“why would i listen to someone "simply telling" me what words to use?”
….Because it's a necessary step for communication? Because in order to have language we at some point have to agree on a set of sounds to correspond to a given concept?
“in fact, i don't think I've ever seen a "definition" because every time I've seen someone telling me what words to use, it always comes with attached claims, like you easily identify with the dictionary example. if i ever happened to see a "definition" it might well be impossible for it to be wrong, but I don't expect to see one any time soon.”
You seem like someone who has probably done pure mathematics at some point in your life so I highly doubt you've never seen a definition in the purest sense.
The truth claim I identified in the dictionary example does not lie in the definition of horses, it lies in the context of placing that definition in a dictionary, which is an object with a use other than “contain any definition someone could hypothetically invent”. What truth claim do you think is made by using the combination of letters h-o-r-s-e to refer to the particular rideable animal it currently refers to as opposed to any other combination of letters? Is it wrong to also call a seahorse a seahorse because someone might think this implies a seahorse has more in common with that animal than it does?
"what's wrong about the horse definition isn't exactly "it's not the consensus". it's that i got the part of speech wrong and the description is of plasmodia. do you *really* think the most likely reason for the error is that i was trying, in some subtle, "implicit" way to assert consensus that horses are very small and cause malaria”
Yes, I can guess that you probably wouldn't actually have meant to assert that, in the same way that if you made a strange enough typo you might write a sentence I could guess you didn't mean to type. Nonetheless that is what you would be asserting by putting it in a dictionary, the same way your hypothetical typo'd sentence would still have a meaning you didn't intend. The definition is not consensus because someone could, hypothetically, have a personal vocabulary where they call horses plasmodia and plasmodia horses, and not be misled about any actual facts about the world as long as they understand that other people do it the opposite way around and remember to mentally translate every time they encounter the world - it would be an incredibly inconvenient and unusual personal idiosyncrasy but not technically wrong.
It is also ironic that you end your response by using what is clearly a completely personal and idiosyncratic definition of witchcraft and expecting others to understand you.
what irony? throughout this penny-excursion to Bedlam to see the Lunaticks (or rather, Plutoniacks) I have been consistently saying how a worldpicture and the meaning within it can be well disclosed by a purposeful, thoughtful, poetical use of terminology. That is exactly what I am doing! I am posting through a very specific persona, and this whole tumblr blog is a disclosure of a worldview.
You, on the other hand, are an anonymous grey ball. It is just as fitting that you - like the other grey balls I get from time to time who speak to me with a very familiar voice of Millennial Conscience by employing some stereotyped bit of social control (I am "not having a normal one", or am "yikes"worthy, or like your sibling in sphericity suggested of me earlier this week, that i "woke up today and decided to be...") and are appealing precisely above all to an "implicit consensus". You disclose a worldview of "reading the room". Social engineering simplified and operationalised so even shift managers can employ it... Vulgar...
Speaking of dull globes, that reminds me. Before those pictures were beamed back, this is what the best picture of Pluto was:
Tumblr media
Do you recognise it? It's an anonymous grey sphere with black markings on it. Is it a cousin of yours? Is this why you have a fondness for the 2005 solar system picture?

Quote
Because we, who have become sight-joined, see the world, accepting one principle (or ‘first thing’, or fundamental) which has a power that becomes many is certainly the one best option. The picture of names and forms, the one who sees, the cohesive screen, and the pervading light – all these are he, who is oneself.
Sri Ramana Maharshi - Ulladu Narpadu (The Forty verses on Reality), Verse 2
[…] — pārvaisēr nāmulahaṅ kāṇḍalā ṉāṉāvāñ cattiyuḷa vōrmudalai yoppa lorutalaiyē — nāmavuruc cittiramum pārppāṉuñ cērpaḍamu māroḷiyu mattaṉaiyun tāṉā mavaṉ. […]
Explanatory paraphrase :
Because we, the ego or individual, whose adjunct-nature is the faculty to see things as other than ‘I’, see this world of multiplicity, it is indispensable for us to accept the existence of one first principle which has a power to appear as many. This worldpicture, which consists merely of names and forms, the seer of this picture, the screen or supporting base upon which this picture appears, and the pervading light which illumines this picture – all these are only He, that one first principle, who is none other than the real Self.
Because we, who [by rising as the ego] have become joined with sight, see the world, accepting one mudal [first thing, origin, source, base or fundamental reality] that has a power that becomes many [appearances, namely ourself as the ego, the seer or perceiver, and all the manifold phenomena that constitute this or any other world that we may see or perceive] is certainly the one best option. The picture of names and forms [namely the world and whatever other phenomena appear in the mind], the one who sees [this picture] [namely the ego], the cohesive screen [namely the mind as the background on which it appears], and the pervading light [namely the mind as the reflected light of awareness, which is what illumines its appearance] — all these are he [the one original thing], who is oneself [one’s real nature].
Explanatory Note :
The link-words at the beginning of this verse are pārvai sēr, which literally mean ‘who are joined with sight’, and which imply that the faculty of seeing is not natural to us but is only an adjunct which we have appended on ourself and from which we can consequently detach ourself.
The words ōr mudalai, which mean ‘one principle’ or ‘one first thing’, denote the one Reality which underlies the appearance of both the world and the seer. The entire appearance consisting of the world, the seer, the screen and the light are not other than that one first principle, which is affirmed in the last line of this verse to be the real Self. But so long as we experience a difference between ourself, the seer, and the world which we see, that one first principle will be experienced by us as God, a third separate entity who is endowed with unlimited qualities such as Omnipotence and Omniscience and who governs the entire world and all the souls in that world.
The words nāṉā ām śakti, which literally mean ‘a manifold power’ or ‘ a power which is many’, denote the power of Maya or delusion which is the cause of the appearances of all manyness and which is the same as the wonderful power (adisaya sakthi) mentioned in verse 6 of Arunachala Ashtakam. Though in absolute truth, this power is not other than the first principle, the real Self, it seems to be something different from the real Self when it gives rise to this appearance of manyness. Since manyness could not appear to exist if this power did not exist, and since there is nothing other than this power which could appear as many, it is sometimes said that this power itself has become many. However, its becoming many is not actually a real becoming, but only a seeming becoming, because even when manyness is seen, all that manyness is in truth only the one first principle, which is the non-dual real Self. The act of becoming many or seeming to become many is postulated only because we see the world. But even when we see this world of duality and multiplicity, non duality alone is the truth and hence all duality and multiplicity should be understood to be merely an unreal appearance.
The words “the pervading light” (ār oḷiyum) here mean the mind-light, which is a reflection of the real light of self-consciousness and which is the limited light by which we see the entire picture of names and forms.

The difference between the IAU 2005 worldpicture and "flat earth theory" is that the former is a scientific world-picture of the kind I assume you are familiar with and the latter is neither scientific, nor really a world-picture. "flat earth theory" is a schtick, and can fairly be described as NOTHING BUT commitment to the bit that "the earth is flat" is true and the rest of "flat earth theory" is fun, misdirection, emotional tricks and sophistry to support this. Within the context of flat earth theory, "the earth is flat" is not only a correct statement, but the CRUCIALLY correct statement, because if you take this statement not to be correct then you have stopped playing "flat earth theory".
If you don't see that this is obvious, then there is some profound difference between our worldviews.
Another example: I haven't interpreted "for whatever reason" in a pejorative sense -- I just said in my last post what the problem with it is. It is general and doesn't work in your proposed opposition because the specific (non-pejorative, valid) sense was swallowed up by it.
I just cannot follow your reasoning at all. You seem, I am sorry, to be working from absurdly different premises.
I don't think you're "defending the idea that Pluto is a planet". Like I said, what appears to be at stake is defending "the idea of the idea that Pluto is a planet". I have tried to described this in multiple ways and, seeing how it keeps getting ignored, I wonder if it is hitting some blind spot. I am trying to uncover blind spots of my own but with very little success.
I keep getting passed bits of rationalist scripture too. This does worry me because substituting scripture for thought is the kind of thing that leads to people having strange premises and making absurd leaps, and so I cannot shake the suspicion I have wandered into a synagogue without noticing, or something. I am not a Rationalist.
Do you have anything at all to say about the actual planets, like I keep begging for anyone else to please talk about?
I've noticed something I find somewhat concerning and it's that for a lot of people, 'pluto is a planet' has fallen into the stock list of examples for what one might call 'science denialism', along with things like antivaxx, denying the existence of feathered (non-avian) dinosaurs, and flat earthers
there's a sentiment that goes like 'well, sure, you learned in school that the solar system has nine planets, but Science Marches On and we now know it has eight' and while certainly people should not take what they learned in school to be immutable law they should also like. have a concept of the rather significant difference between 'we've learned something new about the world' and 'we've decided to slice up the world in categories along different lines'
slicing up the world into categories is one of the basic operations of human thought and if you do not understand it well enough that you think 'people used to think the earth flat -> now we know better' and 'astronomers used to call pluto a planet -> now they don't' are analogous processes then you fucked up somewhere.
and if you don't think they are analogous, if you understand the difference i am pointing out and think it does not matter to the quest of listing stock examples of people disagreeing with things scientists say, well. you fucked up in a different place, probably.

The grey treepie, also known as the Himalayan treepie, (Dendrocitta formosae) is an Asian treepie, a medium-sized and long-tailed member of the crow family. The species was first described by Robert Swinhoe in 1863. They are widely distributed along the foothills of the Himalayas in the Indian Subcontinent and extending into Indochina, southern mainland China and Taiwan. The populations vary in plumage and several are named as subspecies. #greytreepie #treepie #bird #indianbird #birdpicture #himalayamtreepie #indianphotography #picoftheday #worldpics #worldphotographyday #worldpicture #worldphotographersclub #canonsx740hs #canon #canonusa #canonindia #wild #wildlifephitography https://www.instagram.com/p/CFXZqYUHFbf/?igshid=mbkm23h368sl

Introducing... my NaNo project!
For anyone who might not be aware, National Novel Writing Month (or, NaNoWriMo/NaNo) is a yearly event in which batshit insane writers like myself subject themselves to the ordeal of trying to write a 50k word novel in one month. NaNo starts in November, which means that during the month of October I’ll essentially be using this blog to pregame. Hopefully I’m so lost in the sauce by November that the month just passes in a blur.
Now, without further ado, a barebones explanation of plot.
Our World
Picture this: it’s like the 1600s except in a world adjacent to ours because I hate research and love worldbuilding. There’s probably no magic, and if there IS magic, it’s little magic that has faded and withered from the once grand and ancient power spoken of in myths. Either way, that’s not the point.
The story is set in a belligerent kingdom just a few years after a war of conquest that it (barely) won. The kingdom is a monarchy, with a twist. Power is not passed on to the oldest son our daughter, but to the strongest Heir. An Heir can be a son/daughter of the current monarch, OR a niece or nephew granted “eligibility” by the current monarch. All Heirs have equal status and power (until the time comes when someone has to succeed the throne)
Our Plot
The Seventh Heir to the kingdom, Lady Artemisia, makes no pretense about her ambitions. She’s going  to be the next monarch-- more out of spite and resentment for her disloyal siblings than out of any real desire to rule. But as her opportunity to take power approaches, the world as she understands it begins to unravel. Artemisia’s ship is waylaid by pirates, and she’s taken captive by someone who ought to have been long dead. Their shared past is no comfort to her. Someone has been pulling in favors to get Heirs attacked and killed, and these pirates have good reason to want Artemisia dead.
What the plot summary won’t tell you (but the ao3 tags would)
Dysfunctional family meets royalty au meets pirate au meets friends-to-lovers-to-enemies, featuring lesbians
