Just some fic recs (part 2)...

It’s been a while since I’ve made a rec list and that seemed tragic to me as I’ve spent most of my quarantine surviving off fic. So here we go! The popular fics are hidden away for today and there is more Wangxian on here than I’d care to admit, but I Hyperfixated. Still, the ships are numerous and various.

Promises We Make -- Mayarene Rose; Wangxian Lan Zhan has taken to visiting the Yiling as often as he can, bringing as many rabbits as he can carry. It is not against the sect rules so there's no reason for him to feel guilty about it. And after all, he made a promise. Or the one where Lan Zhan sneakily moves into the Burial Mounds and this may or may not have helped stop a lot of bad things from happening. **If you’re feeling sad, this is the fic for you. It can take any bad day and make it better. Lan Zhan brings every goddamn rabbit in Cloud Recesses to the Burial Mounds a few rabbits at a time just as an excuse to visit Wei Ying. Then he kind of just stays? And everyone loves him? And Wei Ying is an absolute dumbass about the whole thing? Which tracks.

Screw Poetry, It’s You I Want -- intertwiningsouls; Pynch Adam tries to navigate a crush on his best friend, his first time having a group of friends during the holidays, and the mysterious notes that keep showing up in his locker. **Fair warning this fic is not finished and on hiatus, but I still think it is absolutely worth reading anyway. I reread it often and then get sad it’s not updated, but, you know, fic writer’s lives are hard. I know this deeply. Anyway, it’s soft, it’s cute, and Ronan is perfect.

apastron -- kissmesexybatman; Shatt "This was the mission: three people were set to travel half a year out to the edge of the solar system, traversing space no human eyes had ever seen, to explore the possibility of life in the most extreme of conditions." The first six months of the Kerberos Mission. **This fic is quiet and meditative and a little lonely, but it is so, so beautiful. I loved it the first time I read it and I love it now. There’s some very good ace representation and love just pours from this fic. Love for people and love for space.

How Fragile We Are, Between the Few Good Moments -- nineandthreequarterrs; Wolfstar By the time it’s dark, there’s a fire crackling before them. The tent is set up. There are two chairs propped up by the fire. They have cooked and eaten dinner, and they are sitting in silence. It reminds Sirius of the dinners at home after he got sorted into Gryffindor, or after his mother found the letters from his friends, or lately, whenever he dares to show his face around the house at all. What lives in that space isn’t actually silence. Silence is absence. This thing that hangs between him and his mother, now between him and Remus, is the presence of something suffocating and cutting. It doesn’t serve as a placeholder for noise, it serves as a punishment. It cleaves him to the bone, flays him until he wants to cry. The soft, knotting feeling in his chest he feels when he wants to let tears out but can’t is rising in him. Sirius doesn’t know how to kill except to hiss, “Well if you’re mad at me just fucking say so.” **This takes the moment where Sirius lures Snape to the Shrieking Shack and nearly gets him killed by Remus in his werewolf form-a scene that should be utilized like this more frequently-and creates something absolutely lovely with it. The fic is quiet and subtle and deals with the abuse Sirius suffers and Remus’ rightful anger in a delicate and true way. I adore it.

Likewise Variable -- ssstrychnine; Wolfstar James has plans, Peter is the nurse, Sirius keeps fake blood up his sleeves, and Remus just tries to stay alive. **One of those classic Marauders fics where everyone is batshit crazy except Remus, who ends up doing batshit crazy things because he loves his friends. And Sirius. Especially Sirius. He ends up playing Romeo and Sirius plays Juliet and the pining and angst is unreal. A trope I’m trash for and very well executed.

flowers boldly blossoming over withered grass -- LilyMaxwell; Wangxian It’s in the dawning years after Jin Guangyao’s death that Wei Wuxian learns what it’s like to live and love without a second thought. **The first fic I found in my endless search through pages and pages on ao3 where I saw a characterization of Lan Zhan that resonated with me in the same way he did in the show. I have a thing for soft and quiet fics and this one is no exception. Lovely and beautifully written. 

Like Knives -- All_My_Characters_Are_Dead; Bakushima Bakugou was disappointed in him. Bakugou thought he was weak, thought he was useless. Bakugou knew he’d broken, and Bakugou was mad at him for it. **I love this fic a lot. It takes Bakugou’s anger and uses it to full angst advantage. Kirishima overhears Bakugou and misinterprets Bakugou’s intense worry for anger. And then emotions happen.

Garden War -- Cibee; Drarry Harry and Draco are quarantined in their houses, a lake across from one another. What better ways to spend this time than to annoy each other with letters and attempts to prove that their garden is better? **I did my best to avoid quarantine fics, but you know, easier said than done. This one is super cute. Mostly epistolary, Harry and Draco just make fun of each other and garden and then get together. Like, what the hell else do you want?

light fires at night (to push back the void) -- inthesea; Andreil The first time Andrew realizes he wants to hear the words, Neil isn’t even doing anything. He’s just sitting there, staring at the horizon with that stupidly dramatic faraway expression of his, and letting the cigarette burn down between his fingers all the way to the filter — an outrageous waste of good nicotine, if you asked Andrew. (Or: 20+ times Andrew and Neil say I love you, and one time they say it out loud.) **One of the two truly popular fics that shows up on here. This fic changed my life. It killed me and then brought me back to life. It’s essentially a series of vignettes starring Andrew and Neil and like...it hurts and it heals and it loves. I would die for this fic to continue existing even when I don’t.

the hidden source is the watchful heart -- sombregods; Wangxian Wei Wuxian comes back to the Cloud Recesses for the winter months. He and Lan Wangji learn that emotional intimacy and physical intimacy are not (yet) quite synonymous.They have time to figure it out. **I have the biggest soft spot for relationships where sex and romance aren’t intrinsically intertwined and take some time to navigate. And in my mind, Lan Zhan and Wei Ying have exactly that kind of relationship, so this fic was all I ever needed. If that’s your thing, this is a must read.

A Heart’s a Heavy Burden -- idratherhaveyou; Wangxian There was fire and magic and death, screams and blood, but rage was Wei Ying's song at night, the beast he became taking control, protecting what it could and destroying those that did harm.Years ago, when Wei Ying had newly discovered this particular power of his, when he’d picked his side—to simply fight everyone who didn’t fight for those weaker than themselves—he’d remembered more.To him, this was better. Better to forget things best forgot. **A Howl’s Moving Castle AU **A shameless self-promotion, but I love this fic to pieces, so I thought it seemed fit to add. Not quite finished, but I promise it will be. I just take two of my favorite pieces of media and have a real good time. There’s magic, Lan Zhan and Wei Ying love each other a lot, and A-Yuan does god’s work.

Siren Song -- Becky_J_1022 When Damen is cursed by a Siren in exchange for the revenge his heart desperately desires, his life is thrown into chaos, and betrayal lurks around every corner. Despite his better judgment, he allows a beautiful young man to seek berth on his ship, not knowing that he has granted refuge to the one man who has every reason to want him dead. Laurent may be the key to breaking Damen's curse, and Damen could help restore Laurent to his throne—but if they have any hope of helping each other, they will have to untangle their bitter pasts first. **Listen, man, this fic is balls to the walls fun and also everyone should read Becky’s fics. Not enough people do. She makes sentences beautiful. Just so beautiful. And she loves to and you can tell.

Well, I’ve never written as much as I did last year in all my life; it was such a good year! I think I gained a little more self-confidence in my writing abilities.  

1) Nunc est bibendum - Wolfstar, M, 5k, First-war Era, Canon Compliant. 

Featuring a Sphinx, a riddle about reading and graveyard sex. Still can’t believe I wrote something so bizarre and out of my comfort zone. Maybe the fact that I wrote it in 5 days while I was bedridden says something about it?

“Soon he was pushed against the mausoleum's wall, back arching, legs trembling, skin alight. For a split second, his traitorous mind, never quiet, remembered the Sphinx's mocking words about being used by a cruel man, and he half wished to shove Sirius away, and half longed to cry out: please, use me all you want. Every thought was wiped out of his head. Mindless, he was - for a moment - happy.”

2) Midday, Midnight - Wolfstar, T, 8,5k, set during the summer of 1976, between fifth and sixth year at Hogwarts (and after The Prank).

Ironic, that the best thing I’ve written (probably the best I’ll ever write) is a Marauder Era summer romance, since I usually prefer to focus on R/S as adults and I’m fonder of wintry/autumnal atmospheres. This is R/S in their “the age of innocence”.

“Remus lifted his head and a big black dog appeared, strolling through the crunching yellow grass. It was ironic or it was heatstroke, or Ovid was right about supernatural encounters at noon, or it was the Grim coming to relieve him of his mundane worries – or Sirius was actually there.

Remus blinked. Still there. An unconditioned reflex spurred him to his feet as the dog – no, Padfoot – was running towards him, one, two, three strides, one, two, three heartbeats and then a drooling tongue was licking his palms, a wagging tail greeting him happily.

He was struck, like church-bells were tolling inside his brain, dinging Sirius Sirius Sirius.”

3) What became of the dreams we had - Wolfstar, M, 8k, set during Goblet of Fire: Sirius is hiding in Hogsmeade but he visits Remus for Christmas.

I knew this wasn’t going to be a crowd-pleaser but. Who. Cares. Honesty counts more. 

“The real reason he never sailed the boat in all those years, it occurs to him without real surprise, is that it would have pained him too much. 

Without his parents and without Sirius, this boat is nothing but a heap of old rotten wood cobbled together, reeking of silence, of things lost and broken and abandoned during the crushing course of time. It came alive when Padfoot climbed on board before and it will fade away again as soon as he disembarks – Remus isn’t even sure if it’s a metaphor for himself, too, as pathetic as it is. 

What he is sure of, the only fixed point in the time and space continuum of his and Sirius’ relationship, embedded in his bone marrow, is that he wants to clutch as close as he can all Sirius’ cutting questions, his scathing remarks, his volatile moods, his impetuous moments of fondness. If he can’t have happiness, he’ll take this instead.”

4) The light that blinds my eyes - Wolfstar, T, 6k, No Voldemort AU, post-Hogwarts.

I had so much fun writing this rom-com! Lots of pining, demi Sirius and Remus who’s very oblivious. And it’s my first (and for now, my only) chaptered fic. 

“After, they step outside to smoke, sitting on the single stone step that divides the cottage from the garden. Sirius puts two cigarettes in his mouth and lights them both, pinching one between his fingers only to place it directly between Remus’ parted lips, a rather affectionate gesture, but not odd. 

Sirius has always been warm with him – he really is sweet, Remus thinks, looking at him sideways blowing a puff of smoke, his classical profile turned upwards to the starry sky. Any girl or boy would be lucky to love him, he almost wants to say, referring to yesterday’s conversation, but he’s too afraid of striking a nerve.

They smoke in silence for a while, gazing at the dark garden ahead, little shapes of glowing Fairies twinkling here and there in between the shrubs. It’s Sirius who breaks the silence first, as usual.

“So can I ask one more question before you tell me to sod off.”

5) When we finally kiss goodnight - Wolfstar, T, 2,2k, First War era, set during Christmas.

I love RS Small Gifts so much and I love Christmas as well!

“Silence falls upon them like a soft blanket, an intimate space that only belongs to themselves. Remus goes to the loo, brushes his teeth and when he steps into the guestroom, Sirius is already sitting under the covers, the lampshade casting a warm, soft glow. How would it be, thinks Remus, to come home to this. And then, don’t be fucking stupid.”

Okay but in wolfstar fics I feel like people get their coming out wrong

The marauders grew up in a less understanding time. James and peter wouldn’t just be like “lol whatever”

Remus would be first to come out (pan, gay, bi, etc.). They already accepted him as a werewolf, so he would have a bit more courage. Sirius, who grew up in a less loving household, would be scared shitless.

When Remus came out Peter would be soooo uncomfortable (a little bigoted and very disturbed), but he would have no clue what to do. So, he would look to James.

James would be silent then ask questions, which then would probably be ‘open minded’ but now be terrible. He would ask how it was possible, ask if he had ever looked at any of the others in a sexual way, ask if he had sex, if he hadn’t if he was sure he was gay, it would continue like that for a while. Once James was satisfied (which would take HOURS, in which Sirius would stay extremely quiet and Peter would look mad during(adding a few questions of his own)) James would end the conversation with the classic “as long as you never like me we’re good.”

But it wouldn’t be good.

Suddenly Peter and James wouldn’t change in front of Remus, they would look sick when they saw Remus talking to a guy who wasn’t in their group, and they avoided him as much as possible.

This went on for a month or so.

Sirius the only one treating him the same.

It ends when Remus breaks down crying one night, to Lily of all people. And Lily being an amazing person (and possibly bi/pan) gets pissed. She rounds up the other three and screams at them until her voice is raw, telling them how they hurt Remus.

After that night James is back to normal and even tears up apologizing to Remus. Because while James was raised in a different time he’s a bro™ and would get over it and even come to love it once everything set it. Peter would take another week or two but, as always, would follow James’ lead.

Sirius would be too scared from James’ and peter’s reaction to come out willingly for at least a few months, maybe a year.

Remus finds out, he accidentally stumbles upon a nude magazine of men that he knows isn’t his. He confronts Sirius who denies it and cries but Remus just says he’ll love Sirius no matter what. After a minute Sirius says it out loud and it’s a big relief.

Remus doesn’t make Sirius come out to the others because he knows how hard it is. It isn’t until a bad full moon that Sirius comes out. Kind of.

Remus is unconscious and bloody and they don’t know if he’ll make it. Sirius is over him, clutching him tightly, mumbling about how Remus can’t leave him, saying how much he loves him. James and Peter whiteness the entire thing but say nothing.

Weeks later Remus is better and Peter is acting weird and detached again, this time only staying close to James.

One time when James and Sirius are alone he asks him how long he had been in love with Remus, then how long he had known he was gay. He apologizes for how he had talked about Remus when the werewolf had first come out, then he cries a little and apologizes for if he made Sirius upset or scared to come out. They cry together and fall asleep on the common room couch hugging.

Sirius officially comes out as gay to the marauders two days later.

They all nod knowingly and there’s a flicker of hope in Remus’ eyes that only James catches. This is when he becomes the ultimate wolfstar shipper and makes multiple plans to get them together. He executes them with the help of Peter (who starts acting supportive eventually) and Lily.

All three are upset when a year into their plans they figure out that Remus and Sirius had been together for half of that time. They 100% find out by waking in on the two making out/banging.

It’s seeing James go from bigot to the biggest gay shipper ever that makes lily realize she could maybe love him, or at lest give him a chance.

The point is: MAKE JAMES AND PETER WORK TO COME TO UNDERSTAND OTHER SEXUALITIES, STOP PRETENDING PEOPLE WERE AUTOMATICALLY WOKE THIRTY YEARS AGO

I’m not ready to be a father. Although we would make the most beautiful babies...” Sirius surveys him intently, as if trying to mentally merge their features. Remus shakes his head. “What exactly is my role in this bit you’re doing?” “What bit?” With his most Padfoot-esque head tilt, he looks genuinely confused. Remus’s cast-iron certainty that he’s joking dwindles with every second. Who knows what absolute rubbish Walburga and Orion told him about how babies are made? Is there a chance he genuinely believes same-sex couples can’t procreate because they couldn’t legally marry until recently? “Oh Moony, your face!” Doubled over with giggles, Sirius falls against his chest. “Come here.”

um. there's not much time for eating and also the food would just get soggy...

there is the... um... thing sirius is eating here.... "The rest of the praise he does without words, each lick savouring, each suck worshipping, each swallow treasuring."

💖 What is your favorite moment in this WIP?

Oh it's so hard to pick! Either the part where they're babies (eighteen), and they've just realised their feelings, OR when they're old men (thirty-five) and Sirius is trying to initiate a much needed hate-fuck, but Remus is being annoyingly rational and pleasant about it.

🔎 Is there a phrase/word you know you use too often? Will you change it in editing?

I'm always going on about gazes and glances and intent looks, and I will cut some out if I notice while editing. Otherwise, they're here to stay. This fic in particular is going to have a lot of gasping and sobbing and trembling, but there's simply nothing I can do about that.

🍖 How many fictional people were harmed in the making of this WIP?

I don't know?? Because I'm not taking responsibility for any of their canon events, so all I've done is make them kiss and let them cry about it. The ken dolls should be thanking me, really.

oh god. um. at least three people I know in real life know about my ao3 account. one of them being my older brother. because up until now it's been cute little fairytales and pirates and masquerade contests... but the reason they know is because I believe in being open and unashamed about this sort of thing... so... here's hoping they've all forgotten my username!

🐁 Name three reasons why this WIP is horrible at being smut.

It's written by someone with limited interest in sex as a physical act and absolutely zero spacial reasoning skills.

It's far too soggy. The characters routinely have to pause what they're doing because one of them is crying. All of the climaxes are just them finally releasing a pent-up sob.

A tiny hint of a Plot and also some Themes and far too much Banter crept its way in.

🌈 If at the beginning of your WIP the characters knew about the end, would they kill you to stop you from writing it?

Hmmmm... I think Remus might, a gut-reaction of sheer embarrassment. Sirius would be a bit shell-shocked, like "sorry I have to go through WHAT?" but I do think he'd accept it knowing there was a happy ending. And that he got to have sex with Remus AT LEAST six times!! That's Big News for eighteen-year-old Sirius.

❌ What would your WIP get cancelled on Twitter for?

OH BOY, definitely for toxic communication issues and less than healthy bdsm practices. And someone would absolutely have the take that "having sex with someone while they're crying is always non-con, even if they beg you to continue."
