Feathursday Herons
Our friend, Wisconsin wood engraver Tony Drehfal, recently sent us an early proof of his engraving entitled Heronry that he is currently editioning. The engraving depicts a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) rookery near Nashotah, Wisconsin. He had begun the engraving on seamed boxwood and was about 70% complete before he and his wife Jeanne left on a trip for 3 months. When they returned, he discovered that the block had dried and split into four sections along the seams in the dry heat of his studio. He thought the block was ruined!
Still, he set the block on edge in a moist environment for a few months and the gaps had closed considerably. In a few more months they closed even more. He then placed the block in a humidity chamber (just a plastic bin with damp sponges) and in a few weeks the cracks were completely closed. He sealed the seams with glue and was able to complete the engraving. Phew!
Besides being a generous donor to our Special Collections, Drehfal is also a member of both the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN), the national organization for American wood engravers, and its venerable British counterpart, the Society of Wood Engravers. He currently sits on the WEN Board of Directors.

Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch, 1898-1972) Stars, 1948 wood engraving on Japan paper, 32 x 26 cm
"Two chameleons are contained within the cage-like shape of the central compound; Escher writes that they were chosen as its inhabitants 'because they are able to cling by their legs and tails to the beams of their cage as it swirls through space.' The chameleon on the left sticks out his tongue, perhaps in commentary; H. S. M. Coxeter observes that the tongue has an unusual spiral-shaped tip."

Wood Engraving Wednesday
PETER HOLLAND
This engraving of Magnolias by English artist Peter Holland (1915-2004), printed from the original block, is from 2020 Vision: Nineteen Wood Engravers, One Collector, and the Artists Who Inspired Them, compiled and introduced by collector Nigel Hamway, edited by English wood engraver Peter Lawrence, and printed in 2020 by Patrick Randle’s Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in an edition of 340 copies for the 100th anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers.
Holland himself never exhibited or sold a wood engraving in his life. He was an architect by profession who worked for the Ministry of Works. He taught himself wood engraving in his spare time, producing over 80 finely executed, closely observed images, mainly of the natural world. He was deeply inspired by his friendships with master engravers John Farleigh and Monica Poole. Holland was also the father of the editor of 2020 Vision Nigel Hamway's oldest friend, and inspired Hamway to begin his collection of wood engravings. Hamway included this print in the book as an homage to his mentor and because it is Holland's own homage to the work of Farleigh and Poole. Peter Holland's son Paul writes:
My father continued to engrave until late in his life and loved going to the shop of T N Lawrence in Bleeding Heart Yard to buy blocks. He was a prolific sketcher and sought inspiration for his engravings from his drawings, as well as the cottage and its beautiful garden where he and his wife Mavis lived for over fifty years.

Frederick Sandys (1829-1904) "Helen and Cassandra" (1866) "Helen of Troy" (1867) Pre-Raphaelite The scene depicts Cassandra berating Helen as Troy burns in the background with Helen chewing on a lock of hair in the manner of a spoiled child. This composition portrays the same sulky sideways glance and lowered forehead as seen in the illustration.

Just opened my online shop with some new goodies! I have two new engraving prints, a handful of "patch-pins" (AKA linocut patches turned into pins!), and a few printed greeting cards! I also have a ton of other stuff available, from other linocut prints to some printed sweatshirts.
Take a look!
