Elevate Your Style: Discover the Best of Women’s Clothing Online
When it comes to curating a wardrobe that reflects your unique style, a ladies' clothing brand that offers both trend-forward and timeless pieces is essential. Whether you're looking for everyday essentials or standout statement pieces for special occasions, a versatile collection of women's clothing can take you from morning meetings to evening outings effortlessly.
In this article, we’ll explore how a curated ladies’ clothing brand can elevate your style, the importance of versatile wardrobe staples, and why shopping online for women’s fashion is the modern way to build your perfect wardrobe.
Why Choose a Ladies’ Clothing Brand for Your Wardrobe?
Shopping from a women’s clothing brand provides a tailored shopping experience that’s designed to meet the needs of modern women. Unlike larger department stores that carry multiple brands, a dedicated clothing brand can offer a more cohesive collection that fits specific aesthetics, sizes, and quality standards. Whether you’re looking for something casual, chic, or formal, a ladies' clothing brand can provide collections that offer both style and comfort.
Versatile Wardrobe Staples for Every Season
1. Classic Dresses Every woman needs a few classic dresses in her wardrobe. A well-fitting dress can be a versatile piece that transitions from day to night, from office to weekend, with the right accessories. Think of a little black dress (LBD) that you can dress up with statement jewelry for a night out or pair with a cardigan for a more casual office look. A feminine floral dress works wonders in spring and summer, while a fitted shift dress can be perfect for fall and winter layering.
2. Cozy Sweaters and Knitwear When the temperatures drop, cozy sweaters and knitwear are a must-have. A chunky knit sweater, a cashmere cardigan, or a fitted turtleneck can add both warmth and style to your look. These pieces can be paired with everything from skirts and jeans to layered over dresses. A high-quality knit that retains its shape and softness through many washes is a smart investment that will keep you feeling cozy and chic.
3. Tailored Pants and Jeans Tailored pants are an essential part of every woman’s wardrobe, offering a polished look for the office, meetings, or events. A great pair of well-fitted pants can also serve as the base for a variety of outfits. From classic black trousers to wide-leg or high-waisted styles, tailored pants can be paired with everything from simple tees to elegant blouses.
Equally important, a reliable pair of jeans is a must. Denim never goes out of style, and a great pair of jeans can work with virtually any look. Opt for versatile cuts such as skinny, bootcut, or boyfriend jeans that can easily transition through different seasons.
4. Outerwear for Every Season From trench coats to chic blazers, outerwear is the perfect way to elevate any outfit. A classic trench coat will keep you warm on rainy days and look polished when paired with dresses or jeans. A statement blazer adds structure and sophistication, while lightweight jackets or cardigans can provide warmth in transitional weather without sacrificing style.
5. Stylish Tops and Blouses Versatile tops and blouses can take you through all seasons. Look for tops in fabrics like silk, cotton, or linen, which can be styled to suit both formal and casual occasions. A white button-down shirt is a timeless piece that pairs well with both trousers and skirts, while a flowy blouse or a fitted crop top offers a modern take on your wardrobe.
6. Accessories and Statement Pieces Don’t forget to accessorize! Scarves, hats, belts, and handbags can transform an outfit from simple to stylish. Opt for pieces that can add a pop of color or texture to any look. Whether you love bold, statement-making accessories or prefer minimalistic designs, the right accessories will add personality to your wardrobe.
Why Shop for Women’s Clothing Online?
Shopping for women’s clothing online offers numerous advantages. Here’s why it’s become the preferred method for fashion lovers worldwide:
1. Convenience Online shopping provides the ultimate convenience. You can browse through a wide selection of clothing from the comfort of your home, and many online stores offer quick and reliable shipping options. Whether you're shopping at night or during your lunch break, it's easy to find time to browse for the perfect addition to your wardrobe.
2. Wider Selection When you shop online for women’s clothing, you're not limited to what's in stock at your local store. Online boutiques and retail websites often carry an extensive range of products, from trendy new arrivals to bestsellers and classic staples. Plus, many brands offer exclusive online collections that are unavailable in physical stores.
3. Easy Size & Style Guidance Many women’s clothing brands provide size guides, styling tips, and virtual fitting tools that make it easier to choose the right fit. Some online stores also feature user reviews and photos from other customers, giving you a better sense of how an item might look on different body types.
4. Sales and Discounts Online shopping often gives you access to seasonal sales, clearance items, and special discounts. Shopping directly from the brand's website may also offer loyalty programs or first-time buyer discounts. Signing up for newsletters ensures that you’ll never miss out on special promotions.
How to Shop Smart for Women’s Clothing Online
1. Know Your Measurements When shopping online, it's crucial to know your measurements. Many clothing brands provide detailed sizing charts to help you select the right fit. Check the size guide, and consider measuring yourself with a soft measuring tape to avoid the frustration of buying items that don't fit.
2. Check the Return Policy Before making a purchase, review the store's return policy. Many online fashion retailers offer hassle-free returns, but it’s always a good idea to confirm before buying. This will ensure that if the item doesn’t fit or isn’t what you expected, you can easily return or exchange it.
3. Read Product Descriptions While photos are important, don’t overlook the product descriptions. A good description will provide details on fabric type, fit, and care instructions, which can help you determine if an item is right for your needs.
4. Mix Trends with Timeless Pieces When shopping for a wardrobe update, balance trendy pieces with timeless classics. For example, invest in a high-quality blazer or a versatile pair of jeans, and pair them with seasonal trends like bold prints or colorful accessories. This approach allows you to refresh your wardrobe without starting from scratch.
Conclusion
Building a wardrobe that speaks to your personal style is easy with the right selection of ladies' clothing. A high-quality clothing brand offers everything you need, from stylish basics to bold statement pieces that elevate your look. By shopping online, you gain access to a wider range of options, better pricing, and the convenience of shopping from home. Whether you're looking to refresh your everyday style or invest in a few timeless pieces, an online clothing brand has the fashion-forward pieces you need to stay chic and confident year-round.
FAQS
1. How do I know my size when shopping online for women’s clothing? Most online stores provide detailed sizing charts that include measurements for bust, waist, hips, and inseam. Measure yourself using a soft measuring tape and compare your measurements to the brand’s chart. If you're unsure, many brands also provide customer service or style guides to help you pick the best fit.
2. Can I return items if they don’t fit? Yes, many online women’s clothing stores offer easy return and exchange policies. Make sure to check the store’s return policy before making a purchase to ensure you can return or exchange items that don’t fit. Some stores offer free returns or extended return windows.
3. How do I keep my clothing looking new after purchase? To maintain your clothing, always follow the care instructions on the label. For delicate fabrics like silk or wool, consider dry cleaning or hand washing. For everyday wear, gentle machine washes and air drying can help preserve the fabric and fit. Investing in high-quality pieces and taking care of them will ensure they last for years.

Robbie Christmas Prompt
Prompts: 13  “Your hands are freezing!” ,
41, “If you don’t go to sleep right now, Santa’s not coming.”
55, “You want to go to the mall now? ARE YOU CRAZY?”
               68 winter proposal
and 75.  “Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays, love.”
Requested: Yes! And thank you for letting me know which prompt list you were talking about! Made this whole thing a lot easier lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Your hands are freezing!” I moaned as my four year old nephew placed my hands around my neck, giggling at the look on my face. “What happened to your mittens?” I demanded, pulling his hands away from my neck in order to inspect the pockets of his thick winter coat.
“Gone!” He cried, giggling as he leaned forward so his nose, which too was freezing, was pressed against my cheek. I groaned, shaking my head as he began to happily chant about having no mittens.
“Get inside you crazy kid.” I sighed, standing up and directing him off towards the living room. Moments later the sounds of “Blue Clues” reached me, followed quickly by his screaming out answers to every silly question that Steve asked. Knowing that I would not be needed anytime soon, I began to search the basket of mittens. I knew my nephew and knew that the moment Robbie arrived home, he was off visiting his sister and his own nephew, that he would drag Robbie outside to play in the snow and would need mittens. When I failed to any mittens there, I quickly searched the “Lion King” bag my brother had sent with Noah cursing when I failed to find any. Another quick search of the rest of my brothers overnight bags turned up no signs of mittens for Noah, which caused me to let out a loud groan.
“Great.” I huffed, running a hand over my face as I turned towards the living room. “Now I have to go to the damn mall on Christmas Eve.” I could, of course, call my brother and tell him that Noah needed mits but Carter was nervous enough as it was. Since April had left he was afraid of leaving Noah alone, for fear that the little boy would think he was being abandoned by both of his parents and calling him now would only panic him for no reason.
“Auntie can I have a cookie?” Noah screamed, his voice barely audible over the sounds of Blue Clues.
“Of course.” I answered, smiling as I headed off towards the kitchen. “I am made sugar cookies did you want to decorate them now or wait until Robbie gets here?”
“Now!” He screamed, turning the TV off as suddenly as he had turned it on and raced out of the living room, nearly crashing into my legs in process. “Do you have sprinkles?” He inquired, only “sprinkles” sound much more like “sprwinles” since he was still have difficulty with his “r”s
“Well of course I do, you can make sugar cookies without sprinkles!” I giggled, ruffling his hair as I followed him into the kitchen, his little feet padding against the ilumnu flooring.
We had just finished decorating the last cookie, or I should I just finished as he stopped half way through and decided eating the icing and cookies was the best option, when Robbie arrived.
“Love?” He screamed out, laughing as Noah let out a cry of pure joy and began racing off towards him, myself hot on his heels. I had turned the corner just in time to see Noah throw himself at Robbie, who was ready for the four year old and was kneeling down with his arms wide open.
“We just finished cookies!” I laughed, my smile growing as I watched the two of them.I loved watching them together and couldn’t help but picture what he would look like with our own child.
“Perfect! I could use a cookie!” Robbie laughed, untangling himself from Noah and heading towards me. He paused, pressing a quick kiss to my lips before allowing Noah to drag him off to the kitchen.
“When your finished your cookie could you maybe go to the mall with me? Little man needs mittens.” I asked, watching as he accepted a cookie, that was more icing and sprinkles than cookie since Noah made it, only to have him pause halfway to his mouth.
“You want to go to the mall now? ARE YOU CRAZY!” He demanded, staring at me as if I already was crazy and I may be just that. Going to the mall, which was the only large shopping center in our small town, on Christmas Eve was certainly a crazy idea. However it was the only one I had at the moment, despite forcing an overly excited three year old to stay inside while there was snow outside.
“He needs mittens.” I repeated, watching as Noah began to grow impatient with us both.
“Who said he can’t just wear a pair that is too big. It’s just for now right?” Robbie laughed, biting into the cookie Noah had prepared and instantly declaring it the best cookie he had ever tasted. “We will just tuck the sleeves of his coat into the mits with him and call it done. No need to go to the mall love, unless you really want to.”
“Do I want to go to the mall?” I inquired with a laugh. “Hell no, we will do it your way then. Besides it’s late out already we won’t be out there too long so it should be fine.” Knowing that I no longer had to face the overly crowded mall, I allowed myself to relax.
“Robbie outside!” Noah screamed, laughing happily when Robbie nodded.
“Let’s go get ready then lil man.” With that Noah was gone, nothing more than a brown haired little streak in a Batman onesie. “Are you going to come outside with us?”
“No you two men are going to need hot chocolate for when your done.”
“Are you going to make your famous homemade hot chocolate?” When I nodded, giggling at how excited he was.
“Yes and I will also get dinner started while I am at it. How does something simple sound, I’m thinking finger foods.”
“Sounds perfect to me my love.” He cooed, bending down to press a kiss against to my lips. “Whatever you make is good to me.”
Robbie and Noah had been playing out in the snow for over an hour, their laughter reaching me through the windows, when my brother arrived home, grunting as Noah no doubt threw himself at his father. Minutes later the three men in my life had made their way inside, all of them covered in snow and cold to the bone.
“Take your things off, dinner is ready. We having chinese.” I announced, laughing at the three overly excited cries of approval from the three men in my life. I barely had time to place the full plates out on the table when they were rushing towards it, sitting down and digging in. “Hot chocolate anyone?” It was a rhetorical question but I was answered with grunts nonetheless. I shook my head as I began to pour out the hot chocolate, pausing to kiss each man on my way by before finally settling down at the table beside Robbie and helping myself.
“When Santa coming?” Noah demanded between bites of food. Though it came out more as “When Santa woming.” While he could say all three words perfectly, it was growing late and he was getting sleepy, which meant that he was slurring his words. It wouldn’t be much longer until he passed out.
“Late tonight when you are asleep. Just like every Christmas.” Carson answered, smiling down at his son. “So that means after dinner and Rudolph it’s time for bed.” Watching Rudolph after dinner Christmas eve was a tradition my mother had started and Noah adored it.
“No bed.” Noah cried, the word bed waking him up enough to glare at his father.
“Whatever you say little man.” Carson laughed, ruffling Noah’s hair before he turned back to his meal. As dinner went on however, it became clear that Noah was not able to stay awake much longer, especially when he began to doze over his mug of hot chocolate. However when Carson picked him up for bed, he began to protest, sleepy little cries of no bed, ringing throughout the house.
“If you don’t go to be right now, Santa’s not coming!” Carson warned, Robbie and I stifling our laughter when Noah instantly fell silent.
“Why don’t you come for a walk with me.” Robbie suggested, chuckling softly at my raised brow. “Come on it won’t be to bad now, plus it will be beautiful.”
“I never said no, I just don’t understand why you suddenly want to go for a walk.”
“Sudden whims.” He chuckled, smiling as I pushed myself away from the table and headed out to the front hall.
“Your lucky I have mittens.” I chuckled, smiling at him as I began to get into hat and mitts. He followed my lead and in less than a minute we were out in the cold, the bitter December wind biting at our faces. “So where to?”
“Just around is all.” He replied with a shrug, reaching out to wrap my arm around his own. I hummed, taking a step closer to him, leaning my head on his shoulder. We walked in silence, each of us taking turns to pick a direction. We came to a stop when we reached the river. It was covered in ice and had the moonlight was reflecting of the lake. It was here that I met Robbie for the first time. I taken Noah down to swim in the lake two summers before and ran into him. We started talking and that was the end of it.
“Did you know when I first met you I didn’t think love was real. I honestly thought it was just a fairytale. All I had knew of love was that people got hurt. They took advantage of you and left you to mend your trust issues and heart. Then you came along and suddenly I could see why people put so much into it. I knew the moment that I saw you running around trying to collect frogs, while clearly terrified, that you were the type of person that would do anything for the people you love. I also knew then, when you turned to smile widely at me, that you were it. I didn’t even try to fight it you know. As stupid as it sounds you make that cheesy line from twilight real. You know the when where Edward is like, when you came into my life you were like the sun or whatever. You were my sun and it wasn’t until I saw your smile that I noticed I was living in the dark and that I never wanted to return to that. I need you in my life, you make me a better man. So will you please do me the honour of becoming my wife.” As he spoke he fell to one knee, pulling a simple ring from his pocket. Despite being a simple golden band with single diamond in the center, it was the most beautiful ring I had ever seen.
“Oh Robbie, please get up it’s freezing and yes I will marry you.” I cried, laughing as he instantly jumped to his feet. Before pulling me into a kiss, he slipped the ring on my finger, both of us grinning when it was the perfect fit. As his lips touched mine, it felt like everything was falling to place.
“Merry Christmas love.” He whispered as he pulled away, grinning widely at me.
“Merry Christmas darling.” I answered, smiling again as I leaned in for another kiss.

Our Escape
Can you hear me falling into a black hole? My screams fading in the void As I try to break the wind I shall be reborn
(( Suggested listening: https://youtu.be/tf1xUGRGLtM ))
Sometime last year…
“Mari, it’s time to wake up,” Kallard whispered while gently shaking his sister.
Night had fallen over the forward operating base, the chill of winter piercing the thick jackets worn by the troops stations there. A high concrete wall had been erected around the base sometime after it was established somewhere in Garlemald’s boarders. Kallard and his sister Marilini had been stationed here following one of their black ops missions and were currently awaiting new orders. The rest of the platoon was sound asleep in their bunks, the twins having their own room due as a result of both their rank and their service to the Empire.
“Mmm,” Marilini groaned as she rolled over in bed, pulling the comforter over her head.
“C’mon Mari, we really gotta get going,” Kallard said, trying to keep the panic welling up in his chest out of his voice. “We’ve only got once chance to do this and it has to be now. We have to go, Mari.”
Kallard looked up from his sister, glancing behind him at the only door leading in and out of the small room. He started roughly shaking Marilini knowing that their window to escape was growing smaller and smaller with each passing second. The explosives were in place, their timers ticking away and would detonate in under ten minutes. Kallard had packed up their gear and essentials, choosing to leave behind their uniforms and anything else that could give away their status as Garleans.
Marilini let out a yawn as she sat up in bed, tossing aside the blanket. She shivered at the sudden absence of warmth and rolled out of bed. Kallard spun around when she started to strip out of her pajamas and into the clothing he had laid out for her while she slept. He glanced down at his watch and then back up at the door as anxiety started welling up inside his chest.
“Hurry up Mari, we don’t have much longer,” Kallard said without looking behind him.
Another yawn escaped Mari as she tugged on a pair of slacks and snow boots and finished off the outfit with a black long coat specifically designed for cold weather. Upon hearing the slap of boots against the cold cement floor Kallard looked back at his sister as she tugged on a hiking backpack. He offered her a tired smile before looking back at the door then down at his watch. Once Mari was finished getting ready she reached out and tapped her brother’s shoulder.
“Okay, let’s go. We don’t have much time before the bombs go off. Get your rifle, we’re gonna need it,” Kallard told his sister as he took hold of his rifle with his right hand, holding the weapon at the ready should the need arise. He glanced back once more to make sure Mari was doing as instructed before he stepped over to the door and flung it open.
“Let’s go,” Kallard muttered before running out of the room and turning right.
Following close behind Marilini left their room holding her own rifle at the ready as she ran behind her brother. He kept looked down at his watch as they made their way through the barracks looking increasingly more anxious every time he checked it. Nervous glances were cast back at his sister as the pair moved through the dimly lit hallway.
Kallard held up his left hand, balling it into a fist, silently ordering a complete stop. He lowered his left hand and lowered it down to his belt where several fist sized metal canisters lie in wait. Two of the canisters were removed from his belt and he pulled a pin from each one using his teeth before kicking open a door to his right.
Inside the room was the majority of their men, sound asleep in their bunk beds like good little soldiers. With the pins pulled from the grenades, Kallard tossed the two metal cylinders into the room and slammed the door shut. The moment the door was closed there were two soft explosions inside followed by the surprised cries of men and women. Unseen by the twins the room quickly filled up with a yellow tainted smoke, a powerful sedative Kallard had stolen from the armory. Kallard would then repeat this process twice more, each at different rooms full of soldiers, making sure to take out as many men as possible.
Someone tried opening the door only to find that Kallard still had the doorknob in hand, keeping the door closed. Whoever it was started pounding on the door which grew weaker after a few seconds before falling completely silent. The twins waited for a minute to ensure that they were all asleep before they continued their advance through the barracks. Several twists and turns later a large metal door stood before them, a thin coat of snow lining the floor in front of the door.
“And now we wait,” Kallard said quietly, turning to look back at his sister. “You ready? Once we leave there’s no turning back. We’ll be enemies of the state and will most likely have bounties placed on our heads. If you want to change your mind we can stay.”
Marilini looked up at her brother shook her head gently, reaching out with her free hand to place it on his shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze. She didn’t need to speak for her twin to know what she was thinking. Kallard offered his sister a weak smile before glancing back down at his watch. He let out a nervous laugh and looked past Mari, focusing on the door.
Outside the silence was disturbed by one explosion followed by a second, then a third and then a fourth. The lights in the barracks flickered with each detonation, dust raining down from the ceiling to coat the twins in a thin coat of grime. Shortly after the explosions an alarm rang out through the entire complex, blaring loudly through speakers built into the hallway.
Normally the entire platoon would be rushing out of their room but thanks to the sedatives they were all sound asleep, unable to react to the alarm. The twins looked at each other for a brief second before Kallard took lead once more. He kicked open the metal door leading outside and immediately sprinted out into the bitter cold night, rifle up and ready to be fired.
The moment the two left the quiet barracks they were met with the sounds of chaos. Men were shouting at other men, the loudest of them all shouting about lazy soldiers not responding to the alarm. Unable to see anyone in their immediate area Kallard shot out of the barracks and quickly made his way over to the large concrete wall. He ducked down and Marilini took up position in front of him, scanning the area with her rifle while he stuck an explosive to the wall. A metal spike was driven into the slightly soft plastic explosive, a wire leading from the spike to a small handheld detonator.
Kallard stood back up, tapped his sister on the shoulder and ran off to the left, Marilini following him. The twins ran and took cover behind some metal crates filled with miscellaneous supplies. Popping his head up over the crates Kallard quickly glanced around before ducking back down and detonating the explosive.
The ground shook from the force of the explosion, large chunks of debris flying in every direction. A particularly large chunk of concrete went soaring through the air and took the head off a deactivated Vanguard. The large machine slowly toppled over, hitting the snow covered ground with a dull thump. Before the men and women on the base could react to the second round of explosions several more bombs went off, one for each guard tower and one planted on a large ammo crate.
Bits and pieces of metal and stone rained down from the night sky, peppering the base with debris. The base was alight with activity, confused and tired soldiers trying to figure out what was going on and who was attacking them. Using this confusion to their advantage the twins quietly slipped out from their cover and ran through the hole that Kallard had just created with his explosives. With the guard towers on this side of the wall taken care of there was no around to watch as the twins sprinted away from the base.
“Eyes forward. Don’t look back. Don’t stop running until I say so,” Kallard ordered his sister as they rushed through the snow covered landscape.
It wasn’t until two hours later that Kallard finally slowed down, confident that they put enough space between them and the base. They would be too busy figuring out what was going on before realizing that the twins had went AWOL. The twins huddled together for warmth as they caught their breath, Kallard keeping a close eye on the direction that had just fled from. He could see the fires from the explosions from several miles away, confident that he had done a good enough job with his distraction. It would probably be several hours before the realized what had just happened, giving them a head start on their escape.
“Well, looks like we’re okay,” Kallard said, speaking for the first time since they had left. He looked over at his sister with a weak smile. “We’re gonna have to hoof it for a little while. Once we find town we can get some mounts to take us the rest of the way.”
Marilini looked over at her brother and nodded at his words. It hadn’t been his idea to leave, but hers. After their commanding officer had done what he did Marilini wanted nothing more than to leave and start over. The twins had grown sick of blindly following orders, the blood of innocents weighing heavily on their consciousnesses. They had decided on relocating to Ul’dah, knowing the city was rife with illegal activity, a perfect place for a pair of fugitives to hide away.
“Finally, we get to start over and do things right this time,” Kallard said as he looked up at the stars. “Mom would be proud of us.”
-----
Present day
Kallard let out a yawn, covering his mouth with a hand. Finding himself with nothing to do, he decided to waste time at Pearl Lane. Marilini was safe back home, reading the new books he had brought for her the other day before getting revenge on their commanding officer. Whenever Kallard had nothing to do he would dwell on his past and the terrible things he had been forced to do. He desperately wanted to do better, but he knew that it would be impossible for him to be a good, honest man.
He looked at the others assembled in the Lane with a look of disinterest. A cigarette hung limp from his lips, the smoke drifting lazily into the air. After earning some gil, he had went out and bought himself a new outfit, the old one littered with holes and stains, using the rest of the money on more books for his sister. His dark blue eyes studied the faces, recognizing none of them.
Times like these would be better if he had stable income. Kallard had already grown restless, the year in Ul’dah being the longest time they had stayed in one place. During their time in the military they had gotten used to moving from place to place, death following in their wake. He hoped that a job would land in his lap, but the realist in him knew that wouldn’t happen. Good things don’t happen to men like Kallard.
And so he stood there, waiting for something interesting to happen.
“Gods, this is so fucking boring,” he muttered to himself before closing his eyes and turning the outside world out.

Tell me a story about a fever dream.
In the dream, John was a college student again. On a cold night in the middle of winter, he was studying for an exam he had promised to prepare for several weeks earlier, when his attention was drawn to a sudden, inexplicable sound behind him.
He turned to look and saw that a large classroom had been transformed into a grove, with bare oak trees in the middle of the room and fairy lights strung between them. The mood was one of cold, elegant simplicity, appropriate to the season and the occasion. A figure stood near the front of the classroom, a woman, wearing a long, fur-lined coat, a little old-fashioned though not out-of-date, with a small, wiry woman beside her. From under the edge of her fur-trimmed hood, her hands were thrust out, displaying small white objects in which she took an proprietary interest.
They were playing a game of chess, and the game was tense. Both pieces were moving rapidly back and forth across the board. When John watched her, he saw that the white queen was leaping like a fairy-tale princess, throwing out her hands to stop the pieces on either side, while her companion's piece trundled grimly back and forth. As he watched she grew more and more excited, until her whole body was trembling, and then she began to speak in a rapid monologue. It went something like this:
I had a dream last night, John... all of us did... we're not the only ones to have it... I know you didn't have it, because you're strong... but you see, it doesn't matter, because when you're weak, dreams can come true... because they can make you weak.
And then she looked up and saw he was awake.
But he wasn't. He could not have been more awake if he had stretched, yawned, and then gotten out of bed. He was lying on his back, staring up at the ceiling, and the dream seemed more real than real itself.
The fairy-tale princess was looking straight down at him. As he watched her, the expression on her face changed slowly: from fascination to fear to despair. And in the same instant, her whole small, wiry figure was enveloped by tendrils of ropy white moss, which grew and spread until her whole form was obscured, except for her face. Her fur-trimmed hood became a huge, fluffy green plant above her head. When the tendrils and fronds were fully extended, they had grown several feet into the air, and the entire illusion of the classroom had been enveloped in a cocoon of living mossy vines, which undulated slowly in the nonexistent wind, casting a dreamlike shadow over the room.
But the young woman herself was still there, or rather still there and not there both at the same time. A face still looked down at John, now set in an expression of horror and revulsion. Her arms and hands were flung wide, as if for protection. Above her head, the tendrils and fronds of the mossy foliage nodded and trembled, as if from some internal, unseen source.
John wanted to call out to the young woman. But her mouth was still working, still moving, though no sound came out. One of her hands was moving as well, tracing intricate patterns in the air; though the movements were too quickly for him to follow, they produced, in quick succession, a mournful melody, a complex harmony, and then an image he recognized. "Oh," she said. "My poor children."
There was something horrible there, something that John did not want to see. And yet he kept staring.
He saw the classroom again, with the young woman in its center, playing her grotesque game of chess, surrounded by her white rooks and bishops, her kings and castles, her knights and castles knightly, her lances and cannons. She herself was a young woman, slim and young and pretty. She was the first woman John had ever felt drawn to in this way, with a combination of attraction and fear, and so he had pursued her doggedly, ignoring the other women he knew, who found her strangeness off-putting. But the more he got to know her, the more he wanted to understand: what frightened other women so of her plucky, headstrong ways; what it was that made him feel young and strong when he was with her. There was a special bond between them, of shared and mutual fascination. And when they were intimate, something else, something that she did not feel with him but that he felt with her, something that had not been felt in a long time —
He pulled back in disgust, out of some old memories of primal fear, of an all-too-close primal fear, and he began to weep.
For a moment, one last, fleeting moment, it seemed as if the young woman had known he was awake. In one desperate, final attempt to communicate, the pattern on her hand began to evolve. It became a short, disjointed story, familiar to him. The young woman had been telling him about the dream that all of them had had, and the story was not a happy one:
He had found them huddling together in the old oak grove, the children of the forest. They were frightened and confused, and for the most part incoherent, speaking in a babble of tongues, speaking in their own tongues, speaking in a language he could not understand but a language that was almost English, spoken with accents that suggested they had been brought up in cities. They had told him they were not safe, there were things outside the forest that followed them, and wanted to hurt them. They were all that was left of mankind.
They were frightened and confused, yet seemed to cling to this strange American who had appeared from nowhere, who listened to what they had to say and asked many questions — where they had come from, why they had lost their memories of other places, why the strange instruments on their land never spoke to one another. And what they had told him had moved him to pity — he, John, a man! — for they were a pitiable lot, suffering from a dreadful disease, a disease they called "the sickness of the soul."
Then one day, a great fog came over the land, and when it cleared, it was over the whole world. As far as the eye could see stood endless flat tables and chairs, empty and lifeless. There was nothing on them, nothing, not a trace of what they had been used to before. And over everything hung an inescapable silence, the silence of unused things. And then he, John, was gone. And he never saw her again.
At that moment, the shadow on the ceiling began to move more quickly, as if caught in a gust of wind. Vines and fronds whipped across the classroom, branches scraped along walls and chairs, the white chess pieces, the fairy lights, bobbed furiously. Outside, all the trees in the grove swayed in unison, casting deep dusky shadows across the grass. A sudden gale arose, and the front door slammed open. For a moment, the grove was suffused with moonlight, and then suddenly the room was plunged into darkness.
In the darkness he could still see, but it was not the young woman now who watched him. It was some other, older woman, a witch. She had a hooked nose, a hawkish face, greasy hair that had gone almost entirely gray. She looked like the meanest, most jaded old hag he had ever seen — and he had seen many hags in his life. But it was her eyes that took his breath away. They bulged from their sockets, they rolled around strangely, like marbles in an invisible machine. She laughed — a laugh thick with maniacal mirth — and opened her mouth wide. She could have bitten him in half with her teeth and no one would have blamed her.
In her were contained the centuries, and even millennia. She had seen what no one had seen for thousands of years, and she took perverse pleasure in it. It pleased her to know that she was not the only one. And she could take no more. There was something grotesquely wrong with her face, something that he had not seen before and could not have imagined, some monstrosity that was not quite human. And she, who had not had a man in her bed in centuries, felt his young flesh suddenly course with warm blood, and she wanted it, wanted his youth back and back again, wanted it with a ravening, insatiable hunger, a hunger so great it threatened to tear her apart.
In the darkness, the chess game continued. The poor white queen trundled back and forth across the board, over and over again, while on either side her opponents, the young woman's knights, talked and argued and jested. They were oblivious; the chess scene was only a backdrop to their private drama.
He fled from the room in terror.
