Reason Sailor Moon Is Amazing

I used to watch Sailor Moon every day after school as a child. My brother would walk in on the dot every time they transformed. Sure, it’s formulaic and silly, but rewatching it now as an adult, it’s still amazing.

1. Lessons on Feminity

Okay so Sailor Moon/Usagi is flighty, whiney, and a cry baby. She’s also adorable, hilarious and a bad ass. She shows that even in her vulnerability, she’s tough. You can’t deny all the sailor scouts are bad asses in their own right. They each show that feminity doesn’t have to be one size fits all. You can be smart, you can be aggressive, you can be emotional. None of them are wrong. They all are feminine and all are strong.

2. It’s So Wonderfully Queer

These were some of the first queer characters I can remember seeing depicted on TV. It wasn’t a plot device. It wasn’t a trope or a token character. No, it was part of who the character was. I barely blinked at it as a kid and now appreciate it so much more.

3. The Mister Is In Distress

You can fight me, but Tuxedo Mask is pretty useless. He spends more time getting saved than actually doing the saving. Bonus points for showing a dude be an awesome dad.

4. Female Friendships For The Win

Say what you want, that show taught some pretty epic lessons on chicks before dicks.

5. There’s Cats

And they mother fucking talk.
