No. 1 Cal Sweeps No. 9 Stanford At Big Row
Cal Retains Schwabacher Cup
REDWOOD CITY – The No. 1 California men's rowing team had a successful outing at the Big Row against No. 9 Stanford, taking both the varsity and second varsity eight races at Redwood Shores on Saturday and retaining the Schwabacher Cup. The Golden Bears have now won nine straight matchups against the Cardinal and extended their series lead to 70-19. Both crews remain undefeated this season heading into the Pac-12 Championships in two weeks. In the varsity eight race, Cal was able to build an open-water lead of about two seats by the 1,000-meter mark. Stanford was able to keep the distance over the next 500 meters, before the Bears made a push to extend their lead to a few seats of open water to win by five seconds in a time of 5:31.7. In the second varsity eight race, the Bears got off to a great start and built a three-seat lead in the opening 500 meters before extending it to open water by the halfway mark. Cal continued to extend its lead through the sprint and won in convincing fashion, almost 25 seconds ahead of the Cardinal, with a time of 5:41.2. "I thought both crews raced really well," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "I wanted today to be an internal, positive-momentum-building kind of race and I think there was that for both crews. The second varsity got off to a really good start and got out early and just extended the lead through the rest of the race course, so I was pleased with how they performed. The varsity had a really good race. Stanford stuck with them through the middle, but we were able to win by a second or so of open water. So good results and execution of the race for the guys. Now we have two weeks to build towards the Pac-12 Championships." Results V8+ 1. Cal - 5:31.7 2. Stanford - 5:36.0 2V8+ 1. Cal - 5:41.2 2. The Albatross
Sometimes for sport the men of loafing crews Snare the great albatrosses of the deep, The indolent companions of their cruise As through the bitter vastitudes they sweep.
Scarce have they fished aboard these airy kings When helpless on such unaccustomed floors, They piteously droop their huge white wings And trail them at their sides like drifting oars.
How comical, how ugly, and how meek Appears this soarer of celestial snows! One, with his pipe, teases the golden beak, One, limping, mocks the cripple as he goes.
The Poet, like this monarch of the clouds, Despising archers, rides the storm elate. But, stranded on the earth to jeering crowds, The great wings of the giant baulk his gait.
Charles Baudelaire - The Albatross

Alwyn Wolfaardt of the neo-Nazi "Afrikaner Resistance Movement" (AWB) begging for his life and the lives of two other AWB members shortly before they were shot by a police constable on March 10th, 1994. During the 1994 Bophuthatswana crisis between the South African government and the Government of Bophuthatswana Bantustan, the self-proclaimed AWB "Colonel" Wolfaardt, "Field Cornet" Jacobus Uys, and "General" Nicolaas Fourie participated in an AWB convoy that was driving around and shooting at roadside houses of black citizens. Constables of the Bophuthatswana Defense Force stopped their car by shooting Fourie and Wolfaardt in the neck and arm. Uys was also shot in the leg. Though Wolfaardt was quickly disarmed by the police, a constable named Ontlametse Bernstein Menyatose approached them and asked if they really were with the AWB. When Wolfaardt confirmed that they were, Menyatose raised his rifle and he executed all three of them at point-blank range despite Wolfaardt's pleas. Menyatose shouted: "Who do you think you are? What are you doing in my country?" as he shot them. He claimed that he did this because his emotions ran high after he saw a mother who had been wounded by AWB gunfire. The killing of Wolfaardt, Uys and Fourie was witnessed by more than a dozen international journalists and Menyatsoe immediately applied for amnesty from the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Though the application was opposed by the families of the three dead AWB men, and despite AWB leader Eugene Terre'Blanche pointing out that the men were all unarmed and were not a threat at the time of their deaths, Menyatsoe's application was accepted by the TRC and he was never charged with any crimes relating to this event. The 1994 Bophuthatswana crisis later ended with the region being incorporated into South Africa and the subsequent restoration of order by the South African Defense Force. Kevin Carter, the photojournalist who captured this image, took his own life just four months later on July 27th, 1994. This event along with many horrifying sights which he photographed during the famine in Sudan a year prior are believed to have contributed to his suicide. https://www.instagram.com/p/CiujLu7Dfb16GCPPFLQ5F-8KUKUeFspE8EiRkc0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Honey and Buzzing at Bee Things in Swellendam (2019-09-27)
If you are rather fond of honey and happen to ‘bee’ in Swellendam, then it might just be worth your while to buzz across the main street to the brightly hued, honeybee-themed, hard to miss Bee Things shop.
As it stands, Bee Things is part of the Ubusi Beekeeping company which rose out of founder Jaco Wolfaardt’s beekeeping hobby that first morphed into JW’s Beekeeping Honey & Equipment,…

Cal Men’s Rowing Wins National Championship
Bears Varsity Eight Caps Undefeated Season With 18th IRA Title
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The varsity eight entered Sunday's Grand Final with an undefeated record this spring, and with 1,000 meters to go at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship, the Cal men's rowing team's hard work was showing signs of a hard-fought victory. With the win, the Bears secured the program's 18th national championship and 100th national title overall for Cal Athletics. The Varsity Challenge Cup was not the only hardware Cal took home. The Bears' second varsity eight won silver in the Kennedy Cup in a thrilling comeback.  "Really proud of how the guys raced today," said head coach Scott Frandsen. "A full team effort leading to the varsity being able to really have their best race of the year and represent the team and win. They executed their race perfectly, really happy for those nine guys and the full 60 guys on the team. This has been the goal all year and the guys did it." Like it did all season, the V8+ got off to a fast start. The top four boats of Cal, Yale, Washington, and Brown separated themselves from the remainder of the field in the first 100 meters. By the 500-meter mark, the Bears had a two-seat advantage on the Bulldogs. By the 1,000-meter mark, the Bears and Bulldogs pulled away from the rest of the field, with Cal extending its lead over Yale. The Bears' championship boat, led by Pac-12 Male Athlete of the Year Ollie Maclean, Newcomer of the Year Gennaro di Mauro as well as all-conference honorees Elliott Kemp, Angus Dawson, and Campbell Crouch, defeated a Yale boat that featured three Olympians by over two seconds, finishing with a time of 5:44.239. Cal took home their 18th Varsity Challenge Cup in a long and storied history stretching back nearly a century. The Golden Bears also won national championships in 1928, '32, '34, '35, '39, '49, '60, '61, '64, '76, '99, '00, '01, '02, '06,'10 and ‘16.  It is also believed to be the first undefeated season for the V8+ since 2001 when Frandsen was in the boat for the Bears. In the battle for the Stewards Cup, Yale, Harvard, and Washington took the early lead. The Bears began their move over the final 1,000 meters to try to chase down Dartmouth and Washington for a place on the podium but ran out of race track to take fifth with a time of 6:11.513. In the final for the Kennedy Cup, the 2V8+ was tremendous. The Bears opened the race in the lead pack but sat in fifth behind leaders Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and Washington. At the 1,000-meter mark, Cal began its charge, moving into third and closing fast. Over the final 100 meters, the Bears took control of second and held off Dartmouth, capturing silver by over three seconds with a time of 5:54.052.

Maiden Satellite Classic win for Van Heerden
Steven van Heerden won the Bestmed Satellite Classic cycling road race for the first time as he outsprinted his rivals in the 110km event near Hartbeespoort Dam in North West Province today.
The 25-year-old BCX rider, from Kempton Park in Johannesburg, held on in the final surge for the line to win in a time of 2:35:18. He was followed home by Jayde Julius (ProTouch) and Dylan Girdlestone (OfficeGuru).
Van Heerden was part of the four-man BCX outfit contesting the race, which included defending champion Nolan Hoffman, Chris Jooste and Brandon Downes.
After several near misses, he said he was thrilled to win his maiden Satellite title, as well as being pleased with his conditioning at this stage of the season.
“I’ve had a few years of bad luck in this race and it was great to be able to turn it around this time,” he said.
“We are now looking ahead to the Amashova [in Durban] next weekend and it’s nice to know the speed is there after putting in some hard work.
“Besides next week’s race, we are preparing for the SA track championships and the continental track champs early next year.”
He said the team had worked well together to set up his drive for the line, with Hoffman and Jooste part of an early breakaway before being caught by the peloton at the start of the Hekpoort climb, which comes in the latter stages of the race.
“There was quite a fast start and a lot of moves before it all came back together in the early part of the race,” said Van Heerden, who won the trapNET 360 100km event in July.
“Then Nolan and Chris were part of a breakaway group at about the 30km mark. I missed that move, but the bunch kept up the pace and we closed in at Hekpoort when they had a lead of just over a minute.”
He said a group of eight riders, including himself and Downes, then got away when ProTouch led an attack.
“We drove it quite hard to the top of Hekpoort and then we just carried on from there.”
With about a kilometre to go, Girdlestone made a move, but Van Heerden said he was able to stay with him.
“Brandon had set me up nicely and when Dylan attacked, I went with him and managed to get ahead. Jayde chased hard in the final stretch, but I was able to hang on for the win.”
The honours in the women’s race went to Cycle Nation’s Joanna van de Winkel, who showed her climbing ability up Hekpoort and then maintained her gap to the finish.
She crossed the line in 3:11:24, ahead of defending champion Carla Oberholzer (Demacon) and Clover rider Zanri Rossouw.
The 36-year-old Van de Winkel, from Northcliff in Johannesburg, only returned to serious racing this year after taking four years off to raise her family. She has two children and holds down a fulltime job at First National Bank.
However, she did ride in the Satellite Classic last year, when she also led at the top of Hekpoort, but was caught just before the final sprint to finish in second place.
This time she was part of a group which broke away from the main bunch after the 70km mark, including Oberholzer, Rossouw, Desray Neale Sebregts and Azulde Britz.
“When we came to Hekpoort I basically just rode my own pace and when I looked back at the top there was nobody on my wheel,” said Van de Winkel.
“This was the same as last year, but this time I was able to keep the gap and it was really good to take the win.”

Taking me MILES to England
Having searched for my Irish roots for so long, I had not ever thought that the journey might take me to another place. That I perhaps had ancestors from England. But having discovered my MILES great great grandmother, Jane MILES, born in Willowmore, Eastern Cape, South Africa, in 1877, I was now close to finding my great great great grandparents. I had no idea when or where they originated from, but the genealogist in me was super excited to add another line to our tree, and welcome them to the family.
Once again turning to the extremely helpful website of the Latter Day Saints, famliysearch.org, I found the baptism of Jane MILES. She may have been born on the 3rd October 1877 in Willowmore, but her baptism took place in the English Church (Church of the Province of South Africa) in George nearby, on the 25th October 1877, giving her parents as Thomas (a tailor) and Eliza MILES.
Tumblr media
Using these parents names I was able to find all their children, 7 in total, with Jane’s sister, Clara, being the eldest, born in 1876, and the youngest, born in 1885. There was even a set of twin girls, with one sadly passing away at only a few weeks old. Life was tough in those days, with little to no medical help for simple illnesses like influenza, measles, whooping cough, meaning that many young children died before they even had much chance of a substantial life.
Searching for a marriage in South Africa for Thomas and Eliza MILES, but finding nothing, I thought that they may have travelled to South Africa as a newly married couple. Then I got lucky and found them on a passenger record. This time thanks to the Genealogical Society of South Africa, who have transcribed many ships passenger records of people arriving to live and settle in South Africa during the 19th century. See below for the transcription of my great great great grandparents journey to settle in South Africa in 1875, as a married couple.
MILES, Thomas Occupation: Tailor with wife, 14th October 1875 Surety details: for Mr Blyth, George Town Port of arrival: Cape Town Extra info: . Total number of passengers: 2 Sent out under Govt Notice No 325 of 1874 Arrived 13 October 1875 aboard the Danube Ship Notes: List of aided Emigrants per Danube arrived 13th October 1875 Source: Western Cape Archives, PWD 2-753, page 29 transcribed by: Richard Wolfaardt, from photographs taken by Alta Griffiths.
Seeing that they arrived married, I presumed they travelled from England and so my search moved to another continent. Using ancestry.co.uk I found their marriage in the parish of St John, Limehouse Fields, Tower Hamlets, London, England on the 11th April 1875, only a few months before leaving for South Africa. Thomas being 32 years old and Eliza 26, the marriage certificate also listed their father’s names and occupations, but the handwriting left a lot to the imagination.
Tumblr media
Having traced their origins I could only wonder what had encouraged them to pack up their life in England in 1875 and move to a strange, unknown country to start a family. The answer might be in the small note on the passenger record - “Sent out under Govt Notice No 325 of 1874”. That would have to be a separate investigation, just what was Notice No 325 of 1874? And what promises did it make? Did it pay their passage? My presumption was that it was a Notice created to fill the colony in South Africa with trades people like Thomas who was a tailor. And so every answer brought with it so many more questions. Each branch added to our tree was sprouting many leaves, and our MILES family had certainly travelled miles in the hope of a fresh new life. And so I end this post with the words of Michael Crichton  -
“If you don’t know your history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree”.
