Random First Class Trio + Zack Headcanons #3: Crack Version
Angeal:
His favorite workout song is "YMCA" by Village People.
He's definitely knocked out Wutai soldiers like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somebody once mistook him as Zack's father due to similarities in their features. He didn't even try to correct them.
His sneeze is louder than the Krakatoa explosion.
Rickrolled everyone by singing "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley at a company gala while he was drunk. (Sephiroth and Genesis didn't speak to him for a month. ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€)
Makes terrible dad jokes that even Zack cannot stomach. (He's definitely done that "Hi, hungry! I'm dad!" shit with Zack. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚)
Genesis:
He is a big Fergie fan and knows her songs by heart. He can also rap that part in "Fergalicious."
He did an iconic dance number to "Umbrella" with Andrea Rhodea at the Honeybee Inn like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also likes Lady Gaga and blasts "Bad Romance" every time he and Sephiroth spar with each other.
He hates horror movies. He's the loudest out of the trio when watching them (he's either screaming at the characters or at the monsters/ghosts).
Aside from LOVELESS, he also quotes "Mean Girls" on the regular. (Guess who he quotes the most... ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰)
Totally has a blog for Shinra blinds just because (basically who's dating or fucking who, juicy stuff on important Shinra officials and staff, etc.). He once published a blind on Rufus defacing one of President Shinra's statues with a drawing of a dick. No matter how many times Shinra has gotten it shut down, Genesis somehow manages to keep on reviving it. Recently, Kunsel and some members of Red Leather have joined his team.
Sephiroth:
Can't stand spicy food. He avoids it as much as he can. Eating spicy foods will cause his eyes to water and his nose to redden like this:
Tumblr media
(Genesis managed to snap an unfortunate photo of him dying from the spiciness of the curry and sent it to the Silver Elite fanclub with the caption, "IS THIS YOUR KING???" ๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿคญ)
Somehow, he has the most wins in UNO and Monopoly.
Catwoman is his favorite DC character; Black Cat is his favorite Marvel character. (Gee, I wonder why... ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”)
Whenever he goes outside, a horde of cats just mysteriously flock to him. Genesis and Angeal find it both amusing and creepy. (My aunt is actually like this. Wherever she goes, cats mysteriously gather around her, it's so freaky! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ)
He can actually do the lazy eye trick, and loves to freak Genesis out with it.
He once dressed as Sadako/Samara Morgan from "The Ring" for the Halloween costume contest... and WON.
Zack:
Has sung "Jenny" by The Click Five using a shortened version of Genesis's name to annoy him. ("I'm standing still, Genny!" "Be quiet, you overgrown mutt!" "You got me on my knees, Genny!")
(This ends up with Genesis summoning Ifrit on Zack's ass ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚)
He and Kunsel quote Vines all the time, usually around any of the First Class Trio or Lazard just so they could revel in their confused faces.
Zack and Kunsel: *to Angeal* You are my daaaaad! You're my dad! Boogie woogie woogie!!!
Angeal:
Tumblr media
Once, after getting drunk during the SOLDIER game night, he and the lower-class SOLDIERs thought it was a good idea to go sledding down the building stairs, so they brought mattresses from their dorms to use as makeshift sleds. Needless to say, the infirmary reached full capacity that night.
On April Fools' Day, he somehow managed to hijack Shinra's PA system and started playing "Careless Whisper" on full blast.
He's a massive Pokรฉmon fanboy and knows the Pokรฉmon Theme Song by heart. In fact, he has his contacts named after Pokรฉmon: Angeal is Machamp, Sephiroth is Mewtwo, Genesis is Charizard, Tseng is Umbreon, Aerith is Jigglypuff, Cloud is Pikachu, etc.
Threw an apple at Hojo and left a shitload of Legos all over his lab for subjecting Sephiroth to a particularly painful physical test.

Muse Disc Guide - Showbiz [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IN MUSIC
In the UK in 1999, dance and idol music dominated the scene. This trio emerged in the midst of such a rock slump and brought new life and hope to the scene with their rich creativity and solid musicianship, which were not typical of newcomers.
At the time of making this album, their average age was just over 20. However, for the three, who had been playing together in a band since junior high school, this was their first album. Most of the songs on the album were written over the span of several years. Seven of the songs (2/ Muscle Museum, 5/ Cave, 7/ Unintended, 8/ Uno, 9/ Sober, 11/ Escape, 12/ Overdue) have already been released on rare EPs from their former label, Dangerous (although the recording times and versions were different).
The growth they have achieved since their formation is in direct proportion to the variety of music they have absorbed during that time. From classical to boogie-woogie, Matthew's musical origins lie in the piano, Dom started playing drums after jazz, and Chris has played guitar, keyboards, drums and a variety of other instruments. They started playing in bands around 1992, just as the grunge wave was blowing, but they also digested melodic punk, grebo, goth, alternative metal and more.
What ultimately defined their uniqueness was Matthew's insatiable inquisitiveness and omnivorous tastes. At the age of 17, Matthew wandered around Europe, getting to know the folk music of different regions and later learning to play the Spanish guitar. In his late teens, he returned to classical piano, including Chopin and Rachmaninoff, while the influence of Jeff Buckley became evident in his melancholic melodies and emotional singing style with a deft use of falsetto. This album, which has all of this in its blood, is a debut that is still in its infancy compared to their second and later albums, which fully developed their unique personalities, but it is diverse and accomplished enough to show their potential. The coexistence of the dramatic contrasts of movement and stillness, as well as the coexistence of the intense emotion and elegant romanticism represented by (3/ Fillip), can be said to be the cornerstone of the โ€˜Museโ€™ style. โ€”Imai Sumi

1999 Hit Albums
The year 1999, when Showbiz was released, was actually a bad year for UK bands. The year was dominated by idol/pop acts. This was epitomised by the debut album (A/ โ€ฆBaby One More Time) by Britney Spears, the biggest pop icon of the following decade. The video for โ€˜Baby One More Timeโ€™, featuring a high-school girl in a super-mini, navel-baring look, is still burned into people's brains as a powerful impression. It was also the year Christina Aguilera made her album debut. Other so-called boy band albums such as Backstreet Boys, Westlife, and Boyzone topped the charts across the board, while S Club 7 and Steps also became regulars in the UK charts.
In the US, Red Hot Chilli Peppers' (B/ Californication), which Muse also opened for, proved overwhelmingly strong, while Limp Bizkit, who debuted with (C/ Significant Other), raised the signal for the rise of Nu Metal. Eminem, who debuted with (D/ The Slim Shady LP), later became a major force on the chopping block of Limp and the aforementioned Britney. Among these, the few successful albums by young UK guitar bands were Travisโ€˜ (E/ The Man Who), which replaced the loud Rock'n'Roll of their debut with a more melancholic sound, and Stereophonicsโ€™ (F/ Performance and Cocktails), which was a straight-up rock hit. Although Muse were initially compared to the likes of Radiohead, they were quite unique in the scene. That hasn't changed even now, though.
-
IN LYRICS
As a debut album, the lyrics are very much Matthew in his local Teignmouth days. A prime example is (4/ Falling Down), which even gives the population/household numbers: โ€˜15,000 people screamโ€™ and โ€˜5,000 houses burning downโ€™. The city's status as a holiday destination for Londoners, a city that makes its living by serving tourists, combined with its recent desolation, made adolescent Matthew feel like a core of losers in a society of inequality. It was self-evident to Matthew that โ€˜no one can save this cityโ€™, and not only in this song, but also in the protagonists of the lyrics, there is a tendency to try to escape or hide somewhere.
(1/ Sunburn) is also attributed to a local story, and here too we can see the composition of a disparate society: โ€˜the winners who spend a lot of money on a tourist attraction that seems to be a kind of women's dance showโ€™. The image of the โ€˜Sunburnโ€™ = tanning is also associated with ugly adults for Matthew, but it could also be interpreted as a form of the money-grubbing music business. Although wrapped in a thinly veiled mask, there is no way to hide the nervous state of mind before the debut, and the world is formed by โ€˜meโ€™ who restrains himself and clowns around, and โ€˜youโ€™ who indulges his desires. Track (6/ Showbiz), exudes the blue anxiety of the night before stepping into the real showbiz.
In an interview during his first visit to Japan, Matthew said, โ€˜There were alcoholics roaming around in my hometownโ€™, and (9/ Sober), in which several brands of whisky are interwoven, does not deny such drunks, but rather describes the effects of alcohol on the mind and body in a rock-like manner. The casual love for one's hometown can also be read into this, and the half-love-hate feelings towards one's hometown overlap with the split state of what is known in Japan as โ€˜chuunibyou/middle-school second year syndromeโ€™. The British national band was very young at the time of their debut. โ€”Kaoru Abe

The Intriguing Intersection of Grand UFO Conspiracies and Cyberpunk Media
Introduction
As subcultures with countercultural leanings and an insatiable thirst for what lies beyond the known, the grand UFO conspiracy theories and the cyberpunk genre share an intriguing relationship. Both captivate their audiences with tales of hidden agendas, shadowy organizations, and elusive truths. This essay aims to dig deep into the interplay between these two fascinating realms by discussing notable examples across various media forms such as films, television series, books, and anime.
The Allure of Conspiracies and Dystopia
Before diving into specific examples, it's crucial to understand the appeal that draws people towards conspiracy theories and cyberpunk. UFO conspiracy theories paint a picture of a world where clandestine operations are at play, knowledge is withheld, and the public is deceived. Cyberpunk, on the other hand, portrays near-future dystopias with grim landscapes, where technological advancements often come at the expense of human connection and morality. These themes overlap, creating a narrative breeding ground ripe for cross-over stories and theories.
Films that Blur the Lines
"Blade Runner" & Project Blue Book
Although Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" doesn't directly delve into UFOs, it plays on the idea of life beyond Earth with its bioengineered beings, known as Replicants. The film's hidden agendas and secret projects remind us of real-world government initiatives like Project Blue Book, designed to investigate UFO sightings.
"The Matrix" & The Men in Black
"The Matrix" captures the essence of hidden truths and the battle to reveal them, much like the general sentiment in UFO conspiracy circles about 'The Men in Black.' These government agents are rumored to suppress UFO eyewitnesses, an idea that resonates with the Matrix's human-suppressing sentient machines.
TV Shows that Touch the Nerve
"The X-Files"
No discussion of this topic would be complete without mentioning "The X-Files," a show that masterfully combines elements of UFO conspiracy theories and cyberpunk. FBI agents Mulder and Scully navigate a world of deceit, much like a cyberpunk protagonist would, questioning what is real in their quest for the truth about extraterrestrial life.
"Black Mirror" & The Majestic 12
"Black Mirror" delves deep into technology's dark side, but some episodes subtly touch upon themes that UFO enthusiasts would find interesting. The secrecy surrounding advanced technology in the show mirrors the conspiracy theory of the Majestic 12, a rumored secret committee of scientists and military leaders supposedly managing extraterrestrial affairs.
Books and Literature
"Neuromancer" & The Roswell Incident
William Gibson's "Neuromancer" isn't about UFOs, but it was revolutionary in defining the cyberpunk genre. It embodies the cyberpunk ethos of anti-authoritarianism, a sentiment also shared by those who believe that the Roswell Incident was a cover-up.
Anime Crossovers
"Serial Experiments Lain"
This anime explores complex themes of reality, identity, and the internet. While not explicitly related to UFOs, its narrative could easily be interpreted as an allegory for the quest to understand what governments might be hiding about extraterrestrial life.
"Cowboy Bebop"
An iconic example of a cyberpunk-infused world, "Cowboy Bebop" includes an episode titled "Boogie Woogie Feng Shui," which subtly incorporates themes of ancient alien theories, a staple in UFO conspiracy thought.
Conclusion
The overlapping themes of hidden truths, anti-authoritarian tendencies, and unexplained phenomena make the relationship between UFO conspiracy theories and the cyberpunk genre a particularly rich subject matter. Both tap into the human desire to uncover suppressed knowledge and challenge the status quo, whether it's government cover-ups about extraterrestrials or dystopian futures shaped by technology.
And now, don't get us started on how the UFO conspiracy theories have surprising similarities with Faerie myth pre-Roswell. That's a rabbit hole for another time.

lmao okay akechi i fucking dare you to go to the police with that. i dare you. here is my weird iphone panorama photo except someone moved and fucked up the image.
but no he has video too so FIIIINE I GUEEEEEESS that's decent blackmail material.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOU LIE LIKE A BEIGE RUG
Tumblr media
allegedly when Akechi was following the Thieves around, he ran into Black Mask, who shot at him, and the confrontation awakened Akechi to his persona.
Did I not say that we wouldn't see his awakening? Because he's deffo had his persona for longer than a month.
All of Akechi's testimony is contrived as fuck and has nothing to back it up, but because the Thieves are panicking (and are kinda dumb) they don't question any of it. Instead, Akechi just lays out his ultimatum: either they help him uncover the true identity of the "real" killer, or he turns them over to the police.
Tumblr media
i wanna crack open his skull and read it like tasseomancy, what the fuck is even going through his head, what is his morality, what are his goals. I have no fucking idea.
I KNOW HE'S THE KILLER. Like, the thing about Persona games (or at least 4 and 5) is that you reach a point in the story where the story narrows things down until there is only one option left. As with Adachi, Akechi has been suspect for a long fucking time, but eventually the branches of the story get trimmed until there is only one option remaining. And it is Akechi.
.... Hm. And like with Adachi, I have no idea what his motivations are. Funny, that.
Tumblr media
hang on, after the meeting, everyone leaves except Reverie and Morgana, and things go hazy and weird for a sec before the scene abruptly ends. And Morgana's little icon there is the "talking" icon, not the "surprise" or "confusion" icon.
What is happening? Is something important occurring that the story is obfuscating or is Reverie-In-The-Framing-Device getting woozy?
The School Festival is over, Akechi bails on the rest of the interview without answering who the Thieves are.
There's an extended animated cutscene where Kasumi dances at the post-festival dance? But uh. I don't.... care. Sorry, Kasumi, you are suffering from how tacked on you feel to the story.
Like, Kasumi's bit is so OBVIOUSLY shoehorned in, it's coinciding with the exact same place where Reverie is supposed to have a mandatory hangout with Haru?
Like, Kasumi and Reverie leave, the game says the dance is over....
Tumblr media
THEN HARU TEXTS AND IS LIKE "HEY THE DANCE IS STARTING, WANNA HANG" AND REVERIE TURNS AROUND AND GOES BACK IN
l m a o Persona 5 Royal, you are KILLIN me here. this is worse than that time Mishima said "kek" out loud, goddammit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haru is much more likeable. She gets called up to do an impromptu interview and the emcee is an asshole and starts asking about how she feels about the Phantom Thieves killing her fucking dad
so Reverie stands up and causes a commotion
Reverie is the best protagonist yet.
AND
THEN
Tumblr media
OH SHIT WE'RE FUCKIN RUMBLED, DAD KNOWS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sojiro obviously noticed his daughter has gone through a significant change in the past few months but has chalked it up to her finally finding friends her age who support her. But finding the calling card seems to confirm his worst fears.
FUTABA'S VA IN THIS IS AMAZING BTW she is palpably trying to explain something very emotional while staving off a fucking meltdown and the way she struggles to control her words is like-- I HAVE BEEN HERE. I HAVE DONE THIS EXACT STACCATO SPEECH PATTERN.
It's fabulous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was straight up ready to fess up but Sojiro doesn't Get It and seems to think Reverie is just linked to the Thieves somehow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i wanna crush Futaba against my chest and hug her for about an hour
Tumblr media
YOU ARE MY DAD, YOU'RE MY DAD, BOOGIE WOOGIE WOOGIE
Tumblr media
gurrrrrrl, same tho
The Thieves meet up the next day to go over everything they know before giving Akechi an answer. Makoto lays out that all of this, the hacking, the manipulation of the media, the way Okumura was placed in their path, the hype cycle around the Thieves, it was all a huge set-up and set-ups like that take money and resources to happen. Ergo, the person they're up against is no Republic serial villain, they're either an extremely powerful individual or a whole organization.
Also there is a 30 million yen reward for details about them now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes I know I'm a huge bitch and I loudly dislike Ryuji and I have been screaming for tens of hours now what he and Mishima are broadly to blame for all of this shit happening.
Tumblr media
It's deeply satisfying to see the rubber band finally snap back as the weight of his actions falls on him. Yeah, he's like 16, 17, but he's been toying with people's hearts and minds like it's a game to win. It's turned him into a kinda terrible dude, so the clarity hitting him this hard is actually reassuring. Somewhere in that brain, he knows the gravity of this fuck up, he knows he's gone astray. Not even led astray, he was hyped for fame all the way back before Madarame. First a desire for recognition, sure, but it grew into a ravenous monster appetite for infamy and all the perks that come with it.
I'm just relieved that the fucking hours upon hours of dealing with his horseshit was actually building to something. That doesn't make me like him, but it makes me feel satisfied that all of that was intentional.
Now if we can just get Mishima in on this shit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good for you, realization of the self is the first step to changing the self. Now please: grow as a fucking person, i'm begging you.
Also he apologizes for his outburst scaring Ann and Haru.
Still nothing for Morgana, so that ship has sunk.
oh btw in case you don't believe me, here is Mishima literally saying "kek".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we should have stolen his fucking heart when we had the chance, jesus fuck

Jerry Lee Lewis (1935 - 2022), an early rock and roll icon, died today at the age of 87. ย  His mother wanted him to play gospel songs exclusively, but no one took the fire out of Jerry Lee. He played a "boogie-woogie" rendition of the song "My God is Real" at his church school and he was kicked out of the school. ย Going on to great success, he signed a contract with Sun Records - where Elvis first recorded - in 1956. Unfortunately, his marriage to a 15 year old cousin derailed his career but he came back as a country singer. ย  His classics "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Great Balls of Fire" still live on, as does his biography at AncientFaces. RIP Jerry Lee - you and your fiery piano.

Mark Greene for the character ask ๐Ÿ‘€
Why I like them: he's my DAD (BOOGIE WOOGIE WOOGIE)
Why I donโ€™t: when he yells at Rachel it breaks my heart :(
Favorite episode (scene if movie): if it's just for him, Love's Labor's Lost... there's a reason that one's so iconic
Favorite season/movie: s5!! he's survived his Big Character Development of the early seasons and gets to just chill. also the Amanda Lee arc happens in s5 and I deserved a whole season of her shenanigans and Mark increasingly in denial about her weirdness actually
Favorite line: *with his mouth full of bagel* I am a virtuous man!
Favorite outfit: whenever he wears his ill-fitting long-sleeved shirts over a white t-shirt and sweats. bc it is exactly the kind of outfit my actual dad wears all the time.
OTP: DO I EVEN NEED TO SAY IT
Brotp: I'm the only one on the Rogreene train and I'll own that. all his friendships are so good though - Mark & Susan BFFs forever, Mark & Doug, Mark & Carol...
Headcanon: his favorite kind of doughnut is maple :)
Unpopular opinion: his whole awkward thing about Susan is literally just because everyone keeps insisting they can't possibly be just friends so he's like "well I guess I must have a crush on her?"
A wish: I should get to hug him he looks like he gives great hugs
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: do not EVER reboot the series and do not pull a GA dream sequence with him I would hate it so much
5 words to best describe them: my dad (boogie woogie woogie)

Week ending: 14th March
From the rightly-forgotten David Whitfield to the iconic songs we've got this week - quite the turnaround. Which is partly why I'm still enjoying this project. It gets you listening to a real mix of stuff, and you appreciate the good songs so much more when they come up. Also, it's a nice reminder that this stuff all co-existed. People were out there listening to Little Richard and David Whitfield at the same time - wild!
Long Tall Sally - Little Richard (peaked at Number 3)
Okay, the fact that this only reached number three is a crime! The sheer energy, Little Richard's manic screams, rasps and whoops, that saxophone solo - this song's got it all. There's a reason so many artists have covered it - the original sounds so fun that any musician worth their salt would want to give it their own go!
The song itself has an interesting backstory - apparently annoyed that Pat Boone had also managed to get a hit out of Tutti Frutti, Little Richard deliberately was looking for a song so fast that Boone couldn't keep up, something that only Richard could sing. A little girl then approached a radio host who knew Richard, offering up the lyric about how I saw Uncle John with bald-head Sally / He saw Aunt Mary coming and he ducked back in the alley. He loved the sound of it, and it turned into a song with the help of a local songwriter, Enotris Johnson.
The end result is a song that's furiously fast, and - though I'd never really thought about it until now - about adultery! Sung from the point of view of some third party who promises to tell Aunt Mary what her husband's been getting up to. We know that he claim he has the misery, but he havin' a lotta fun with the titular Sally, who, we learn, is built for speed / She got everything that Uncle John need. Well, then.
The odd thing about all this is that I somehow never really thought about it? I knew it was suggesting something. But I guess that's partly because of the way that the song, in the end, seems to just emphasis how fun it is to go out and live wildly, hence the repeated line about how We gonna have some fun tonight. It's not a blistering takedown of John or of Sally, or even really a takedown at all, seeing as how the narrator's in on the act by the end of it all.
It's something we've seen a whole lot with these rock and roll songs - they just take their lyrics and the scenarios that they set up way less seriously. Instead of strictly being "about" some romantic situation, it's more about the aesthetics of it all, the style, the sound. This is technically a song about Uncle John sleeping around, but in practice, it's a song about speedy shuffle drumming, boogie-woogie piano, insistent bass, purring saxophone solos and Little Richard's inimitable voice as he goes woooo-ooo-oooo-ooo in the middle, or screams to rival the sax.
If you can't tell, I love this song. It's just got such a full, fun sound, and a pace that gets you tapping your foot and bopping your head. You can't make out all the lyrics, but there's enough that you can tell it's suggestive stuff, not just hand-holding and staring into each other's eyes, you know?
I should also mention that there's now authentic, black African-American R&B music that's hitting the charts, not just Bill Haley-style covers by white people. In particular, you can see this in the lyrics - loads of AAVE features that you really couldn't imagine a white artist comfortably using. It will be interesting to track this kind of "black accent" in music, and see who's using it for what kind of song. So yeah, gonna put a pin in that, for now.
Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) - Harry Belafonte (2)
From one strand of black music, to another disnticntly different one - this time it's not R&B, but Jamaican calypso music, song by one Harry Belafonte. You know this song, even if you don't think you do - Harry's is the most famous verison, but it's been covered by a lot of folks, Freddie Mercury also famously improvised over the opening lines at Live Aid, and from my own childhood, I remember Jason Derulo riffing off it for one of his songs. So it's definitely still a song people are familiar with.
It's a traditional Jamaican call-and-response work song, sung from the perspective of dock workers working overnight to load bananas onto a boat, and waiting on the dawn so that they can go home. Hence the repeated refrain, in Jamaican patois, daylight come and me wan' go home. And honestly, that's most of it. Harry vamps it up on the verses, with the refrain interspersed with lines about working all night off just a drink of rum, about loading the bunches, and about waiting for the tally-man to come and count what they've loaded, but it's basically just an account of a night working.
I should also note here that the sound of the song, apart from this, is really simple, just a rolling drum at the start, and some pitched percussion throughout. Apart from this, this song's sung a cappella. It's quite a different sound to what we've heard elsewhere, in a strikingly refreshing way.
Harry's gone on the record describing this as a song that's about life under colonialism in the early 20th century, with local black working class people forced to take up gruelling jobs for foreign companies, such as the banana exporter here. And it's interesting that when this version came out, Jamaica has some degree of autonomy but still wasn't officially an independent country. It only became independent in 1962, but the 1950s by the sound of things was a hotbed of people wanting independence. So I can see why songs like this might have become popular in Jamaica around this time!
It's catchy, too, which apparently was enough to make it an international hit. This wasn't unprecedented. There had been some big calypso-influenced hits already, in particularly the Andrews Sisters' Rum and Coca-Cola from a bit over 10 years earlier, which has been credited with bringing calypso to the US. Still, it's Harry Belafonte, who was born in New York, grew up in Jamaica, but then moved back to New York and was working there at this point, was just the right person to make the genre properly popular, with his album Calypso being widely cited as a seminal one. My guess is that calypso was probably popular with the same people who liked folk music more generally, with the Caribbean stylings adding a layer of exoticism that might have intrigued people.
Anyway, it's also interesting to me that in the US, the song only really broke when a folk group, the Tarriers, did a cover, with Harry's blessing. In the UK, in contrast to this, people went straight for Harry's original, ignoring the folk cover. Part of me wonders if this is because Britain was already being exposed to Jamaican music, thanks to a steady stream of West Indian immigrants arriving after World War II to aid with rebuilding, the so-called Windrush generation. We've already seen at least one of these in Winifred Atwell, and there will be a steady stream of home-grown musicians of West Indian descent throughout the coming decades. As such, you have to wonder if the UK, thanks to its colonial past and continuing links to the Caribbean, is just that little bit better primed for Jamaican accents and sounds than the US was? Again, it will be interesting to track, at least...
Ooh, this week was good. Like, really good. Both songs from a different black musical tradition, both having made their way to the UK via the US, and both with a really distinctive sound that's different to what's gone before. I found Day-O probably the most interesting, with its unusual subject matter and its links to patterns of immigration and musical trends of the early to mid-20th century. And it's clearly been influential since its release. Still, my title at the end is given for my favourite, not the song I had more to say about, necessarily. And there's one song here that I defintely had more fun listening to...
Favourite song of the bunch: Long Tall Sally
