Oreilles Pointues, a Feral Cat

Part 2

I had to name the cat as I filled out paper work at SpayNation, a service for feral cats and their would-be owners. Most of my readers know I’m a lover of the French language, especially our local Cajun vernacular. I named it Oreilles Pointues, French for pointed ears.

The vet phoned me later during the day to say that he had moved through the surgery fine and that there were no major concerns other than skin issues; that I already knew just by looking at Oreilles Pointues. For cat lovers you know how intense cat skin issues are. Our Martha, 18 years old cat who passed last year had skin issues that were never truly resolved. So looks like I’m in for another run with cat skin issues.

Hopefully, Oreilles, and the vet says he is a male young adult cat, adopts us and stays around our place. it’s his decision now; I’ve done my part. I’d love for him to join our merry band of feline loves here at Ray Dean, at least now I know he won’t be part of the problem of too many unloved cats without homes. And he won’t be creating new kitties. The vet said other than the issues I’ve already stated, in addition being malnourished and dehydrated, he should be fine! I can pick him up in the morning.

Part 3

I picked up Oreilles Pointues this morning; and he looked rested, much calmer and a bit more alert to his surroundings. In a bit I’ll let him go; hopefully he chooses us. I’d love nothing better than to have him join our lives here on the farm as one of our working cats, hunting and feeding off the bounty and goodness on the prairie.

Baltimore County Animal Services currently has almost 40 dogs available for adoption in the shelter. We have more dogs available than kennels in our adoptable room, with more dogs coming in or becoming available throughout the day. We are over capacity and desperately need adopters or rescues to help. All of these dogs are available for rescue or adoption immediately. We are open 12-5 today for adoptions, and 12-3 tomorrow.

All of the dogs are medium-large size, but of all ages (6 month-9 years), weights (28 pounds-75 pounds) and energy levels. All of our kennels are quickly filling up. We’re hopeful someone is still looking to add a furry family member before the holidays and will give our dogs a chance to be their best friend fur-ever! Any courtesy posts for our dogs in need are greatly appreciated! Who remembers Almeda wildfire survivor Big Foot⁉️ Rescued and trapped by wildfire search team Caylen Kelsey & @teamferalcats Amanda Linnehan, Big Foot was transferred to Petals-4-Paws community cat program, Cherub's Cottage, this past June. Cherub's Cottage, a collaborative of committed local rescues, trappers and feeders, has become a haven for challenging, un-socialized and/or severely feral cats and kittens that must be relocated. We are honored that Big Foot has bestowed his trust upon us, and so happy to announce he has successfully transitioned to being one of P4P's permanent working cat residents. His transition to freedom and independence has strengthened his trust of the human experience, so much so that he dilly dalleys and lingers wherever we are outside, acting uninterested in us or what we're doing, all the while strategically positioning himself to never lose sight of us! Folks, this is a process from start to finish, feeding, trapping, medically vetting - due to the pandemic and worker shortage, very few local Veterinarians are able and willing to sedate for triage, sterilization - a minimum 1-2 month's wait, and, finally, relocation. The process is a test of patience and compassion, and one of the most rewarding experiences. Done correctly, it can take a minimum of 6 months + minimum 3 months relocation follow-up - 3 out of 13 of the untouchables we have rehabbed took 12(+) months. P4P is grateful to organizations that are able to facilitate high volume rescues and meet high volume needs, their work allows us to dedicate our time to those kitties who otherwise may never be visible to the public. By relocating the kittens as they ween to organizations with more resources and demand, each one of these special babes get the best possible chance for a better Life.
