We had -25 to -40 degrees Celsius weather outside today and frequent power outages all day long today. So it's a great excuse to stay inside and play board games! I am so thrilled we played 2 games of #WreckRaiders. This is a really fantastic worker placement, dice and set collection game about diving for treasure on the seafloor. Designed by 2 Toronto-ians and published by a Canadian company that produces high-quality, fun games, KTBG. Perfect for families! Highly, highly recommend! #WorkerPlacementGames #games #BoardGames #FamilyGames #Toronto #diving #GameDay #KTBG #JoshCappel #TimWKBrown #WreckRaiders https://www.instagram.com/p/CoQUceKP_nm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

If you’re into awesomeness, or small box solo games, there’s a pretty snazzy looking worker placement game on TheGameCrafter.com that’s currently selling for $20 through a crowd-sale that’s ALMOST over. Century: Spice Road Second Chance Carcassonne Twice as Clever Octodice Architects of the West Kingdom Quacks of Quedlinburg
Game of the Month: Second Chance
We bought Second Chance at UK Games Expo last year and this was only the second time we have played it, I guess you could say we were giving it a Second Chance…. See what I did there.
Anyway this game was one of the many Roll and Write games we bought at Expo. If you like Tetris then you are going to love this game.
You each have a blank square grid then each in turn two cards are revealed from the stack, each card has a Tetris style shape on them, you then have to draw one of these shapes in your grid, trying to fill as much of the square as possible. If you can't put the shape into your square then you get a Second Chance to draw another card, if this shape can't be placed then you are out of the game.
Unlike Tetris there are only a certain number of each shape so you have to be careful when placing your shapes and trying to remember if certain shapes have already been revealed.
In Second Chance, each player starts with a 9×9 grid that they want to fill as completely as possible. To begin the game, everyone receives a different card with a starting tile and marks off its spaces on their grid. Every turn, two puzzle tile cards are revealed, and each player chooses one of them, then marks off squares on their personal grid that match the shape of the image shown on their chosen card. Multiple players can choose the same card. If a player cannot fit either revealed shape into their grid, they get a second chance and reveal one card from the deck just for them. If they can fit this shape in their grid, they do continue normally next round; otherwise they are eliminated from play. The game ends when all players have been eliminated, the deck of puzzle cards has run out, or a player has completely filled their grid. If someone has filled their grid, they win. If all players have been eliminated or the deck ran out of cards, then whoever has the fewest empty spaces wins.

I love finding new first-player/current-player replacement pieces for my games. This one replaced the cardboard elephant that came with the game, Rajas of the Ganges and was always coming apart several times per game. Rajas is a really great worker placement game that actually is a race game. Players are racing to build their estates with buildings, wealth and game. Rajas of the Ganges is a brilliant mix of mechanisms, with players placing workers using dice colors and/or pip numbers for placement (not quite a dice placement game but kindof) and a very clever tile placement mechanism on individual player boards to collect resources. Players are collecting 2 different points in the game: Wealth and Fame are tracked from opposite ends of the same track and when the a player's two point token cross each other it triggers the end of the game. A Karma track let's players manipulate dice and the tiles give players markets that provide wealth and buildings that provide fame. If all that sounds really hard and complicated - think again. The game is very easy to learn, with mechanisms that just make sense and for together easily and elegantly. And the whole satisfying experience can be played in 45 to 75 minutes depending on player count. If I had to find something that I wasn't thrilled about, its that I often find the game is really exciting and tense right up until the very end where it sometimes feels like it ends abruptly. But that is probably because I've never won this game, so the ending always seems to come a few turns too early for me. 😁😆🤣 A very fun and interesting mix of mechanisms and decisions. Very highly recommended! #BoardGame #gaming #games #WorkerPlacementGame #FirstPlayer #BoardGameImprovements #elephant #TilePlacement #race #India #DicePlacement #TabletopGames #BoardGameBits #BoardGamePieces #token #FirstPlayerToken #CurrentPlayerMarker #GameRecommendations #RajasOfTheGanges https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckw_lYMtyXT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ecos: First Continent Magic The Gathering - Commander New Frontiers Roll for the Galaxy Wingspan
Game of the Month: Ecos: First Continent
This is the only new game that we played this month. It's a game that we have been looking to play for a few weeks now so it was fortunate that a member of our Tuesday night gaming group had purchased it. We compared it to a mix of Terraforming Mars and Bingo. In the terms that you have your own cards that you put cubes on then you can use the card a number of times depending on if you complete the requirements. This then enables you to place things on the Continent. The bingo element is that a person draws tokens from a bag and depending on what is drawn you can play cubes on your cards, like crossing off numbers in Bingo.
I really liked this game even though I wasn't that good at it. Any game that included animals is good for me. I would like to play it again to see if I can fit a strategy into it.
What if the formation of Earth had gone differently? In Ecos: First Continent, players are forces of nature moulding the planet, but with competing visions of its grandeur. You have the chance to create a part of the world, similar but different to the one we know. Which landscapes, habitats, and species thrive will be up to you. Gameplay in Ecos is simultaneous. Each round, one player reveals element tokens from the element bag, giving all players the opportunity to complete a card from their tableau and shape the continent to their own purpose. Elements that cannot be used can be converted into energy cubes or additional cards in hand or they can be added to your tableau to give you greater options as the game evolves. Mountain ranges, jungle, rivers, seas, islands and savanna, each with their own fauna, all lie within the scope of the players' options.
