4 Tips for Creating an Authentic Nautical Interior
Remember that last vacation at the beach? It’s easy to bring those memories home with nautical style decorating. A nautical interior is one that’s reminiscent of ships, sails, and ocean sunsets. And if you’re someone who loves the beach, a nautical home — or even a single room filled with nautical decor — offers a relaxing break from the outside world. Use these four tips to get started.
Tumblr media
1. Begin With Nautical Theme Lighting
Lighting is an important consideration when you’re trying to recreate an outdoor feeling in an indoor space. Natural light is a great place to begin, so if your space features windows with heavy, room-darkening treatments, nix them and let the sun shine through. Consider using a big window as a display space for a gorgeous model ship or some wayfaring tools such as spy glasses, sextants, or a ship’s bell.
For dark corners or spaces that lack natural light, a ship-themed chandelier or wall-mounted lanterns will highlight your nautical interior.
2. Consider Adding One or More Model Ships
You’ll find a model ship for sale in all sizes, from miniature to extra-large. Consider collecting several in different scales and displaying them on open shelving, in bookcases, or inside a glass-paneled curio cabinet. Display your collections in small groupings for added drama.
3. Bring In Nautical-Themed Accessories
Nautical-colored rugs, weather vanes, tide clocks, and wooden oars all make beautiful decor. And when displayed sparingly in your space, they can lend your room that seaside mood you crave without appearing cluttered. Choose one or two larger pieces as conversation starters, and add a few smaller pieces to fill in. Good options include:
Sea-themed placemats or coasters
Throw pillows with nautical motifs
Wall art that features boats, marinas, or lighthouses
Accessories made of netting or rope
Your nautical home may mimic a cozy ship’s interior or the bright light of a beach house. It’s only limited by your imagination and by the decor you choose to complement your theme.
4. Remember That Less Is More
A last rule of thumb is to show restraint. It’s easy to get caught up in the fun of finding nautical decor, but it’s important to remember that less is usually more. Opt for a high-end, classic look, as opposed to one that’s packed full of smaller knick-knacks and items that could come across as clutter. Leave room for white space, and place one or two items on a shelf, as opposed to many. Do the same with your wall art. Tasteful decorating requires self control and an eye for detail. Once you master these two must-haves, creating a nautical home that’s both beautiful and relaxing will come much easier.
If you’re ready to browse an endless selection of quality nautical home decor, visit gonautical.com. We have everything needed to design your own perfect oasis, even if you live miles from the nearest shore.

By the early fifties, beach boys around Hawaii were experienced by tourists on vacation on the islands located on their surfboards having long wooden paddles. Today "Stand Upward Paddling" boards tend to be lighter, wider, a lot quicker and come in much bigger varieties of color post design.

A Space that brings in nature and inherits cultural memory. In Chinese culture, it’s always said that there is “earth” and “heaven” amidst mountains and rivers and the root of everything lie between square (fang) and round (yuan). With the “wheel” of the era moving forward, how do human habitats nowadays bring in landscape and natural things?
#gallery-0-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; } #gallery-0-6 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
.
– Vigor – Each piece of gravel and wooden beam pays tribute to nature, and injects simplicity into the bustling city. Sunshine is the warmest nourishment from nature. The semi-open corridor features floor-to-ceiling glass, and the wooden texture creates a simplistic style, all of which helps to break spatial boundaries while blending the space with nature. As the light falls into the negotiation area, each piece of wood is enlivened, and the space is infused with freshness.
Origin – Local sea fishing culture – All rivers flow into the sea, though without the same source. The sea fishing culture in Zhanjiang carries the original aspiration and memories of the local people. The designers analyzed, summarized and extracted unique symbols of the sea fishing culture, and incorporated them into every detail of the sales center. At the entrance foyer, a “picture” on the wall comes into view. By use of different materials such as metal and acrylic, it depicts the daily scenes of local fishermen. Complemented by sunlight and lighting, it takes visitors to embrace the sparkling sea and sunrise. The long black bench characterized by charred wood texture embodies the simple living attitude of subtropical people — obtaining materials from local sources. Above it hangs a decorative painting that draws inspiration from fish fossil, and the bookshelf nearby incorporates boat elements, all of which responds to the local cultural context.
Inheritance – Combination of the dense and sparse – Taking cues from grass mat weaving — a traditional local craft, the pendent art installation above the property model display area inherits profound historical culture via a simplistic and artistic form. With flexible wires interweaving with each other, it seeks to create a tranquil ambience in a free manner. Echoing with the empty ceiling, it appears more aesthetic and dynamic. Spatial aesthetic is not merely about innovation and making breakthrough, but also about inheriting and conveying culture. The book bar is magnificent, which fully draws on the purity and simplicity of nature. The natural wooden texture unifies the visual effects, and seems to immerse people into a forest. Sunlight shines onto books and play with shadows, which produces a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Besides, the shells, clay sculpture and woodblock print add vigor to the tranquil space, and strike a balance. Nature – Poetry of plants and flowers – In the current era, spatial aesthetics is expected to bring daily life back to nature and nurture the soul with simplicity. Design is a magic that creates a sense of rituality for life and also carries the pursuit of poetry and dreamland. Green plants are utilized to create landscape in the model display area, which perfectly blends the art of nature with the aesthetics of living spaces. In addition, the negotiation area also brings in real flowers and plants, allowing people to capture nature at every step. Imagination – Kids’ Play Area – Azure blue and wood color collide in this area, which releases infinite imagination. As encountering with calming wood, the dynamic blue breaks the elegant, simplistic ambience, and creates visual contrast. The half-height partition wall marks off an area that records the happy time kids spend there. Furniture is carefully selected for the space. The unique sofa upholstery fabric that mixes linen with gold threads, the exquisite rattan chair, as well as the end table which features perfect combination of metal edges and a top cut from travertine, all present distinctive characters while harmoniously blending into the entire space.
– Interactive area – Continuing the wooden texture and borrowing Japanese design style, this area is a fully open interactive space. The step-like structure broadens the field of view, balances with the serenity and unity rendered by wooden textures, and hence makes the space more flexible and inclusive. Simple elements are adopted to produce fascinating effects, which is perhaps the greatest charm of the design. Every piece of wood and beam of light here is capable of calming the mind and soul. The design well integrates modern art and natural aesthetics, and brings life to its original simplicity.

Thursday, 19th September 2019 – Voegtlinshoffen, Colmar
Voegtlinshoffen is a tiny village which is not one of the half-timbered confections that so many Alsace villages are, because most of those were destroyed in the course of the Thirty Years’ War and rebuilt afterwards in a more simple style. What is does have is a site that provides stunning views across the Rhine and beyond to the Black Forest and, on clear days, the Alps. What is does have are some excellent wines, including the Hatchbourg grand cru, and it was that which brought us to the village on another gloriously sunny day.
Tumblr media
We’d begun with a delicious breakfast (including a glass of crémant) at the Hostellerie le Marechal, and then checked the car to see if anything had fallen off after our encounter with the ironwork the day before (nothing seemed to have done, but there was a rattle that suggested the exhaust system might have been compromised) so we undertook the 15 minute drive to Voegtlinshoffen and the cellar visit organised by the hotel for us.
Tumblr media
We were going to see a specialist in the crémant on offer at breakfast, Joseph Cattin, where the family have been making wine since 1720. It all started with François Cattin, who was Swiss, and who settled in the village where he was also a builder. They are 11 generations in now and still going strong as one of the largest family owned vineyards in Alsace.
Tumblr media
In 1850 they shifted to wine making exclusively, with Joseph taking over the family-owned Estate just as phylloxera hit at the end of the 19th century. Joseph dedicated his time to finding was to fight this plague, becoming a pioneer of Alsacien viticulture. Meanwhile his brother headed off to Paris and set up a restaurant called La Cigogne (the Stork) which served Alsacien gastronomy to well heeled Parisians and foreign guests, acting as a shop front for the wines his brother was making.
Tumblr media
Almost a century later the 10th generation modernised the estate and started worldwide exports of their products. It’s now being run by Jacques Cattin Junior, who has been in charge of winemaking since 2007, and his wife Anaïs, who runs the international sales department. What they now have is a fantastic range of wines, and a modern winery that includes a rooftop bar where you can try the wines alongside plates of charcuterie and cheeses. We were taken round by the charming Marianne, who showed us around the original winery, where we could see both the old wooden barrels and the hyper-modern temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.
Tumblr media
They even have pipes running under the road to enables the grapes to be crushed on one side of the road in what looks like the original building, and then run straight into the stainless steel tanks in the building on the other side of the road! It’s a most impressive set-up and the wines they produce reflect that.
Tumblr media
After our visit, and an explanation of many of the processes, we sat down with Marianne to try a number of wines. Even using the spittoon, after we got through it seemed like a good idea to get something to eat, and where better than the rooftop bar, the Belvedere, with its phenomenal views over the surrounding landscape. It would also give us the opportunity to discuss which of the wines we’d tried we actually wanted to buy.
Tumblr media
A plate of charcuterie and cheese later (and a free glass of wine with lunch) and we were ready to shop. 6 boxes of wine later we were helped to load the car (after a swift unload to make sure everything went in in the right order) and presented with a bottle of wine that Marianne said was her favourite crémant to add to the haul we’d paid for. We were liking this free wine thing! We were ready to pick our way carefully back to Colmar for the rest of the day.
Tumblr media
Having dropped the car back in the car park, we headed into town to hunt down the Tourist Information office to see what information we could pick up. We kept on getting sidetracked though because Colmar is jaw-droppingly lovely and there were oddities round every corner, like the giant soft toy gingerbread man! At least we understood that gingerbread is very much an Alsace thing. There are those who claim that the crusaders brought it back to Europe, but how true that is I have no idea. Also that the Chinese started it, with Mi-Kong (“honey bread), a delicacy made from wheat flour and honey, fragranced with aromatic plants and baked in the oven. Whatever the case, Alsaciens like it, and it’s everywhere, even made into liquers and spirits that can be added to crémant to make a kir!
Tumblr media
There was an artisans’ market going on in the former Customs House (the Koifhus) which detained us for a while, both looking at what was on offer and getting a look inside the building. It was planned in 1433, and the current building dates to 1480 and two more buildings were added in the 16th century. The condition of the building in the 19th century was so poor that it came close to being demoloshed, but instead it was restored in the late 1890s, when a turret and glazed tiles were added. It was renovated again in 2002 to replace the Renaissance style sandstone balustrade which was removed in 1976. It was used as a warehouse and as a place of taxation for imported and exported goods as well as for meetings of the representatives of the Décapole, the federation of the 10 imperial cities of Alsace. Today it was being used to display a range of attractive good including some glassware that really caught my eye.
Tumblr media
We stopped off to look at the collegiate church of Saint Martin. It dominates the square on which it sits and is as impressive inside as outside. The building itself was constructed between 1235 and 1365 and is a brilliant example of Gothic architecture in Alsace. Needless to say with a city as closely packed as Colmar is, there have been frequent fires, and in 1572 the framework of the south tower and all the roofs were destroyed, so what you can see now is much more modern. It has also undergone several restorations, the most recent in 1982 which gave the archaeologists a chance to have root around. They found foundations of a 1000 year old church as well as traces of extensions from the 11th and 12th centuries.
Tumblr media
It’s an interesting church and there are a number of features that are quite surprising to the modern visitor, including the anti-semitic and downright offensive so-called “Judensäue, a testament to the troubled history of the Jews in Alsace, that came to a ghastly climax in 1349, when they were accused of causing plague by poisoning the wells. On February 14 several hundred Jews were massacred during the Strasbourg pogrom and any remaining Jews were forbidden to settle in the town, being reminded every evening at 10 o’clock by a bell and a municipal herald blowing the “Grüselhorn” that they had to leave. I’m guessing the only reason they stayed in the surrounding towns was the lack of anywhere else they could go, if the prevailing attitude was so vile.
Tumblr media
The interior is quite plain, having lost a lot of its furniture during the French Revolution, but it does still have one of the many Baroque organs built by Johann Andreas Silbermann that are everywhere in the region. There are also a nubmer of medieval altars and statues, and a rare Gothic stained glass window of a beardless Christ. The Isenmann altarpiece, of which more in another post, was originally here as well. In 1462 the municipal painter Caspar Isenmann was commissioned to paint a set of panels dedicated to the life of Christ and he completed the word in three years. In 1720 the altar was removed and the paintings were dispersed. The seven surviving panels have been in the Unterlinden Museum since 1853.
Tumblr media
We eventually made it to the Tourist Information Office were we realised that for what we wanted to do, the Colmar City Card was actually a good deal. It was €32 each for seven days and gave you access to all the museums (six of them, and you could visit as often as you wanted) as well a trip on one of the tourist trains and a boat trip. We went for it, and then decided we’d have a gentle ride round town on the tourist train straight away. I know some people think they’re a waste of effort but I find them a useful way of getting my bearings, as well as a good excuse to have a sit down…
Tumblr media
Afterwards we decided that we had time for one of the museums. We opted for the Musée Bartholdi.
Tumblr media
It’s a museum dedicated to the French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, the man who designed the Statue of Liberty, among other colossal works. The house was his birthplace and is full of works by him. These include a lot of preparatory models for monuments that are actually in Colmar, many of which we would find during our stay. I hadn’t realised he also put forward a design for the fountain on the Quinconces in Bordeaux, and the museum had a model for one of the horses to prove it. What’s there is insane enough. Lord knows what he would have built given half a chance.
Tumblr media
Bartholdi served in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 as a squadron leader of the National Guard, and possibly as a liaison officer to Italian General Giuseppe Garibaldi. As an officer, he took part in the defense of Colmar from Germany, and after the Alsace’s defeat he constructed a number of monuments celebrating French heroism in the defence against Germany. One of those projects was the Lion of Belfort, which is huge. He didn’t do anything by halves, it seems.
Tumblr media
Then in 1871 he he went to the United States where he suggested the idea of a massive statue to be given by the French to the Americans in honor of the centennial of American independence. The result was “Liberty, Illuminating the World” as she’s more correctly known. There were lots of items telling the story of the design and construction, though sadly most of it is in French with no translation into any other languages. This seemed a bit of a shame, really, as it was fine for people like me, but I’m pretty sure a lot of visitors won’t be able to read French and could probably do with some help to understand exactly what was going on.
Tumblr media
We stepped back out later having learned something new, which is never a bad thing. It was time though to quit for the day and go back to the hotel for dinner. The area round the hotel was looking especially lovely so we decided we’d step out from the hotel to look for an aperitif later on.
Travel 2019 – Alsace and Baden, Day 7, Voegtlinshoffen, Colmar Thursday, 19th September 2019 - Voegtlinshoffen, Colmar Voegtlinshoffen is a tiny village which is not one of the half-timbered confections that so many Alsace villages are, because most of those were destroyed in the course of the Thirty Years’ War and rebuilt afterwards in a more simple style.

Ukulele - Hawaii's Most Well-known Musical Instrument
Ukelele ( spelled ukelele in britain, abbreviated to uke; pronounced yoo-kuh-ley-lee [American English] or oo-koo-ley-ley [original Hawaiian]) is really a small, guitar-like lute with four to ten strings. Coded in the 1880s, the ukulele is the Hawaiian interpretation from the Portuguese braguinha. Hawaii's most popular guitar produces big tone and sweet sound. Ukuleles usually come in 4 sizes: Soprano (or what Hawaiians refer to as Standard size), Concert, Tenor , and Baritone. The Solid Body Cutaway is often a more recent innovation. Ukuleles are typically manufactured from wood, although there are a handful of models manufactured from plastic or possibly a composite of plastic and wood. Expensive models are produced from hardwood (e.g.mahogany, kulawood, spruce, and sequoia), the priciest which are manufactured from koa tree. A typical ukulele includes a figure 8 shape like that of the small acoustic guitar. There are also other interesting shape variations for example oval (called pineapple ukulele), boat paddle, and square (usually made from a classic wooden cigar box).
Tumblr media
History Ukulele was taken to the Hawaiians by Portuguese immigrants. To celebrate arriving on August 23, 1879, Joao Fernandes played Portuguese folk songs around the wharf by using a braguinha borrowed from a friend. Hawaiians who witnessed him about the dock where so impressed not only together with his music, but in addition using the speed of his fingers: i felt like they danced throughout the fingerboard. Hence, they known as the instrument "ukulele," meaning "jumping flea." (Queen Lili'uokalani, the final monarch of Hawaii, gave an alternative version for the origins of "ukulele". She thought ukulele meant "the gift that came here," from uku meaning "the gift" and lele meaning "to come.") There are 419 immigrants aboard the ship Ravenscrag, but three people could be the first to ascertain ukulele shops. We were holding Manuel Nunes, Augustine Dias, and Joao Fernandes. Within 10 years following the arrival in the Portuguese, the ukulele became Hawaii's most popular instrument. It is stated that Joao Fernandes was obviously a key behind this, as he spent time and effort playing around Honolulu together with his instrument. Ukelele: A royal endorsement It turned out also from Fernandes that King Kalakaua first heard the songs from your ukulele, but he learned to try out it from Augusto Diaz. He encouraged it had become played during royal gatherings. A patron of arts, King Kalakaua's enthusiasm over ukulele made it more acceptable to individuals of Hawaii. It had been played by Hawaiian all walks of life--- from taro farmers to fishermen to royalties. Other royalties who learned the best way to play included Queen Emma, Queen Lili'uokalani, Prince Leleihoku, and Princess Likelike. The Maker Movement and its discontents
*Via nettime mailing list
James Wallbank:
Fascinating to hear about personal engagement in Making, Graham!
I, too, have been personally, hands-on involved in Making since Access Space's turn towards digital manufacture, and the interface of the physical and the digital, since around 2010.
(For those of you who aren't aware of Access Space, it started as a "DIY Media Lab" which I and various friends who had accreted around "Redundant Technology Initiative" (lowtech.org) in 2000. It re-interpreted donated digital debris as resource, rebuilding computers, installing free operating systems, making them available to participants, and encouraging and supporting creative, self-directed projects.)
Part of the motivation behind Access Space was our hope that digital engagement and skills had the potential to empower. This proved to be the case in the early 2000s, and numerous time-rich participants engaged with Access Space, taught themselves and each other technological skills, and became web designers, graphic designers, technicians or even better-known artists. (Though whether "art" is, in the context of networked global capital, a viable or empowering career for a statistically significant proportion of its participants is, I suggest, in question.)
By 2010 we'd seen far less business incubation, and proportionately fewer participants able to self-teach to a level that it made a real difference to their life prospects or creative leverage. We saw that hardware and software skills devalued as pre-installed devices became cheaper, and that the digital realm was becoming dominated by global digital services, including social media, that, while they didn't do a great job, diverted the vast majority of potential digital design clients away from bespoke, local service providers.
In short, the window of opportunity suggested by the first phase of the graphical internet was closing. While, in 2000, speed-reading an HTML primer, combined with a little design flair, a few copywriting skills, and some sales confidence could make you a web designer in a month, in 2010 this was no longer the case.
We concluded that when any new technology is introduced, there's a period of opportunity, before that technology has become fully adopted or systematised, in which the individual can get involved, and (in a short time, with a level of skill only one page ahead of their clients) can empower themselves, converting an interest into saleable skills, products or resources.
We've seen the same window open and close with blockchain (which I believe to be illusory, unproductive, and, in the end, simply gambling). A vanishingly few people made money though cryptocurrency trading, but now it's dominated by grinding Ponzi schemes, viral mining fiddles, or blockchain is being repurposed by multinationals. The moment of opportunity for the individual has passed.
At Access Space we saw Fab Lab or "Maker Technologies" as a more genuinely productive line of approach, and, even though many of the technologies had been around for a decade or more, saw that the window of opportunity had not yet closed. As technology requiring significant physical engagement and investment (you need to buy real-world machines and materials!) the timescale of its adoption and exploitation by capital would be far slower.
So at Access Space we raised money (thanks EU structural funds!) and bought a CNC, a Lasercutter, a 3D Printer, Arduinos, Raspberry Pis, a digital embroidery machine... and set about a research partnership to explore the potentials of these technologies for creating local jobs and enterprises.
In the end, for those not in the highfalutin' and disconnected academic realm (sorry, researchers - you're my friends really!) a key element of whether a technology is empowering or not is "Can you get paid for using it?"
And "using it to engage and educate" doesn't count - actually using it to create product or paid-for service is key. In Access Space's particular case, we took the position that we didn't care about "industrial transformation", nor "increasing supply-chain efficiencies". We cared most about actual, tangible jobs in Sheffield, not abstract (however numerically significant) jobs in San Fransisco or Shenzen.
The research engaged with local makers, both individuals and startup enterprises, and concluded that the technology we looked at with most potential to generate local jobs and enterprise was lasercutting, and the one with the least potential was 3D Print. Even seven years later, we still agree.
This failure, it seems to me, to engage with the economics of making is exactly what's thus far marginalised the "Maker Movement". It's also true of the Fab Lab - while it's a powerful context for education, the economics of fabbing just don't work.
To give a simple example: one of the Fab Lab founding principals its to engage with a wide range of materials and processes, on a wide range of scales. For a business to become profitable, the imperative is EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. To optimise manufacture, it's necessary to reduce the number of processes, and minimise the variety of materials. In terms of marketing, the key is to focus on a particular product and market. It is supremely irrelevant to a person who wants to buy a new pair of shoes to know that you can also make customised wifi amplifiers, repair bicycles, design lamps or sell toy robots.
Shoe advertisers (physical or digital) sell shoes, not "Anything... uhh... including shoes".
The Maker Movement comes out of academia, where the core product is learning. To the business world, high skill is the enemy. Skilled processes are expensive - you want your highly skilled people to be doing as much as possible, over as wide an area as possible, so you can employ as few of them as possible.
So, with this context, my wife Lisa and I opened "Makers". It's a shop, where we make things. You can commission us to make things, or come and make things with us. We run educational workshops, too - but it's not the mainstay of our business. We did this with the intention of further exploring the opportunities afforded by digital manufacture, with a view to uncovering the sustainable business models that might emerge from it. Having just done two and a half years of research into the employment potentials of digital manufacture, I thought we might have a head-start.
Makers is now coming up to its fourth birthday, and we haven't gone bankrupt yet. (Not to show off, but that fact alone apparently puts us into the top 5% of UK retail!) We've discovered a whole load of stuff about digital and analogue making, the economics and sustainability of local manufacture, that we just didn't know, and we've not seen the wider Maker Movement really touch upon.
We've rejected whole categories of product lines, and focussed on particular processes and products to make our living. We still make a wide range of things, and we're constantly experimenting with new ideas, but bearing in mind that we need to create things that aren't characteristic of the typical maker-space product ("really fascinating, but I have no use for it!"). The objects we make must have the key characteristic that people are prepared to put their hands in their pockets and buy them - for a sensible price - and that means that they must be appealing.
We have a range of clients for our making services, including individuals and businesses. For individual clients, we're typically making home decor, but for micro-businesses we're at the cutting edge of business incubation - people come in with an idea (often its something crafty, with a very specialist market) and we help them design and produce their products.
But... get this... around 80% of clients who commission us to make things, or make things with us, are women. It's a completely different demographic from the typical "maker dude" who inhabits our friendly neighbourhood makerspace. Our repeat making clients are often making money out of making - we're helping to design and manufacture stuff that they sell. There's also an interesting line of products that helps people to sell - signage, packaging, point-of-sale displays.
We're also thinking about how making impacts on our locality. Traditional retail is in freefall - but we're finding that shops are being replaced by "makey" and "crafty" services. Our shop was (twenty five years ago) a greengrocer. Now it's "Makers". On our little block of 16 shops we see computer and phone repairs, a dressmaker, bicycle repairs, baking, and of course, a barber and takeaway food shops. Very nearby we find micro-brewers, woodworkers, picture framers, upholsterers, photographers...
These sorts of services seem, over time, to be replacing the once ubiquitous mini-marts and retail outlets that have been displaced by online shopping.
Recently, we've been a research partner in research into making (MakEY - Making in Early Years) which has been very interesting, but again does what academia is wont to do - assume that the product is learning. In my view, far from being over the hill, making may now be transforming from academic and hobbyist interest to actual economic models. I think it has huge potential to revitalise localities and communities, and I urge researchers to get involved. (Will lecture for food!)
But let's lose the glamour - and start thinking about real products, real places, and real business models. Want an example of "sustainable superlocal digital manufacture"? How about key cutting? Yeah, it's not so cool now, is it?
All the best,
James =====

I work a lot these days with the maritime, a technical culture of wooden boat repair that in Essex, I also worked a lot with people who restore old telephone exchanges and people who build steam engines - through having run a free media space in 00 ties were we hacked, pirated recycled at will. Among the many things that are interesting about these technical cultures is that they produce value for those engaged in the process - but this value has only a limited relation to the accumulation of capital. The maker phenomena could be seen in this context as a way to monetise the non-discursive technical cultures - a tinkering world that has an unbroken line back to at least the enlightenment but probably before. In 1799 the Royal Institution of Great Britain was established to put science to work for particular class and keep the theoretical away from a populace that presented a threat (the demon of the French revolution) - The Royal Institution was a place where an artisan class built technicals object but where not allowed in, or allowed to lecture.
Faraday had to have elocution lessons, learn how to eat properly before being allowed to lecture and even then had to be deemed a genius to escape the his class background and address gentleman. What Im trying to suggest is that non-discursive technical tinkering exist within many technical cultures and long may it remain so.
I'll tag on a little introduction this I wrote.
“The science which compels the inanimate limbs of the machinery, by their construction, to act purposefully, as an automaton, does not exist in the worker’s consciousness, but rather acts upon him through the machine as an alien power.” Karl Marx(1858)
In 1958 the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon published On the Mode of Technical Objects to address just this form of cultural alienation implicit in the quote above. He writes, among other things, about two ways in which people come to know technical objects. He says technology viewed from a child's eye, which I imagine he is seeing as, naive and innocent we gain an implicit, non-reflective, habitual tendency.
A baby strapped into a buggy, is given a parent's mobile phone and is happily learning to play a game but cannot yet utter the words to express these interactions. Simondon then imagines an inverse, a trained adult engineer, reflective, self-aware using rational knowledge that is elaborated through science. Something like an Apple engineer who creates closed technologies imagining its users still strapped in that buggy unable to articulate their critical needs.
Simondon seeks out another form of relationship with technical objects which he finds in the Enlightened Encyclopaedism of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert (Encyclopédie (1751–1777)) in which concrete knowhow is abstracted and assembled into a technical orchestra. Contemporarily, is it worth considering our networked technologies in this mode of encyclopaedism? An evolving off-grid, red-neck, student, coder, geek pedagogy producing technical information, hacks, howto’s, shakedowns, and open source code repositories, that respond to an evolving technical culture. This technical republic is nothing new, it’s genealogies can be traced to and beyond the amateur experimentalistsof the London Electrical Society and William Sturgeon (1783 - 1850) and the artisanal formation that knowledge can be contained in the object built and it’s functioning is its explanation.
Is a tinkering internet a critical technical republic? A social space that potentially can break down the state actors with encryption, corporations by opening up software and proprietary technics by hacking them open, making things public? Is the marginal technics on a teenagers dirty bedroom, the dank basement of a bored salaryman, the ham radio garden shed a strategy to unfold the clean room and its magic men in white coats? Or is this largely a white male space that has eradicated other forms of objectivity and subjectivity from view? How can we attempt to instate a devolved technics that refuses misogyny, racialisation and yet envisages technology outside of the paradigm of human slave or potential human enslaver.

Looks good, I'd like to build a recycling machine and melt down some plastic at some point.
On a more local and mainstream level, my town has a show that sells 'upcycled' furniture which has been done up (new handles, repainted with flower motifs etc). Recycling and maker culture is great but I'd like to see more projects which are local or community oriented: this is essential to truly address the problem of waste. We separate glass in my borough, maybe we could feed that into local double glazing firms, or something else.

Riva runabout
Tumblr media
“The sound of the engines, the wood, the beautiful sweep of the hull, the performance,” he says, listing the attributes.Ĭarlo Riva’s creation is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its launch in August. Galassi, who had wanted an Aquarama as a child, believes that the Aquarama is the most perfect design ever. We didn’t find any big seas running around Lake Iseo, but the lake, with mountains in the distance, was a perfect backdrop to this 52-year-old beauty. The hull had been designed for ocean running-after Riva had been chided by a longtime friend for building “lake boats.” And the side throttles were also modeled on a car to make it more intuitive for new owners who were not necessarily boaters. The oversized steering wheel felt perfect for a boat that would’ve been compared to a Cadillac or Lincoln in its day. The hand-built wooden hulls were built on a production line like cars for quality control and timely delivery.Īt the dock, Gala had a stately presence, with pinstripes on the light-colored mahogany foredeck, a beautiful reddish-tinted hull, gleaming chrome, and a wraparound automotive-style windshield which was radical for the day. Riva had decided early on to model the Aquarama after the finest luxury cars with throaty American marine engines ( Gala had twin 320 hp Rivas, which were modified Crusaders). Unlike most boats, the helm is on the left side. Owned by Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi, Gala was a stunning wooden boat, with ivory-colored upholstery, a Calax-style steering wheel inspired by a 1958 Chrysler 300, and side throttles. The best thing about Skógafoss (well, besides the actual foss, which is gorgeous), is Skógar, the nearby town.  Just outside of Skógar is a museum, the aptly named Skógar Museum, which preports to be about Icelandic history and culture -- and in fact it is, with a model turf building as a part of the grounds, excellent exemplars of period boats and fishing gear, etc etc.  But it is so much more.
DH and I went to visit on our honeymoon (he was stationed in Rekjavík) and we actually got to meet Þórður Tómasson, who took us around and showed us a lot of stuff.  I feel like Mr. Tómasson visited every garage and tag sale in Iceland and brought back whatever he could -- I distinctly remember a wooden hope chest with decidedly Japanese scenes carved into the sides, and I to this day I regret finding out whether it in fact came from Japan, or was carved by an Icelandic wood sculptor in the Japanese style.
My favorite part of the museum was the section -- in the basement of the folk museum, I think -- of native fauna.  There were skeletons and taxidermied animals and birds.
And then there was Hoggi.
Hoggi was someone’s pet cat.  When Hoggi died, the owner donated the animal to the exhibit.  So Hoggi’s skeleton is carefully preserved and presented, along with an informational plaque.  Maybe I’m just a morbid person, but was delighted and charmed at the idea that Hoggi was considered a native, and a suitable ambassador for the fauna section.
