Recognizing this central ambivalence in regard to so-called Western values—whereby they are cast out as “postmodern authoritarianism” only to be embraced as the “true spirit” of societies to come—is essential to understanding the strategic significance of the anti-gender misappropriation of postcolonial language. This ambivalence sheds light on the fact that the superficial takeover frames the “gender ideology” colonizer not simply as the “West as such but [rather as] the West whose healthy (Christian) core had already been destroyed by neo-Marxism and feminism in the 1960s” (Korolczuk and Graff 2018: 812). Very often, the anti-gender misappropriation takes on a decidedly Islamophobic hue; for all their catering to anticolonial sentiments, anti-gender thinkers often claim that “gender ideology,” with its historical roots in anti-European “neo-Marxism and feminism,” goes hand in hand with the threat of (Muslim) immigration. A blatant example of this can be found in former Cardinal Sarah’s proclamation against the two unexpected threats of our times:
On the one hand, the idolatry of Western freedom; on the other, Islamic fundamentalism: atheistic secularism versus religious fanaticism. To use a slogan, we find ourselves between “gender ideology and ISIS.” . . . From these two radicalizations arise the two major threats to the family: its subjectivist disintegration in the secularized West [and] the pseudo-family of ideologized Islam which legitimizes polygamy [and] female subservience. (Sarah 2015)
Sarah aggressively draws up a dual picture of the true enemy—the biopolitical survival of the family is threatened on the one hand by excessive secularization and sexual freedom, and on the other by “ideologized Islam’s pseudo-family,” which marks the degraded and uncivilized counterpart to Christianity’s proper tradition. This discursive construction of “terrorist look-alikes” as possessing an excessive, uncultivated, and dangerous sexuality yet again plays into the same fundamental racialized mapping of progress that colonial gender undergirded (Puar 2007). This rhetoric is mirrored by Norwegian right-wing politician Per-Willy Amundsen (2021) when he writes that:
I will never celebrate pride. First of all, there are only two sexes: man and woman, not three—that is in contradiction with all biological science. Even worse, they are allowed access to our kids to influence them with their radical ideology. This has to be stopped. If FRI [the national LGBT organization] really cared about gay rights, they would get involved in what is happening in Muslim countries, rather than construct fake problems here in Norway. But it is probably easier to speak about “diversity” as long as it doesn’t cost anything. (Amundsen 2021; translation by author) Here Amundsen draws on the well-known trope of trans* and queer people “preying on our kids” while at the same time reinforcing the homonationalist notion that Europe, and in particular Norway, is a safe h(e)aven for queer people—perhaps a bit too much so. In his response to Amundsen, Thee-Yezen Al-Obaide, the leader of SALAM, the organization for queer Muslims in Norway, aptly diagnoses Amundsen’s rhetoric as “transphobia wrapped in Islamophobia” (as quoted in Berg 2021). Amundsen mirrors a central tenet of TERF rhetoric by claiming to be the voice of science, biology, and reason in order to distinguish his own resistance to “gender ideology” from the repressive, regressive one of Muslims. In this way, his argumentation, which basically claims that trans* people don’t exist and certainly shouldn’t be recognized legally, attempts to come off as benign, while Muslim opposition to “gender ideology” is painted as destructive and anti-modern. This double gesture, which allows Amundsen to have his cake and eat it too, is a central trope in different European iterations of anti-gender rhetoric. In France, for example, such discourse claims that, “while ‘gender ideology’ goes too far on the one hand, the patriarchal control of Islam threatens to pull us back into an excessive past. Here of course, ‘Frenchness’ is always already neither Muslim, nor queer (and certainly not both)” (Hemmings 2020: 30). Therefore the French anti-gender movement sees itself as the defender of true Western civilization, both from Western “gender ideology” and from uncivilized “primitives” who are nevertheless themselves victims of “gender ideology.” A similar dynamic plays out in Britain: “Reading Muslims as dangerous heteroactivists and Christians as benign points to how racialization and religion create specific forms of heteroactivism. . . . Even where ‘Muslim parents’ are supported by Christian heteroactivists, they remain other to the nation, and not central to its defence” (Nash and Browne 2020: 145). In the British example, it is clear that white anti-gender actors represent themselves as moderate, reasonable, and caring—often claiming that their resistance to the “politicization” of the classroom has nothing to do with transphobia and homophobia.

Chapter 1: The Train
ID under cut. Click for better detail. Reblogs > Likes
This TTRPG campaign can be watched on Forrest Valkai's YouTube channel and is a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders
ID: A digital drawing of a train car filled with 6 people and a dog. In the back right is Gwen Copperplate, a white woman with brown hair, glasses, a purple vest, and a cool grey shirt. She leans forward, resting her face on her hands, as she looks towards a dog. Opposite her is Dr. Victor Vindeca, a white man with dark brown hair and a green suit. He is looking through a duffel bag. Next to him sits Eloise van der Graff, a yellow tiefling with bright orange hair. She wears white flowing robes which barely cover her. Opposite her sits Ritha Janis, a black person with curly blonde hair, a dark grey stripped suit jacket, a white shirt, a red ascot, and red pants. Between Ritha and Eloise stands a dark grey dog with white feet which looks up at Gwen. Next to Ritha sits Azad, an arab man with brown hair and a curly mustache who is wearing a blue and orange turban, blue robes, and orange clothes underneath that. He wears a lot of jewelry. Across from him sits Kirke Counterfire, a gold dragonborne woman with dark hair who has gauged ears, a red skirt, a red corset, and a brown shirt which has a mix of mesh and opaque materials. End ID

@supraveng , I accidentally deleted the ask and took longer than intended but here you go.
I have a request for your milestone celebration......can you write a Ransom Drysdale or Nick Fowler story? any scenario you like, just keeping his asshole persona except he's totally soft for the reader?
Traded up
Nick Fowler x Reader, past Ransom Drysdale x Reader
Ransom shattered her heart but Nick put it back together and filled it with love. What happens when they run into each other?
Warnings: swearing, a little angst
Notes: Idk how I ended up with over 700 followers but thanks for joining me for this ride.
Not exactly what you asked for but this is where my brain went. Hope you like it.
This is my first attempt to write anyone other than Bucky so I hope it doesn't suck.
Tried to keep the reader as generic as I could but she's a tall girl, like me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When she walked into the ballroom, people noticed. Over 6 feet tall in heels wearing a long sleeve, boat neck, backless, black silk gown with a slit up her right thigh and 2 strings of diamonds draping down her back. Hair arranged with simple black lacquer combs, a pair of large diamond studs adorned her ears, a colorful Graff Hallucination watch graced her wrist. Simple make up focused on her cat eyes.
She had the look of old money, completely comfortable in her bespoke clothes and long, lithe body.
She looked around, searching for someone and deflated slightly when she couldn't find him. A waiter offered champagne but she waved him off and moved gracefully towards the bar where she ordered a real drink.
Ransom noticed the murmuring and looked up from the blonde he was chatting up but couldn't see who was causing the whispers. He watched the crowd part and saw a woman step up to the bar, her backless dress so low cut he was sure he could see some cleavage. His eyes roamed over her back then opened wide and doubled back when he saw the scar on her left shoulder. From the spring of a trampoline when she was a child.
His heart sped up, he wasn't ready to see her and didn't know if he ever would be. She was the one that got away. He was young and stupid and blew it. Didn't expect to ever see her again, rumour was she had moved to California. He kept watching as she sat gracefully on a barstool and her dress adjusted so he definitely could see some crack. His heart sped up.
The blonde noticed his distraction and tugged on his coat "Raaaann" she whined.
He clenched his jaw "Shut the hell up" spat through gritted teeth, without taking his eyes off of her. His heart ached and he felt hot, unsure of what to do, something he wasn't accustomed to. He decided going full Ransom playboy was the safest call. He couldn't let anyone see how badly he wanted her, how much he missed her.
Y/N sipped her drink and kept her eyes roaming the room until they fell on him. She threw the rest of her drink back and requested another, sighing. She knew there was a good chance Ransom would be here, his mother was on the board of this charity and he always liked seeing how many debutantes he could get into in one evening. She had hoped she wouldn't have to face him alone but she wasn't going to let him see how badly he hurt her. She wouldn't let him know the true effect he had on her.
She was better, stronger now and loved by someone who was willing to put in the work a relationship requires, someone loyal to her, someone who worshipped her. She just wished he was here right now.
She looked at her watch and tapped her perfectly manicured nails on the bar when she felt someone behind her.
"Well, well, look at what the cat dragged in. You look extremely fuckable, as always" Ransom laughed softly.
Y/N turned around slowly, looking him over with contempt. "Hugh."
And turned back to her drink.
Ransom bristled "You know I hate when you call me that."
She shrugged. "Not my problem."
"Don't try to be coy with me. We both came here alone, we'll leave together."
She scoffed "Not if you were the last man on earth, Hugh." She paused "I'm meeting someone."
Ransom laughed "Sure you are sweetheart. Don't make up excuses, if there is someone he shouldn't keep you waiting." He looked her up and down again, licking his lips "I certainly wouldn't leave you alone here."
She laughed "Riight, you'd just run off to fuck someone else in the bathroom, then race back to me stinking of her."
She waved her left hand, showing him the large diamond "I didn't buy this for myself"
He opened his mouth to say something but she put her hand up to stop him and looked at him disdainfully "Please fuck all the way off, Hugh." She spat
Ransom was feeling irritated, the blonde had already moved on and he was horny and determined to hook up with his ex. "Look, Y/N that was the past and it only happened a couple of times. Why do you have to make such a big deal about it?"
The bartender came over to check on her and refilled her drink while Ransom glared at him. She dropped a hundred into the tip jar and Ransom shook his head "Why are you tipping the help, they get paid enough."
Y/N shook her head and chuckled "You still haven't fucked off, Hugh. You might regret that."
"Doubt it." He crowded into her space and lowered his voice "You smell delicious. We can head into the bathroom, they're pretty spacious here. I can fuck you like I used to, make you squeal and mark that pussy as mine. Maybe I'll take a taste and-" he saw her shaking her head and scoffed "Then how about a dance, for old times sake?"
He grabbed her arm and dragged her towards the dance floor, then turned her around grabbed her waist and pulled her back flush against his chest. She tried to pull away when she felt his erection rubbing against her ass.
Ransom pulled back suddenly, distracted by a kerfuffle at the entrance. Y/N took the opportunity to wrench herself free of him and head for the bar but he followed her as she reclaimed her seat at the bar.
"Why the fuck is it so difficult to check my goddamn coat? Is there anyone working here with an IQ over 75? Does that valet even have his drivers license? He looks like he's 12. Unfuckingbelievable." Echoed throughout the room. She shivered at his voice.
Ransom saw a tall man, taller than him, with short dark hair and a 5 o'clock shadow, obviously expensive black suit, rolex on his wrist, walking straight towards them. He looked familiar but Ransom couldn't place him.
Y/N smiled when she heard him and looked at Ransom pointedly "Last chance."
He smirked at her "I'm good here."
She shrugged then gasped when the tall man put his hand on her bare back, his touch and his voice did things to her. His scent wrapped around her, pine and citrus, making her feel safe and aroused at the same time.
He was taller than her, even in her heels, and kissed her cheek before he spoke.
"Sorry I'm late babe, had a damn flat." He looked up at Ransom, knowing full well who he was and what he did.
"Who's your little friend?" Then offered his hand "Nick Fowler"
She smiled "Nicky, this is Hugh. I told you about him. His mother is on the board."
Nick squeezed Ransoms hand a little too tightly and looked him in the eye until Ransom looked away which made Nick smile.
Ransom tried not to wince "Ransom Drysdale, only the help call me Hugh."
Nick nodded "I know all about you Drysdale." He grinned widely "Ever find any purpose in your life beyond fucking debutantes? It'll get old eventually." He squeezed Y/N to him "Best to find a good one and settle down." She smiled up at him with hearts in her eyes.
Ransom bristled and puffed his chest out. Who the fuck Was this guy to talk down to him? He was Ransom fucking Drysdale and this guy was- his train of thought was derailed when Nick leaned down to kiss Y/N and Ransom felt his stomach drop. This guy was the one with Y/N, that's who he was.
Nick looked up after ending the kiss and looked surprised. "You're still here? She's mine and there's nothing you could do to change that so be on your way. I don't want to have to mess up your pretty face in front of all these people."
Y/N just smiled and adjusted herself in her seat. She loved when Nick was possessive and jealous because it led to the best sex, made him almost feral.
Ransom tried to puff up and regain his dominance but it was for naught, Y/N was completely absorbed with Nick, as though Ransom didn't exist. He deflated, looking at her sadly, knowing that he blew the best thing in his life and it was too late to fix it.
As Ransom walked away Y/N poked Nick in the chest "You're so mean, Nicky."
Nick smiled at her "That's because I'm surrounded by idiots and assholes." He cradled her cheek in his hand, feeling his heart speed up when she leaned into him. "Except for you, sweetheart. I'll always be good to you."
He kissed her again, a little more passionate, more needy.
When he pulled away he offered his hand "We already made our donation and the food at these things always sucks. Why don't I take you home and we'll order takeout."
He ran his hand up the slit in her dress "and I'll show you how good I can be to you."
Y/N took his hand, stood up and forced herself to walk next to him, rather than racing to his car so they could hurry home together, Ransom forgotten like yesterdays gossip.
Nick stopped suddenly and pulled her up against him before she knew what he was doing then whispered in her ear
"You know, I've heard the bathrooms here are really nice."
One of the things I think about often with regards to Wayhaven is Rebecca's age, mostly because I think it can add a really interesting level of nuance to an individual player's/Detective's experiences within the game. From what I've seen Mishka has purposefully left it open to the player's interpretation, which I personally really enjoy and am glad for.
To me, Rebecca's age has a pretty wide window of possibilities -- she could have met Rook and had the Detective quite young, or with how career-driven she is, it could have been far later in life! And I do think those differences would shape the Detective's, the player's, and probably even Unit Bravo's impression of her just a little depending what her age is.
Edit: adding a readmore because I realize this got a bit long!
You could have a young Rebecca who had the Detective at maybe... 25 or 27, and if the Detective isn't much older than 25 themself she's only around 50 - which is a sharp contrast to a Rebecca who has an older child when she herself was older. If your Detective is 35, and Rebecca had them at 35 or even later, she could be older than 70!
You can be fit as hell at 70+ years old (and one of my favorite examples of this is Ginny MacColl, 71, mother of stunt woman Jessie Graff -- the both of whom are competing in the next season of American Ninja Warrior) but there are also physical changes a person's body experiences at that age. Bones can be less dense, muscles less elastic -- healing can take longer. Injuries can be more impactful.
Obviously Rebecca doesn't have to be that old, but I always have fun asking 'but what if that WAS the case'. Especially considering the immortal elements of Unit Bravo's powers. What must it be like to know someone for that long, to see them age, and be unchanged yourself? Is it more impactful for some of members UB than others? For the Detective, would her being older change how they feel about her showing back up? For something like the Auction scene in Book 3, would your Detective make a different choice on Rebecca accompanying them if they have a younger Rebecca vs an older one?
I'd love to hear from people about it too -- how old do you imagine Rebecca to be? Does her age make any difference to your Detective, positive or negative or otherwise? Is it different for different Detectives, if you have more than one?
#the wayhaven chronicles#twc blogging#twc rebecca#for Kira I def imagine her Rebecca around her mid 50s#Kira herself is only 24 (a yougin)#and I love the detective looking so much like Rebecca specifically for how uncanny it can be for UB to see a past version of their friend#in the MC#if only lookswise but#also obviously i dont know if this conversation has been had already i just thought it was fun to talk about!
March was a productive month, and not just because I read a good number of books. I also started writing again after a bit of a slump, and I managed to unhaul 37 books from my home library, though some of them have not actually left the house yet. The used bookstore I went to didn't take everything so I have to decide which one I'm hitting next. Or if I'm dumping the bulk on a thrift store because let's be honest, most used bookstores aren't going to want what's left either.
Can you tell I got rid of that many? Only if you saw the state of things before. My shelves are neat and tidy with no books wedged on top of other books to make things fit.
And I was so, so close to ending the month without buying more books! I really thought I was going to manage it! And then, well, I mentioned the used bookstore, right? I've been meaning to read Delaney but few bookstores stock him, and Lincoln's Dreams is one of the only Connie Willis novels I don't own. (That shop also had stickers, and a cute bookmark I can't show you because whiting out the identifying features would ruin the effect.) Under the Smokestrewn Sky was a rescue, of sorts. Why return it to the publisher when you could just buy it, right?
Anyway, in terms of books read, there were some really good ones! And only one that was not so great. I think I'm done reading and collecting Rat Queens and might need to include those in the next unhaul. And don't get me wrong about the Evie Dunmore. It is a Good Historical Romance Novel. There's just something about it that didn't work for me.
Click through to see everything I read this month, in the rough order of how glad I was to have read them.
NASA's Artemis II crew uses Iceland terrain for lunar training
Black and gray sediment stretches as far as the eye can see. Boulders sit on top of ground devoid of vegetation. Humans appear almost miniature in scale against a swath of shadowy mountains. At first glance, it seems a perfect scene from an excursion on the moon's surface … except the people are in hiking gear, not spacesuits.
Iceland has served as a lunar stand-in for training NASA astronauts since the days of the Apollo missions, and this summer the Artemis II crew took its place in that long history. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, along with their backups, NASA astronaut Andre Douglas and CSA astronaut Jenni Gibbons, joined geology experts for field training on the Nordic island.
"Apollo astronauts said Iceland was one of the most lunar-like training locations that they went to in their training," said Cindy Evans, Artemis geology training lead at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. "It has lunar-like planetary processes—in this case, volcanism. It has the landscape; it looks like the moon. And it has the scale of features astronauts will both be observing and exploring on the moon."
Iceland's geology, like the moon's, includes rocks called basalts and breccias. Basalts are dark, fine-grained, iron-rich rocks that form when volcanic magma cools and crystalizes quickly. In Iceland, basalt lavas form from volcanoes and deep fissures.
On the moon, basalts can form from both volcanoes and lava pooling in impact basins. Breccias are angular fragments of rock that are fused together to create new rocks. In Iceland, volcanic breccias are formed from explosive volcanic eruptions and on the moon, impact breccias are formed from meteoroids impacting the lunar surface.
Along with exploring the geology of Iceland, the astronauts practiced navigation and expeditionary skills to prepare them for living and working together, and gave feedback to instructors, who used this as an opportunity to hone their instruction and identify sites for future Artemis crew training. They also put tools to the test, learning to use hammers, scoops, and chisels to collect rock samples.
"The tools we used during the Apollo missions haven't changed that much for what we're planning for the Artemis missions," said Trevor Graff, exploration geologist and the hardware and testing lead on the Artemis science team at NASA Johnson. "Traditionally, a geologist goes out with just standard tool sets of things like rock hammers and scoops or shovels to sample the world around them, both on the surface and subsurface."
The Artemis tools have a bit of a twist from traditional terrestrial geology tools, though. Engineers must take into consideration limited mass availability during launch, how easy it is to use a tool while wearing pressurized gloves, and how to ensure the pristine nature of the lunar samples is preserved for study back on Earth.
"There's really transformational science that we can learn by getting boots back on the moon, getting samples back, and being able to do field geology with trained astronauts on the surface," said Angela Garcia, exploration geologist and an Artemis II science officer at NASA Johnson.
The Artemis II test flight will be NASA's first mission with crew under Artemis and will pave the way to land the first woman, first person of color, and first international partner astronaut on the moon on future missions. The crew will travel approximately 4,600 miles beyond the far side of the moon. While the Artemis II astronauts will not land on the surface of the moon, the geology fundamentals they develop during field training will be critical to meeting the science objectives of their mission.
These objectives include visually studying a list of surface features, such as craters, from orbit. Astronauts will snap photos of the features, and describe their color, reflectivity, and texture—details that can reveal their geologic history.
"Having humans hold the camera during a lunar pass and describe what they're seeing in language that scientists can understand is a boon for science," said Kelsey Young, lunar science lead for Artemis II and Artemis II science officer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "In large part, that's what we're training astronauts to do when we take them to these moon-like environments on Earth."
- the people running it were super nice :3 had so much fun and was minorly social (well done.) (he told me I did a good job and gave me the craziest noogie I felt like I was transported to 2004)
- got back, had some lunch and hit the skatepark, jammed to some interesting music and watched bro fall right on his hip super hard. it's always tough seeing him be in a lot of pain but he grabbed onto me so I could soothe him which was nice.
- went back into the city to go smoke somewhere and ran into the craziest woman ever. like ever. she was really drunk and asking if I had a lighter so I handed her it and then she started telling us the most insane stories about her life and how she was a retired pilot and oh my god. she gave us a cigarette and a sip of wine from a bottle in her backpack and then marched us to the store to buy more of both with her??? while intermittently taking calls from her Italian friend who was trying to find her on the streets . notably she said my hair was very cute and ruffled it a lot - and also kept saying "love is love" and "I am very kind" ???? she was YAPPING. anyway we got her to the Italian guy and she gave us like 4 more fags so W.
- went to go "What The fuck???" and have our relaxed +6 cigarette evening, had a scenic mindfuck as the headrush kicked in and my pal said something offhandedly which sparked an epiphany about my trouble defining relationships "nothing specific"
- moved, had the 2nd fag in the park, moved, had the 3rd on an abandoned rooftop, he lay down against my leg afterwards as I finished mine off, that was nice
- went to the corner store for some snacks and strolled back down the street so I could get the bus home, found 3 more cigarettes in a pack outside spoons. W. acquired a 4 in 1 vape??? we don't even vape but W. he said we have a symbiotic relationship. W?. . .
- bus was cold and uneventful, the zip hoodie I borrowed from him was warm and reeked of fags
- came home, STOVIES IN THE KITCHEN. W. a crisp cider and a glass of wine. god fucking bless.
- if you got this far I'm almost questioning why you gaf. and also if it was an entertaining read
goodnight!
#yapping tag#sidenote on the symbiote thing. about two hours earlier I'd freaked him out (again) by saying i was thinking the exact thing he was#at the same time. but neither of us had said it out loud and he went “oh that's weird don't do that i hate that” so i said ok#but sadly it just happens a lot so when it did again he just laughed and said that thing about us being symbiotic. it seemed positive#i hope he was thinking of the mutualistic kind#that would ne nice
lewd thoughts on:
ever since gp!sana became the ambassador of graff, she hasn’t had time to fuck dahyun. when she finally cleared all her schedules, dahyun woke up to gp!sana fucking her.
Dahyun didn't just wake up to Sana fucking her. She woke up with Sana's cock down her throat. Sana was thrusting wildly once she saw the younger woman's eyes open. She kept her hands glued to Dahyun's breasts, squeezing the soft mounds she missed so much. Dahyun had to adjust quickly, or she'd soon run out of breath. Sana missed fucking Dahyun so much but knew she had to get her cock nice and wet for the rough fucking she intended.
