Hey! Personal jazz enthusiast blog here and saw you interact with my blog a few days back. You've got a really cool blog concept!
Just curious, are you into the history of jazz/lindy? I've been thinking a lot about how 'white' it appears to be as of late. No bad thoughts about your character! I just mean in general. Hope to hear your thoughts! :)
[ OOC:
Hey! Thanks for the compliment and checking out the random blog that probably liked some vintage photos and music posts lol. I genuinely appreciate it.
Next, absolutely no offense taken. The Toni (me) behind this blog is a POC and damn proud of it. <3 Honestly? You're right. There's a lot of discourse about this very thing in the Lindy Hop community because of dancers around the world that are the modern faces of the community. Laura Glaess is a great example. Phenomenal follow, truly innovative and so expressive and retains the spirit and character of traditional vernacular/solo jazz dancing. Pop in "lindy how to" in Youtube and she's always gonna be in the top results.
To be so forreal with you, personally, it doesn't bother me when it comes to the big names in the jazz/lindy world. Y'know why? Because they appreciate the history and roots of the very music they revolve their lives around. And you have awesome big faces in the communities who are BIPOC, like Tim Christopher (who I've danced with, btw, he's fucking insane-- such a clear lead, so smooth, literally effortless for him. He's also insanely encouraging lol) who keep the history alive and educate people.
The white-washing of jazz and swing bothers me when we talk about popular media and more casual members of the two communities that simply don't care enough to learn about the foundations. Which is fucking insane to me. How tf do you get to pop turn variations? Fucking practice the fundamental move of rotations. How do you hit a staccato run that suddenly turns into 3/4? You fucking. Practice normal runs. You need a foundation to build on.
So why should music history be any different?
I'm a bit more forgiving of jazz listeners only, but jazz musicians and serious dancers that say they "love the community"? Yeah nah. Being ignorant but willing to learn is one thing. Simply not caring is another. Imo it says a lot about a person, no matter how good they are.
(Keep in mind, my blog is still an infant lol. I'm curating a lot more behind the scenes to get it to the place I want it to be at.)
My aim with this blog definitely isn't to white-wash the very communities I adore/call home. Yes, Pip is white, but she's a talented musician who knows about the men and women that paved the way for her to be where she is. They were Black, dancing in the Savoy Ballroom, fueling the Harlem Renaissance and facing oppression and ridicule for it the whole time.
This is a role play blog and I don't want to be annoying lol BUT I have every intention of retaining the very heart and soul of jazz through appreciation, analysis and teaching/education posts. If you decide to stick around, those posts will be tagged under "music ed".
Thank you thank you thank you for this insightful question. I'm actually pretty pleased to know someone took a look at my blog and despite it being for role play decided to ask if I really understood where all this came from.
You're kickass for that, deadass. Thank you. ]
#answered#music ed#damn why are the coolest cats around finding me? this question made my whole goddam morning man...

more info, via a couple of reviews:
"Is this the best, most exhilarating, most close-to-perpetual dancing ever to grace the Goodspeed Opera House stage?
It certainly could be.
The new stage adaptation of “Summer Stock” at the East Haddam theater has plenty to recommend it in terms of the canny script and the hummable songs. But it’s the dancing that leaves the biggest impression.
The show is jam-packed with choreography from Donna Feore, who also directs, that is thrillingly executed by the cast.
We’re talking: Gravity-defying kicks. Head-spinning turns. Male dancers lifting and tossing and catching the female ones. It runs the gamut from Cossack-dance athleticism to soft shoe grace, tap precision to Lindy hop energy.
How the cast manages to sing after executing these (literally) breathtaking numbers, I have no idea.
And how do they make it through two performances on some days? Amazing.
Also amazing: the fact that they do all this on Goodspeed’s small stage without making the space feel cramped.
So, yes, the dancing is phenomenal. But there’s more to the show than that.
This stage version of “Summer Stock” — which is enjoying its world premiere at Goodspeed — is inspired by the 1950 MGM movie starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. Writer Cheri Steinkellner, though, has reimagined the piece in many ways, making it better, stronger and propelled by a more modern sensibility. (Steinkellner’s writing credits range from “Cheers” to the Broadway adaptation of “Sister Act.”)
The foundational story, though, remains the same: A no-nonsense young woman named Jane is trying to save her family farm. Her actress sister (named Gloria in the version at Goodspeed) brings her compatriots to the farm to rehearse a show. Jane first spars with and then starts falling for Gloria’s beau Joe, the production’s director.
Steinkellner has also changed up the score, to great effect. While some tunes from the movie remain, she has pulled others that are in the public domain (such as “Accentuate the Positive,” “Paper Moon” and “It Had to Be You”), and she has woven them perfectly into various plot points and important emotional moments.
As director, Feore makes sure the whole enterprise has a dynamic spirit. It’s a story and a production that brims with optimism and cheerfulness.
Leading the cast is Corbin Bleu, who became famous with his work in “High School Musical” and has gone on to star in several Broadway shows, as Joe. Bleu is a true, and truly talented, triple-threat. He has a warm, welcoming presence as an actor; he also brings an authority to Joe so you believe he’s someone the actors respect and will follow. Bleu’s singing is strong and lustrous, and his dancing — particularly his tremendous tap ability — is … wow.
Arguably the biggest scene-stealer here is Veanne Cox, as the wealthy, snooty owner of huge property surrounding Jane’s. The way she trills dialogue can turn anything into a punchline. She can wave her arms about as her character repeats “l’amour” and generate audience laughs. When her character falls for the egoistic actor Montgomery Leach (played by J. Anthony Crane with Barrymore flair), Cox burbles with girlish romantic giddiness.
Danielle Wade does her own take on the Judy Garland role. She gives Jane a swagger and a tough façade that reveals a more human self during the course of the story. Wade’s most important feature is her voice, which is potent whether she’s finessing a ballad or powering through a big number. While she can’t compete with Garland’s renowned version of “Get Happy” (who could?), Wade does a good job in the number — choreographed and costumed in an homage to the original — that serves as the culmination of the production.
Arianna Rosario gets to play an interesting arc at Gloria. At first, Gloria seems to be a blithe, self-centered actress, but she later shows that she is quite the problem-solving producer. Rosario makes the transformation believable, as if Gloria is finally letting her real self come through.
The scenic design by Wilson Chin suggests the various elements of a Connecticut River Valley farm in the 1950s while still allowing room for the cast to burst into all of those big dance numbers. And the costume design by Tina McCartney provides a fun and functional take on country clothing of the era.
I will say that the second act could be tightened up (we don’t need to see so many beats of the rehearsal process), but, in total, this “Summer Stock” is sensational." [source]
(hooray for most directly explaining gloria's overall arc)
and the next review:
"A throwback to the golden age of Broadway and movie musicals, "Summer Stock" is a timeless, inspiring song-and-dance tale of good deeds, fairy tale showbiz, classic romance and backstage intrigue played out to such dazzling effect, you want to freeze frame it, take it home with you and watch it over and over again for pure fun and a let's-put-a-smile-on-your-face endorsement. This is Goodspeed Musicals at its best - old-fashioned musical entertainment designed to deliver by the bucket's load, stir the senses, rhythmically intoxicate you and dance up a continual storm of good cheer that's guaranteed to leave you breathless.
Animated. Airborne. Magical. Sweet-natured. Fresh-faced. Dance happy. It's all here, wrapped up in shiny gold ribbons and signature colors that complement and complete the picture with a technicolor flourish, a big bang and an internal logic that flows with appropriate style, stamina, full command and intent.
Adapted to the stage by Cheri Steinkellner, "Summer Stock" replays that popular let's- put-on-a-show conceit where everything rests of the big opening night, the box-office intake, the big kiss between the leading man and the leading lady and how a complete unknown saves the day right before the final fadeout. Here, struggling Connecticut farmer Jane Falbury decides to let her actress sister Abigail and her actor friends from New York use the family barn as a rehearsal space for their brand-new Broadway bound musical in exchange for doing the daily farm chores to raise enough money to keep the business from going completely under. One slight problem. During rehearsals, Jane finds herself falling for the show's handsome director, Joe Ross, who, happens to be engaged to the show's leading lady - her sister Abigail.
Staging "Summer Stock," director Donna Feore ("Chicago," "Billy Elliot," "A Chorus Line"), who doubles as choreographer, creates a loveable, intoxicating show that reels you in, grabs hold of you until the final curtain and lets you fall in love with every little detail, surprise, plot twist, joke, visual gag, one-liner and tilt of her jolly agenda while she articulates every element of this musical story with thrust, warmth, spin and splendid articulation. Directorially, she pulls it off spectacularly. No wrong moves here as "Summer Stock" catches fire with a spark, a gusto, a shine and a 1950s mentality infused with plenty of imagination, originality, style and flair. More importantly, the production never loses sight of its origins, its functional plotting and its love of musicals of yesteryear despite well-intentioned doses of kitsch, takeaway humor, giddy backchat and story arcs right out of the MGM library of backlot moviemaking. Feore, free spirit that she is, fuels the musical with a sharpened wit and sentiment that works especially well as does her decision to let "Summer Stock" remain rooted in the period from whence it came in terms of staging, development, expression and interaction.
Moving from screen to stage," "Summer Stock" retains only four songs from the 1950 MGM musical. The addition of several new songs to the original version of the score turns the two-act musical into more of a showstopping event and adds clarity, luster and vintage spin to its already proven material, its let's launch into another song and dance routine blueprint and its firm grasp on characterization, story evolution and its happily ever after conclusion. At Goodspeed, there are 28 important, recognizable, smartly placed musical numbers. They are: "Get Happy," "Happy Days Are Here Again/I Want to Be Happy," "Accentuate the Positive," "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows," "Always," "Always (reprise)," "It's Only a Paper Moon," "The Best Things in Life Are Free," "Dig for Your Dinner," "Me and My Shadow," "Howdy Neighbor, Happy Harvest," "Red Hot Mama," " 'Til We Meet Again," "You Wonderful You," "June Night," "Some of These Days," "Joe's Dance," "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows (reprise)," "It All Depends on You," "Always (reprise)," "Everybody Step," "Lucky Day," "How Ya Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm," "Hinky-Dinky Parlez Vouz," "It Had to Be You," "Get Happy (reprise)" and "You Wonderful You (Finale)."
Musical director Adam Souza ("42nd Street," "Cabaret," "Next to Normal," "A Grand Night for Singing," "Because of Winn Dixie," "Rags") grabs hold of the "Summer Stock" score and allows it to breathe, gesticulate, excite, envelop and rhapsodize with the golden age sentimentality of MGM movie musicals and the timeless, larger-than-life spirit of old Broadway. Here, every song matters. Every song is important. Every song travels down memory lane. Every song is tuned to the max with sweet, centered, warm-heartedness. Every song fulfills its intended purpose. All of this is complemented by the strong, flavorful sound of Souza's orchestral team, all of whom share his tremendous sense of theatricality, musical interlude, impassioned communication and delight of the actual musical itself. They are: David Uhl (bass), Sal Ranniello (percussion), Liz Baker Smith (reed 1), Andrew Studenski (reed II), Travis Higgins III (trumpet) and Matthew Russo (trombone). As with other Goodspeed musicals, Souza doubles as conductor and keyboardist. As "Summer Stock" zings and pops, pretty music every song unfolds with a contagious orchestral musical glow, matched by the splendid musicality of the entire cast who address the catchy, homespun music and lyrics with perfect harmony, rhythm, phrasing and nostalgic commitment. These elements heighten the on-stage mode of the production, its progression from Act I to Act II, its send offs, its pastiche and its electrifying, barn-raising influence and thwack.
As with any big stage musical, choreography is key to a production's success, its fluidity of form, its artistic expression and its accompanying dance routines. Here, Feore, as choreographer, gives "Summer Stock" a highly personal touch of invigoration and speedy excitement that is tipped and generated with wonderfully elongated inspiration, stamina and determination. This is star quality choreography that peaks, shines and tilts with clever build ups, catchy dance steps and bold, concentrated rhythms, moves and beats that joyfully celebrate 1950's musicals in all their technicolor glory. As storyteller and dance interpreter, she brings great dimension and scope to the piece using techniques, styles, descriptions and an enriched canvas of thoughts and ideas that make their mark most engagingly. Everything that happens on the Goodspeed Musicals stage has been beautifully blocked, rehearsed and staged with such thrust and individuality, no two dance numbers are alike. In fact, once "Summer Stock" catches fire, there's no stopping it. Creating a freshly minted fusion of moods, tableaus, lifts, twirls and swirls, Feore pays homage to the actual vintage look and mindset of the musical, its dance-friendly art form and its free-flowing feel of excitement and exhilaration. Hands pop. Arms move heavenward. Dancers smile and glisten as they passionately ignite into joyful visions of sweetness, passion, frenzy and syncopation. Everyone is lost in the moment illustrating the traditions, the conscience and the power of musical theatre, giving and getting the most out of Feore's phenomenal, ovation-worthy choreography. Trained, drilled and confident, they each get a chance to shine - and shine they do - all making strong impressions that will live long in memory.
Making his Goodspeed Musicals debut, Corbin Bleu, as Joe Ross, a character originated by Gene Kelly in the 1950 film version, creates a "Wow!" song-and-dance-man factor chock full of charm, personality, self-confidence and full-beam, champagne delightness that astounds, cajoles and sparkles with leading man gait and luxury like no other. No matter what he does, he's a proverbial triple-threat (i.e., a player who excels at acting, singing and dancing) who makes everything that happens on stage feel fresh, spontaneous, real, raw and very much in the moment. It's in his eyes. It's in his moves. It's in his expressions. Exhibiting a sweet, contagious rapport that extends far beyond the footlights, it's the performance of the year and one that Bleu exudes with a Gene Kelly/Fred Astaire aura of showbiz savvy, knockabout whimsy, graceful athleticism and sterling encapsulation. "Joe's Dance," a solo dance number in Act II performed by Bleu only furthers that notion.
In the role of Jane Falbury, a role made famous by Judy Garland in the original "Summer Stock" MGM musical, Danielle Wade lights up the Goodspeed Musicals stage with a breezy, intuitive musical comedy performance of real warmth and spirit that is a constant joy to watch. Veanne Cox, cast in the role of the wickedly devious Connecticut farming magnate Margaret Wingate, is jaw-dropping brilliant, using humor, music, dance and melodrama in divinely daft and glorious ways that prompt applause and laughter whenever she's in the limelight. It's a scene-stealing performance so seamlessly entrenched in glee and fiery abandon, Cox, would be the ideal choice to play narcissistic Broadway diva Dee Dee Allen in the 2024 summer presentation of "The Prom" at Playhouse in Park in West Hartford. I'll personally deliver the contract. Other memorable performances are delivered by Arianna Rosario (Gloria Falbury), Stephen Lee Anderson (Henry "Pop" Falbury), Gilbert L. Bailey II (Phil Filmore), Will Roland (Orville Wingate) and J. Anthony Crane (Montgomery Leach). A musical escape brimming with delightful songs, engaging performances and full-beam dance numbers, "Summer Stock" is not only a bubbly tonic for theatergoers of all ages, but one that kicks nostalgia into high gear with uncomplicated bliss, fizz and vintage sparkle. It sings. It dances. It pops. It dazzles. Like "42nd Street" which played Goodspeed Musicals last season, it overflows with Kelly/Astaire lightness, punch and precision, sunny vibes and well-played exactitude. The energy displayed here is fast and furious with first-night exhilaration and thrill paired especially well with Corbin Bleu's charming star turn, Danielle Wade's joyous "Get Happy" abandon and Veanne Cox's well-prepped, icy cool villain. This is musical theatre of the highest order - infectious, irresistible, glorious. Its leave-your-troubles-at-the-door/Let's-put-on-a-show mentality accelerates with sparkle and cherry pie goodness. And boy, do we need it now!" [source]
(the reference to jane's sister abigail uses the film's names: abigail becomes gloria in this production, which is the name of abigail's actor in the film, which also mirrors how the role of herb is now phil, also the name of herb's actor in the film)
(also shoutout to providing A Full, Chronological List Of Songs. noting that according to another interview, intermission would be between "you wonderful you" and "june night")

Setting- Writing Workshop with Betts Week 3
@bettsfic ask us to figure out a place we love and make three public + private facts.
NON-FICTION- I thought of private memories as a child to a place I love. Can you figure out the place or why it is loved, across time?
A common night, in an old hot summer. A boy holds his mother's hand, on an overpass to trees. The boy saw moonlight on the Harlem Strait, a cool breeze hit his smiling face. His mother snapped her fingers, shaking her head side to side, and the boy couldn't recognize why. Then, he heard trees speak like happy piano keys, and his smile widened. Now among the trees, he saw members of his people: sitting down on the grass, relaxed, drinking, smoking, dreaming. The trees were still speaking, and the boy's mother said: "That is Billy Taylor, I wish I knew how it would feel to be free."
And the boy side his mother saw his father sitting past the trees, on chairs that look like funny creatures with skin full of pebbles in varying colors. They all sat. The boy's parents kissed, or talked, or looked at him playing around, like loving spouses do. A musical stage at the heart of this space between the trees was visible. The music was different now. His father said:" Miles, miles, yeah, so what"
The boy watched his father and decided to snap his fingers too.
"Yeah, yeah": said the boy. His mother watched them both and smiled. Only nine minutes seem an eternity: in the trees, amidst the broken cool breeze, alongside your people; they're relaxing, the afros shimmying, bald headed sisters smiling, everybody you see emitting a quiet vibe some call laughing, in the dark. While the boy was smiling, eyes closed, his parents talked. And, the father waited with personal items while the boy side mom got codfish. The boy waited: all day, all week, all month, all year, for this. The codfish was at the side, where the vendors reside. The trees spoke a song with improvisations from crickets the boy cognized, but whose name he didn't remember. Maybe not from youthful carefree, but the smell that filled the walk side his mother with ease. They reached the codfish, bought some, ate a little, returned to the boy's father, and enjoyed the remaining evening. And many more evenings the boy would have, until… no more. No violence or raptures caused said end. Harlem plus all in it moved on, which time demand everywhere. And now the former boy, a common man living in a place only the same in name, hold in his soul: the smell of codfish from a street vendor, the moon light on the Harlem Strait, the sounds of Jazz in everything, the love his parents reared in him, to goals far from Grant's tomb or the trees about it. For his home hasn't moved on in his heart. His home will always be the Harlem of yore.
FICTION- Harlem is where the Harlem Lindy hop, that most people view as the sole Lindy hop dance comes from. This is part of the fictional world I started from the first workshop.
READ IT The Lindy Flops from Richard Murray by HDdeviant on DeviantArt
POEM- use public knowledge- first Black representative of NYC was from Harlem of yore
Not the first Not the only But what could had been
Like the man A preacher man The first Black council
Communal An advocate Wasted in D.C.
Imagine If he mayor What New York would be
For all folk Not just for Blacks The hope could had been
Not the first Not the only But what could had been
EXPERIMENTAL - View from a honeysuckle tree that grew in the Harlem of yore
Grow Yes slow From the low Concrete I sew My flowers scent, tow The humans at the bow Said words through seasons I know
Again, and again, the poem flows in my veins. IT is my only companion among the sensations that live by me. The cold one I slowly eat through is unresponsive, crude. The little starlight ones, landing on me, seem to enjoy my company. Though they never reply to me. The sparkles at my roots. Help nourish me but I never hear them speak, just an electric chattering. Only all types of sensations about me. The wildest frightens me. Zipping by in horde like numbers. How do my flowers survive from my limbs, exposed to such comings and goings? But I know my flowers do and I too survive. And in my age, I fear not the sudden death, that is inevitable among those such as me. I listen to my cyclic poem, the only thing that makes me not completely alone.

Ooh, how about [World Lindy Hop Day] and [Sugar Cookie Day] for Yoimiya and Sabo? :]
thank you for the ask lovely Slep !! <3
World Lindy Hop Day - Can either of you dance? Do you like to dance together?
About Yoimiya. Yoimiya loooves to just let herself go when she dances, and I was more than happy to discover that. The first time we danced together was at a festival, her fireworks were finishing when the music started and she was one of the few people who stayed at the perfect place to watch them. When they really ended, she still kept admiring the sky with a smile, and I know she already felt happy there but I really wanted her to enjoy the festival to the fullest so I invited her to come dance with me, even if we had never done so before. It was super fun and we have started to do little dances at random moments since then<3
Sugar Cookie Day - Can either of you cook or bake, or can you not be trusted in the kitchen? Do you like to make anything together?
About Sabo. Listen, he's a better cook than I, and that's not something hard to become because I'm the most similar to a kitchen failure you'll find xD. I swear I try not to be like that and I get motivated by reading recipes, but it's a fact that I cannot do it alone, at least for the first times. Sabo has a better control when cooking than when baking, so both of us become a little bit of a mess when we try to make something sweet. It's worth it though, we laugh a lot and we get to see others' expressions when we make them try out what we baked. I admire how he makes cooking seem so easy when it's not, and he accepts my help and knows how to explain what I need to do so I can feel useful and trusted in the kitchen, he's a sweetheart I swear-

HELP ily and also ALL of the odd holiday asks for mims. all of them. unless you feel like skipping some. spins around and blows you up with my mind
MY FUCKIN PANCAKES- ok ok askies time
National Step In The Puddle And Splash Your Friends Day - How mischevious is your F/O? You? How do you bounce off each other? // Mims can be a bit sneaksy when he wants to. He learned it from Hylte :]. Hylte, however, is the king of mischief and other such prankeries. They live for the bit, they die by the bit. And they bounce off each other pretty well! Made for each other :]
Plan A Vacation Day - What is you and your F/O's dream vacation? // They actually take their ideal vacation after the death broadcasts incident- isolated cabin in Canada, a week off to do whatever the fuck. They probably take the vacation semi-regularly enough for there to be a vacation cabin built on Earth.
National Goof Off Day - What do you two like to do together to destress? // I'm gonna level with you? I can't say it here.
National Mad Hatter Day - Do you have any utterly incomprehensible inside jokes? Care to share them? // Not incomprehensible, but I'm still attached to 15 minutes. That's such a good thing...sighs so softly and full of want.
Have A Bad Day Day - What do you do to cheer each other up when you're feeling down? // Just being around the other is enough most of the time, along with "yes, and"ing each other. It's usually for silly things, and having silly arguments like not being able to play music because they both know the music will be objectively unlistenable. Also, something I can't say here.
Answer Your Cat's Questions Day - How is your F/O with animals? Do you have any pets? // Mims doubles as a pet I think /j
World Lindy Hop Day - Can either of you dance? Do you like to dance together? // Oh these gay fuckers love dancing together. It's one of the things they do to help with Hylte's physical therapy after the body transference.
Say Something Nice Day - What are your favorite qualities about each other? // A quote from 'Who Framed Rodger Rabbit' comes to mind. When asked why Hylte married Mims, they'll reply "Because he makes me laugh."
World Kissing Day - How good of a kisser is your F/O? How open are they with their affection? You? // Minimus is a rather closed off man, in public and kind of in private, but he's a very good kisser. Hylte tends to be more open about the physical side of their affection, and gets easily flustered when anything more subtle comes up. Like in this piece here, they get flustered to the point of yelling and short circuiting by one small gesture.
Sugar Cookie Day - Can either of you cook or bake, or can you not be trusted in the kitchen? Do you like to make anything together? // Mims makes a hobby out of baking bread, even if he can't eat it, and Hylte is a whiz in the kitchen making food-like energon. Sometimes they work together ot make really pretty desserts.
Embrace Your Geekness Day - Gush about your F/O's weird quirks or unconventional interests. // He likes reading...wah. He's such a neeeerd nerd nerd nerd he likes reading and chess and he's a gun nut too and he likes strategy and and and. he likes hylte...explodes
Lazy Day - What do you like to do on a lazy day? // Lay together and read.
Love Note Day - Do you write each other love letters or notes? What do they say? // Hylte and Mims used to write each other all the time during his tenure on the LL. Every message was a silent love letter, no matter the contents. They probably leave sticky notes around the house reminding each other how much they mean to each other, because neither of them are really the type to say it out loud often.

Upstairs function room, LifeCare Edinburgh (2024). On a warm Saturday in Spring, I enjoyed a day of Balboa classes here. Lindy is for life, though.

Good Person (?)
I’m fully aware that deep down, I still lack depth in my character. Beginning to lose count without thinking about it, it’s now 2 decades since I forced a change my own personality, learning not to be an arrogant annoying unproductive piece of society’s leeching.. anyway, I’d like to think that I have come a very long way.
Removing the arrogance trait (which itself took several years) had left a massive hole in my personality. Then around 2014/15, I begun actively forcing myself to interact with others in the real world. Re-learning how to interact with fellow humans in the flesh. I had lots to learn, and for a time, kept discovering more flaws to fix.
I was blessed to have came across Lindy Hop, eventually getting to experience different dances under the Swing Dance umbrella. The associated history and ethos, and boundaries employed by the communities has taught me a lot more than what on the original road map.
I think the few months before Covid when I finally got a functional grasp of boundaries between people was the end of what was on that map.
Of course, the learning never stopped. I wasn't happy, constantly thinking how I could be a better person. Often, I felt I had reached my potential of who / what I could be.
Depression was already constantly demanding the end be nigh, then while Covid was torturing humanity, I had the pleasure of having some ribs removed along with a lottery tumour for what eventually turned out to be a pointless exercise.
(Actually, I think the surgery also gave me and elevated heart rate and high blood pressure, neither of which was something I had expected)
After 3+ years of recovery, chronic surgical pain looks as though it's here to stay, and potentially a number of decades reduced in lifespan. Not that anyone would understand, but I am bitter how much I've aged in appearance over the last few years.
2024 venue of Edinbop's Balboa Brunch.
Recently, I learnt what letting go (/ not picking up to start with) really feels like. Not that I could practice it 100% of the time.
But, every now and then, I still can’t shake how boring or plain my character is, beyond the surface. I work, I dance, I travel to dance, I like to dine, still gaming casually, read Korean manga on my own.. I am more at peace with who I am, but that hunger for more isn't going away.
I want to be more. I want to be more. Be better. Be more. This is not enough.

241: Merle Travis // The Best of Merle Travis
The Best of Merle Travis Merle Travis 1967, Capitol
Like his contemporary Les Paul, Merle Travis’s influence as a guitar player tends to overshadow his recording career (he’s one of the few alongside Maybelle Carter and Elizabeth Cotten with a style of picking that bears his name), but The Best of Merle Travis makes a fine case for rediscovering his catalogue. His 1947 Folk Songs of the Hills is generally considered to be the first “concept album” in country music, and it remains the natural non-compilation starting point for his music: four traditional songs and four Travis originals depicting Kentucky working life hammering railroad spikes and delving for coal. There weren’t many guitarists in the country world with the kind of dash and sizzle Travis shows off on his version of “John Henry,” while his bluesy “Nine Pound Hammer” highlights his amiable voice, one of the least affected (and thereby least aggressively dated) of his era.
youtube
Folk Songs of the Hills’ replay value is a little dinged by the choice to have Travis provide a spoken introduction to each song, and said intros are preserved on the five of its songs found here, but the repetition’s broken up a little by interspersing them with other cuts from his late ‘40s hey day. For those who’ve only listened to Merle’s folk side, the songs may come as a surprise, as they are perky ragtime/Western swing of the sort that once dominated the charts, but is now predominantly sung by nerd women on the lindy hop side of the swing/burlesque binary. They’re lightweight fluff, but fun fluff nonetheless, particularly “Sweet Temptation” and “Steel Guitar Rag.”
The Best of Merle Travis omits the many excellent songs he recorded after 1950, and interested listeners shouldn’t stop here. Still, the songs you’ll find yourself returning to most are those working man’s folk tunes that made his legend. There simply isn’t a better country song than his astonishing original “Dark as a Dungeon,” an instant standard as elemental as the black rock that shortened so many lives in his native Muhlenberg County, nor a better rendition out of thousands than his take on the standard “I Am a Pilgrim.”
