Chapter 1: The Train
ID under cut. Click for better detail. Reblogs > Likes
This TTRPG campaign can be watched on Forrest Valkai's YouTube channel and is a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders
ID: A digital drawing of a train car filled with 6 people and a dog. In the back right is Gwen Copperplate, a white woman with brown hair, glasses, a purple vest, and a cool grey shirt. She leans forward, resting her face on her hands, as she looks towards a dog. Opposite her is Dr. Victor Vindeca, a white man with dark brown hair and a green suit. He is looking through a duffel bag. Next to him sits Eloise van der Graff, a yellow tiefling with bright orange hair. She wears white flowing robes which barely cover her. Opposite her sits Ritha Janis, a black person with curly blonde hair, a dark grey stripped suit jacket, a white shirt, a red ascot, and red pants. Between Ritha and Eloise stands a dark grey dog with white feet which looks up at Gwen. Next to Ritha sits Azad, an arab man with brown hair and a curly mustache who is wearing a blue and orange turban, blue robes, and orange clothes underneath that. He wears a lot of jewelry. Across from him sits Kirke Counterfire, a gold dragonborne woman with dark hair who has gauged ears, a red skirt, a red corset, and a brown shirt which has a mix of mesh and opaque materials. End ID

I'm rewatching Charlotte's web the 73 version and I can't help but think Templeton would be a Tumblr sexy man if there was human art of him like how many people loved the oncler like he's greedy and his voice is kinda gruff like how has it not happened
Tumblr media
Oh also he reminds me of JD from the heathers movie specifically and IDK how to describe it

While I was using my computer I looked over at my Singin' in the Rain poster and suddenly got the idea to draw Charlotte from Charlotte's Web as Kathy Selden from Singin' in the Rain since they're both played by Debbie Reynolds.

I read Charlotte’s Web back when I was nine so it was nice to read your thoughts on it. I remember liking it when I read it despite my arachnophobia.
That's another great thing about this book! It helps little kids overcome a fear of spiders if they have one! Because Charlotte is gentle, caring, and brilliant. (She's a total Ravenclaw, let's be honest.) She protects Wilbur, both in terms of trying to save his life and also protecting his innocence and feelings. She doesn't tell him that she's dying until she must, and depending on the version, she elects not to tell him about The Smokehouse either. Charlotte is fascinating because she's clearly been alone for a long time and is now grappling with what it means to have a friend again. A friend who is on a higher rung of the food chain yet clearly has no concept of what that means.
I could gush about this tale until I keel over. Seriously, this story means so damn much to me.

So, I remember watching the animated movie called Charlotte's Web, and I really really fell in love with the sweet friendship between the spider charlotte and the pig wilbur ☺️❤️
I wanted to design Charlotte's Daughters and imagine how they would look like if they were given humanoid traits ❤️💜💛

Can I pretty please get 3 fun facts about Siona?
Of course!
1. Despite having an adoration for everything spooky, Siona has a fear of cavaticas (a centipede like bug with large pinchers!)
2. Siona is deathly ticklish just about everywhere— though her worst spot is her stomach!
3. Her favorite snack is dried Globala rings!

Spidecember day 11
Character: Charlotte A. Cavatica
Series: Charlotte's Web
Species: Barn Spider (Araneus cavaticus)
Anatomical accuracy: Varies
A close miss and a homerun for the same character. Fascinating.
The original novel comes with illustrations. In most of them, Charlotte is portrayed rather simply- but one shows a bit more detail.
Tumblr media
It's a spider, rather generic, but she fits in well with the simple style of all the art. I believe this design was referenced for the 1973 movie adaptation.
Tumblr media
... Why does she have antennae.
'73 Charlotte resembles a sort of spider-insect mix, between the distinct head antennae, and two eyes. At least the legs are in the right spot.
Tumblr media
Honestly she's not the worst spider we've seen. I can appreciate the little hairs on her legs. Which are hard to see in this screenshot.
Moving on so i can ignore Sacrifice's snickering. 2006's Adaptation brought...
Tumblr media
This.
Now that is A. cavaticus. She even has pedipalps!
Barn spiders are on average tan to brown, though they have black or white markings on them. Darker markings are visible on the tips of her leg- you can make one out on some of her back legs.
Tumblr media
Compared to a real specimen, she has some squishy-anthroness around her face, and her eyes don't exactly match perfectly with the real thing, but she works fine. She's quite lovely in motion.
youtube
Both versions of the movie are roughly the same, though the '73 version is a musical. I personally prefer the 2006 one.
Tumblr media
I'm a stickler for anatomy. What can I say.
Now, In all versions of the story- the book, the movies, even the stageplay adaptation (Yes, that exists)- Charlotte dies at the end of the film. The whole story has this theme of death, with Wilbur (the pig) trying to buy more time to run from his. First being the runt, and saved by the daughter of the farmer who owns him (Fern), then later discovering he is to be sold for meat.
Distraught at his fate, this is what causes Charlotte to befriend him. I assume you already know what the plan to save him entails. Words woven into Charlotte's Web, first "Some Pig", then "Terrific", then "Radiant". These webs get Wilbur taken to a county fair, to be judged. While he doesn't earn first prize, a final web stating merely "Humble" makes the judges give a special prize to him as well. Being a prize pig now, he'll never be slaughtered for meat.
With her mission done, Charlotte lays her eggs, and settles down for the end of her life. She is dying, and with her final request, her eggs are taken back to the farm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She is at peace with this, for it is how things go for spiders.
Many spiders only live long enough to mate once, never seeing their offspring hatch. Males die shortly after mating, and females die after laying eggs. There are exceptions, but for the humble barn spider, it is an unshakeable fate.
The next year, her eggs hatch, and all 514 slings balloon away, save for 3. They are named Joy, Aranea, and Nellie. Wilbur cares for them- and their children, though none of them will replace Charlotte.
In both movies, they appear as a smaller version of their mother- though in the sequel made for the 1973 movie, theyre given distinguishing hairstyles.
Tumblr media
Well. At least they have palps now.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I quite like the story, and the 2006 adaptation has presented one of the most accurate spiders so far.
10/10

Is there anything you’d like to talk about but haven’t gotten the chance to yet?
Oh wow. I don't believe anyone's ever asked me that before. I suppose when I get a brainwave to talk about something, I can always just make a post about it myself, or reblog another post with my thoughts, but it doesn't happen that often. I've also got a handful of OCs that I'm developing that I either haven't revealed yet or just haven't talked about much, like my Pokemon OC, Dust. I've also got a handful of #LongPosts that I have outlined but not finished yet, about this or that.
I suppose one story that I'd love to talk about but have never had the chance to, really, is Charlotte's Web. As a fan of all animals and a defender of their lives and rights, it should come as no surprise that I love that story in all incarnations. The original book, the film adaptations, and the stage adaptation that my theatre company wrote for kids. In fact, I've got a whole damn post coming someday about how the real antagonist of that story is classism and how that defines so many of the characters' choices, but also about how taking a stand for what's right can lead to the smallest changes, like sparing Wilbur's life. How showing kindness and being "class blind" like Wilbur can lead to strengthened bonds.
Because Wilbur was raised by Fern who sees no distinction between humans and farm animals. So Wilbur himself sees no distinction between farm animals, and the animals who are considered beneath them, like Templeton and Charlotte. The "vermin." Unlike everyone else, Wilbur is not disgusted by Charlotte. He befriends her, and in doing so, he shows the other barnyard animals how great she is. And in return, Charlotte hatches a plan to save Wilbur's life in return.
In the end, the reality of their class differences catches up to them, as Charlotte's significantly shorter lifespan pulls them apart. But Wilbur's friendship has given her a whole and fulfilling life, and her efforts have saved his life. A runt will see the snow. Not just that, but Wilbur gets to be a Dad to her daughters. Not all of them, but three of them. The same way Charlotte couldn't save every pig ever, but she saved one. The caste system was never going to be totally overthrown in this book, but a runt's life was saved, and a spider was shown love. That's something pretty special.
Wilbur and Charlotte have one of my favorite friendships in all of literature.
