Despite their sturdy design, proper upkeep is necessary for these cars. This includes basic tasks such as cleaning, checking screws and bearings, greasing them, and replacing worn out parts.
After driving, it is crucial to clean the car thoroughly. For dusty conditions, compressed air or a soft brush and damp cloth can be used. Extra care should be taken when cleaning around the bearings to prevent faster wear and tear caused by dirt and dust.
Please note: Do not clean the car with running water. Once finished, be sure to inspect all components for any looseness, particularly the screws on the servo arm, steering linkage, lower shock absorbers, suspension arms, and upper links.
These screws are subject to movement while driving and may become loose. Gently tighten them using the appropriate tool - over-tightening can cause damage to the threads.
After inspecting the bearings, it is important to also check their condition. Pay attention to any excess play in the wheel bearings, as this can cause the tires to wobble.
If you notice an increase in play after driving, it may be a sign of wear and tear on the bearings. This can lead to decreased spinning of the wheels and put strain on the motor.
To prolong the life of your bearings, make sure to regularly clean and lubricate them, especially after wet driving conditions. A few drops of oil is all that is needed for proper greasing. Keep in mind that outer bearings tend to wear out quickly and should be replaced promptly when necessary.
Additionally, you can test the drive train bearings by gently wiggling the outdrive and observing any play between them. Rolling the chassis on a desk should also be smooth and quiet without any resistance or noise.
Superficial cleaning and inspection are enough with the electric components. It’s good to check that the speed controller’s fan works and can spin freely. Also check that all the components are not coming loose. Check that all the wires are undamaged and that they’re not getting in the way of the drivetrain.

Navigating the Waves: Exploring RC Boats | Hobby Store
Introduction to RC Boats
While RC airplanes and cars remain popular among modelers, there is another area of RC that can offer an equally, if not more enjoyable experience.
RC boats provide a unique and diverse range of options, catering to performance enthusiasts, casual sailors, and those with a love for vintage runabouts.
In addition to aesthetics, factors such as power source and the choice between building or buying a Ready-To-Run boat should also be considered.
Types of RC Boats
Scale boats
Scale boats emulate various types of boating, resembling and functioning like their full-size counterparts.
While some may be equipped with glow, gas, or steam engines, most scale boats utilize electric power. Unlike high-speed electric hydroplanes and deep vees, which prioritize velocity, scale electrics typically employ lower RPM, lower amperage, and higher torque motors.
Tumblr media
These boats generally operate on six or twelve volt lead acid or gel batteries, offering extended run times ranging from 30 minutes to several hours on a single charge. Speed is regulated using either a mechanical or electronic speed control that enables forward and reverse motion.
One channel on the radio manipulates the speed while another controls steering via a rudder.
In addition to the boat kit you will usually require a two or more channel radio system (on a surface frequency), an electric motor, a speed control, running hardware including shaft and propeller, a battery, and a charger for the battery.
Racing boats
Racing boats come in various forms, such as hydroplanes, tunnel hulls, and deep vees. These classifications are determined by the shape of the boat's bottom. Both tunnel hulls and hydroplanes have flatter bottoms and ride on a smaller surface area when at high speeds.
Tumblr media
Hydroplanes glide on two side sponsons and the back end of the hull, while tunnel hulls run on two extended sponsons on either side. They are typically powered by outboard motors due to their lack of a central hull for support.
Both types of boats require smooth water conditions and are not well-suited for choppy waters.
The additional items needed will vary depending on the specific boat and level of pre-made components. Usually, you will need a two channel surface frequency radio, an appropriate motor for the model, running hardware, and for electric boats, a battery pack and charger.
For racing boats with electric set-ups, the required support equipment is similar to that of R/C cars. More details on this can be found in our Introduction to R/C Cars. Most electric racing boats are available as almost ready to run packages, which often include the necessary running hardware, motor, and speed control. In some cases, a radio may even be included in the package.
The sailboat
The sailboat is a popular choice for boating, offering scale realism and the option for relaxation or excitement.
With inexpensive operating costs, it operates like a full-size boat using wind power. One channel on the radio controls the sails, while another controls the steering rudder.
Tumblr media
Depending on your point of sail, you can adjust the sails using a winch or sail arm servo. Sailboats are typically categorized based on their sail area. To complement your kit, you will need a two-channel radio (on a surface frequency) and possibly a sail control servo or winch for larger models.
Minimal field equipment is necessary for most sailboats.
Wrapping Up
In conclusion, navigating the waves with RC boats is an exhilarating hobby that combines skill, technology, and fun. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned enthusiast, Campbelltown Hobbies offers a wide range of RC boats to suit every interest and experience level.

Introduction to RC Planes: A Fascinating Hobby
Welcome to the world of radio-controlled model airplanes. It is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling and rewarding hobbies out there, combining a variety of diverse interests. Where else can you explore aerodynamics, woodworking, composite materials, electronics, mechanics, small motors, drafting, artistry, the great outdoors, and club activities all at once than with a Radio Control Airplane.
One must understand that most radio-controlled model aircraft are not toys. They function on the same principles as a full-scale aircraft, with the only variation being size and weight.
These models can reach speeds of 20 to 200 KPH, while the average trainer flies at 50 to 80 KPH. They cannot be flown in ordinary backyards; they need ample space! Moreover, just like their full-size counterparts, controlling them properly requires skill and practice.
It is not as simple as pressing a button for takeoff or landing - it takes effort and expertise to operate them smoothly.
After becoming familiar with the hobby, many individuals come to understand its complexity beyond initial beliefs—it is not simply a game for young boys.
And the process of acquiring new skills adds to the enjoyment and fulfillment of the hobby. It is far from dull and guarantees long-lasting pleasure, particularly if you begin on a positive note.
Getting Started: Basics for Beginner Hobbyists
The plane
Discover the various types of RC planes, including:
- Trainer Planes: Perfect for beginners, they offer stability and effortless control, providing a seamless introduction to flying.
- Sport Planes: Designed for leisurely flights, these models strike a balance between agility and stability, making them a popular choice among enthusiasts.
- Scale Planes: Immerse yourself in history and craftsmanship with scale replicas of real aircraft. These planes are a delight for collectors and aviation history enthusiasts.

Electric vs. Fuel-Powered: Making Your Propulsion Choice
The heart of your RC plane lies in its propulsion system. Electric and fuel-powered engines each have their advantages, catering to different preferences and skill levels.
Electric planes offer quiet operation, and simple maintenance, and are well-suited for beginners. On the other hand, Fuel-powered planes provide more power and longer flight times but require more maintenance and expertise to operate effectively.
The radio
In addition to an aircraft, a radio is necessary for controlling it. Most aircraft radios come with four or more channels and all the required components, including rechargeable battery packs.
When purchasing your first radio, consider looking for "buddy box" capability. This allows two transmitters to be connected via cable, with one held by the instructor and the other by the student.
The student can control the model as long as the instructor holds a spring-loaded trainer switch on their transmitter. If the student encounters trouble, the instructor can release the switch and regain full control of the model. This feature can greatly reduce learning time and provide added assurance for novice pilots against accidents.
Learning to Fly: Essential Skills and Techniques
Important points to remember when flying your rc airplane:
Avoid flying too far from your position, as doing so may result in losing sight of your aircraft. This can cause disorientation and make it difficult to determine its orientation or direction. Such a scenario increases the risk of losing control and ultimately crashing.
In the same way, avoid flying your rc airplane directly above you. This can also cause confusion as you try to look upward and follow the plane with your head. It becomes difficult to gauge the plane's position in relation to the ground. Instead, keep the plane within your sight in front of you or on the sides - never overhead or behind you.
Avoid flying directly in front of the sun, whether you are wearing sunglasses or if there is cloud cover. Doing so could result in immediate and temporary sight impairment, which could have serious consequences.
Keep in mind, as you fly your rc airplane towards yourself, the turns will be opposite to what you are used to. In other words, left will now be right and right will now be left. It may take some time to adjust to this "reverse control" or "reverse coordination," but with practice, you'll become more comfortable with it.
Pro tip: If you get disoriented when the aircraft is approaching and making a turn, simply move the stick toward the side of the lower wing. For instance, if the plane is turning to its right while flying towards you, adjust the stick towards the lower right side to correct the turn.
Always keep flying your rc plane in open space, well away from people, animals and property.
Also, fly well clear of trees - they seem to have a very magnetic effect and attract model planes!
Ensure that you maintain a safe altitude while flying - being too close to the ground limits your ability to correct any potential problems. It is recommended to fly at a minimum of "2 mistakes high" for optimal safety.
Ensure your turns remain gentle and avoid over-correcting. The main cause of crashes for beginner rc airplane pilots is excessive correction, meaning too much use of the transmitter sticks. Maintain a consistent pace and smooth movements at all times!
Overall use common sense. Don’t do anything beyond your current abilities.
Intermediate Level Flying
What constitutes an intermediate level?
It can vary depending on location and club affiliations.
A beginner would generally still be under the guidance of an instructor, while an intermediate pilot would be able to perform basic aerobatics with their remote control plane.
At this level, you should feel comfortable flying most sport-type aircraft. For example, I find Hangar 9 warbirds to have a sport-like performance and are relatively easy to handle if you have confidence in your takeoff and landing abilities.
Being advanced means being proficient in more complex manoeuvres and comfortable operating aircraft with minimal separation between the centre of pressure and centre of gravity, as well as those with high wing loading.
