Facts that will make you want to visit Meteora Monasteries

Relax, one absolutely does not have to be religious to visit the Meteora Monasteries in Greece. There used to be a period back in time when these sky-high monasteries was accessible only by climbing and, by climbing, I don´t mean stairs! “A Preserved and Protected Monument of Humanity”- thatś exactly how UNESCO charecterizes it.

Once you reach the top youĺl have to admit that this is the best way to enjoy the uniqueness of the surrounding landscape. This World Heritage site will completely blow your mind. Hereś why:

The word Meteora literally means to be ´suspended in air´.

It is one of the handful UNESCO heritage sites that could qualify more than a sinlge category. It enjoys the title under the sections of art and nature.

Among 24, only 6 mountain-top monasteries remain at the peak today.

Staircases to climb up to the monasteries were introduced after 1920ś.

Before that, monks were literally carried up in a basket. Rock climbing was an alternative.

Getting lost is not a chance, just look at the direction in which the alter faces.

Ever thought there would be a ´monk jail´? They have tyhem here.

Here a photograph of the restored Timur Shah Mausoleum set within a public garden adjacent to the Kabul River. One of the largest surviving Islamic monuments in central Kabul, the mausoleum of Timur Shah marks the grave of the son of Ahmad Shah Durrani, who effectively crated the modern state of Afghanistan in the late eighteenth century. The mausoleum was heavily damaged in recent decades, but now restored it stands as one of the most iconic monuments in Kabul and the surrounding park provides much-needed green space in a congested part of the city. Remeber how the ´Bracelet of Anubis´ enabled alex to see the steps to reach Áhm Shere´? One of the bridging locations was the Oasis of Karnak. Yes, you must be familiar with the holy Karnak Temple. But, to know more and the core of the monument, a visit is a must!

Covering an area of 100 hecters, the Krnak Temple enjoys the position of being the world´s second largest temple complex. Set at the bank of Nile, the temple was oraginally known as the ´most sacred places´ (translated Ipet-isut in Egyptian). Make sure you explore the main temples within the vast complex like ones dedicated to the God of ancient Egypt Thebes, Amun, God Montu and Goddess Mut. Get to know the facts:

The construction began 400 years ago and was completed after the following 13 hundred years.
