A Real Pain

Jesse Eisenberg is in love with faces, or at least with what he can do with them. In A REAL PAIN (2024, Hulu, Disney+), his second feature as a writer-director, some of the most moving shots are simply silent closeups, particularly the opening and closing shots of Kieran Culkin just sitting in an airport, first waiting for his cousin (Eisenberg) to arrive for their flight to Poland and then just waiting for something I don’t think he even knows.

Eisenberg and Culkin are cousins who were close in childhood but now lead separate lives. Eisenberg works a boring job in New York, where he lives with his wife and young son. Culkin lives in his parents’ basement in Binghamton, NY, where he does the occasional odd job and gets high a lot. When their grandmother, a concentration camp survivor, dies, she leaves them the money for a Jewish heritage tour of Poland. The trip puts them alternately in connection and in conflict, with the tour guide (Will Sharpe) and the other travelers highlighting the differences between the two.

Culkin has the showier role of the two. His Benji is volatile, kidding one moment and railing against whatever grates on his sensibilities the next. Eisenberg’s David describes him as the kind of person who lights up a room when he walks in and then shits on everything inside it. Culkin plays this to a tee, but for all the character’s verbal diarrhea, his best moments are the silent ones, when you can tell something strange and unknowable is going on inside his head. He has the challenge of playing a character who isn’t even sure himself of what’s going on within. And Eisenberg matches him perfectly. David is more together, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. There’s a pinched quality when he walks, and when he tries explaining his relationship to his cousin to the other tourists, you can see how close he is to losing it. There’s also solid work from the other people in the tour group (the film mostly features a tight-knit ensemble of seven), particularly Jennifer Grey, Sharpe and Kurt Egyiawan, as a Rwandan convert to Judaism.

Eisenberg gives his actors wonderful words to speak. Even the supporting players have lines and moments of deep resonance. And, again, he knows when to shut up. One of the most telling scenes is their tour of the Majdanek concentration camp. When they view the gas chamber, Eisenberg simply keeps the camera on them in medium shot as each walks past the room and looks in. As a writer, he seems to have trained at the feet of Noah Baumbach, who directed him in the wonderfulTHE SQUID AND THE WHALE (2005). He doesn’t try to force a resolution on his characters. The action reveals reams about the two cousins (and their fellow travelers), but there’s no big moment of realization or resolution for them. They’re not going to change their lives. And the big question the action raises — how can we compare our suffering in lives drenched in privilege with the suffering of people reduced to total abjection — is never answered because it can’t be.

I know these days it's easy to reject Wizard School content, but I remember what it was like back then.

And it was really hard, at first.

When She Who Shall Not Be Named first started saying questionable things years ago, fans clung to the idea that she was misguided, or perhaps unaware of harmful biases. In other words, fans were in denial.

Part of this was due to how long "The World's Favorite Children's Author" had been in the public eye without issue. By 2018, Wizard-mania had transformed into a safe and reliable comfort blanket for a generation... so the fans could not reconcile their source of safety with hateful ideology.

So many fans and fan groups flooded her Twitter comments and mentions, desperately trying to make her understand why she was wrong... but we all know what happened next.

The thing is, not everyone was ready to jump off the nostalgia train at this first sign of bullshit behavior. The Fandom broke off piece by piece after each idiotic Tweet when room for denial got smaller and smaller. And the people off the train would revisit the source content and realize, "Hey maybe this was never worth all the hype". So then they'd yell up at people still on the train like, "You're an idiot for supporting this stupid series and its awful creator!" So then people on the train got offended and started defending the series and the creator and next thing you know the train is full of bigots and the community you once loved is gone.

It's scary to jump off the train— you don't know where or how you'll land but you do know it will hurt. (That's okay, by the way. You're allowed to hurt. You didn't do anything wrong here, you're allowed to be sad.) But I'm telling you from experience, you have to make that jump. If you never jump you'll eventually find yourself surrounded by people you hate wondering how you got here. So take that leap!

You won't be jumping alone, either. So many of us will be right there with you, and here's the secret... the creators don't build the Fandom trains. We do. The community doesn't die with the creator, it changes shape and name and function. You might find yourself jumping from one train to another, and that's the wonderfulthing about fandoms. It might not feel fine today, or even tomorrow, but it will one day. And the most important thing is making the choice that you will be most proud of 5, 10 years down the line.

Who knows? Maybe one day we'll be able to safely board this train again.
