and helps you learn more about yourself, society, culture, or history. all stories have themes - usually they have multiple. so let’s get into it.
the original spiderman comic was notable in several ways. the thing that made spiderman so popular and successful is that he was the first (notable) teenage superhero that wasn’t a part of a greater team. spiderman wasn’t a sidekick that was written in to appeal to an audience of children. he was a teenager himself - but he was no less competent or strong than the (mostly adult) villains he fought.
and not only was spiderman a kid - he was the kid. he was a nerd. he was an older white teen, yes - but he represented the type of person who would go out and buy a comic book more than any other hero at the time. before he became spiderman, peter parker was just kind of a geek. at the time (the 60s) this still identified him as an outcast. peter was socially awkward, not good with girls, he didn’t have many friends, and he was bullied consistently. the only thing he was good at was science, basically. we can connect peter’s original portrayal to many legitimately marginalized groups - specifically those that might be autistic and impacted by ableism. to those kids reading that comic, they saw a hero that represented them.
and how does peter represent them? what does spiderman teach these children by reading these comics? the original spiderman is the story of a man who, by chance, was granted the opportunity for greatness - to become an integral part of his community. spiderman uses his skills (both those granted to him by the spider, but also those that he inherently has, such as his skills with science and engineering), in order to prove his worth and merit. it’s lonely, the road he has to walk - he can’t tell his friends and family who he is, lest they become victims like uncle ben - or lest they betray him. he can only rely on himself and his own knowledge in order to protect his community. the themes we draw from spiderman are this: luck can strike at any time, but you need to use your own strength and intelligence to pull yourself up afterwards, no matter how hard things get. no matter how many people you lose.
that’s what miguel believes spiderman is about. this original spiderman story is that of the american dream. of a youth who is ostracized by society (for whatever reason), but is still able to use their own merit to overcome the obstacles placed in front of them and the grief and pain they face on their path to greatness. it’s a hard and lonely path, but miguel values anyone who has the bravery to face it.
so why does he hate miles?
because he didn’t do it alone. because miles doesn’t believe in the traditional american dream.
if you want to read more about that, check out my analysis comparing spider-society and visions academy over here (it’s not as in-depth as i would like it to be, but it gets the job done) but basically: miles believes that every person deserves greatness. he states it very clearly when talking to his dad about how he won the lottery to go to visions: he just got lucky. he feels as if he took an opportunity away from someone else. why is it just given to him, when anyone else at brooklyn middle is just as deserving of an amazing education? when these resources should be put to use to uplift his whole community, not just miles alone?
miles brings that same energy as a spider-person. he’s not just an anomaly because his spider was from a different dimension. he’s an anomaly because he had a mentor. not only a mentor - he had a whole clan of spider-people there for him. while peter b parker and the crew weren’t always very good allies for miles, they still wanted him to succeed. each spider-person was an outcast - not in the same way as miles, but they were eager to describe what miles needed to master in order to keep himself safe as a crime-fighter. although they weren’t always supportive, it wasn’t because they were “gatekeeping” - it’s because they were worried miles might hurt himself. to them, he hadn’t put in the work on his own, and because he hadn’t proven himself as a spider-person in isolation, they thought there was no way he could be successful as a spider-person during a very high-risk mission.
however, miles proves them wrong. it’s true that miles has to pull upon his own inner strength, but he also pulls on wisdom from those that mentored him - his father, his uncle aaron, peter parker, and peter b parker. as well as love and support from his community. miles became spiderman - but not in isolation. he had help, and support, and love - always - that helped him succeed.
because spiderman - in all universes - represents success in america. in the original comics, spiderman is able to overcome his status as an outcast in order to help his city. he now has great power - a potential allegory related to wealth and social or political status. he uses that power in order to protect the community he loves (nyc) as they can’t all protect themselves.
now let’s bring it back. miguel. right.
miguel has already made his mark as a spiderman. although we know he broke canon, it wasn’t related to him becoming spiderman. we can assume that miguel still went through serious struggle and trauma to get to where he’s at. and now, through thematic analysis, we know that becoming spiderman represents success in america.
so, miguel’s dislike of miles, thematically, connects to how older generations may believe that younger generations “have it too easy” or “don’t put in the same effort.” it’s the (mainly capitalistic) ideal that in order to succeed, it has to be in isolation, without outside help. we can infer that miguel is not only upset that miles didn’t do things “canonically” - but that he is afforded success that miguel doesn’t think he deserves. miguel believes that in order to succeed in america, one needs to do it on their own, and suffer in order to succeed. no “hand-outs,” no support, no community outreach. it’s a very rigid capitalistic standard - which is why i called it “bigoted.” miguel is still a marginalized figure - and it’s important that miguel is the one stating the viewpoint, not a white spiderman. because this isn’t a white vs black storyline. miguel’s dislike of miles is specifically a sort of generational, inter-community bigotry.
for someone who hasn’t experienced it - think of it like hazing. you join a new sports team. the senior players say “you carry the equipment out and clean everything after the game.” you ask “why? can’t we all just do it together? aren’t we supposed to be a team?” and they say “no. you’re the new guys. hard work builds character. deal with it.”
alright. so we took a look at canon through a meta-story lens. now let’s pull it back even further.
so, miguel’s ideology. he adheres firmly to canon, a series of events that cannot (or, should not), change. if we apply that to our lives, that sounds a lot like predestination. destiny. fate. let’s call it predestination for now - you’ll see why in a minute.
now, a belief in predestination makes sense. it can bring a lot of people comfort, thinking that horrible events are out of their hands, and often times it can be harmless to believe in predestination in these instances. for example: someone who blames themselves for not being able to say goodbye to a loved one who died suddenly. if this person believes in predestination, it might ease some of their pain and guilt to know that there was nothing they could do - that it was the will of some higher power that their loved one is gone, and that there was nothing they could do to prevent it. some individuals might find comfort in knowing that they are not to blame for the work of the universe.
however, predestination can also be malicious. thinking that things are the will of the universe, or the will of god... that’s been used for some pretty fucked up stuff in the past. in a more moderate (and topical) example - royalty. many kings used the concept of predestination to explain why they deserved the crown. their bloodline was chosen by god himself - that’s why they’re powerful (compare to spider-people and their success. if they are also predestined for their spider-bite, doesn’t that make them akin to monarchs?)
in more nefarious examples, predestination can be used to subjugate and oppress others. predestination was used in ancient indian society in order to justify the caste system - utilizing the hindu concept of karma to justify why certain members of society were mistreated and oppressed. in a more american sense, predestination was often used as a way to justify both slavery and segregation. originally, slavers tried to justify that god wanted black individuals to serve as slaves because it was his will. later, when divine intervention fell out of fashion, they attempted to use eugenics to justify that black individuals were simply born inferior - that it was just science, and that there was nothing they could do about it.
that’s the other reason it’s called canon. the original usage of the word was to refer to the books of the bible that the church recognized as legitimate. it ties back to faith and religion.
now, religion, faith, and even the belief in fate itself - are not inherently bad. miguel’s belief in predestination doesn’t make him a bad or bigoted person inherently. however, the way he forces other to believe and adhere to it is. it’s very likely that miguel became so attached to the canon in order to justify why his wife and daughter died - in order to remove his own accountability for their passing and instead place the blame on some higher power. this belief snowballed out of control, however - and now influences his jealousy and distaste for miles and his way of life.
because forcing a canon - a story - on miles, is wrong. when miguel tells miles that his father must die, that he has to adhere to canon - that’s a horrible thing to say to a young black boy. to tell him that in order to be successful as a marginalized individual (to be spiderman) that he has to lose the last black male role model he has? it’s heinous! it’s akin to telling miles that in order to succeed, he has to cut ties with part of his culture. which does happen to young marginalized people in america. they are told that in order to be successful, they have to leave their culture, community, and support system behind.
it’s especially sinister when looking at it from the point of view of storytelling. when looking at it from that angle, miguel is basically telling miles that in order for his story - the story of a young black boy - to be profitable, he has to go through even more trauma and loss. it’s similar to what his guidance counselor mentions when discussing how miles should write his college entrance essay - that he should lie, and emphasize that he struggles while growing up, and that his support system was unstable. it’s the traditional story of a struggling black boy - which i discuss more here when talking about earth 42 miles and his inclusion in the spiderverse.
miguel’s bigotry is centrally tried to his idea of what american society expects of marginalized individuals who were able to achieve their dreams despite it all. a story of pain and struggle. one where they were able to - only through their own strength and intelligence, and maybe with a little bit of luck - pull themselves up, and quietly work towards their own success.
miguel’s belief in the american dream and predestination not only influences his treatment of miles, but also his creation of spider-society. now, let me be frank: miguel, in this franchise, is not supposed to represent someone who created systematic oppression. he’s simply one of the people who believed in bigoted ideals and allowed those ideals to influence his decisions. because when miguel created spider-society, it basically became an elitist isolation chamber. spider-society is located in a huge tower on miguela’s earth. the tower is so tall and imposing on the utopian landscape, there’s no way that miguel is able to properly support his own community as spiderman - he’s not worried about what happens to his own community. especially once we learn that a good portion of them live underground, where miguel can’t even see them. even if he wasn’t occupied with anomalies at all times, there’s no way he could even connect with nueva york around him.
the same can be said of all the spider-people in headquarters. they’re not even in their home dimensions. how can they possibly support their communities when they have isolated themselves as far away as they could literally be? it parallels how successful individuals often treat their communities in reality - what do wealthy people usually do at the first sign of their wealth? they build a huge mansion to get away from it all. many times in our capitalist society, wealthy and successful people abandon the communities they should be supporting.
miguel represents that. he is a successful, powerful person, who decided to focus only on other successful, powerful people like him. marginalized people who achieved the american dream on their own. people who, instead of uplifting others, instead tear down those who don’t fit into their “mold.” who are successful in their own right, but don’t hold the same ideals and values that they do. who aren’t the model example of marginalized success in the eyes of the (white) american “audience.”
miguel is a product of a great problem within society. while he partakes and perpetuates bigotry, that doesn’t mean that he’s irredeemable. the narrative shows that miguel is a broken man. if we think about to the end credits scene from itsv, where he calls his dimensional travel bracelet a “goober” - he wasn’t always so hateful. he wasn’t always like this. he can un-learn his bigotry and he isn’t completely lost. the way that he discusses his ideas - it’s clear that he knows that there are flaws in them, just as other spider-people consistently point out. he can be changed and improved - just like our real leaders and role models can be changed and improved. miguel is not without saving - but it’s important to remember that he does need to be saved.

‼️🚨Jurassic World Chaos Theory Spoilers🚨‼️
Just so y'all know I'm not shitting on anyone's theories and such and saying that they're 100% not true, because theories are for fun, predicting what might happen. This is just me sharing my opinions on theories. All of these theories are good theories and I love all of them, this is just me sharing my opinion, I mean no harm. All of this is gonna be under the cut as to not clutter people's screens
So like, The Handler. Ms Microbangs herself. The FUCK is up with her? Like, why in the hell does she jus have a trio of trained atrocaraptors at her beck and call? Clearly she has an attachment to them. Did she, perchance, grow up with them? If she was introduced to them as a child when they were hatchlings and they grew up together it makes sense they would have a close bond and be able to communicate like they do in the warehouse in the final (I think) episode. We can't exactly use Blue as a starting point for this thinking because we're talking about Microbangs being raised with raptors, not Microbangs raising the raptors.
I have multiple theories for this woman. One I haven't seen others talk about, is that she is a Dino Nerd. Perchance the daughter of someone important or special, who decided their dino nerd kid could have the chance to see the dinos she oh so loves up and personal. Basically, this theory is Microbangs being a normal human, but used as a sort of experiment for training raptors in a way. She grew up with them, and they grew up with her, creating the bond they share. And being raised with and/or by non-humans can explain some of her behaviors too. Or she's autistic. Or both! Why not both!
I've seen people say she's maybe a dino-human hybrid, but I don't think that's true. Yes it gives an explanation to WHY she acts the way she does and now she has such a deep connection to these raptors and can communicate with them, but she's still quite human. If she were a hybrid wouldn't she have more dino qualities? Yes her wide unblinking eyes aren't the most human of traits, but that could simply be a character choice to make her seem creepier. Shes still seemingly human. We know Dino-Human experimentation was a topic touched for a new Jurassic movie. We know it's likely they would have tried at least. Though a dino-human hybrid seems bad fucking ass dude.
Another theory we see floating around is she's perchance a robot. This one is kinda iffy for me. It's a good idea, but a robot? It does explain quite a bit, especially her tendency to not blink. Though we've seen before that the robots in this series are kind of totally incompetent (then again the redditor made them so we can't be too harsh on the robots). Though I don't see much evidence for this theory, I still enjoy it and think there's a lot of potential in it.
Pls pls pls share your theories or talk to me about the ones I talked about here plsplspls I'm begging I need people to yap about The Handler with plsplspslspslslslslslsl

Okayyy hehe. So I’m an introvert. Not shy. But I enjoy being alone. I’m a total nerd. I love music. I also have a lot of hobbies and I’m really artistic. I love to read. I also love singing and I’m pretty good at it. I’m autistic. So sometimes I struggle reading people and usually assume the worst.
I have a deep desire to feel loved and cherished. I love romance and I also sign my name with a heart. I write poetry and I love collecting hardcover books. My favorite season is winter. I love cold days where I can bundle up. My love language is physical touch and words of admiration.
I love horror movies, documentaries and reality tv. I love whiskey lol. I’m really sassy and I’m sarcastic. I am addicted to coffee and social media lol. But yeah! Some facts about me. I’m curious to hear who you ship me with hehe.
based on this info, I think Kyle (not sure if you’re into the franken thing but I just know he’d be your pet and do whatever you want him to do and love you so much). I think that you’d spend night ins watching horror movies and true crime documentaries, and he’d share a whisky on the rocks with you. He’d also take the effort to go get you a coffee every morning before you wake up to surprise you with it. He’d love to hear you sing and think it’s the most beautiful thing in the whole world, and it would definitely comfort him when he’s feeling stressed or frustrated. I think he’d also share your difficulties with reading people and would definitely empathise with you. You’d spend a lot of time together, and he’d never ever get bored of it.

My very first post using my art. Oh boy…
It’s not good but I wanted to share this here for Autism Awareness Month. A tribute piece to the series/ characters that mean the world to me. I adore both One Piece and TMNT, they got me through some of the worst things I’ve ever had to endure.
Brook is a character that tends to be forgotten in the grander scale of the One Piece world, but this wacky skeleton saved my life. I’ve been reading/ watching this series since 2012 and Brook was the main reason why I became a fan. He’s not the most popular, he’s not an uber strong mega warrior, he’s a rockstar with a heart of gold ( IF HE HAD ONE, Skull Joke! 🤣 ) that, no matter how hard things have been for him, he pushed forward and keeps going. He keeps living. He keeps striving to live to see the friend he left behind. And there’s something impactful in that message, to me.
As for TMNT, I’ve been a fan since the 2007 movie. I saw it in theaters as a kid, but it wasn’t until November that I got back into it. It pulled me out of a really stressful event and got the past few months, I’ve been in a fun loop of turtles. The 2012 and Rise versions are my personal favorites in terms of art/ storytelling.
2012 Leo is my favorite turtle. He’s such an anxious nerd who only wants to be the best ninja he can be. He struggles with being a leader, a good son, even pushing himself too far to be the wise older brother his family needs him to be. He had the weight of the world on his shoulders all the time and bares it alone a majority of the time, but he still makes time to be there for his brothers, to support them, to cheer them on. He wants to protect everyone and he fights to keep them safe… but despite the odds he still gets back up and stands for his loved ones. This poor baby needs all the hugs 🥺
And Rise Donnie is something very special 🤣🤣 There’s only two characters in media that I’ve related to, and he’s one of them. As an autistic woman who rarely finds autistic coded characters accurate in most shows, the writers nailed it with him. He’s quirky, he hyper fixates on the things he adores, he sticks to using his tech bō because he doesn’t like change and ITS REAL. It never once feels forced, and the little things he does like verbally pronouncing his actions or dancing just because??? ITS REAL. I literally pointed to the TV and said ‘THATS ME!’ Not since Dragon Age: Inquisition have I done such a thing, and all I have to say to the Rise writers is, hats off to you. You brought Donnie to life and you pulled it off phenomenally.
AAAAANYWAY 🤣
Sorry for such a long post! This got mushy and I’m sorry if I rambled 🤣🤣
This is why I love these franchises and these characters. They got me through so much and have improved my life for the better. I hope you liked this! I know my art isn’t the greatest but I worked on this sketch for hours 😅
Thank you for reading!! 😁

headcanon anon back again !! don't worry about the smaller details of the movie, my headcanons are mostly based just on vibes.
these are my scotty headcanons :)
⏤ he's autistic. my proof is that i'm autistic and he is literally me as a child.
⏤ spoiled as hell. look at him. only child raised by an extremely loving and doting mom. there's no way she didn't spoil him.
⏤ more of a science and math nerd, but he does enjoy history and english as well.
⏤ gets the WORST spring allergies.
⏤ can technically cook, but only if he has very clear step-by-step instructions on what to do. so he can only make stuff like boxed mac and cheese.
⏤ kinda likes doing class presentations because he feels proud of the work he put into it, although he does get kind of shy when he actually has present in front of the class.
⏤ he always double-knots his shoelaces because they will come untied if he doesn't.
⏤ he simultaneously likes scary stories and the one who gets most freaked out by them. he'll pretend not to be scared though.
and my benny headcanons !!
⏤ he's a morning person. it was his idea to wake up at eight o' clock in the morning to go play at the sandlot.
⏤ he has younger siblings. he just gives me older brother vibes idk.
⏤ he refuses to admit when he's sick. he could be dying and he'd still be like "i'm fine, you guys are overreacting."
⏤ says he doesn't like little kids, but he's still really great with them.
⏤ literally the most earnest person in the world. says exactly what he thinks, whether it's positive or negative.
⏤ you can tell he's an oldest sibling because he's bossy as hell. like if he tells his friends to stop doing something and they ask why, he's always like "because i said so."
⏤ adding onto the last headcanon, he always explains why if they ask again, but his initial reasoning is almost always the "because i said so."
⏤ sometimes he'll just lay down and toss a baseball in the air while bored. he has smacked himself in the face doing this SO many times.
that first one--your word is going enough for me! :D also yeah. only children 🤨 OMG i can totally picture him sneezing up a storm in the spring too poor guy. benny has SUCH older brother vibes, he's so good at adopting kids. oMG the last one lmaoooo i love it. all of these are so fun, you can really get a rounded sense of who they are as characters here! great stuff!

whatree your HCs for Satan and the Gang
cracks knuckles
gary :
bisexual. worlds most cisgender man ( he/him )
canon PTSD but I also KNOW he's got that autism adhd on him too
I think he was ABSOLUTELY a stoner before he died. Also he died in THE most cartoonish way possible. like piano falling on his head shit.
he's got a limp canonically too so I feel like he uses a leg brace when he's outside of hell ( satan won't know !! )
claude :
he/it/they butch lesbian I Will Not believe anything different
I think his behaviour in Conceal and Gary could possibly hint at his death being gun related. Honestly he's probably the only main guy I don't have solid death hcs on.
autistic girl swag.
He was probably about 31 at MOST when he died I think ( my personal age hc is about 29 though ).
They're on HellRT, no top surgery cus it just doesn't want it ( nor does he trust the doctors in Hell for. obvious reasons ).
troy :
pansexual. worlds first cisgender transsexual man ( he/him )
death via drunk driving in the mid 90s. he was a lawyer for tobacco companies AND an alcoholic, just makes sense to me.
My reason for why he wasn't in season 1 - 2 is that he was simply in a lower level of Hell and got a promotion come season 3.
Top and bottom surgery, prefers living stealth for his own comfort.
Absolutely has some undiagnosed anxiety disorder idk I can smell it on him.
Satan :
any pronouns genderfluid CANON BI I'LL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT THAT
suffers with delusions but yk that's BASICALLY canon. finally some good fucking delusional rep
autistic as fuck too, btw
she was probably human once but has forced herself to forget it all, her "real name" is the last reminder of it all.
soft spot for "ugly" animals :) d'awww
7 feet tall❤️ cus I'm normal
their horn dysphoria is a transgender allegory. to me personally

Autism and social hierarchy
I want to start my blog with a topic that I have given a lot of thought during this last year specifically: understanding social hierarchy as an autistic person.
Social hierarchy is everywhere: school, family, workplace, internet, friends... Literally everywhere. When I was little and I used to watch american high school movies, I thought that the depiction of the populars (sportist, pretty, outgoing people) and the losers (nerd, 'ugly' and shy individuals) was very exaggerated and not realistic at all. Now that I'm a grown-up girl out of school, I can say to myself that this division does indeed exist. It is not as obvious and dumb as they make seem in those movies; it is noiseless, hypocrite and apparently intrinsical on neurotypical people, which makes it so hard for autistic individuals to understand it's existence, or completely grasp the reason it exists.
The truth is that the vast majority of neurotypical people, even the ones you consider your friends, move around the world under this omnipresent social hierarchy. The top of this social hierarchy (think of it as a pyramide) is reserved to those who have the most desirable characteristics: a person with strong presence, obviously extroverted and with lots of friends, rich, prototipically pretty, and even better if white/cis/straight. Deepdown, morality doesn't matter at all, and neither does having a great intelligence or sensibility: they only matter on a performance basis, and this performance excludes showing them in low or high levels (not desirable to be perceived as too dumb, too sensitive, a 'snowflake' or a know-it-all).
Everyone aspires to be on the top, because it is a sign of desirability, superiority and privilege. However, since it is not possible for everyone to be on it, neurotypicals try to approach the top as much as they can, and they do that by establishing any kind of relationships with people at higher levels and gaining sympathy points. Think of it as a visual novel where you gain affection through interactions with the characters; this is very similar, since these people who are at the top will view you better or worse depending on how much you have flattered them, interacted with them, and acted according to their criteria, the last one being very important. If you don't act or present like how they want you to do, you will not gain their sympathy; and that means that you will not either gain the sympathy of those who try to approach the people at top. In fact, they will want to knock you down as a sign of dominance.
As you can start to guess, this situation obviously leads to some kind of survival game about eat or being eaten. It leads to bullying, ostracism and rejection. And who loses the most at these types of games? Minorities, of course. And minorities who don't understand and/or are unable to adapt to/follow social neurotypical games are at greater danger, like autistic people.
You can genuinely believe that you are very good friends with a neurotypical person; but if a conflict happens between you and a person who has greater social level than you, there's a 99% that your friend will: a) not take any sides because "it's not their business", b) not take your side and justify it even if they have to lie to you or themselves, c) literally stop talking to you. Between you, an autistic individual who maybe is nice but has 0 social level, and a popular person with big influence, neurotypicals choose the second, and they do almost as if they were programmed to do so. You will not understand, because social hierarchy does not exist for you: you don't care about famous people, about rich influencers, or about those classmates who have 2k followers. You care about your friends, and if they are in a vulnerable position, you will choose them without any doubt; but sadly, it's highly probable that the feeling isn't mutual.
In my case, I understand the concept of social hierarchy, but I don't understand why it has to exist. For me everyone is the same, money doesn't matter, looks doesn't matter, but personality and morality does. But I realized when I was a young teenager that people didn't think the same as me. Since I was a very perceptive and intelligent girl who did a lot of masking, I eventually learned how to act with people my age to at least not gain their dissaproval. Did it work? Yeah, it did, because I was a very good actress. However, I didn't gain their approval either, and it took me time and conflicts to realize it. When we were classmates, the role I genuinely gave to a lot of people was that of a good friend, or at least, a colleague I had a good relationship with; I was too naive and thought that the way I viewed my friendships was reciprocal. However, a lot of people actually just gave me the role of an adorable submissive pet who let them copy my homework, didn't have an opinion of her own and overall was 'very cute', 'very shy', 'very innocent'. Everytime I acted following my moral for once, the result I gained was ostracism and even some strong insults - those are stories I will explain another day.
Did my then friends defend me on these situations? Yes and no. One of them defended me because we were together on the ostracism; but time later, when I confronted a person with way bigger status, he did not back me up even though I was telling the truth. The friends I had on secondary school gave me a pat on my shoulder when I was rejected by my group, but kept talking in good terms with the same people who deeply hurt me. Would I do the same to then? No, and I never did. But that's the curse that comes with being an autistic person who will never understand nor have a good position at neurotypical social hierarchy. Ride or die doesn't really exist when it comes to us, unless you befriend other neurodiverse people.
No matter how good you try to accomodate to this structure, you will never receive any good things from it. It is a hard reality to face, especially during high school, but once you break free from it, things really become better for your mental health and your relationships; and while it is possible to have a good relationship with neurotypical people, it is also prone to disappointments, unilaterality (on both sides for different aspects) and miscommunication.
This is the end of the post, I will return tomorrow with more things to say ♡.

Rewatching CoS for the first time in like 2yrs, here's my stream of consciousness thoughts as I watch:
The steampunk aesthetic at the beginning is neat. Also a fan of this guy presenting his life's work to Al, who goes "that's the worst idea ever We Are Not Fucking Doing That" in his polite little way and then just starts walking away
The animation is immediately noticably higher quality than in 03 proper. I like the normal animation by this is also neat :)
The fact that physicist dude whose name I've already forgotten was actually capable of getting as far as the gate when human transmutation is funny to me. How do you have more willpower than Shou Tucker
The concept that CoS!Ed and I are the same age is just so much. Idk whether I should find you hot or gender sir...
Last time I saw this movie and Edward driving (poorly) I remember thinking about how I'd soon learn to do that too. And Then I Didn't™ (I'm autistic and it's scary etc)
This sub appears to be spelling Heiderich's name like Alphonse and I really wish it wouldn't
The Noah fortune telling thing is one of the parts of CoS that's like, I'm aware it's for plot armor but that still doesn't excuse the premise. The fact that they're establishing that no other magic-adjacent fma stuff (not just alchemy but also Envy's shapeshifting) even works in this dimension, but they still give their main Romani character magic fortune-telling/mindreading powers (and never explain why) is shitty
The opening credits art style is really pretty, even if I this gets to me:
Ed you are not that tall we all know you're not
The subplot about one of Noah's companions selling her out is also at best unnecessary
Glad to see that even without his alchemy Edward is still perfectly able to fight with what he has, i.e. explosives, steaming hot metal, and fucking up his automail (come to think of it, these were all tactics he also used when killing Sloth specifically, but I doubt there's any intentional parallel there)
I like how there's a lot of little characterization details early on. The parallel of Ed and Noah's quiet depression, his earnestness to tell anyone he thinks will listen (see: Alfons Heiderich) about his world contrasted with her interest in learning about it...
It was kind of funny though seeing Ed (resident science nerd and Shit From His Dimension Enthusiast) happy that Noah was curious about his prosthetics, before realizing that he also didn't really know how they worked
The Bradley/Lang thing is one of my other most serious problems with this movie's writing. Like. I know Lang canonically isn't Fuhrer Bradley's doppelganger but that of the human Bradley was, and I do think the writers made that clear so it would seem less like they were comparing the two. (And ik homunculi can be very different from their sources in terms of beliefs, see: Trisha being the Rockbells' friend and not liking to see Amestrian soldiers in Resembool vs. Sloth being the Fuhrer's secretary). But even given that, it still feels way too close to equating Bradley to a Jewish man (who's also an actual irl person, not just a character they made up for the movie)
Envy vs. Edward fight 2: Ed has a gun this time
I think Envy's serpent/leviathan form is sick actually. Look at this shit:
Just wholesome sibling bonding moments
The "Envy gets captured by the Thule society" subplot is the third main writing decision in CoS I take serious issue with. Like I do see why the writers could hardly redeem Envy (they'd never help Ed), but also couldn't make them a main antagonist (they're a kind of campy (? not exactly right the word but you get it) villain, and so it would be in really bad taste for them to be too relevant in movie where all the other villains are literal Nazis). But the canon solution of "we don't know what to do with Envy's character in this movie, so to avoid having them make real plot decisions, they're going to get imprisoned and experimented on by Nazis and then killed off" is so awful? Especially with them trying to escape and getting hunted down again. It's a horrible writing choice to make for plot armor
The pose/lighting we first see Hohenheim in here mimics the one we see Ed coming out of The Gate in at the end of 03. Wonder what it means
I'm trying so hard to like Winry's CoS clothes but I still don't really. Tragic that the most masculine outfit we ever get to see her in is this, the one choice that looks weird to me for no reason. I think she deserves a vest like Ed
The animation on the soldiers sucks so the animation everywhere else can be good. Equivalent exchange
The thing of Al being polite but clearly not recognizing his old allies is so. God. Drives me insane. Alphonse my sonnn
Thank you for saving Al Rose, it's clear which of you had the braincell on that one
The bit where Noah basically asks Heiderich if he's working for Nazis and he goes "I just want to build rockets :)" as if to distance himself from responsibility for his actions... Hm. I have thoughts on his characterization and the thematic point of him but they'll be easier to articulate when I'm further through the movie
Ed talking quietly to himself as he skulks around and looks at the transmutation circle... Edward ily I hope you know that
Elric brothers back together babey!!!
Ed's little smile about having seen Al and Al waking up in his world and starting to cry.... Argh you can't do this to me movie...
This movie needs more Wrath. Maybe that's just me and my thing of caring a lot about the timeskip between 03 and CoS but I want to know more about what's going on with him
The fact that when we first see him he's just sitting defeated at Izumi's graveyard and has let his automail break down rather than reach out for repairs. And that once Winry fixes it for him he immediately goes off with Al on what for him is a suicide mission... Wrath how are you coping with it all buddy
The bit where Ed stares at alternate Lyra and she turns up her nose at him is so funny to me I'm sorry. Lyra my friend, even aside from my aro Ed HC someone with your face is the last person to be his type ever. Just trust me on this one
The entire conversation with Lang is another "I get what the writers were going for but still" moment
The. The bit where Sheska tells Winry she'll show her where the underground city is after they visit the cemetery. Feels like dramatic irony
I don't think I was able to see as well before how big the underground city is...
Two well adjusted, mentally stable young fellows competing to see who's more suicidal:
"He's like me- a monster!" I know it might be different in the dub translation, but Wrath. Wrath :(
Ed I really doubt you'd survive a fall from that height irl
It's sad that Noah never got into Ed's world imho. Like I get why thematically it wouldn't really work but still
With his hair flowing like that underwater, Wrath almost looks like his mother (Sloth). Ofc that's partly just fma03 typical sameface but
The Gluttony vs Wrath fight is sick, though I do feel a bit bad about Gluttony's fate
*Guy who isn't big on the idea of Wrath forgiving Izumi and also doesn't want to think about the fact that he just died voice* This isn't how the gate works. The only other times we've seen dead people's souls in the gate was when they had literally just died. That's why Al at the beginning and Ed at the end didn't come back as homunculi, because it had just happened. So there's no reason Izumi would still be in the gate
Hohenheim's death is the only CoS writing choice involving Envy that I really like. Envy, whose main goal in life was to kill Hoheinheim for failing him as a father. Them ultimately being forced to do so by Hohenheim himself as a way of helping Edward, Hohenheim's other child, is just. Hollowest victory possible isn't it my friend
Now that Alfons Heiderich is dead and we've seen everything of him that we're going to I'm trying to gather my thoughts on how he's written. I've talked about being ambivalent with how his characterization is before and I guess I still am. But it's feeling more and more like "I really dislike this guy as a person but might (?) think he's well-written as a character".
One criticism of his writing I've had is that he isn't a good representation of Alphonse Elric, as I feel like *gestures at all of fma03* kind of demonstrates that Al ultimately wouldn't act like this in Alfons's position. But on rewatch, I kind of feel like Alfons's final speech about how he was real and not part of Ed's dream feels partially like a message to the audience not to view them as synonymous. Given that I do think the whole doppelgangers premise is weird but like. I'll take it?
Anway, for Alfons himself. A core message of fma03 is that harming others cannot be justified in the name of chasing one's own hopes and dreams. This is relevant to basically every subplot where the philosopher's stone is important (Lab 5, Dante's actions, etc), to Mustang having to put aside his ambitions before he can actually make a positive change, "even when our eyes are closed, there's a whole world that exists outside ourselves and our dreams" (i think that's the line), etc. And imo this premise is crucial to understanding Alfons Heiderich. The EXPLANATION for his behavior is that he's a slowly dying scientist desperate to make something of his life's work, and that he wants to help his friend get home. But neither of these facts is an EXCUSE for his willingness to help Nazis in order to achieve his own goals. I think his writing tracks on a thematic level
Winry and Sheska also def couldn't have survived that fall
The truth gunk on the ships is weird and totally not how the gate has worked before but I kind of like it
Ed's confrontation with Al about him opening the gate is so good arghhhhhhh
First time seeing Mustang in two years and he and Ed are already at each other's throats with Al apologizing for his brother, same as it ever was
Last Ed vs Eckhart conversation did seem a bit on the nose/unsubtle but I liked the fight choreography
The ending makes no sense on a ton of technical levels (you're going to. Destroy The Gate. The interdimensional gate where people's souls go right after they die that opens when you try to bring them back. Full of weird silhouette unrealized homunculus hand blobs. Containing all human knowledge. You're destroying it. How™) (and what happens if they succeed? Is human transmutation impossible to try now?) but I get what they were going for on a thematic level
Hiiiii Scar and Lust
Well that was CoS ig
#fma#fma 03#fma cos#fma rewatch#racism mention#nazi mention#antisemitism mention#suicide mention#adrien says stuff#sorry if my thoughts seem distracted I'm literally just about to graduate high school (like. in the car to the ceremony as I type this)#I'm glad I achieved my “rewatch all of fma03 before that” goal#fun fact we could choose red or yellow gowns and I chose red primarily bc of Ed's jacket#headcanons analysis au ideas and such

So I had a bathtub wonderment, one of those odd thoughts that strike me while lounging in my tub. It's about autism, and I have no idea if it's at all sound, so feel free to tell me how wrong I am. Here's the main thought, with more detail behind the cut:
What if being on the autism spectrum is actually typical and not being on the spectrum is atypical?
Look, I'm old, from before it was known that autism is a spectrum. When I was a kid, "autistic" was a description only applied to someone who was completely non-verbal, non-interactive, and constantly banging their head against a wall. Everyone else just had various "difficulties." But now, as An Old nearing the age of 60, the more I learn about the spectrum, the more I notice that I check the boxes and always have.
I have huge sensory issues and get easily overwhelmed by smells (especially) and sound. (Which might seem ironic, given that I am a concert pianist and symphonic musician, but it's chaotic sound, like when a lot of people are talking at once or loud, surround-sound movies with lots of sudden noises, that gets me. Music, classical in particular, is very ordered, non-chaotic sound even when loud, and it focuses me rather than overwhelms me.) I have been known to hide in closets with my hands over my ears at parties and conferences and such when it gets too much, especially so when I was younger and hadn't developed the coping mechanisms that I have now.
Food textures bother me greatly, to the point that I don't like certain foods not because of the taste but because their textures (or their smell, in the case of fish/seafood) make me gag.
I am very gifted in one area -- music, having been a child prodigy -- and completely average or even below in most others.
While I can force myself to be social and outgoing because I've developed coping mechanisms over the years, I greatly prefer to be alone or with just one or two other people who I know very well and can "read" well.
I have very…er, focused…esoteric interests that I will completely nerd out on at length that other people find completely baffling/boring. (Like climates, for instance. :) And dinosaurs, when I was a kid, when they weren't quite as popular as they are now.)
These are, apparently, all "symptoms" of autism, particularly in adults. I haven't been diagnosed and wouldn't seek to be now because, at this point, it doesn't negatively affect my life, but I strongly suspect that I could get a diagnosis, if I pursued one. But the thing is that most people I know in real life seem to check a lot of the boxes, too. Granted, that could just be the company I keep, with like attracting like, but I also notice it a lot online. Which, again, could simply be because people on the autism spectrum feel more comfortable being and communicating online. I don't know. It just seems to me like more people are neurodivergent to some degree than not, yet we've built a world/society that caters to those who aren't.
This could be explained if we, as a species, are gradually evolving toward autism as typical, maybe not in terms of genetics but rather in epigenetic ways brought on by the fact that, for instance, we are slowly becoming more isolated from each other due to things like the development of the concept of nuclear rather than multi-generational families living together as well as by the internet/technology, where it's possible to instantly communicate with people all over the world, even have friendships/relationships with them, and yet never physically interact with them. In such a world, autism actually has advantages, so there might be selection pressure for it and corresponding pressure against what has always been perceived as "normal."
Anyway, that was my thought. I'm not a psychologist, obviously, so I wouldn't be surprised if my thought is a load of hooey. :) But, it was interesting to entertain.
