When you do not know a thing about the issue at stake...
...perhaps it's better to remain silent.
Some of you know, others don't - and that's fine - but my main field of expertise is labor law.
I just read this in anger and disbelief:
Look, lady. I don't care who the hell you are, what you do for a living or why you felt entitled to answer those insistent questions on your side of the fandom. I suppose you are North American and have no idea of how things work on this side of the pond. It is fine: I might know what a Congress filibuster is, for example, but I'd be severely unable to judge the finer points of competence sharing between Fed and state level.
The difference between you and me?
I keep my mouth shut and/or do my own research before opening it in public.
Have you no shame to write things like: 'It was discovered clothing factories in Bulgaria and Portugal made it and how workers were exploited, mostly women, because these factories were in special economic zones in these countries exempt from EU employee rights and regulations.'
HOW DARE YOU? What strange form of illiterate entitlement possessed you to utter such things with confidence, comfortably hidden behind a passive voice ('it was discovered')?
Portugal joined the EU in 1986. Bulgaria (and my country) joined the EU in 2007. I have given 5 relentless years of my life to make this collective political project a reality, along with hundreds of other people my age who chose to come back home from the West and put their skills to good use for their country. In doing so, I rejected more than 10 excellent corporate job offers in France and China. To see you come along and write such enormities is like having you spit in my face.
Article 4 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (aka The Treaty of Rome) is formal and clear, as far as competence sharing between the EU and its Member States goes (the UK was still, back then, a full member of the EU - it quit on February 1st 2020):
That means that ALL the EU regulations are being integrated into the national legislation of the Member States. This is not a copy/paste process, however. And because it is a shared competence area, the Member States have a larger margin of appreciation into making the EU rules a part of their own. While exceptions or delays in this process can be and are negotiated, the core principles are NEVER touched.
Read it one hundred times, madam, maybe you'll learn something today:
THERE ARE NO SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES IN THE EUROPEAN UNION. THE WHOLE FUCKING EUROPEAN UNION IS A SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE, THIS IS WHY IT IS CALLED THE SINGLE MARKET.
What the fuck do you think we are, Guangzhou? We'd wish, seeing the growth statistics!
Now, for the textile industry sector and particularly with regard to the Bulgarian market, a case very similar to my own country. Starting around 1965, many big European textile players realized the competitive advantage of using the lower paid, readily available Eastern European workforce. In order to be able to do business with all those dour Communist regimes, the solution was simple and easy to find: toll manufacturing.
It worked (and still does!) like this:
The foreign partner brings its own designs, textiles and know-how into the mix - or more simply put, it outsources all these activities. The locals transform it into the finished product, using their own workforce. The result is then re-exported to the foreign partner, who labels it and sells it. In doing so, he has the legal obligation to include provenance on the label ('made in Romania', 'made in Indonesia', 'made in Bulgaria' - you name it).
The reason you might find less and less of those 'made in ' labels nowadays at Primark and more and more at Barbour, Moncler and the such is the constant raise of the workers' wages in Eastern Europe since 1990 (things happened there, in 1989, maybe you remember?). We are not competitive anymore for midrange prêt-à-porter - China (Shein, anyone?), Cambodia and Mexico do come to mind as better suppliers. To speak about 'exploited female labourers in rickety old factories' is an insult and a lie. They weren't exploited back in the Eighties, as they are not now (workers in those factories were and still are easily paid about 50% more than all the rest) and the factories being modernized and constantly updated was always a mandatory clause in any contract of the sort. Normal people in our countries rarely or ever saw those clothes. You had to either be lucky enough for a semi-confidential store release or bribe someone working there and willing to take the risk, in order to be able to buy the rejected models on the local market.
If I understood correctly, you place this critical episode at the launch of the limited SRH & Barbour collection, for the fall of 2018. How convenient for you, who (I am told by trusted people) were one of the most vocal critics of S during Hawaii 2.0!
And as far as Barbour goes, it never pretended to manufacture everything in the UK only:
This information is absolutely true. You can read the whole statement, signed in October 2017 by one of their Directors, Ian Sime, here: https://www.barbour.com/us/media/wysiwyg/PDF/Ethical_Statement_October_2017.pdf
And a snapshot for you:
Oh, and: SEDEX is a behemoth in its world, with more than 75.000 companies joining as a member (https://www.sedex.com/become-a-member/meet-our-customers/). Big corporations like TESCO, Dupont, Nestle, Sainsbury's or Unilever included.
I am not Bulgarian, but I know all of this way better than you'll probably ever do. The same type of contracts were common all over Eastern Europe: Romania, Poland, the GDR (that's East Berlin and co, for you) and even the Soviet Union. I am also sure your Portuguese readers will be thrilled to see themselves qualified by a patronizing North American as labor exploiters living in a third-world country with rickety factories.
You people have no shame and never did. But you just proved with trooping colors you also have no culture and no integrity. More reasons to not regret my unapologetic fandom choice.
I expect an angry and very, very vulgar answer to this, even if I chose to not include your name/handle. The stench of your irrelevance crossed an ocean.

Fast fashion is un-feminist and hurts women
word count:927
When one thinks of fast fashion they think about places like Primark and Shein, which predominantly cater to women so you might be thinking hey that's totally feminist they are targeting women! but no that's not a good thing one could even say that makes it worse as the men who are in charge of these big brands are profiting off of mainly women exp the president of Shein is a man, Chris Xu, and the president of Primark is paul marchent.
About Chris Xu and his fast fashion empire-
Chris Xu the founder and CEO of Shein, one of the biggest fast fashion retailers in the world is described as a mysterious billionaire. Xu has a net worth of about $10.5b*
Xu makes most if not all of his money from his fast fashion giant known as SHIEN. Shein is known for having affordable clothing and lacklustre quality. shien like many clothing companies outsources its labour to places like India and Bangladesh they also produce in China. their reason? Lax labour laws allow them to not only pay unlivable wages but have awful working conditions many an article have complained about the child labour that occurs in these factories children under most laws cannot work until teenage hood and then they don’t get paid the same as adults in their same field one could argue that this is an issue in of itself, but imagine you're a child working in a 3rd world country and you're below teenagehood so you not only get paid less than teens you also get paid less than adults in your same field furthermore many clothing factories have machinery that can injure small children using them. but who else works in these sweatshops, women! Women for generations have been making clothing for their families and these factories are an extension of these patriarchal standards. As I previously stated these factories are usually situated in 3rd-word countries or LICs**where patriarchal standards are way more enforced than they are here in the West meaning while here we have equal pay(in theory) in these LICs their women won't be getting equal pay so big brands sourcing there labour from these countries is not only for the general lower pay standards but also the low pay of the women.
In these countries, the majority of the people the brands hire are women because they are able to pay them less for more work.
Labor conditions of the fast fashion giants-
You might think the general mistreatment of women and children is bad but the fact is that not only is the pay bad but the general working conditions are atrocious! factories are known to have bad hygiene and are not up to building standards making them likely to collapse as we saw in the Rana Plaza collapse which was caused by mismanagement and insufficient renovations the collapse caused 1,134 deaths. Breaks are often not mandatory and days off are few and far between meaning that some only get a few days off a year. Recently some tiktok influencers were taken on a PR trip to a ‘Shein factory’ this was later proved to be a false factory put up in order to make them seem like a good company that does violate multiple human rights a day, the influencers went through the ‘factory’ filming what is now a very infamous tiktok where one stated that the workers were ”shocked that people thought they were treated badly” the influencer also showed the viewers the factory and it was pristine with the most recent technology and clean environment the influencer showed the machines not producing any clothing later this was used as proof of the factory being a sham as it would mean that they would be losing money, why would they be losing money? Because if all of Sheinds factories were like this one which shien has said they are that would mean they would all have these state-of-the-art machines which in turn would cost them millions to not only buy but power meaning that for their machines to be financially viable They would have to be constantly producing to create a profit, this further proves that this influencer trip was a purely a sham.
Why is buying from shien and other fast fashion brands so un-feminist and bad for your wallet?
One reason it's unfeminist is that it perpetuates patriarchal standards I've already stated that the women in these factories get hired more which is a good thing but they also get paid less. because capitalism
Why is it bad for your wallet? Because the quality is awful in order to keep costs down not only do they not pay their workers living wages but they also skimp on things like fabric quality they're also hardly ever made well because if a child is making your clothes you cant expect them to be good, but here's the thing it's been reported that if a worker messes up I piece of clothing they have their pay restricted!
A little feminist add on- I believe that if as a culture we decided it was father nature instead of mother nature we wouldn't be treating our planet so badly
In conclusion, shopping fast fashion is contributing to the financial abuse of women and children in LICs

I agree with you in the individual choices not ending the patriarchy but isn’t not wearing makeup, not shaving and just refusing to participate in femininity also an individual choice? Like what would be the difference between a choice and taking real action? I don’t know if my question makes sense. How can we mesure when an action is simply “individual choice” or actively participating in a movement for liberation? I guess this question can be asked for every other movement and some things are obvious too (not watching porn for exemple but I guess it would depend on the reason WHY too). What are your thoughts?
the main difference is collective targeted and planned effort by a community (that's 1000s of people brought together by something in common, may be all mothers, may be all immigrants, may be all living in an industrial area are all industrial workers) at material joints that are the centres of capitalism or centres of maintaining the ruling class and therefore women's oppression. That is not the individual, the individual is acted upon. The individual does not "uphold system" as liberals so often say
There's no ethical consumption under capitalism for most things. Most alternative solution will be capitalized, are simply actually creating new capital markets.
But porn is one major exception because no one actually needs to consume porn. We need clothes, we need eggs. You can try to make sure your clothing is sustainably sourced, you can by from small production co-ops etc. Only a certain group of ppl will be able to afford to do this btw. I do believe that no one needs to wear makeup and no one needs to shave, it's not essential. I mean Zahra Khanom was considered like peak beauty. So this is more driven by conformity and social acceptance. It's possible to change this but probably easier if the change is driven top down, rather than what ppl often recommend here which is bottom up change... or individual effort. Don't get me wrong, individual decisions can bave positive impact. May be a girl aees you with no makeup, unshaved legs and armpits and it impacts her positively. Which is a great endeavour ofc but it's defs a small effect contained withint your ecosystem of interactions, but admirable nonetheless
I like what China did way back in the day where they promoted through propo art, depicting women in men's clothes working industrial labor, intensive jobs. They look sturdy, not effeminate and weak. And I think it created an atmosphere for the average woman to aspire to dress like that, study and be involved like that. This is top down tho. You already have a socialist gov and women in the departments of this socialist gov creating this stuff.
Outside of that, true change will come from seizing ports, supply chains, factories, things that disrupt the entire ruling class ecosystem. You can't go against an entire web or econosystem that maintains women's oppression very intricately: through propoganda, through media, art, ads, influencers, music, academia, plastic surgery industry, porn industry, makeup industey. It's all very organized from the top to feed on your insecurities. You are so entrenched and enmeshed in it from the day you are born. And you are simply a single actor when you decide to do or don't do something. It won't effect much change.
I think the best examples of bringing out mass level change to women's lives is that example of Iceland women's walk out, changes we see in relationship satisfaction experience by women in the GDR after them adopting Stalin's socialist policies, and lastly in China's Long Bow Village where after the communist revolution, there was I believe a local committee that granted land to women. It was theirs to do whatever with. This gave women power. Many divorced their husbands. Many told their mother in laws off. Many remarried someone else. Many husbands were like we will straighten up. Some women took the men back and then divorced them again when the men didn't straighten up. And some genuinely straightened up. But it's absolutely wild to read this social transformation from material provisions to women. It truly changes things drastically within a generation

In the year before the decade change, they set the cats among the pigeons. We were so innocent. We pitied the poor Chinese, welded into their high apartment buildings. We saw video of them calling out their windows for food and help. We saw the Chinese in Italy dying at an unholy rate. A man from China flew to the Northwest, here, and became ill.
They are closing schools now. There are about a tenth of the schools that used to exist. Birth is rare and treacherous. Still men and women do make love and a few children come to birth. Some of them die a few days into life. A healthy child is a rare sight. Their play is carefully watched.
We don't have professional sports now. Too many were dying on the field. It became too horrifying. Most colleges and high schools have given up the tradition of team sports also. Living teen children are too precious. We hope some of them survive their early adulthood. A whole generation is weak and fewer than their parents' generation, or indeed their grandparents' generation. Boomers are stronger than their grandchildren. There are very few great grandchildren.
Goods and services are impossible. Groceries and pharmacies are only open for eight hours on weekdays. Most have self-checkout. No one wants to be at the check stand. Amazon is still standing. Most goods are handled by online shopping. Then we wait for the arrival of a shipment to our houses. Official shopping is done with gov. supplemental funds. It is never enough. Few of us have actual jobs. But they need some of us. We know how things work.
We didn't know it but, WWIII was waged against us. We thought it would take place in the usual way between tanks, guns and jets. There was a lot of Kabuki about Russia, Ukraine and China in the year 2023. But we didn't understand that we were their enemy and that they, the invisible and visible magi were our actual destroyers until it was too obvious to shy away from. The virus, but more, the vaccine, was the means of waging that war. For several years early on people believed and lined up for the shots. Around 2024 even the loudest proponents became silent. That was a relief anyhow.
Still, they needed goods and services, so there are farms, largely poorly run mechanical food factories. There are also special dark farms that run the old way, so that there are good things for them. There are factories for their needs and department stores for them to shop in. We don't have the money, even if they would let us in. You must have a special invisible tattoo on your left cheek for the doors to open to you. There is a reader at the door.
On the street level there are two types of people. We are the survivors walking a tight rope for life. Then there are the bees. Worker bees for the comfort of the powerful and elite. Many of them were what we believed were illegals coming here on their own. But they were brought here to take the place of natives. They mind things for their owners and keep the streets nice to look at. We don't drive cars. They outlawed normal gas runners. There are cars tucked everywhere, unusable. We walk and ride the rare and unreliable buses. They drive fine strange vehicles.
All real houses of sincere worship were closed in 2025, for offensive language and racism. They house third world migrants in them now, also in the hotels and some of the closed high schools and larger buildings of all types. There are home meetings. It's hard to get an invitation to one because of the danger of betrayal.
We make our own music. We use everything up. We make our own food at home. We plant gardens and hope that they escape notice. We keep chickens. We mend clothing. There are tons of used stuff. Everywhere you look there are the material possessions of the dead. We look funny in our secondhand outfits. We try to stay away from medical care. Too many of us go into a hospital, but never come out. We think euthanasia is the main treatment there.
In 2026 President Harris signed a directive making medical care the business of the government. You don't want to end up in a hospital unless there is no other choice. Better to die in peace at home if you must.
There are no more funerals. They outlawed them. Each town has its own crematorium. We are not sure what they do with the ashes. When a family member dies and is processed, the family receives a document officially acknowledging the death.
They tell us we are happy. But we are very weary. Everything changed after the great Reorg. We try to tell the children how life was. You can't blame them for thinking it has always been like this. There is not much in the way of history taught, just stories about how much better it is now. We try to keep our children out of the govco schools. For one thing, schools are literally not safe for a child. We teach them the basics at home.
We have a black underground economy. We have our own currency. They destroy anything they find having to do with our means of buying and selling. But we just start up a printing shop somewhere else and issue new bills, dated when they were made. Old ones lose value quickly. There is a lot of barter where it makes sense. We know we will probably not be able to keep this up forever.
Forever. We know who we are waiting for, and we see the signs. Against all odds, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is in the the hands of the Israelis. They made a new temple and started the sacrifices again. There is no peace there. A strange malignant figure is being spoken of.
Even so, come Lord Jesus. December of the year 2030.
Much more to come

Who’s In?
Fast fashion has become one of the most criticized marketing trends of the century. It targets women (especially Gen-Z), who buy far more clothes and shoes than men do, and preys upon consumer desire to be fashionable and trendy. If you can speed up the process, as in have a continuous drip irrigation system of new styles, colors, etc., you can get people to buy more.
Oh, and it helps to sell at jaw-dropping prices, quality be damned. These items aren’t meant to make it to next year anyway. Who says that clothing has to be sustainable? Make more, sell more, and keep the cycle going.
As for the gender targeting, we need look no farther than Shein (pronounced “She In”), the Chinese clothing giant that has taken the world by storm. Available only online, they sell from their own website, as well as a store on Amazon. To be fair, Shein does sell a few men’s items, but you can tell by the name who their target audience is.
And Shein just found itself in the middle of a firestorm, thanks to a promotional stunt they just pulled.
No stranger to social media and the power that some users have there, Shein invited a group of American influencers for a free junket to China to view its model factory. As you might expect, all the happy, smiling workers and absolutely perfect working conditions wowed the influencers, who then gushed about it on their socials.
The only problem is that it backfired on the influencers, who then had to endure an onslaught of hate. Shein, you see, is alleged to rely on a slew of unethical business practices, from forced labor to unsafe working conditions. The model factory, critics argue, was a prop, and the influencers were unwitting dupes.
At least they got to go to China.
If this were during the 1950s, it would be like the USSR inviting Americans over to check out their premier forced labor camp, where all the inmates would be grinning from ear to ear and extolling the virtues of their employer. Except those labor camps were true, and thus far, all the flack about Shein is just rumors and speculation.
You know, just like the rumors about TikTok as well as Chinese retail newcomer Temu. If you can’t prove something, just start some nasty rumors.
We are left with an odd situation. The influencers may very well have been duped. I’ve been to China a few times, and I know all about the window dressing. Western hotels have air conditioning and heat, and commonly accept credit cards. But if you get a little bit out of the business districts of Beijing, Shanghai, etc., it is very different. I remember all too well touring an orphanage in 2002, and you could hang beef there. It was February, and the nannies and infants were bundled up like Eskimos (and I use that word in a non-racist kind of way). Our hotel down the street, though, was like being in any other major US city.
And then there are the critics, who are inciting the wrath of the entire social landscape. They may also be a tad bit jealous that they weren’t chosen to go on this trip. Either way, alleging unethical practices of any Chinese company is about as convenient as buying a new dress online for this weekend’s holiday party.
Well, as long as they can get it delivered in time. Otherwise, you may just have to wear last year’s garment, if you still have it. Oh, the tragedy. But that’s a consumer behavior issue, yet another wrinkle in this mess. There are plenty of things I understand, but that’s not one of them.
I’ll just stick to the business of it all.

Hazardous Chemicals in SHEIN Products Break EU Regulations.
Greenpeace has conducted research on the Chinese fashion company SHEIN that identifies high levels of hazardous chemicals which break European Union regulations by up to 100% or more. Some 47 products were randomly tested and 7 (15%) were found to have contained hazardous chemicals that break EU regulatory limits. 5 were found to break the EU limits by 100% or more. The products are purchased online from Germany, Austria, Spain Italy, and Switzerland. They were also purchased from a pop-up store in Munich, Germany. All the products tested included children's clothes and shoes. All the garments were sent to an independent laboratory BUI for chemical analysis. SHEIN is at the forefront of ultra-fast fashion which has environmentalists up in arms. There are many reasons too, including the short life span of their products, ultra-low pay to Chinese workers, and now clear breaches of EU health regulations. Established fashion designers like Prado have also been vocal about intellectual property theft. BUIs findings included very high levels of phthalates in shoes and formaldehyde in a baby girl’s dress indicate at the very least SHEIN is not regulating its product production.

SHEIN targets TikTok users.
Rebecca Morter, founder of the sustainable e-commerce site Lone Design Club recently said in an interview with Glossy, “The worry with what Shein is doing — especially with their target audience of Gen-Zers* — is that it is making them think that it’s OK to pay next to nothing for an item of clothing, when the only way to have reached that price would mean exploiting people along the supply chain, from the makers to the designers,” * Gen-Z (people born between the mid-to-late 1990s and 2012).

The Supply Chain.
SHEIN's business model relies on products being produced and delivered almost instantly. The fast fashion style forces suppliers to deliver at breakneck speed which in turn makes things very hard for regulators. Earlier this month SHEIN announced the opening of a 170,000 sq ft. Warehouse and Office in Greater Toronto Area. The company is set to keep expanding and if regulators don't start looking into this soon there could be really bad ramifications.
Dye Factory in Shaoxing, China. Photo by Lu Guang. Greenpeace.
Greenpeace's point of view.
Viola Wohlgemuth, Greenpeace Overconsumption & toxics Campaigner in Germany said, “Greenpeace is calling for the EU to enforce its laws on hazardous chemicals – which are a basic requirement for achieving a circular textiles economy and the end of fast fashion, as set out in the EU’s own Textiles Strategy.” “But the EU’s proposals also need to take on the inhuman system of exploitation and destruction by ultra fast fashion that should have no place in any industry in the 21st century, by holding companies fully responsible for environmental and social exploitation in their supply chains and the impacts from fashion waste. This also needs to be urgently addressed through a global treaty, similar to the recently agreed UNEA plastics treaty that is currently being discussed, to finally tackle the giant fashion footprint.”
In conclusion.
SHEIN's business model needs investigating by the authorities soon rather than later. If their business model is putting people at risk of exposure to dangerous levels of toxins then the public has a right to know. Parents should do some research and make sure their kids are not put at risk because of new fashion trends. Sources: THX News, LinkedIn, SHEIN, Glossy, Euro News & Greenpeace. Read the full article

After being deceived, Khalid conducted a site visit to personally verify the reliability of the freight forwarder China to Saudi Arabia before deciding to collaborate.
Khalid straightly told me that the international logistics company that served him before didn't clearly list the customs clearance and transportation fees for his destination, causing him to be forced to pay an extra fee after the goods arrived. This made him very dissatisfied. In other words, after the freight forwarder initially quoted a price, it seemed low and attractive, but in reality, when later fees were added, the total price was quite high.
I understood Khalid's hesitation. Indeed, some international logistics companies, in order to get orders and only do short-term business, deliberately conceal some easily overlooked fees, such as destination customs clearance fees and inland transportation fees. They attract customers with low prices, and Khalid was a victim of this. I told him that we would not only be completely transparent when quoting prices and list all fees, but also assist him in handling all procedures at the destination to avoid any hidden fees. I detailed all possible fee items, including packing in China, port fees, and customs clearance and delivery fees in Saudi Arabia. Khalid saw our transparency and meticulousness in fees, and also felt our sincerity as a professional freight forwarder China to Saudi Arabia.
While visiting a factory in China for inspection, Khalid also came to our company for an inspection, aiming to confirm if our company was a reliable freight forwarder China to Saudi Arabia. I led them on a tour of our company and warehouse, and introduced our logistics services and operational processes in detail. Our company has purchased an entire 1800-square-meter office floor on the 8th floor, with nearly 100 employees. It's clearly a very formal international logistics company. Khalid didn't expect us to be such a large-scale international logistics company. I told Khalid that we have been long-term partners with globally renowned companies such as Huawei, SF Express, and Costco. Our professional services and rich experience have kept our customers in long-term cooperation with us. You know, big companies are very strict when choosing logistics companies. They examine the logistics company's strength, scale, service capabilities, etc., and also investigate the company's background, whether it has a history of major lawsuits, etc. They also conduct on-site inspections of the company, sign cooperation agreements, and so on.
Khalid expressed his willingness to cooperate with us. He is in the clothing business, and this time, they need to ship a batch of Arabic men's robes, Arabic women's clothing, silk fabrics, and high-end blended fabric clothing purchased from various parts of China to Jubail Port in Saudi Arabia. They hope we can help consolidate all the goods and ship them from Shenzhen to Saudi Arabia.
I told Khalid that we have an advantage in consolidating goods. We have our own exclusive foreign trade warehouse at the Yantian Port terminal in Shenzhen. With standardized management of goods, we have full control over the entire logistics process and are one of only three among 60,000 peers in Shenzhen. Many of our major clients choose to collaborate with us due to our warehouse, which can temporarily store goods and better coordinate the processes of inbound, storage, sorting, and outbound of cargo, thereby reducing delays and errors in intermediate links and improving overall logistics efficiency. Furthermore, the more shipments we handle, the lower the costs become.
After signing the order, I took immediate action. But after the goods arrived at the warehouse, during the verification process, I found that the packaging boxes from one of their silk factories were too thin. After being transported by trailers and handled back and forth, some were already close to breaking. I reported this to Khalid and communicated with him about solutions. I said we could help repack with thicker packaging boxes, and Khalid was very happy to hear that. I arranged for the silk to be repacked using thicker packaging boxes to ensure no damage during long-distance transportation. At the same time, I also arranged for loading services and was responsible for contacting the local customs clearance agent in Saudi Arabia to ensure the goods could pass through customs smoothly.
If you want to know more about me, read my diary, which records more bits and pieces about freight forwarder China to Saudi Arabia, as well as the warm and touching stories between us and our clients. If you have any needs, feel free to contact me.
