No, you are not alone. I also start things, give up, procrastinate, live the future and not the present and complain about my life not moving forward while I spend time looking at other people's lives.
Tumblr media
Hello everyone, how are you?
I hope well.
I was thinking of giving up this tumblr and just as I started everything from scratch to study programming (github, linkedin, notion and I even created another google account) start a new tumblr.
I even commented briefly a few weeks ago with @lostlibrariangirl who supported me to just continue on this one and see my evolution. And today I was thinking that this could be cool not only for me, but for other dropouts, who are frustrated that they think they'll never get to where they want to go and et cetera.
If you've been following me since the beginning of this year, you've already seen that I never completed any course and I assume that I gave up on the most difficult parts, besides the constant anxiety of getting a job in technology and thinking that I would never get it and that made me procrastinate, suffer and not live the present studying.
I gave up on one of the scholarships I got and now I'm catching up on the delay (it's until the 7/30th)
Nowadays my mental health has improved a lot, thanks to my elders.
And also thanks to them I understood that I was going around in circles, being lazy, not trying 100%, being stubborn in a stupid way (for me stubbornness is a quality, if you know how to use it) and spending too much time on other people's lives and not mine.
Also, today it's easier for me not to feel so much anxiety because I no longer have the goal of getting a job registered as a dev this year, so I'm starting to learn from scratch EVERYTHING AGAIN only this time better and really trying hard.
In my case I wasn't doing my best, trying hard and that's why I fell so many times. I don't like the word failure/failure, as I learned from an older, mistake it's study/learning and not failure.
Now in May, for example, I started studying Linux from scratch (my system that I'm confused to understand), git and github. I was all this time without really understanding these 3 tools, just doing it without understanding / in a lazy way and that didn't give me confidence.
And I don't think we need to memorize it, but it's nice to understand and practice.
Tumblr media
This print from above is me studying after writing and repeating to myself that I WILL ONLY START a new cycle after ending the old one.
And I hope to share this journey here.
I have a lot to study, whether in back-end or front-end, but I'm not in a hurry and that's why I'm progressing.
So if you're reading this far and you're going through the same thing I was, I wanted to give you some unsolicited advice.
Spend your energy, do physical exercises. Because anxiety can only be resolved with a psychiatrist, but exercises help.
Understand why you procastine, what is making you feel frustrated or afraid? Did you find out? How can you solve this?
If you don't finish something to start another and it HURTS you (if it doesn't hurt, that's fine), try to understand why you give up? Where is making you insecure / afraid? And after you understand this, strive to finish everything you start (I know it's hard, but we need this)
Get off social media for a bit. For me tumblr is what I spend the least time on, but it's very easy to lose hours on instagram and tiktok.
And guess what, that time we spend doesn't come back and unless you work with these networks that ALSO won't give you any money / jobs.
So, if possible, start to regulate your period in these environments. At first it's difficult because your brain is addicted, but after a while it works out and your version of the future (if you invest that time studying and working) will thank you.
I wish you all to be well and not sabotage yourself to achieve your goals.

I loved it here, because in our neurotypical society everything is between the lines.
And if you're neurodivergent, you don't understand these hidden rules that others take for granted. I wish more stuff breathed manual/help to prepare like this.
And I hate how in our society judged as a neurodivergent person as wrong, and it's the rest who don't know how to be objective.
Like why do you want me to answer b if you ask me a? I'm not the dumb or aggressive one in the story, but you who don't know how to communicate objectively and directly.

Content Creation
Which kind of content do you like to create? We are living in a fast-changing world where AI is very much a reality, a lot of tasks are being automated, and means of communication are also changing. Social media, consumption of content in terms of fast short-form videos is on the rise. The short-form video content platform is set to replace the long form content type, information- crisp,ā€¦

On wednesday i used gpt chat to understand a study algorithm and it gave me two different answers.
And that was good, because it forced me to break down the algorithm to understand it (with his help) and now I'm going to practice + study to see if my analysis is correct.
But if lazy people (and we have many prog newbies like that, including myself sometimes) use it thinking that the answer will be absolutely correct, they will get frustrated or find out in a bad way that it is wrong.
I see a lot of people on tumblr getting really cocky about "how could this person believe that ChatGPT would give them real information and then present it to other people as the truth without verifying what an idiot" considering that they're chilling on the share screenshot, eat hot chip, and lie website.

Daily Journey : Day 1
Tumblr media
This tumblr started with me just wanting to share my coding journey in November of last year.
No pressure of wanting likes, followers or anything like that. Just share in a safe place.
And I understand that now that has changed. Now I worry about the reach of my posts, I worry about people thinking I'm a failure and that I won't get things and likes.
And all this is useless in my life. I don't have to show anyone anything and I don't need to be liked, etc.
And I don't want that for myself.
So I thought about keeping my diary about this stage in my personal life private, as I already do with my emotions/days normally.
But I also think it might be cool to have that record here.
So, for now I'm here and overcoming my desire to start a tumblr from scratch (I always start something from scratch when I want to feel free). Now this idea is not so cool in my head. But I love seeing my old posts that I was thinking about giving up and now I'm in a better place.
Anyway:
Notes on the first day.
In general, I was very anxious, insecure because I don't know how to socialize with strangers who don't know what they're going to ask me. I need to know what is going to be said or know the subject to feel good. But it was nice and fun, they made it friendly.
We introduce ourselves in a fun way to get to know each other.
We learned more about project delivery and the like.
We had a 30m class where we talked about web introduction. Like mozilla, url, domain etc.
+++ I know that on tumblr the post photo dynamic is different, but I want to keep it standard. So I will follow my rules, because this is my account.
If you are reading this post, I wish you to be well, have discipline and consistency to achieve your goals.
Update notes:
As they leave the classes recorded, I went to watch it now and found a lot of doubts.
1. I paid attention on the recording (I don't pay attention live, maybe this will improve and maybe not)
2. I wrote down the questions
3. I researched each one and left some to ask in class because they want us to do this.
And now I'm feeling productive.
I didn't let it pile up, I did what had to be done and I'm ready for tonight's class.
I think I'll set the default of my posts for after rewatching the classes.
Have a great night, afternoon or morning.

ā‹†. how to find tech communities ā‹†.ą³ƒąæ”*:ļ½„
Having a good supportive community while learning can be super helpful! It's always nice to be able to find a group of individuals who are also going through the same thing you are. Here are some ways I have found communities in the tech sphere ćƒ½(ā—•į“„ā—•)ļ¾‰
Meetup Meetup creates possibilities to find and build local communities who share your interests! Here's an example of some groups I've joined:
Tumblr media
Newsletters Newsletters are also a great way to get information about cool events/meetups happening in the tech space ā˜†.ļ½”.:* I am personally subscribed to Lizzie, she posts about events happening in Sf and NY. (you don't actually have to subscribe to read her current and past posts, just hit the "no thanks" under the entry box)
Twitter Many companies or dev advocates/community builders who work at x company will post a ton about upcoming meetups hosted by them! So I highly recommend you find a company or community you'd like to be a part off and follow them on twitter (ā–°Ė˜ā—”Ė˜ā–°) here are some I follow: SFClimateWeek ReactMiamiConf DevsNDumps SeattleJS GirlCode PayPalDev RenderATL Postman AhmadAwais Whitep4nth3r Official_GDC LWJShow GitHubEducation WomenTechmakers hackclub hacktoberfest femtechconf cassidoo pwic_org lesbiantech OutInTech PrideinSTEM GoogleStudents CodeNewbies
Discord There are sooooo many amazing huge communities on discord for each community within tech, here are some I recommend: DesignBuddies: focus is on ux/ui designers, ux research, pm, graphic design LearnWLeon(100Devs): HUGE community of beginner to intermediate software devs. It's also a completely free bootcamp! DiscordDevs: discords server is a great place to learn about different discord features to better help you navigate other servers you join. You also can get 1on1 help with building discord bots which is such a fun thing to work on! My Server: I try really hard to curate a welcoming and helpful community. If you ever need any help with hw, projects, or even general tech career help we're all super down to help Ź•ć£ā€¢ā€æā€¢Ź”ć£
I hope this helps ā™”

Don't be cowards and talk shit on the ask of people who help the community and FIGHTED A LOT to get to where they are.
Anonymous ask came through | My story
Tumblr media
I accidently deleted their ask, so I'll answer it here
Someone messaged anonymously me saying I was privileged to get the apprenticeship and that I shouldn't be sharing tips on my blog about Junior Developer roles since Iā€™m ā€œexperiencedā€ (I've only worked for 1 year and 5 months which my apprenticeship lasted for one year).
The anonymous person mentioned they have been studying for 6 months and still haven't found a tech job or the job they wanted. They mentioned that I shouldn't be making posts and share tips because I'm at a privalge position coming from attending an apprenticeship and I don't relate to what they're struggling with - to that I'm sorry it's been hard for you, I wouldn't wish that for anyone studying entirely on their own. please keep trying, don't give up.
But what the anonymous person doesn't know is how hard things were for me and my family for many years to even get me to where I am today.
Tumblr media
I am privileged to be in the UK to be able attend school, privileged to get accepted into an apprenticeship after doing two exams for it but:
I come from a family who were classed as "very low income" by the government for many years and only recently we broke out of that.
I learnt HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Python on my own before the apprenticeship gave lessons on it and by then I already knew the topics.
The apprenticeship didnā€™t teach me Git or GitHub or how to set up VS Code or Visual Studio - I taught myself online.
I learnt SQL and C# from YouTube because the teacher was so bad at explaining things.
I only passed the two required exams for the apprenticeship after failing 3 times - which I posted about it on my blog.
I taught myself the tech I use today, the apprenticeship did was secure me a job and having a Lead Web Developer to shadow, though he had his own projects he was busy on.
When I realised the apprenticeship wasnā€™t going to teach me everything I needed to learn for my tech career, I joined and completed a free online night coding bootcamp from the government and studied for 16 weeks whilst having the apprenticeship and work to attend to.
All I do on my blog, my little tiny corner of the internet, is share my progress, tips through tutorials, write posts about a topic I learnt recently and share information I get from attending those career masterclasses that free for people to join in the UK. I want to help people, not to flaunt my success. Iā€™ve failed lots of times and posted about them on here - exams, work projects and even my own personal projects.
I may not be a self-taught with no experience and suddenly got a great tech job that the anonymous messenger wanted me to, but Iā€™m still going to share my experience and tips that might help people out their own their own coding journey (thatā€™s why I end some of my posts with ā€œI hope this helps someone out thereā€). If youā€™re looking for someone that is self-taught and got a successful tech job from no previous experience, I don't think I am that person for you to follow, there would be no point following my blog because I got the role through an apprenticeship - the job was not secure though as I had to pass or they would have fired me.
So, I apologise to the anonymous person who messaged me who looked at my blog and was upset with me sharing tips on coding and it seemed like I came from that specific background they wanted me to be. However, I wonā€™t stop sharing posts, beacuse someone out there might appreciate them and if no one does, thatā€™s 100% a-okay! My blog is also a record of my coding journey and Iā€™m not going to stop! :D
All I do is to make my Dad proud. Through things didn't go well for him over the years, I hope that when he sees me, he's proud and felt like after everything, I was worth it.
Tumblr media
My family consisted of a single dad with two daughters since late 2000s UK. Mother left because she didnā€™t want the responsibility of looking after me and my sister. My father gave up everything to solely look after us - that meant not getting a job. We were in the benefits system for years after years, only in 2021 did we end it completely, so basically two years ago. I didnā€™t have much growing up and I mean the bare minimum. The only games I had were The Sims 3 base game and games on my Nokia brick.
The benefits money he got, he tried to get me and my sister to a private school just for us to see what it was like, but it only lasted a year before he realised the money was not enough. Dad made me and my sister really study hard to get into an all-girls independent school - a school where you have to take exams to get in. I took those exams and got into the school in 2013. When dad saw the confirmation letter, he cried. All his hard work was paying off. That inspired him to try university out, doing computer science.
It was when I finished secondary school I got my first iPhone in 2018 from Dad as a ā€œwell done for completing your GCSEsā€ gift. However, I didnā€™t do good enough to do the subjects I wanted to go and do medicine, so I had to switch my course from Biology, Chemistry and Maths to English Language, Combined Science and Economics. Iā€™m grateful for economics, made me understand the government and the world a bit more (and understand what the hell news was talking about most of the time)!
I was failing. Miserably. I was pressured from my school to retake the year, so my dad advised me to quit and join a community college instead. In there they let me to my 3 subjects to do Medicine at university. However, I was failing again, had health issues which lead to me having to quit school early. I never completed my A-Levels. I was stuck for months doing nothing when I decided to get a call centre job. Liked it but last for only 3 months. I was inspired to learn programming again but properly so I can get a job. I realised how hard for self-taught beginner programmers to get a job, and I knew I would be in the mix but my dad was already struggling at home and I needed money fast to help him.
I started looking for apprenticeships even if it doesnā€™t pay similarliy to a full time job, itā€™s something to help dad. I was still of age to apply to the ones I kept seeing so I applied to a bunch. No answer. I kept learning Python and JavaScript and applied more. Then one came back saying they wanted an interview. They didnā€™t tell me the first interview was going to be an exam?! Last an hour and a half and then they talked to me afterwards. Got another interview with them - exam. And the last was talking to one of the partners of the company.
When I told my Dad I got the apprenticeship, he cried again. I knew he felt like I was failing left right and centre and he was a little bit losing hope on me, but for everything heā€™s done for me and my sister, I couldnā€™t let him down. And guess what my Dad did when I told him I completed my apprenticeship last month? Yep, he cried.
And I thank the gods and the universe everyday for the opportunity I was given to have done an apprenticeship because I can help my family more as I do have people here and around the world who depend on me and want me to suceed, so I will take every chance and opportunity I can get.
Dad said "If you're entitled to it, grab it. Any opportunty, grab it. You never know when it'll come back to greet you again"

Day 47: 100 Days of Infosec
My New Position as a Web Application Pentester
I was able to obtain this position through the power of LinkedIn. In The Ultimate Guide for Getting into Cybersecurity for Beginners, I explain how utilizing your LinkedIn account as a portfolio and network can help you get recognized. In my case, I took my advice, and it allowed me to win this position. I was in Louisiana visiting for Christmas, and I had set my Linkedin profile to be open for networking. During my last week there, a recruiter reached out to me about a position that involved hacking, knowing OWASP Top 10, and remediating security holes; I was all in. Luckily, I completed my remote six-month internship with Safer Internet Project while also working. Safer Internet Project taught me about penetration testing, exploiting different vulnerabilities, using various hacking tools, etc. As a result, I scored a remote opportunity with a reputable company within four months of their training. I highly recommend anyone interested in transitioning into an ethical hacking career check out Safer Internet Project. You won't regret it! Massive shoutout to David and Gareth for being incredible mentors and having the best live pentesting calls.
Chapter 1 & 2 Bug Bounty Bootcamp: Picking a Bug Bounty Program and Sustaining Your Success
I've been interested in bug bounty hunting for a few years now, and I wasn't sure where to start. It seemed like a taboo subject before receiving Bug Bounty Bootcamp by Vickie Li from No Starch Press. The book begins in chapter one, detailing the different bug bounty programs and helping you pick the right one. A bug bounty program is program companies can run that allows hackers to hack on potentially vulnerable products or services they offer to the public. If the hackers find a legitimate vulnerability, they can get paid a bounty or receive reputation points. Hackerone, Bugcrowd, and Intigriti are three different types of bug bounty platforms on which hackers can find various bug programs. To successfully find bugs on these platforms, most hackers utilize Burp Suite. This web application pentesting tool analyzes the overall functionality of websites. I have been completing labs on PortSwigger academy, a resource offered by Burp Suite, to become certified in web app hacking. It also helps to know about web vulnerabilities, how different programming languages work, and web development to find bugs.
I've decided to participate in a VDP (Vulnerability Disclosure Program) to start. You don't get a bounty for VDP programs but reputation points instead to get access to more private programs the more skilled you get. These programs are also less competitive and can be used as a learning experience to talk to security engineers about improving your hacking skills. After picking a program and getting my first approved security bug, I'm going to continue to sustain my success so I can continue to become a better hacker. Chapter two gives an excellent outline for beginner hackers to maintain their success in bug bounty and how to build a great relationship with the security team. Supporting your success as a bug bounty hunter involves writing great security reports. A security report is a business document helping companies keep their assets secure and potentially provides you payment for assisting them. It's best to make sure you have all of the recommended components of a security report and to make sure it's clear and concise for your reader. Anyone can sustain success in bug bounty by knowing how to deal with conflict during payout disagreements and being professional throughout the entire process. Building relationships with security engineers, keeping your skills fresh and new, and knowing when to take breaks when needed can help you continue to be successful as well. Participating in bug bounty is hard, and it may take me some time to find my first legitimate bug. However, nothing can stop me if I continue studying and applying what I'm learning. I have also been getting first-hand experience with a famous bug bounty hunter on Twitter. I have been providing help and insight on programs he's hacking in to get my hands wet while also learning new tools and hunting techniques. Soon I'll have enough knowledge to share with you guys.
Where is the Digital Empress Brand Going?
The Digital Empress is still here to stay. Instead of focusing so much of my energy outward and across different platforms to inspire and educate, I'll solely be here and on Youtube. I've decided to make my content more journey-focused rather than service-based. I've come to a point where I've gotten bored, and it's not enjoyable anymore. I want to go back to my roots and show you all what new skills I'm learning and the latest projects I create. I also want to own my content and not have a third party taking out a percentage just for hosting my products and content. One day I'll eventually move away from Youtube as well. The Discord and Buy Me a Coffee service is no longer accessible or active, and I'm back to #100DaysofInfosec. Having a baby also changed my perspective heavily on making this decision. Now that I'm a mother, I want to teach him everything I know and give him all the attention in the world. Hopefully, he'll be saying bug bounty and SQL injection by age two. Thank you all for sticking around this long to see me and my brand grow, and I plan to continue growing and reaching new heights. I'm so excited to share this new journey with all of you!

Introductory post, the purpose of this blog, and backstory
Hello, Iā€™m Ravyn (like raven). Iā€™m 28. Currently, Iā€™m pursuing a career in full-stack web development. I have zero prior experience with back-end languages and no college education. I have yet to decide if I want a degree in Computer Information Systems/ Computer Science, or continue learning on my own via online resources & taking individual classes at a local community college.
I decided to blog about my journey into tech to track my progress and hopefully inspire and educate others along the way. There is an over-abundance of misleading resources claiming that their classes, tutorials, bootcamps, and books are all for ā€œbeginnersā€, which are all coming from already-established people in tech that have fell out of touch with being able to effectively communicate coding jargon to those that have never seen print(ā€Hello World!ā€) in their life.
This blog will document what I learn as a completely new and inexperienced student in tech,Ā how Iā€™m learning and retaining the material, my processes, my failed attempts, and my little victories.
Now, some backstory:
I was forced to drop out of college in 2013 due to struggles with housing. My dream at the time was to do my first 2 years at community college, and then pursue graphic design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Without getting into too much detail about my personal life, pursuing higher education at the time was no longer an option due to working full-time as a waitress and trying to survive. Nearly a decade later, I realized sadly that nothing had changed about my life. I moved around a lot, and I was still struggling with money and living hand-to-mouth. I decided that I was fed up, and since I spent a lot of time in front of my laptop anyway (and enjoyed it), web development seemed like the best career option to commit to.
My story is unfortunately common amongst millions of other people that could also not pursue a college education due to circumstances that were (and still may be) out of their control. Silver spoons in life are rare. The rest of us just work with what we got.
I dedicate this blog to people trying to overcome their hardships, leave dead-end jobs, those with underprivileged backgrounds, and volatile upbringings. This blog is for those like me, with no college education and zero experience in tech.
