Sexual Politics is out of print. The Dialectic of Sex is out of print. What women have to do is come to terms with the fact that we live in a society that simply censors better than state censorship. People have got to come to terms with the power of the publishing industry and the media in controlling thought and expression. They have to understand that it is an issue of power and money and people have to be less passive in relation to books. People have to take their money which they don't have much of and they have to buy books by feminist writers. They have to develop a much more sophisticated understanding of how the book industry works. A hard-cover book like Letters from a War Zone was virtually published dead. If it's still in bookstores in two months it will be a miracle. They have to understand that everything that they hear all the time about how everything can be published in this country is a lie and that part of the social function of the publishing industry is to buy up the rights to and then obliterate certain books so that nobody can get them. They have to stop thinking that they live in the liberal dreamworld of equality where fairness has already been achieved. It hasn't been achieved. You can be equal in your heart but it doesn't make you equal in the world. I think that the refusal to understand what happens to books by women goes along with this liberal refusal to acknowledge that power is a reality and we're not the ones who have it. What I'm saying is that women have got to start facing reality. You cannot build any kind of movement for change on wishful thinking. The wishful thinking is that we already have what it is we want and what it is we need. We don't have it. Women who want to write and communicate, which in a big country is hard to do—it's getting harder for them, not easier. There isn't more access, there is less access. People have got to take the economics of the publishing industry seriously and understand that very few writers will survive who do not write according to the demands of the marketplace, by which I mean essentially the demands of turning out books that you can consume as passively as a television show. That's sort of the standard.

Typography Tuesday
MORRIS
This typeface, by Norwegian designer Therese Ølberg, was inspired William Morris's organic forms, particularly his wallpaper designs. The font is based on Bodoni Old Style. All the letters are designed in Illustrator, then cut out in wood using a laser cutter, and finally the wooden letters are placed on a letterpress and printed.
These images are from The Making of Artistic Typefaces by 50 international designers published in 2016 by SendPoints Publishing in Hong Kong.

For much of my life, so much media was made by men. Men with working class and military backgrounds. Chain smoking war veterans and high school diploma engineers and sleaze writers. Journalists who were 20th century journalists and not 21st century journalists. Men who were actually pretty familiar and relatable because they're like guys in my family.
This made me think, you know what would be great, if women made some of this stuff too. One day, feminism will win. We will get to be in the public sphere just like these same men. And now women do all of these things! Women with MFAs.
#the men went away but it doesn't mean that regular women now got to write!!#this issue is VERY VERY discoursed in 20th century feminism!! and by women writers!!#female creation in the 20th is fraught!! but it didn't get that much better for the women who didn't get to create *then*!#if it's gotten better it's hugely downstream of self publishing but we don't get to be part of the cultural taste making or narrative the#way that the 20th century men got to be#I think prole women in creative stuff end up making sleaze tbh and get shut out of the taste making#except in periods where sleaze is influential

NGL I have STRONG opinions about digital releases omitting the letters to the editor section of older comics. I feel like the letters are a part of comic history and should be aggressively preserved.
#look i was a weirdo and loved the letters so much#so much#so fucking damn much#i still to this day mourn that we don't have them#sometimes the editors would publish blatant aggressive criticism and promise to do better on some things#it was rare but it did happen in a handful of things involving stereotypes#also there is queer history in them such as in superboy and the ravers where people wrote in about hero#asking WHY he was not interested in women and this editor had to so professionally explain that he was GAY and where they stood on it#you also got to read queer readers writing in about these queer characters and the JOY in their words is priceless#also sorry but geoff's letters are fun and stupid at the same time and are a huge insight to what his hcs were#he LOVED tiny krypto so much it likely inspired him making dex starr bc he loved the idea of a small overly powered animal#not saying that was the main reason why ofc but it is interesting that he created dex after praising that mean little mutt#i say with the most love#my venting#my rambles

here are all the recs I posted for femslash february 2024...! each individual rec post can be found in my femslash feb recs tag. I actually thought I wasn't going to be able to do this because work got super chaotic, but in the end I couldn't bear to skip out on a leap year. that's a whole extra day for yuri.
last year I focused on official releases, so this year I wanted to focus on series that aren't technically officially available (plus a french-japanese film). fan translations are always a dicey for artists/translators/publishers/etc because obviously they need to get paid... but yuri's already such an overlooked genre that—in an official capacity—we end up with a couple drops from what's already a pretty small pool. I read hana to hoshi about a decade ago, and I keep submitting it to the seven seas survey for licensure! and yet!! no dice. and even when there are official releases, sometimes they just... disappear!? wish you were gone was licensed and then taken down, so for a while the only way to read it (if you missed out on buying it) was the fan translation. I think it's important to support artists and official releases, and also, to appreciate the thankless endeavor(/crime) of scanlation.
hope yall find something you like!
#femslash february#femslash feb recs#ff recs#recs#rambled a lot for this one lol#but like. yeah. honey & honey is imo a pretty culturally significant work#but I can't see any publishers picking it up for licensure#maybe for a recent autobio manga but certainly not one from 20 years ago#and from a marketing standpoint. it's 'hard' to push yuri as a genre.#bl has an obvious and profitable demographic (women)#m/f has an obvious and profitable demographic (women)#but--if you make a distinction between yuri and H (I do)--yuri doesn't really have an obvious and profitable demographic#so it's a lot harder to pitch yuri... which means it's a lot harder to even introduce yuri to a broader audience...#and thus the cycle continues...#plus there's the whole systemic misogyny embeded into a patriarchal society which devalues stories centered around women etc#anyway the POINT is. commit to yuri duty. be a yuri warrior. write femslash. hype femslash.

went to life drawing yesterday and today was reminded (by someone being a bit of a wuss about the concept of life drawing) of meg cabot young adult novel ready or not (2005) where the teen protag goes to a life drawing class with her boyfriend and freaks out about A Nude Man!! and then gets over it
in looking up this novel i (re?)discovered that it's mainly about the protagonist deciding whether to sleep with said boyfriend, who is the president's son, and also disagreeing with the president's anti birth control policies on live television. meg cabot staying terrifyingly cutting edge unforch
the other main thing i remember about this book was the challenge in an art class to draw an egg without using white. i think about that once every three months maybe.
also: would love to have a life drawing class where i could be scandalized by a nude man because this new one miiiight have a thin pretty woman model policy. Again
#last one it was much easier to check and confirm the thin pretty women for nude models 95% of the time situation#this one had at least a better vibe (including snacks provided)#would this book get meg cabot cancelled on X were it published today? Discuss

I made a children's book!
Happy to announce that I've published my third book (and second children's book)! 'I Can Do Anything!' is a brief 20+ page story that follows Jaden as he wonders what he wants to be when he grows up. The book ends with a few coloring pages as well!
I had fun writing this brief, silly little book. It's available on Amazon right now!

#transformers#maccadam#drama#i like the cover#people saying it's too 'sexy' are the problematic sexists#this same shit happened with z0ner's cover. yes i bullied her too because i believed the stupid shit you guys were saying#I MANAGED TO GROW UP BUT YOU PEOPLE ARE STILL DOING THIS TOXIC SEXIST ASS DANCE#i thought i was the bad person but honestly it's yall and your bullying asses#you're disgusting for bullying artists just because they draw women how they want#GROW UP.#I LOVE DRAWING CURVY SLIM SEXY ROBOT GIRLS#THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT#WE SHOULD FILL THE WORLD WITH MORE OF THEM BECAUSE IT'S WHAT I WANT TO SEE#IF YOU WANT TO SEE SOMETHING ELSE... DO IT YOURSELF!!!! MAYBE ONE DAY THE COMPANY WILL LIKE YOUR ART ENOUGH TO HAVE IT ON A COVER#i like milne's stocky arcee just as much as average arcee from TFA just as much as svelte arcee in this cover#i really thought it was me that was why i left the fandom due to my ignorance but coming back and seeing this petty ass drama you guys#are unleashing... im realising that you guys are the problematic ones. omfg#you make it so unfun to be in this fandom. might as well publish the most recent animation i was working on then take the ones i've already#finished into hiding. you people suck the joy out of drawing for transformers.#transformers was my last bastion out of depression and you guys reminded me why people shouldn't get into transformers#getting back into tf revitalized my desire to draw and held me back from suicide. but knowing how toxic environment you guys are...#there's no reason to keep living with such inhospitable negative toxic bullies.

The minor spn characters rarely interact with each other, especially the women. It goes without saying how rare it is for spn women to have meaningful relationships (in the broad sense of the word) with other women. So.
#and everyone wept#you can see how by the option for patience and jody i started to get desperate#and played loose with the words 'meaningful relationships'#women from last options interacted like once or twice on the screen but at least they're implied to have meaningful relationships#polls#spn#supernatural#charlie bradbury#dorothy baum#patience turner#jody mills#donna hanscum#kaia nieves#alex jones#claire novak#alicia banes#tasha banes#jo harvelle#ellen harvelle#this was an exercise in how many relationships between spn women i can remember#not many#why tf tumblr published the old version of the post with mistakes#why does tumblr hate me
