WHAT'S GOING ON IN SPAIN AND HOW YOU CAN HELP even if you live in a different country
Please read!!
Tumblr media
Since October 29, Spain has been going through one of the worst flash floods of this century. The Community of Valencia has been the most affected, but the cold drop also passed through the south-west and is moving now to the north-east.
So far, 211 bodies have been found, and more than 2000 people are still missing. Most fatalities are from Valencia, entire towns are ravaged and isolated as they don't have electricity and the roads have been destroyed. A lot of people has lost their home, more than 15k homes don't have eletricity and they are in need of food, water and hygienic products
The reason Valencia was the most affected is because, despite given a warning 5 days before from the AEMET (Spain's official meteorological agency) of the possible mass floodings due to the cold drop, and the same morning of the catastrophe, it's authorities didn't warn it's people. Valencia's government waited 12h after the last warning from the AEMET (and it's president even said it would subside 2h before the floodings) before declaring the red alert, at 8pm. By then, many people was already caught in the flood while going or coming back from work.
Although politicians must be accountable, our priority is to help those in need, most which have lost their house, belongings and means to live. Because of this, here are some fundraisers and non-profits you can donate to help both people and animals that have been affected (these are from the thread I've just posted, but I'll add more if I find them!):
Horta Sud is a county in Valencia that has been the most affected by the floodings. People are leaving their houses because they're scared of the infrastructure getting damaged and even walking by foot to Valencia capital to get food.
Letur (Albacete) is a town that has been destroyed by the floods. You can help rebuild it by donating to this gofundme that's directly coordinated with the town hall.
Hambre Cero is a Spanish food bank non-profit that was founded after the earthquakes in Indonesia. They're currently active in Palestine and Lebanon but they'll also be giving food to those who need it in Spain.
El Refugio de María a dog shelter in Sueca (Valencia), is completely flooded, leaving the dogs visibly distressed and without a proper place to sleep. You can donate to their PayPal: [email protected]
Protectora San Antón is a shelter for cats and dogs in Jerez de la Frontera. It's flooded and the animals don't have a comfortable place to sleep in. If you live in Spain you can bizum them @ 635011715 If not, PayPal [email protected]
Help Sara and her family rebuild their home in Valencia.
Refugio Minipow was home to 50 rabbits and guinea pigs. Thankfully, the owners were able to move all the animals to their homes and those of their neighbors, though the shelter itself has been destroyed right after recent renovations. They accept help through PayPal, Bizum or a transference to their bank account.
Una copa por Valencia ("a drink to Valencia") is a campaign organized by Spanish influencer David Aliagas. The idea behind it is to donate the amount of money you would spend on drinks on a night out. He'll be joining effort with local non-profits.
Help the people of Mira (Cuenca) rebuild their hometown.
This group of artists is giving away drawings to people who donate at least 5€ to any of the fundraisers listed in the thread!!!
Tumblr media
You can donate to Valencia's food bank by making a transfer to this bank account: ES86 2100 2806 6402 0009 8998
Tumblr media
Thread of artists that are accepting comissions for Valencia:
Tumblr media
This artist has been directed by the floodings. He just opened emergency comissions
Tumblr media
I'll add more fundraising campaigns I find on Twitter/Bluesky, but until then, please consider helping in any way you can! Even if it's just by sharing!

Good News - May 15-21
Like these weekly compilations? Support me on Ko-fi! Also, if you tip me on Ko-fi, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week - almost double the content!
1. Translocation of 2,000 rhinos in Africa gets underway in “one of the most audacious conservation efforts of modern times”
Tumblr media
“The 2,000 rhinos - more than are currently found in any single wild location in Africa - represent around 12-15% of the continent’s remaining white rhino population. […] “Rhinos perform an important ecological function in the environment as a large grazing herbivore,” says Dale Wepener[….] “The protection of rhino is far more than just looking after rhino; other species that occur in the protected areas will benefit from the protection,” explains Jooste. “This will lead to an increase in diversity and result in much healthier ecosystems.”
2. Florida Corridor Buffers Effects of Climate Change on Wildlife — And People
Tumblr media
“A massive multi-partner effort that has conserved 10 million acres for wildlife in Florida over past decades will help buffer wildlife—and people—from the effects of climate change, a new report says. […] Protecting these corridors is important for wildlife genetics, demography and connectivity […], conducting prescribed fires in the corridor can reduce the risk of more intense wildfires [… and] they can provide buffers against hurricanes and seasonal thunderstorms.”
3. Global life expectancy to increase by nearly 5 years by 2050 despite geopolitical, metabolic, and environmental threats
“Increases are expected to be largest in countries where life expectancy is lower, contributing to a convergence of increased life expectancy across geographies. The trend is largely driven by public health measures that have prevented and improved survival rates from cardiovascular diseases, COVID-19, and a range of communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases (CMNNs).”
4. Valencia has Spain’s longest urban park
Tumblr media
“Jardin del Turia (Turia Garden) is the green spine of the City of Valencia and Spain’s (and possibly Europe’s) longest urban park stretching for a length of 8.5 kilometres [… and] the current administration plans to make Jardin del Turia Europe’s largest city green space by extending it to the sea[….] Almost all Valencia residents (97 per cent) live within 300 metres of an urban green space. […] Jardin del Turia is a true urban oasis that provides exceptional thermal comfort, with a temperature difference of up to three degrees compared to other areas of the city.”
5. This Paint Could Clean Both Itself and the Air
“When an artificial ultraviolet light source shines on [photocatalytic] paint, the nanoparticles react with pollutants to make them break down—theoretically removing them from the nearby air and preventing a discoloring buildup. [… R]esearchers developed a new photocatalytic paint that they claim works using UV rays from ordinary sunlight, making its self-cleaning properties easier to activate. They’ve also shown that they can effectively produce this paint from recycled materials [including fallen leaves].”
6. Planting Seedlings for a Cooler Rockingham
Tumblr media
“A dedicated group of volunteers recently planted over a thousand native seedlings in Lewington Reserve [… and] re-established canopy cover to areas of the reserve to create cooling shade for the local community and provide homes for native wildlife. […] Planting lots of trees and shrubs in urban areas can help create shade and cool cities, mitigating the impacts of climate change, contributing to biodiversity conservation and building greener, more resilient communities.”
7. Sydney’s first dedicated affordable housing for trans women designed to deliver ‘positive outcomes’
Tumblr media
“Community housing provider and charity Common Equity NSW, […] which is for people on very low to moderate incomes, prides itself on creating inclusive living and promotes the independence and well-being of people and communities […, and] will deliver the first-of-its-kind social housing in a bid to provide a safe place to live for transgender women seeking an affordable home.”
8. Rewilding: How a herd of bison reintroduced to Romania is helping ‘supercharge’ carbon removal
Tumblr media
“170 European Bison reintroduced to Romania’s Țarcu mountains could help capture and store the carbon released by up to 84,000 average US petrol cars each year. […] By grazing a 48 square kilometre area of grassland in a wider landscape of 300 kilometres squared, they helped to capture an additional 54,000 tonnes of carbon each year. That is around 10 times the amount that would be captured by the ecosystem without the bison.”
9. World’s biggest grids could be powered by renewables, with little or no storage
Tumblr media
“[…] 100% renewable supply can then match the load by putting surplus electricity into two kinds of distributed storage worth that [an energy expert] says are worth buying anyway – ice-storage air-conditioning and smart bidirectional charging of electric cars, and recover that energy when needed, filling the last gaps with unobtrusively flexible demand.”
10. Supporting the Long-Term Survival of Copper River Salmon and Alaska Native Traditions
Tumblr media
“With $4.3 million in NOAA funds, the Copper River Watershed Project and The Eyak Corporation will remove fish passage barriers, opening more streams for salmon spawning and subsistence fishing. [… As part of this effort, o]ld narrow culverts that constrict water flow will be replaced with “stream simulation” culverts wide enough to fit the full stream, including its banks. They are also deep to allow contractors to place stones and other material inside to mimic a natural stream bottom.”

what is happening in Valencia (Spain)?
More than 200 people have died and 2000 people are missing since the catastrophe that happened in Valencia, Spain, a couple days ago.
Valencia is one of the most popular and beautiful regions in Spain, often visited by lots of international — and national — tourists to have a great time in the summer.
Meteorologists said a year’s worth of rain had fallen in just eight hours in parts of Valencia — specially, in small towns — this Tuesday. In Spain, this phenomenon is called “Dana”, which is basically a “cold drop”, which causes saturated air to rise rapidly, leading to heavy rain, thunderstorms and tornadoes to happen.
For reference to americans: hurricane milton caused 27 dead, these massive storms in valencia caused more than 90 deaths in a region that is much, much smaller... the weather services warned about the danger, and political authorities still did nothing to send people home from their jobs. the civil alarms reached our phones at 8pm, when many were already trapped in cars, basements, malls, factories. the loss, especially human loss, is incalculable (from: @/woundposting on tumblr)
People who worked overnight for big companies were not even able to go back to their homes and ensure their safety — some of them, lots of them, even lost their lives in that same night. It has been three days now and there are still more reports of disappearances and deaths, and the government is NOT acting like they should. This is a tragedy, which could have been avoided if they only did one thing right, and no one is taking responsability — not the government, not the big companies who didn’t let their workers go home, no one.
It is always the working class people who help the working class people.
Since this is a situation that has took the whole country by surprise and horror, I will put more info under the cut if you want to know more, and if you want to donate to some gofundme’s.
Horta Sud is a county in Valencia that has been the most affected by the floodings. People are leaving their houses because they're scared of the infrastructure getting damaged and even walking by foot to Valencia capital to get food.

I can't do anything to help those in Valencia, but I at least want to say my opinion.
I don't live close enough to go offer my help, and I can't really donate right now. I don't have a car and I live pretty far away from the city, which is where the main points to collect food, water and clothes are at.
But I'm seeing so much help from the rest of the Spaniards. Giant amounts of food and water being sent that way, and an even bigger amount of Valencians or people that live nearby walking to the most affected places carrying food, water and clothes, and shovels, brooms, buckets and whatever they each had in their home that could be used to help. Seeing all those people, all those volunteers, helping is heartwarming. Good people do exist. Solo el pueblo salva al pueblo. Only the village saves the village.
I want to clarify all this people are going there walking or biking because they aren't use the roads to not oversaturate them.
Now, let's being. What has happened?
Before: The day before AEMET, the State Meteorology Agency, had been giving warnings and updating their social media and all that saying that this was big, that what was coming was gonna be catastrophic. But nonetheless, no official warnings where given by the state. School and work was all continuing as before. No kind of informational help was sent to the people.
During: Rain. A shit ton of rain. A years worth of rain in 8 hours. Even in the places with no rain the effects are catastrophic, the rivers have caused floodings, and the cities, towns and villages have all been covered by meters of water. I don't know how much.
The water rises in minutes, is fast, and with no warning no one was prepared. People were off to work, continuing with their every day life, now trapped wherever the flood caught them. Many others had gone to their garages to try and get their cars out when they saw that they were starting to flood. And many people have died in them, trapped. Don't blame these people, no kind of warning of how big this was gonna be was given, cars are a very big economical investment for the families and, again, the water rises too fast to really do much.
Cars and all kind of big, sharp and heavy crap being dragged by the water. That water also contaminated (by what the river in itself had, the liquids that came from inside the cars and other places, and now by the decomposing organic matter), so those inevitably swimming in it were in great danger for many reasons.
Think about the animals too. Ah, and also, no light nor electricity while all this was going on.
I've seen people on social media saying how it all went for them. I'm not gonna say their individual stories, but if you look them up, you'll be able to find them.
Immediately after: The people went to different stores to try and get food, water and medicine. All this stores were already broken and had been affected by the floodings. And still some newspapers (you know who you are) were trying to put shame on this people. Yes, I guess some people could have used the commotion to steal from houses or jewelry stores or whatever, but it wasn't the case of what they were showing, and it's not what the vast majority of people where doing.
Many others were out looking for their missing relatives. Some started to walk towards the big city nearby, to find some help. The conditions of the streets were apocalyptic.
A bit more time after: What I've said at the beginning. The affected throwing out the things inside their house that were too damaged by the water. Still no food, water or electricity. The roads blocked by the residues of what the water had dragged. Lots of mud everywhere. And the good people going there to offer their help. To clean the streets and their houses.
More or less right now: Other parts of Spain and even other countries offer help and resources. And the government of Valencia (Carlos Mazón is called the president) refuses that help. It took too long for the military to be sent to this places, I still haven't seen any news or information of them there (3 Nov. The military are not there yet), but they are advising the volunteers not to go help, that theres no need anymore and that they are making it harder for the "actual help" to go. Lies. There's no emergency services help, no policemen, firefighters or military helping. And not because they don't want to, the help they offer is being rejected. They are refusing outside help. I'm not gonna say my opinion, but you try and think why the government wouldn't want to let outsiders to see what had happened.
Cleaning all that mud is so hard. All the help is appreciated. With proper equipment and machinery this would be easier.
Who to blame: The government. Some say the one from the whole Spain, some say the one from Valencia. I don't care. But they didn't help. None of them. Not only did they CHOSE not to warn the people, but they had cut down the budget for the emergency services and gave it to bullfighting instead. Right now the number of deaths is at 159, but there are still hundreds of disappeared people, and I've heard from too many people that it's just not true. Those living in those places say they see dead people as they walk around the street, those working closer with the deceased are saying that the numbers are much higher, the research parties saying how certain places are almost cemeteries. I've just heard this, so don't take me too seriously as I genuinely don't know much. But I rather believe the people helping than the government that very clearly doesn't care.
And, I mean, this rains are pretty obviously one of the consecuences of climate change and how little those in power and with the ability to do things properly care.
But if you don't want to blame rain on anyone, at least blame how they handled it.
Blame Carlos Mazón.
I feel awful for not being able to help. Once I'm back in the city I study, I'll try and see if I can do something. I'll at least go to the protest, which I am pretty sure is gonna happen. I really hope it happens. I don't have much money myself, I wish I could go offer my work. I feel like I'm just saying excuses to not help. All I can do is talk about it, but I'm not even someone with influence. I'm also thinking, I'm studying pedagogy. Would there be a need for the kind of help I can offer? For future events like this I think there should be preparation, like there is in case of a fire. Could I help with that? Maybe? I feel useless. I don't want to stay here, comfortably, as others suffer.
Update (3nov): The king, queen, president of Spain and president of Valencia have gone to one of the affected places, Paiporta. I don't know why they are there, they are obviously not helping with the manual labor. I've seen some stuff around, I don't know what's really going on so for now I don't say anything. But the people were screaming at them and throwing stuff.

I fall in love over and over and over again. I am very angry and frustrated right now. My country is suffering from torrential rains that have left at least 200 dead in the southeast of Spain im the last 48 hours and dozens are still missing, all because of a meteorological phenomenon — a cold front — called DANA
There are many people trapped in their homes since the floods began, towns without water or electricity who cannot leave their homes because the streets are flooded or full of vehicles stuck together after being swept away by the water that impede the passage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are many other people who have lost everything, their homes, their businessess... People sleeping in bus stations or inside their universities. The supermakets in the affected cities look like this, either a disaster or almost empty because people keep buying non stop anything they can eat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But many executives and bosses expect their employees to go to work despite these circumstances because their lives are worth less than the shit that sticks to their shoes and the ONLY ones who are rebloging links to donate, asking others for help or volunteering to clean the streets or distribute food supplies are the people of my own country.
When there are floods or tornadoes in the USA we constantly see news about it on our channels and thousands of people retweet both inside and outside that country, they retweet the testimonies and cries for help, but we are just a vacation country, right? Almost nobody outside of Spain knows what's happening or talking about it. I have yet to see foreign celebrities or well-known streamers spreading awareness and it's so fucking frustrating the ones that give a single fuck are the ones who have less platform or money to help or those who are directly or indirectly affected by all of this
I am not saying what others suffer is less important or that people should stop talking about other country tragedies to focus on my country, but I think it's as important as if it happened anywhere else and our victims and affected people deserve to be heard too. And the worst thing? That many could have been evacuated safely if the government had not warned about the then upcoming floodings around 12 hours later than they should have. This is a negligence that has — and will keep costing in the following days — a concerning number of victims that could have been avoided otherwise.
Anyway, here are some threads in twitter explaining better than me what's happening and how others can help.

Spain announces measures to recover flood-hit Valencia
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced a major aid package to help affected Valencia residents and businesses recover and adapt to the changing climate.
Climate change kills and we are witnessing it. We will drive forward a transformation to adapt the territory to the climate emergency, which unfortunately particularly affects our dear Mediterranean area.
Last Tuesday, a massive storm caused rivers to burst their banks inland, sending waters rushing towards the sea. Emergency alerts came too late, with residents in most neighbourhoods caught by surprise.
At least 217 bodies have been recovered and authorities are continuing search and rescue operations. The number of missing has not yet been made public. Some 15,000 troops and national police officers are working on the ground to locate the missing, provide security, and restore basic services in the affected areas.
There are still missing people we need to find, homes and businesses that have been destroyed – buried under mud – and many people are still severely lacking.
Sánchez also announced direct cash transfers to affected homes and businesses, billions of euros in government loans and significant tax breaks. He said insurance payments would reach 3.5 billion euros ($3.8 billion) and that 70,000 claims had already been filed. The country has requested help from the EU’s Solidarity Fund.
Spain has always offered the European Union help when it was needed, but now, Spain is asking for help.
On Sunday, Sánchez, the president of Valencia and the king and queen of Spain were attacked by an angry crowd during a visit to the affected city. Protesters threw mud and insults and damaged an official vehicle.

"In June 1991 Slovenia declared independence. The war between the Yugoslav National Army and the newly-independent Slovenia lasted 11 days. What would happen next? Croatia was ready to declare independence too. But, unlike the small, ethnically homogenous Slovenia, Croatia was complicated: Serbs counted for 12% of the population of Croatia.
All peacemakers on all sides had been silenced, some of them brutally killed, with no perpetrator ever brought to justice. The tactic was an old one: instilling fear in people so they would be silent and obedient. It was a simple technique that had proved to work miracles throughout history. It worked perfectly this time as well. Nobody knew what would happen next. Would the Yugoslav National Army intervene? Would they mount a coup d’état? Weren’t they the ones whose duty it was to protect the country? Whose side were they on?
Every day there would be yet another highly flammable, highly frightening rumor: tomorrow they’ll close the borders; tomorrow they’ll occupy Croatia; tomorrow they’ll bomb Croatia; tomorrow all travel abroad will be forbidden. We were spending all our time glued to the TV and radio, trying to get any piece of trustworthy information. Instead, on both sides, we were getting only incendiary war propaganda. In the meantime, Serbian citizens in Croatia were losing jobs and getting fired. They were being threatened by their neighbors and expelled from their apartments, especially if they were unlucky enough to have anything to do with the Army. What seemed like a sick idea with no chance of realization suddenly became reality: the war was here.
Every day we were watching horrible scenes of killing on TV. A young Yugoslav Army soldier, a nineteen-year-old boy from Macedonia, was killed in Split by an angry mob. The Serbs in the Croatian region of Krajina were threatening an armed rebellion. Greater Serbia. Greater Croatia. I was getting sick. Would Goran be drafted? Into which army? To fight against whom? What if a military coup d’état happened and they closed the borders? Would we ever be able to get out of this hell?
When the first shooting started in Slovenia, thus opening the door to an overall war, Goran happened to be in Spain, at the Valencia Film Festival where his film about the Slovenian Rock’n’Roll group Laibach was shown. We would talk every day on the phone. Then, one day, I could no longer reach him. I was alone in my Zagreb apartment, sliding into panic. I was finally realizing that our life between Zagreb and Belgrade was an utopian idea headed towards extinction. But, there was still not enough clarity to start making long-term plans.
We were living day by day, not knowing if a bomb would strike, if our borders would be closed or if an uniformed person would throw us out of our home. Goran’s mom was getting death threats, although her connection with the Yugoslav army consisted only in getting the miserly pension checks addressed to her deceased husband."

Cala Saona, Formentera, Spain - Watercolor, pencil, ink - 5 x 8 inches.
When you draw or paint in public, people become curious. Whether working in a café, or in a waiting room at an airport, or on the corner of a street, you attract onlookers. I've been menaced by street thugs in Barcelona, but encounters with onlookers are usually pleasant. Sometimes sad, such as meeting a woman one morning in Valencia. I was drawing the decrepit husks of vacant apartment buildings that were about to be demolished. She told me that the 3rd floor flat of the building I was drawing had been her home. After the structure had been condemned by the city, she had been forcibly evicted by the police. They threw me out onto the street, she told me, "con golpes y patadas," with punches and kicks.
My usual reaction to people who stop to watch me is to ask, "do you like to draw?" In all the years I have worked in public, I have never yet encountered a child who answered, "No." With adults, however, the responses are mixed. The funniest exchange happened on the island of Formentera, when I was drawing these cliffs at twilight. The island, with its lively nightlife, transparent waters, clothing-optional beaches and mild weather attracts visitors from everywhere, especially from the less-temperate climates of northern Europe.
I had been working for a while and had been aware of the presence of someone standing behind me. It was an elderly gentleman, quiet and attentive. I asked him the question. Embarrassed, he backed away. "No," he said sheepishly, "I'm German."

The Alcàsser Girls
Miriam García Iborra, Antonia "Toñi" Gómez Rodríguez and Desirée Hernández Folch, known as the Alcàsser Girls (Spanish: Las niñas de Alcásser), were three teenage girls from Alcàsser, Valencia, Spain, who were kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered after hitchhiking to get to a nightclub in the nearby town of Picassent on November 13, 1992.
On November 13, 1992, Miriam García, Toñi Gómez, and Desirée Hernández disappeared while travelling to a secondary school party that was going to be held at Coolor, a popular nightclub located on the outskirts of Picassent, four kilometres from their hometown of Alcàsser. Miriam García asked her father, Fernando García, to pick them up and drive them to the club, but he was suffering from influenza and was unable to do so. The girls decided to hitchhiking, as they had done the previous summer. A young couple from Alcàsser took them to a petrol station near Picassent. There, a resident witnessed the girls climb into a sedan carrying a group of men. It was the last time the girls would be seen alive.
Their bodies were found on January 27, 1993, 75 days after their murders, by two beekeepers in a ditch located near La Romana ravine. Previous heavy rains softened the land, causing the corpses to appear from their improvised grave. It was soon confirmed that they had apparently been tortured and murdered. The only person charged regarding the event is Miguel Ricart. According to his statement, he and his friend Antonio Anglés picked up the girls at the petrol station. When the men drove past the nightclub and the girls began to scream, Anglés pistol-whipped them with a Star Model BM handgun. They headed to a crumbling abandoned house near a place known as La Romana, in a very isolated and mountainous area, where two of the girls were raped. Afterwards, they went to Catadau in search of some food, after which they raped the third girl two hours later. After being tortured for the remainder of the night, the girls were made to walk to a pit the men had previously dug and were assaulted further.
According to the autopsy, Hernández suffered a traumatic amputation of the right nipple and areola with a sharp object, and was then stabbed twice in the back. The other girls were beaten with sticks and stones, before finally being shot and buried. García's corpse displayed vaginal wounds caused by an object provided with sharp edges, possibly produced post-mortem. The killers picked up spent shell casings and cleaned their car. Anglés was not at home when the Civil Guard appeared in search of Enrique, leading to a national manhunt. The last sighting of Anglés in Spain was near Minglanilla, Cuenca, after which he went to Lisbon, and stowed away on board the container ship City of Plymouth. He is assumed to have died when he reportedly jumped overboard off the coast of Ireland, either instantly or from subsequent cold and/or drowning. Alternative theories state that Anglés evaded capture and, as a native of Brazil, is traveling under his Brazilian passport.
Another theory suggest that they where working for some important men who use to do sex party's with teenagers girls, because of the similarities with a case that happened in a near town, Macastre, 4 years before, when two Girls and once boy where brutally murder, with no suspect at all. This theory has been maintained over time, especially by Miriam's father, although it has been dismissed by the security forces on multiple occasions.
Antonio Anglés was able to disappear before his arrest, and to this day he is still wanted internationally.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT FRANCIS BORGIA The Patron Against Earthquakes Feast Day: September 30, October 3 (Jesuit calendar)
Francis Borgia (Francisco de Borja y Aragón) gave up incredible wealth, power and privilege as a Spanish nobleman to enter the Society of Jesus where his experience brought him to leadership as the third superior general of the young Society of Jesus. The oldest son of the third duke of Gandía, Borgia was born in the family palace in Valencia. His great grandfather on his father's side was Pope Alexander VI, and his mother's grandfather was King Ferdinand the Catholic.
Like other young nobles he was trained for life at court, and in 1522 was appointed page to his cousin Catherine, the sister of Emperor Charles V who invited him back to court after he studied philosophy for three years. In 1529, he married Leonor de Castro of Portugal, Empress Isabella's first lady-in-waiting. The 20 year-old Borgia was honored by the Emperor who named him Marquis of Llombai, and placed him in charge of the imperial household. During the next 10 years, Francis and Eleanor had eight children and lived in great familiarity with Charles and Isabella, until the Empress unexpectedly died on May 1, 1539.
Her death led directly to Borgia's conversion when Francis accompanied the funeral cortege to the burial place in the royal chapel in Granada. When the coffin was opened, he saw not the beautiful face of the 36-year-old queen, but a face beyond recognition. Not wanting to serve another master who would die, he began to devote himself to prayer and penance.
After he returned from Granada, he was appointed Viceroy of Catalonia in June 1539, and then became the fourth duke of Gandía after his father died four years later. He returned to the family palace to manage his estates, but when his wife Leonor died March 27, 1546, he resolved to dedicate the rest of his life to God's service. He was familiar with the Jesuits, having founded a Jesuit college in Gandía and being a personal friend of Father Peter Favre whom he asked to inform Ignatius of his decision. Ignatius welcomed him into the Society but recommended that he tell no one until he arranged affairs for his children and finished studying theology. Meanwhile, the founder of the Jesuits encouraged the duke to continue living as a nobleman. Francis pronounced his vows as a Jesuit on Feb. 1, 1548 and on Aug. 20, 1550 earned a doctorate in theology from the university which he himself had founded.
Since 1550 was a Holy Year, Francis took the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to Rome so he could visit Ignatius and arrange his public entrance into the Society of Jesus. He left his home in Gandía, never to see it again, and lodged in the Jesuit residence in Rome with Ignatius rather than taking Pope Julius III's offer to stay in the Borgia apartments in the Vatican. After living as a Jesuit from the end of October until early February 1551, he returned to Spain where he resigned his title in favor of his son, Carlos. As soon as he received the Emperor's letter accepting his resignation, Francis donned the Jesuit cassock. He was ordained a priest on May 23 and celebrated his first Mass in the chapel in the Loyola family home.
For a few years Borgia worked as an ordinary parish priest. In 1554 he was named Commissary General in Spain, with power over provincials in Spain and Portugal. He founded Spain's first novitiate, at Simancas, and set up over 20 schools. He did not attend the first general congregation, convened almost two years after Ignatius died, but did return to Rome in 1561 at Pope Pius IV's request. He was chosen to be vicar general when Father James Laínez, who succeeded Ignatius as superior general, attended the last session of the Council of Trent. Upon Laínez's return, Borgia became assistant for Spain and Portugal, and then was elected to succeed Laínez after his death in 1565.
Borgia served as the third superior general of the Jesuits for seven years and devoted himself to revising the Society's rules, expanding its missions in India and the Americas, and shepherding the growth of the young Society.
His final project was a mission to Spain accompanying Cardinal Michele Bonelli in an effort to secure Spain's help against the Turks. The two churchmen left Rome in June 1571, and arrived in Barcelona by the end of August. Borgia was overwhelmed by the reception he received from people who had known him as a nobleman and honored his choice of religious life. In December, Borgia left Spain for France to continue the diplomatic mission, but he fell ill from fever and pleurisy because of the unusually cold. He had to spend weeks resting in Turin on the return trip to Rome and then stayed with relatives in Ferrara during the summer.
Finally, he set out for Rome on Sept. 3, 1572, going to bed immediately upon his arrival. His final illness lasted three days before the 61-year-old general died during the night of September 30.

Biography:
Cherri Evelyn Hawthorne was born on September 18th, 1984 in Memphis, Tennessee to parents Michael and Lisa Hawthorne. In 1988, at age 4 her family moved to Valencia, Spain due to her father's work. Michael Hawthorne worked for Umbrella Europe under Team 6, along with researcher Luis Serra Navarro. Her mother worked as a nurse at the local hospital.
In 1994, when Hawthorne was 10 years old, she and her mother moved back to the USA, to Raccoon City, Colorado, while her father stayed in Spain. The reason for Raccoon specifically was Umbrella’s influence over the area. At the time she attended Raccoon Elementary School, and befriended Emma Kendo, acting as an older sister figure and best friend to her. Her mother found work as a nurse in the Spencer Memorial Hospital. Her father visited them for only a week or so at a time every few months, at the time working on the Nemesis Project.
On September 25th, when Raccoon Elementary School shut down due to the T-virus outbreak, she became isolated in her own home with her father. Lisa didn't return home from work that night, informing Michael through the phone that she is stuck in the hospital, tending to infected patients, both of them deciding to keep Cherri in the dark about it just in case.
Hawthorne stayed mostly in her bedroom with the blinds down as instructed by her father, occasionally leaving to play video games, until the events of September 29th, documented in the Raccoon City Tapes.
Post-Raccoon, she was sent to a military boarding school under close supervision of the government, her survival of the massacre being seen as extraordinary and worth looking into.
She was coerced into joining the same government program as Leon S. Kennedy at age 18 in 2002. It is mentioned that they vaguely knew each other for the two years before Ashley’s kidnapping, but Leon didn't recognize her from Raccoon City.
On November 2nd, 2004 Hawthorne was sent together with Kennedy to a remote village in Spain to investigate president Graham's daughter’s disappearance, due to both of them being the only ones not being investigated for cooperation with the kidnappers. Leon, because of his close relationship with the president and Cherri, because she was still under close supervision. The rest of the mission is (will be) documented in a Resident Evil 4 (Remake) spin-off fanfiction :3
Random facts and info:
the scar under her left eye is from the double garrador fight before the throne room
knows english, spanish tried to get Leon to teach her italian (failed miserably)
learns and picks up things very quickly
she works best with long-range weapons like sniper rifles
adopted an orange cat with Leon, thought it was a male, named him Vincent only to later notice the lack of balls (her name is still Vincent)
started cutting Leon's hair after getting together because hates going to the hairdresser
at some point between raccoon city and stratcom she started considering dropping out and becoming a merc sniper (teenage angst stuff)
definitely puts stickers on her motorola flip phone
has a beetle-shaped keychain (won by Leon at the shooting range in Spain)
speaking of, has more keychains than actual keys
christmas is her fav holiday, five seconds after halloween ends she's already hanging mistletoe and singing last christmas
probably uses strawberry scented no tears disney princess shampoo (Leon probably accidentally used it at least once)
keeps her hair rather short because in raccoon city when she had a long braid it got caught on something and she almost died
I didn't put it in any fic but she definitely sang that 99 bottles of beer song on the way to valdelobos in the car w Leon
definitely went on an aquarium date with him at some point
at least one
basically cannot drive, used to commute to and from work but now she just hitches rides with Leon for the low price of three kisses per ride
definitely bought him a cat ear headband as a joke but he does wear it sometimes when his hair falls into his face
modern au she'd watch those TikTok episodes of family guy with the asmr videos underneath for hours bcs she doesn't even realize
sometimes when she's in a hurry accidentally puts on Leon's shoes and looks like that amongus drip meme
forgets the word recoil and calls it knockback like in minecraft
can't have too much sugar she WILL jump on walls
calls people slurs in cod lobbies
fav game is silent hill or mortal kombat
can barely cook but Leon can barely cook too so when they cook together they become like gordon ramsey it's just math
(cook together aka Leon cooks Cherri sits on the counter and looks pretty)

Parchís House in #Valencia, Spain by La Caseta Arquitectura @lacaseta_arquitectura. Read more: Link in bio! Photography: German Cabo @german_cabo. The Parchís House arose from working on a project where we had so much fun that it ended up becoming a game. In this case, we learned to play with space and its finishes. We started by devising versatile solutions that would increase the use of every corner and we ended up combining colours to fill them with vitality, hence our Parchís House was born. This house, located on the ground floor of a block of flats in the city of Valencia, has a useful surface area of 38.5 m2 and a lot of height. We found a traditional style exterior carpentry that we wanted to preserve. Given its small floor area, making the most of the space meant growing in height… #casa #spain #архитектура www.amazingarchitecture.com ✔ A collection of the best contemporary architecture to inspire you. #design #architecture #amazingarchitecture #architect #arquitectura #luxury #realestate #life #cute #architettura #interiordesign #photooftheday #love #travel #construction #furniture #instagood #fashion #beautiful #archilovers #home #house ‎#amazing #picoftheday #architecturephotography ‎#معماری (at Valencia, Spain) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnvkjkvsno4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
