Taking My Dad to Baseball Spring Training — Reader Success Story
Today I want to share a story from TPG reader Matt, who got great value on hotel awards for two separate trips to Florida. Here’s what he had to say:
My dad is a huge Washington Nationals fan, so in the fall of 2016 when I was trying to figure out what to get him for Christmas, I knew I wanted to do something baseball-related. The team had a new spring training facility in West Palm Beach opening in 2017, so I decided to look into booking a trip for us to check it out.
I’ve had the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from Amex for years, so I had a significant balance of Starpoints. I started researching Starwood hotels in West Palm Beach and ran into a roadblock: there were none. The closest one I could find was over 40 miles away from the ballpark, so I decided to hold off on booking anything.
Right around the same time, the merger between SPG and Marriott was finalized, and they started allowing members to transfer points between the two programs. I did a quick search on the Marriott website and found a nice Residence Inn less than 10 miles from the ballpark for 25,000 Marriott Rewards points per night. I transferred 34,000 Starpoints to Marriott at a 1:3 ratio, and then booked five nights for 100,000 points thanks to the fifth night free benefit. Marriott also matched my Starwood Gold status, so we were upgraded from a studio to a two-bedroom suite. It was perfect! The normal rate for the room was over $350 per night, so I was able to get a value of over 5 cents per Starpoint.
Fast forward to this past Christmas, when my Mom decided to take my Dad on a return trip to spring training. The same Residence Inn we stayed in before was going for over $2,400, so I looked into it to see how I could reduce the cost. I didn’t have as many Starpoints saved up, but I had just received an email offer to buy them at a 35% discount. I bought the maximum of 30,000 points for $683, and then transferred them to Marriott with 4,000 of my own points to book another five night stay. My mom was ecstatic that I saved her over $1,700 on the hotel, and she’s using some of that savings to buy better tickets and a new jersey for my dad.
The ability to transfer points between Marriott and SPG is one of the best benefits to come out of the merger between the two companies. I hope they don’t get rid of it anytime soon!
Matt and his father were upgraded to a two-bedroom suite during their stay at the Residence Inn West Palm Beach.
The integration of Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest has been a boon for award travelers. Since the two programs merged in 2016, members have been able to match elite status and transfer points freely between them, but unique benefits (like Marriott’s Hotel + Air packages and Starwood’s airline transfer partners) have remained intact. I’m with Matt in wanting those opportunities last, and after Marriott recently signed co-branded card agreements with both Chase and Amex, I think we have good reasons to be hopeful.
Matt’s story is a good example of why the Starwood Amex cards are a good option for everyday spending. If Matt had been using the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card over the years, his balance might not have been sufficient to book that initial five-night stay. Marriott has announced plans to offer new co-branded cards for both programs in 2018; we don’t yet know what the benefits on those cards will look like, but higher earning rates should be a priority.
I love this story and I want to hear more like it! To thank Matt for sharing his experience (and for allowing me to post it online), I’m sending him a $200 airline gift card to enjoy on future travels, and I’d like to do the same for you. Please email your own award travel success stories to [email protected]; be sure to include details about how you earned and redeemed your rewards, and put “Reader Success Story” in the subject line. Feel free to also submit your most woeful travel mistakes. If your story is published in either case, I’ll send you a gift to jump-start your next adventure.
Safe and happy travels to all, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Wood Engraving Wednesday
JOANNE PRICE
On this first Wood Engraving Wednesday in November, we mark the day with this wood engraving by Kentucky artist and engraver Joanne Price from the 2020 calendar of the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN). Price is the founder of Starpointe Studio, specializing in printmaking and book arts in rural Kentucky. Price has been President of the Wood Engravers’ Network and is an elected member of Britain's Society of Wood Engravers. About her work, Price writes:
My ideas and images are interpreted through the bold but delicate marks of wood engraving. Wood engraving’s intimate scale and slow pace provide a welcome respite from our cyber-fast world. It is charmingly mysterious and feeds my need for quiet concentration and hands-on creative productivity. My ideas emerge from folk/fairy tales, everyday life, and nature, and are often explored through series.
Price maintains a particular interest in the environment and the natural world:
Wood engraving’s historic use in science and literature provides a natural vehicle for these ideas. Utilizing micro and macro perspectives I strive to connect art and science in a way that I hope pushes past mere illustration.
Our copy of the calendar is a donation of WEN member and Wisconsin resident Tony Drehfal.

8 Hot Hotels Opening by March 2017
Here’s a look at the coolest new hotels opening around the world by the end of March, including two noteworthy Four Points by Sheraton hotels in Melbourne and Montenegro, and a millennial-friendly offering by Wyndham in Fort Lauderdale.
1. Made
Location: New York’s NoMad neighborhood
Number of Rooms: 108
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Made is a new hotel brand from Sam Gelin, founder of Craft Hospitality, a company that creates events like the NYC Craft Distillers Festival and DC Wine Fest. 2. The airy, woodsy design is by LA’s Studio MAI, whose other hotels have included Gjelina in Venice Beach and the South Congress Hotel in Austin. 3. To combat New York’s notoriously small rooms, Made’s will feature an integrated wall-mounted racking system that does triple duty as a desk, closet and TV cabinet that can be customized according to each guest.
Loyalty Program: N/A
Price: From $300 per night. Book with the Citi Prestige card to earn 3x points on your stay and take advantage of its nifty 4th night free perk, or the Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3x points on travel purchases — the Chase Sapphire Preferred card lets you earn 2x points on travel as well.

2. Four Points by Sheraton Kolašin
Location: Kolašin, Montenegro
Number of Rooms: 72
Three Interesting Facts: 1. This new-build Four Points has a chalet vibe that favors wood beams, flagstone and windows that offer expansive views of the surrounding forest and mountains. 2. Kolašin is located nearly 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) above sea level, about 80 miles inland from the country’s buzzy coastline and on the fringe of Biogradska Gora National Park, one of the three rainforests in Europe. You can ski in the winter and in the summer, hike the river canyons and row along the sapphire lake. 3. The somewhat remote location means this hotel is stacked with amenities, including two restaurants, a fitness center, car rental counter, currency exchange services and a swanky spa furnished with its own Turkish hammam.
Loyalty Program: Starwood
Price: From $86 or 10,000 Starpoints per night. Book with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express so you can earn up to 5x Starpoints on eligible Starwood stays.
Image courtesy of the Four Points by Sheraton Kolašin’s Facebook page.
3. Four Points by Sheraton Melbourne Docklands
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Number of Rooms: 273
Three Interesting Facts: 1. This hotel is in the Docklands, a former suburb of Melbourne the city annexed in 2007 that’s home to many marinas, The Melbourne Star (a giant Ferris wheel), Etihad Stadium, a farmers’ market on Sundays, fireworks displays on Fridays and other fun attractions that make it a great spot for families. 2. The clean gray-and-navy rooms aren’t especially distinctive, but all have dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows that let in tons of natural light. For a real treat, request one with views of Victoria Harbour and the Bolte Bridge. 3. All stays before September 28, 2017, qualify to earn double Starpoints.
Loyalty Program: Starwood
Price: From $170 or 10,000 Starpoints per night. Book with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express so you can earn up to 5x Starpoints on eligible Starwood stays.
Image courtesy of the Four Points by Sheraton Melbourne’s Facebook page.
4. Brown Jerusalem
Location: Jerusalem, Israel
Number of Rooms: 23
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Brown Jerusalem is part of Brown Hotels, a Tel Aviv-based boutique group from lifelong hospitality veteran Leon Avigad, with several other properties in Israel and one in Croatia. 2. The hotel occupies an Ottoman-era villa complete with a tea room, a rooftop terrace, exposed stone walls and marble floors. 3. The scene downstairs will draw just as much attention as the sultry rooftop lounge upstairs, with a subterranean Cave Bar housed in the residence’s former water well.
Loyalty Program: N/A
Price: From $265 per night. Book with the Citi Prestige card to earn 3x points on your stay and take advantage of its nifty 4th night free perk, or the Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3x points on travel purchases — the Chase Sapphire Preferred card lets you earn 2x points on travel as well.
Image courtesy of The Brown Jerusalem’s Facebook page.
5. The Silo
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Number of Rooms: 28
Three Interesting Facts: 1. The Silo occupies six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in a building designed out of the shell of a historic grain silo on Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. 2. While the developers, Royal Portfolio, might not be a household name here in the US, in Africa, the brand is known for its award-winning safari lodge in Greater Kruger National Park, a Residence in Franschhoek, the Birkenhead House in Hermanus and The One Above penthouse, also in Cape Town. 3. Even with a favorable exchange rate, The Silo is a pricey place to lay your head in South Africa — Royal Portfolio ups the value proposition with special perks like an exclusive rooftop pool, huge suites and keyed access to private after-hours tours at the museum.
Loyalty Program: N/A
Price: From $890 per night. Book with the Citi Prestige card to earn 3x points on your stay and take advantage of its nifty 4th night free perk, or the Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3x points on travel purchases — the Chase Sapphire Preferred card lets you earn 2x points on travel as well.
Image courtesy of Royal Portfolio’s Facebook page.
6. TRYP Maritime by Wyndham
Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Number of Rooms: 150
Three Interesting Facts: 1. After acquiring TRYP from a Spanish hotel chain in 2010, Wyndham turned it into its millennial-friendly brand, similar to Hilton’s Canopy or Marriott’s Moxy. Because these properties — at least the ones in the US — tend to be newer or recently renovated, they’re often good bets from a company that doesn’t offer a ton of chic or high-quality options. 2. Looking for the beach? You won’t find that here. TRYP Maritime rests among the yachts on New River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, so you’re close to the airport and the cruise port, about a 15-minute drive from Fort Lauderdale’s sandy beaches. 3. Amenities include an indoor basketball court, Vita Course and complimentary shuttle service.
Loyalty Program: Wyndham Rewards
Price: No prices were available at press time, but rooms will be available starting at 15,000 Rewards points per night, as per Wyndham’s brand-wide policy.
Image courtesy of TRYP Maritime by Wyndham’s Facebook page.
7. Unico 20°87° Riviera Maya
Location: Riviera Maya, Mexico
Number of Rooms: 448
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Unico 20°87° Riviera Maya — the numbers refer to the hotel’s coordinates — is an adults-only all-inclusive resort… but don’t stop reading. It’s super luxurious, with amenities that include 24-hour room service and dedicated Anfitrións (hosts) for each room. 2. “No itinerary necessary” is the hotel’s key mission, so expect plenty of impromptu programming throughout the resort, from mezcal tastings to ice cream pop-ups, which happen roughly every 30 minutes. 3. Cueva Siete, one of four on-site restaurants, features a rotating chef program — first up is Christian Bravo, a Top Chef Mexico contestant and native of Puebla.
Loyalty Program: N/A
Price: From $400 per night. Book with the Citi Prestige card to earn 3x points on your stay and take advantage of its nifty 4th night free perk, or the Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3x points on travel purchases — the Chase Sapphire Preferred card lets you earn 2x points on travel as well.
Image courtesy of Unico 20°87° Riviera Maya.
8. The Exchange
Location: Cardiff, Wales, UK
Number of Rooms: 200
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Located just a short walk from the Bristol Channel in the south of Wales, this property lives in the old bones of the historic (est. 1886) Coal Exchange. 2. Developer Signature Living is serious about preserving the building’s past through sensitive renovation and an on-site museum. 3. All rooms are suite size and seriously luxurious, featuring rich fabrics, whirlpool tubs and furniture that looks like it was lifted from a palace.
Loyalty Program: N/A
Price: From $111 per night. Book with the Citi Prestige card to earn 3x points on your stay and take advantage of its nifty 4th night free perk, or the Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3x points on travel purchases — the Chase Sapphire Preferred card lets you earn 2x points on travel as well.
