Alison Moritsugu is a contemporary artist who uses logs and stumps as canvases for her beautiful paintings to deliver a mindful commentary on our relationship with the environment.

Alison Moritsugu was born and raised in Hawai‘i and left the islands after high school. She received a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She lives and works in Beacon, NY. For the 2006 exhibition Survive/Thrive/Alive, she created a site-specific wall installation for the entrance foyer in the Glyndor Gallery.

Sometimes in a northwestern conifer forest I come across a tree that sprouted on a nurse stump which has long since decayed away. The silhouette of the stump can still be seen in the contours of the living tree's roots; I often call these ghost stumps. This picturesque individual grows on the Red Fox Trail at Tryon Creek State Natural Area in Portland, OR. You can read more about nurse stumps here.
