I'm the anon who's been reading ur SWaK fic! Thank you for answering the qi deviation question. it's making me see mdzs in a whole new light. I recently saw a post (askSythe on here) about the significance of the blood pool and how throwing bodies in there removes them from the reincarnation cycle and that's what the clans did to the Wen Remnants and JC is rumored to have led this siege and my heart HURTS. continuing this in next ask -

As for the post you are referencing, I had not come across this until you mentioned it in your ask and have since went in search of it in order to reply. From what I can gather from the notes, it seems to have garnered a lot of controversy and subsequent backlash against the person who posted it originally.

I don't want to criticise other people's posts (especially when they have already received so much negativity from it), but with all due respect, I don't feel this was MXTXs intention with the blood pool. There's no mention of it in any version I have and I've also had my friend check the entire original novel for the phrase '永不超生', which is quoted in the original post, and we can't locate that in the Chinese text either. Regardless of that, I don't feel such a claim fits with the rest of the novel.

I could be completely wrong, as it's not something I've really thought about, nor do I have the cultural knowledge of the specific concept the original post is referring to. But, if the Wen remnants were forever barred from reincarnating due to their corpses being thrown into and essentially trapped in an apparent 'unbreakable prison' (which they managed to escape), why would WWX set an array around the blood pool to stop corpses escaping when he lived there back in his first life? 🤔 How were all the corpses able to crawl out and run amok the minute a rampaging WN broke the seal around the pool? It just doesn't make much sense to do that if the fierce corpses residing within are already trapped there.

There's also the fact WWX uses the blood pool as well. Which makes me question this theory even more so. It goes against WWX's character and ethics to stop souls from reincarnating, when his very cultivation method involves empathy and 'spending' resentment so the entities can move on. Granted, WWX used the blood pool to nurture corpses resentment so he was able to harness it and direct it where required - in this case, I think it's most likely to replenish those guarding the base of the burial mounds and keeping the Wen remnants safe. In theory, the corpses residing there would eventually use up their resentment and their souls would move on. Hence the need for a supply of new fierce corpses he can utilise - which he helps move on in turn. I really don't think WWX would do such a thing if the blood pool was anything other than a collection of water that held strong resentment due to being contaminated by the many corpses already present in its depths. If anything, it's a similar situation to when he found the sword in the Xuanwu of Slaughter's stomach, which had been practically marinating in all the resentment of the beast's past victims.

Obviously the Wen remnants were unable to move on after being mercilessly slaughtered, but that is simply because they were denied a proper burial and unjustly murdered in what was a most violent, unprovoked attack. Once the blood corpses had spent their lingering resentment, saving the very people who had killed them and the man who tried so hard to protect them, they finally moved on and turned to ash - which WN promptly collected to ensure they could finally be put to rest respectfully, as they should have been long ago. I see no indication that they would not move on because they were left in the blood pool specifically.

Of course, the way the cultivators involved in the siege not only murdered innocent people, but then treated their victims corpses with such disgusting disrespect is utterly appalling. Even though there is no evidence that the blood pool acted as a type of supernatural prison of sorts, it does not subtract from what the cultivators did. They still made sure the Wen remnants could not rest in peace by their heartless actions regardless.

As for JCs involvement in the siege, it's not actually a rumour that he led the siege, he most certainly, unequivocally did. It's actually outright stated a few times in the novel. Even when WN mentioned as such, WWX did not correct him on that specific accusation. Later still JGY also mentions JCs involvement, right in front of the man in question no less, with no argument to the contrary. Finally, MXTX has also spoken about JCs involvement in leading the siege and confirmed he had indeed formulated a plan based on WWX's weaknesses, as the text suggests. He was very much the driving force of the whole thing, despite knowing the Wen remnants consisted of innocent people who were either weak, old, or a toddler. He is responsible for many people being brutally murdered and shows no remorse for it either - which speaks volumes about his character.

in general xiang shu/chen xing as a cp is so... sigh their dynamics, the way they banter and argue and get to know each other and eventually fall in love, ughhh the secret that chen xing kept abt his lifespan, how he was holding back from falling in love bc he couldn't just leave xiang shu behind, how xiang shu so desperately tried to keep chen xing alive, the i love you that's said in between the lines but never aloud, the moonshell bracelets... THE SLEDDING............ im so sad i love them shuxing invented love

the fact that this wn is literally one of those isekai style regression plot that goes "when chen xing woke up, he found himself 3 years before his death, on the journey to save the world... can he gather his companions and save all those he cared about? can he finally be lovey dovey with his martial god protector??" except it spends 2/3 of the story injecting the readers with Pain of the first cycle before the second cycle comes...

somewhere around the first half i was like, so this is what romantic joongdok is like huh. bc they rly gave that sort of vibe. the mc who puts the world above himself, who keeps running around? disappearing? and whenever he disappears it puts the ml in a frenzy lmao. and the ml, taciturn and tsundere but cares abt the mc beyond what words can describe. chen xing will light up the whole world with the heart lamp but chen xing himself is the light of xiang shu's world /crying

oh man the chars... tuoba yan my sweet eternal 2ml... xiao shan, shuxing's adopted son... xie an who i was rly sus abt but he lowkey became one of the best n most reliable team member, we stan an actual functioning adult... feng qianjun who rly impressed me when he chose gu qing over princess qinghe... everyone is so good!! characterized so well!!

i like that the main story basically ended w the implication that shuxing r undergoing their three-month long honeymoon in the middle of the wilderness which they will spend to bone for every. single. day.

In fact, when JC tells WWX that he can't protect him if he defends the Wen Remnants, WWX flat out /rejects/ him. (So what are you crying to JC for?) WWX believes he can protect them himself. And he does. For almost a couple of years.

WWX rejects because JC way of 'help' was burning WN and giving away elders and a 2 years old baby back to a forced work camp:

JC is what he is, i don't understand why people want to make him the poor misunderstooding protagonist.

If WWX is the rightous protagonist and JC is an classicist antaghonist, and thats it, theres no need to make him a poor thing

Okay. Here's to the antis crying that Jiang Cheng should have done more for the Wen Remnants.

Just no. WWX had already proclaimed himself an enemy when he intruded upon a conference at Koi Tower to threaten that he'd kill whoever dared to stop him from rescuing the Remnants. Anyone, especially YMJ would be committing political and literal suicide by aiding with WWX.

YMJ would not have been able to survive that. They had just survived a mass massacre and a long war. In a climate made on hierarchy, JC is in his young 20s. He has no allies.

His current Sect is made of a thrown together a collection of rouge cultivators and fresh disciples he had to train in less than a few months right after he survived watching his Sect burn, being tortured, and losing his core. Then, WWX was gone.

Still, JC went to war. To avenge his family, his people, his land, and to protect them from a tyrant. With WRH down, now JGS is the next. And we see the direct and very public pressure JGS puts on JC to distance from WWX.

Just because 'JC is a Sect Leader' doesn't mean he has more influence than JGS and the elders of the Jin Sect. Maybe the Lan's would have had that respect, but they had their own issues to resolve and their own alliances to maintain.

Speaking of which, YMJ needed their alliance with the Jin's. Only then would JC have more sway. As allies, there would be less incentive to destroy YMJ. There would also be public scrutiny cast on the Jin's should they openly damage their alliance with YMJ. Scrutiny that JGS and JGY do not want when they are conducting nefarious schemes to gain control (see Xue Yang in his extra with JGY).

With JC actively working to make peace with the Jin's, in addition to having JZX engaged to JYL, JC is able to take the attention and pressure off WWX and the Wen Remnants. The people don't want to focus on the threat that WWX is to their lives, their culture, and their loved ones (if they get raised from death and cut off from the circle of reincarnation). They talk about the grand wedding hosted between the Jin's & Jiang's. They talk about the birth of JL and his celebrations.

In fact, when JC tells WWX that he can't protect him if he defends the Wen Remnants, WWX flat out /rejects/ him. (So what are you crying to JC for?) WWX believes he can protect them himself. And he does. For almost a couple of years.

When does it go wrong? When WWX leaves BM and is on his way to attend JL's celebration.Jin Zixun ambushes & scapegoats him (endorsed by JGS!) WWX loses control of WN and WN murders Jin Zixuan.

JZX, who was the one to invite WWX despite knowing the opposition it would bring to him and DID cause.

Even in the ridiculous situation of JC housing the Remnants in LP (nvm his and his people's trauma of the Wen's), the Jin's scheming to murder would have happened to WWX regardless of where he was with the Remnants.

It's f*cked up. But does JC have control over JGS and JGY? No. So stop blaming JC for their downfall. It was on WWX to protect the Wen's and to control WN, no one else.

(Note, if JZX, his firstborn son and Sect Heir, could not persuade JGS and his clan to back off from WWX, what makes you think JC could?)

Afterwards, WN and WQ both decide on their own that in order to answer for the deaths at Qiongqi Path and JZX's murder, that they comply to the Jin's demand. They go voluntarily.

They tell WWX that they are grateful to him for the extra year of life and peace he gave them.

They leave with no regrets.

Again, I must ask you, why blame JC for their deaths?

JC knew that their ruin would eventually occur and tried to warn WWX. JC tried to stop it from happening by killing WN when he was uncontrollable and unpredictable, when WN had no conscience. But JC doesn't kill him. Bc WWX told him not to.

(WN nearly breaks out of BM but luckily LWJ happened to be there to help WWX subdue him and somehow restore his conscience, which WWX never knew would happen. So JC's concerns were not unwarranted.)

Forget and ignore at your convenience, but JC DOES speak up for WWX's actions and reasons for defending the Wen Remnants. No one else does. (Again, see my previous thread.) At the Pledge Conference, where the Sects are deciding what to do about WWX after JZX's death at Nightless City, it would not be hard to assume JC would try to not have them execute WWX. In the end we don't know, but we can say that he was unhappy with their decision to hunt down WWX for good.

But JC is only human. He could only protect WWX, and when WWX rejected his help, he could not do much else. He could only delay the inevitable.

He could not have protected the Wen Remnants even if he wanted to. Just like how WWX wanted to save them, but couldn't in the world that they live in where an eye for an eye is never enough, and the consequences of their actions never die no matter what their intentions are.

You awoke with a start, gasping as you found yourself back in your bed, heart racing and sweat beading down your forehead, yet you were clearly where you had last been when you fell asleep.

Rising from your mattress, you looked down at yourself, seeing that you were back to your human self. Or...were you your human self in that...dream?

You couldn’t really remember, suddenly feeling quite tense. “God, what WAS that?” you said aloud, rubbing your temple.

You checked your phone and saw yet more requests for Starscream popping into your messages. You flopped back on the bed with a groan. It seemed that you wouldn’t be getting away from him, whether it be your dreams OR wide awake!

Yet what you had experienced…

Throughout the day, you found yourself unable to focus on anything. Whether it be at school/college/work or in your free time, the Decepticon would not leave your brain. That wasn’t really new, the constant requests for him made his presence in your mind a regular, yet this was different. You didn’t know how to explain it, but Starscream seemed to make his presence known. As in, ridiculous as it sounds, like he’s always over your shoulder, watching you.

A fictional character was somehow transcending reality and subtly manipulating you into doing his bidding. Or was it yours, as, despite the feeling of eyes on the back of your head, you have been wanting to write about him for some time.

Yet unlike before, something had changed. True, that dream you had left you rather flustered (not to mention quite wet that morning), but also...inspired? Was that the word? Well, whatever it was, it eventually managed to get you going on churning out more reader insert entries. You went through your requests, going down the list of bots and scenarios when finally, one snags your attention.

Well, that was quite the challenge, wasn’t it?

Sure, you had experimented with that in the past, yet once again, Starscream seemed to haunt you everywhere you went. Just what was it that...that made him so difficult for you? Why couldn’t you just write something?!

It was then though that your mind went back to the dream and your...intimate encounter with your favorite version of the character. His words regarding your doubts, your insecurities regarding your ability to write for him….how all of it was true. And how, to overcome it, you had to cast aside your inhibitions.

You just had to “do”.

It was an hour later or so that you were still at your computer/laptop, trying to figure out where to go from here. You had the scenario in mind, now to build a plot off of it. So far, all you had was that it was in G1 (or at least some version of it at least. Hey, headcanons and AUs were serious business, you had learned), and that you somehow became Starscream’s vampire bride in the end. It was kinda stupid, but hey, G1 was known for equally crazy shit.

The only problem was where to start.

True, you knew what the end result would be, but how to get there was the question. Better yet, how the hell do robots turn into vampires?! Ugh! You couldn’t do this! You just couldn’t! You were doomed for failure! You slapped your hand against your head, trying to keep yourself from getting too frazzled. But how were you going to do this?

It was then that you heard something. Or rather, thought something.

‘Shockwave this, Shockwave that. All I ever hear about is how great Shockwave is!’

You knew that quote! Starscream’s brigade! It grew to be one of your favorites of G1! But what did that have to do with…wait a minute. Shockwave...Shockwave was left on Cybertron but was also somewhat of a scientist. And there had been references to other planets and aliens in the series (hell, Season 3 had barely anything to do with Earth at that point), and there were such things as Petro Rabbits, so why couldn’t Shockwave have a collection of live specimens to study?

And you, the Reader, we’re going to be his assistant.

From there, more and more came to you, you typing like mad as you clicked and clacked the keyboard, everything just pouring out of you at once! You were doing this, you realized. Holy shit, you were doing this! On and on you wrote, getting the outline and first part done. Then came the second, third, and so on.

And when you finally gained the courage to post them (you had not submitted them quite yet, having held back), you saw that the reception was...good.

It was good.

Sure, the first part only had a few likes so far, but it seemed to be ok. Still, you didn’t get your hopes up too high. But it wasn’t long after that you found yourself aboard the abandoned ship again, only this time, there was no one in the cell. You knew well who should’ve been in there.

“S-Starscream?” You stammered, voice echoing off the walls. It was then that you felt a servo trail it’s way up your spine, causing you to nearly leap out of your skin. Turning, you saw the amused, chortling form of your favorite Starscream, clearly pleased with himself in having given you a fright. “Don’t do that to me!” you held your chest, feeling your heart beating.

“Welcome back.” The Seeker greeted. “It looks like we’re in for another eventful night.”

Your eyes widened. “We are?” You remembered last time well. How bizarre the whole situation was...but also how good it felt. How good he felt.

“Yes, you’ve been aching for another night with me, haven’t you?” He whispered in your ear, sending a chill down your back. “Don’t bother denying it. I can see into your thoughts, remember?” His eyes then began to glow red. “And I also know what you’ve written about me recently.”

“Oh, that.” Your cheeks grew red. “Yeah, well...it was my first time writing for you, and...well, I’ve never done anything with vampires before, so…” it was then that you noticed Starscream’s eyes seeming more...red than you remembered. And...and since when did he have fangs?! “The hell?!”

Starscream only chuckled. “Don’t you remember? This was from what you had written but a short time ago.”

Oh, right. “It’s…kinda stupid though, the story I mean,” you shifted nervously. “I mean, it’s not really meant to be taken seriously.”

“But,” Starscream approached you, holding your chin gently. “You DID finally face your fears, right?” You nodded. “But yet, you’re still unsure.” Sighing, you nodded. “Well,” his optics glimmered. “We’ll have to fix that, won’t we?”

You stiffened, knowing where this was going. The environment around you changed to that of the Nemesis’ brig, you in a cell with Starscream. The same position the Reader was in near the end of the story. You knew well what was about to happen, Starscream slowly backing you up against the wall. You released a heavy sigh and let it happen. The Seeker bit down on your neck and into your flesh. There was slight pain, yes, yet you could stop this anytime you wanted. You let it continue. The sting from his fangs entering you lasted only a few seconds though, as there was a rushing warmth that overtook you.

“Ah, found your courage, have you?” Starscream questioned. “Well then,” he lowered his hand to your lower regions, lightly stroking it. “Shall we take things one step further?”

Honestly, you didn’t see why not.

That night, you two had another session, the Decepticon exploring and driving you crazy with his methods, you, in turn, responding in kind. Turns out a tongue savoring his spike was one of the things you did that could make him, fittingly enough, scream. And then, you woke up, a kiss bringing out of the dream once again. More requests, and yet...and yet, this time, you felt somewhat more...confident.

You decided to try out another scenario, taking your time with this one, yet not allowing anxiety to have as much of a hold over you. And, to your surprise, this Starscream x Reader fic got good reception too! True, you still wrote for all the other Autobots and Decepticons, yet the Seeker, whatever incarnation he was, proved to be some of your most popular.

Which, in turn, led to you getting more and more visits from him.

It wasn’t each night, yet sometimes, especially when you were either in the midst of writing one, or were struggling to come up with a scenario, he would appear. Luring you into the darkness to join him, allowing yourself to cast away the chains that once held you back.

And thus, you found yourself here again. The same ship, and same voice calling you. It seemed he wished to repeat how you two had met the first time.

A dive into a new situation for the Reader, aka yourself, or something new? Sometimes Screamer himself came up with ideas, of which you would do, if not just to allow him to let you finish. Though you did get your revenge mostly, there were times where you were just wanting some smooth pillow talk. Starscream frankly made you exhausted. In a good way? Honestly, even now, you weren’t sure.

And yet, here you were, about to indulge him yet again.

“My honey I know, I know,” the source of the voice was close. “With the da-a-wn, that yo-o-u, will be go-o-ne,” you saw the cell, yet Starscream wasn’t confined. You couldn’t confine him now, even if you wanted to. “But tonight…” and, if you had to be honest, “You belong,” you didn’t want to. “To me.”

and exr translated that as “unwelcome”, but in japanese the word used is ろくでもない (roku de mo nai)-- useless, worthless. it seems that it wasn’t that jc didn’t want lwj in his house, rather, he considered him, like... trash. now i’m not surprised wwx got so pissed! jc has every right to say he doesn’t want wwx and lwj in his ancestor hall, considering they’re strangers! but personally insulting lwj is something else for wwx.

2. lol, in his “you don’t know? well then i’ll tell you” speech, jiang cheng calls lwj “lan-er-gongzi” in chinese, but 蓝公子殿 (ran-koushi-dono) in japanese; he’s not only already calling him a gongzi but ALSO adding the -dono honorific, the same lsz used for wen ning. and the thing about japanese insults is that the basic ones are simply ex-honorific terms: for example, kisama, a very rude term currently meaning “son of a bitch, bastard”, kanji-wise means “esteemed one”. so basically, jc is taking the “you (derogatory)” joke and amping it up to eleven.

ooh and again! he calls wen ning and lwj “ofutakata” which is a respectful, polite term for “two people”. in the very next sentence he calls wn an enemy and a wen dog. i love him

7. lwj says “move!” angrily in the cn version, harshly in the exr translation, but he bellows (怒号 dogou) in the japanese version and i love it

8. speaking of bellowing! wen ning first tells jiang cheng to 抜いてください (nuite kudasai, please unsheathe it). but when jc doesn’t, and threatens him instead, wn uses Impolite, Direct Speech and says 早く抜け！ (hayaku nuke!, take it out! now!) and although for the rest of his speech he keeps the polite word endings, still!! wow!!!

9. in exr, wn says that jiang cheng “passed a stone forest” on his way to the mountain top, and indeed the hanzi say so: 石林 shílín, 石 -- stone, 林 -- forest. However if you actually google it, 石林 is

a limestone formation! in japanese, the word used is 巨石, literally “giant rock(s)”. so, rather than passing through a mysteriously-sounding “stone forest”, jiang cheng bumped into a forest of gigantic rock formations, and he tried to walk around it for an hour before he finally managed to pass through!

10. oh, i won’t check the original novel because i cba, but in the exr translation, “the night was silent, and the river’s flow was heavy” and i just ??? what does the second part of this sentence MEAN. well, in japanese, they’re both silent/quiet. “the river flowed quietly in the silence of the night”, or something like that. another bonus to reading the japanese version: i do sort of speak this language and can check sentences that i didn’t fully understand/weren’t sure of in english. hehe

Can I ask about your opinion about something on WN's consciousness? Do you think it's only WWX's demonic cultivation that returned it or there are more things that contributed in returning his consciousness? Ngl, I'm really confused about it because WWX himself said he's not sure if he can return WN's consciousness and y'know LWJ is there when WN gained consciousness so I'm guessing that LWJ had something to do about it. Especially because he's using his spiritual energy to suppress WN and prevent him to attack the other Wen Remnants. So thoughts? 😅😅

I think that's a good guess! haha Since WWX himself wasn't sure how to do it. I mean WWX recalled Wen Ning back as a fierce corpse but he was too filled with resentments to be rational. Then when Wen Ning broke free maybe WWX's flute playing and the soul soothing music that the Lan Clan is famous for and that LWJ is uniquely proficient in, being played on Wangji, built on each other to make it possible. I think that's a very logical conclusion. WangXian achieving the impossible ;) <3

It’s important to remember that he’s canonically forgotten most of his childhood, including most of his time as a starving, homeless orphan being attacked by dogs, and that he regularly lies and tells himself that the genuinely awful things that have happened to him don’t matter (see: the GC transfer).

Final note (Sorry, probably should’ve done this in a reblog): I went back and read starting from chapter 76 through JXZ’s death and the aftermath once WWX and WN are back in the Demon-Quelling Cave. WWX initially rejects JXZ’s offer to go back to Golden Carp Tower and defend himself because he knows that it’s very likely that the Jin Clan will side with its own over him. Furthermore, when he’s back in the cave, before he gets needled, he’s freaking out, asking over and over again what he’s…

…supposed to do. He doesn’t propose the solution in the quoted section until WQ tells him her plan, which is that she and her brother will sacrifice themselves in hopes of saving WWX and allowing him to keep protecting the Wen refugees. This seems to confirm my suspicions that it’s not only not a serious plan: it’s a plan that WWX knows almost certainly won’t work. Having reread the whole section, I think that he’s trying to talk WQ into letting him sacrifice himself in place of her and WN.

So, I actually agree with a lot of your points here! It's definitely a desperate attempt to prevent WQ and WN from sacrificing themselves, it's completely understandable why he's not able to think the plan out carefully, and I definitely don't think he seriously believes that he's a favoured member of the Jiang sect, lol.

I can see though how I was kind of unclear on that last point, so let me expand on what I meant. When I said that WWX still expects things to play out as though he's a favoured member of the Jiang sect, I definitely did not mean "WWX has expectations about how things go for a favoured member of the Jiang sect and, due to believing he's a favoured member of the Jiang sect, he expects things to go that way for him."

Instead, I mean something like:

- WWX's life has been significantly shaped and influenced by being a favoured member of the Jiang sect

- Although he was certainly conscious of some of the ways that influenced his experience of life, it also influenced that experience in ways he wasn't conscious of.

- That is, there are a number of ways his experience was influenced by his being a favoured member of the Jiang, that he didn't realize was due to him being a favoured member of the Jiang; to him it was simply part of how he experienced life

- Therefore, though he definitely knows he isn't a favoured member of the Jiang, he still (in some ways) expects things to play out as if he were a favoured member of the Jiang, because he doesn't realize that his expectations of life and the world, in these areas, were due to his having been a favoured member of the Jiang.

And to clarify, it's not that he can't work out things won't still happen that way! It's not that he can't realize if someone asks the question! We see him come to that understanding here. It's just that there are things he hasn't put that thought into yet, and "the benefit of the doubt from the world at large" is one of them.

And honestly, I think this is pretty normal? It doesn't require malice or stupidity. Privilege can be invisible, and it's really hard to figure out every part of your experience that's due to privilege, even if you're trying! I actually think WWX's year in the burial mounds, while it would have made some differences very clear, helped hide some other differences. He's not in society the same way he was as a member of the Jiang, and he hasn't had a chance to experience how his new position (or lack of it) changes things in that context.

That said, I'm not really sure how his not thinking the plan out carefully relates to whether or not the assumptions behind the plan come from a place of privilege? I agree that it's a plan coming from a place of desperation, but—honestly, if anything, I think when you're desperate and scrambling and not thinking things through properly is when you're most controlled by your assumptions. And I do think it's significant that this is the unworkable plan he comes up with. Like, I don't think JGY would ever come up with this plan in this position, even as a scrabble in terror and desperation, because he's well and truly internalized that it wouldn't work! That's my point.

I'm not sure I 100% follow the trauma repression argument? Even if we grant that he has this assumption because he's repressing the loss of not being part of the Jiang, that still seems to me like...well, it's an assumption that he arrived at by having been part of the Jiang? I'm sorry, I think I'm not understanding this correctly.

On a last note, I'm not sure if you mean that WWX is trying to convince WQ to let him sacrifice himself in their place in the section I quoted in the original post, or if you mean that he switches to that later. I definitely agree that he does end up arguing that:

But I don't think he's doing that in the section I quoted initially, and I'm not actually sure how the argument he's making there contributes to convincing WQ he should sacrifice himself instead.

On the topic of WWX's privilege vs JGY's, there's this exchange with WQ after he's killed Jin Zixuan that always stands out to me:

He could neither shout nor move, rasping, “Why are you going to Koi Tower? I wasn’t the one who cursed him with Hundred Holes at all…”

Wen Qing, “But they have set their minds that it was you.”

Wei WuXian tried his best to think of ways to deal with this. Suddenly, he thought of something, “Then find the real person who set the curse! Jin ZiXun’s definitely gone to experts of cursing. The most common way to deal with these curses is to hit them back, let the effects rebound back to the one who placed the curse. Even if not all of the power could be rebounded, a large portion can. We can just look for someone who has the same curse marks on them!”

Wen Qing, “There’s no use.”

Wei WuXian, “Why not?”

Wen Qing, “There are so many people—where could we look for them? Set up a checkpoint on every street of every city and make everyone take off their clothes so that we can check?”

Wei WuXian protested, “Why not?”

Wen Qing, “Who’d be willing to set up these checkpoints for you? And for how long do you intend to search? We could perhaps find them after eight or ten years, but would those people be willing to wait?”

At this point WWX still feels on some level like he can defend himself with reason—not just from one person, but from the mob. He expects that something like finding the actual person who set the curse can be done, and while I don't think he's really thinking through how much work that would be, it suggests that he's not used to having to think through how much effort it would take, to prove himself innocent. Intuitively, he expects to be given the benefit of the doubt, not by everyone but by enough people; intuitively, he expects a situation where at least someone in authority is on his side.

And he's wrong, of course, as he realizes here, and as he learns even more deeply at Nightless City. But I think the fact that he has to learn it speaks a lot to what his experience of the world was, until this point.

And the thing about JGY is, he'd never have made this mistake, because he's never had the things that WWX did! He's never been given the benefit of the doubt, he knows not to expect support from any authority. Tbh we see him surviving only because he doesn't make this mistake: what do you think would have happened to him, if he'd turned himself in at Langya, if he'd tried to argue with NMJ after Sun Palace instead of fleeing?

There are a lot of scenes showing just how different their circumstances are, but this moment says a lot to me. Even now, even after everything that's happened, WWX still expects things to play out as though he's a favoured member of the Jiang sect; and he doesn't realize just how different things are for someone who's really outside the system.

He holds it under his arm and throws another smile at Crowley, which has Crowley sighing and rolling his eyes to once again protest this whole silly endeavor. [1] Crowley, tired of trying to figure out which entity to use when he experiences feelings, has recently started using made-up gods instead, starting with the gods of the underworlds. He hasn’t found one that works yet, but he’s willing to try them all if necessary.

[2] It certainly has nothing to do with the strategically sweet and pleading face that had greeted him when he’d entered the bookshop to pick up his favorite angel[3] for lunch.

“Seriously, angel?” Crowley asks, sliding his sunglasses down just far enough to allow Aziraphale to see the disbelief in his eyes. “Autumn is terrible. Now winter, that’s the best season. I saw it in a window display and it just called to me. And it was right after the weather began to turn, and I just had to try it on. And then it was so soft and warm, I couldn’t not buy it. It’s like being wrapped in a hug.[11] I thought today would be the perfect time to debut it. It might get regular rotation with my jacket this autumn and winter.”

He hopes Aziraphale will find another squash to coo over, but he feels his presence next to him as soon as he’s queued up, but he’s cheerfully quiet. They wait in comfortable silence for the people in front of them to get their ciders, Aziraphale’s wide eyes taking in every aspect of the event, and Crowley softens. He enjoys teasing his best friend—doesn’t think their friendship would have survived without it, and truthfully Aziraphale can give as good as he gets, so he doesn’t feel guilty for it[12]—but he also does genuinely enjoy seeing Aziraphale enjoying himself. That smile can have Crowley walking on air for days, even when it isn’t directed at him. It’s the reason he asks the angel out to lunch so often, despite himself being the type to drink his meal rather than eat it. There’s nothing better than watching Aziraphale eat. Or find a new book to fall in love with. Or … yes, even enjoy this absolutely awful season they currently find themselves living in.

[12] Not that demons ever feel guilty. Crowley makes a single exception for back in the beginning and the thing with the humans and the apple. But they don’t talk about that.

They finally make it to the front of the queue, where Crowley asks for one cider, extra cinnamon, for Aziraphale, and one mulled wine[13] for himself.

They start strolling again, and Crowley lets the angel choose the direction, following along, like he always does, as he always will do.

“I don’t understand it.”

“Oh hush, you,” Aziraphale admonishes with no heat, patting Crowley’s arm, which has unknowingly been tucked into by Aziraphale’s non-cider-holding hand. That’s been happening a lot lately, but Crowley’s not about to call attention to it, lest it stop. “What I meant was, you said mere months ago that—and I quote—‘I like spooky.’ At the old satanic hospital in Tadfield, if you remember.”

“If I remember? As if I could forget any part of that God-forsaken[14] week.”

“Well, anyway. That’s beside the point. The point is, you like spooky.” Here, Aziraphale punctuates his words with more arm pats. “And autumn is when Samhain[16] occurs. You can’t have spooky without autumn.

I’m just saying, none of that manufactured spooky does anything for me.”

They come to a booth with caramel popcorn, and without even looking at his angel, Crowley signals for a bag, handing it over to Aziraphale as he counts out the correct number of coins. Aziraphale sighs happily and begins munching on it immediately.

“You’re just a stick-in-the-mud,” he says, going back to their conversation.

“Excuse me? I’m the stick-in-the-mud, Mr. I’ve-worn-the-same-jacket-for-one-hundred-and-eighty-years?”

“You’d do well to remember your car is ninety years old.”

“Practically new compared to your old smelly coat.”

Aziraphale’s jaw-drop this time is definitely not feigned. “You take that back. You said it looked good on me.”

“Yeah, in 1840.”

Aziraphale looks truly hurt. “It’s my favorite,” he says quietly, and Crowley relents. He can’t not, when he’s up against that face.

“It’s a nice coat, angel. But it’s good seeing you in something else for once.”

“Thank you, my dear. But the point is, you have no room to call me a stick-in-the-mud. Autumn is wonderful, and you can’t take that away from me.”

Crowley tries and fails to hide his smile. “How’s the popcorn?”

“Perfect!” Aziraphale says, the glow coming back to him. “This is all perfect. The weather could not be more beautiful or autumnal. I can smell spices and caramel and corn husks. The pumpkins look a particularly brilliant shade of orange this year. There are happy people all around. It’s lovely.”

Crowley looks around, seeing a particularly fiendish child twirling his unaware sister’s hair around a candied apple—who he silently cheers on—a small toddler screaming their head off when their parental figure offers them a pumpkin, a couple fighting near the corn maze. The stench of city and human beings is far too strong to be drowned by the sweets and spices, though it does fight for dominance with the moldering leaves blanketing the ground. And though the weather is nice now, he can see a storm building in the distance. They’d do well to hurry through the rest of the festival before they get caught in a chilly downpour.

But He won’t suggest this. He’ll follow his angel as he coos at the children posing for pictures with goofy scarecrows, as he bounces over to the candied apple vendor for a (non-twisted-in-hair) treat, as he begs with his soulful eyes for a hayride. He’ll follow his angel to the end of the world. He’s already done so, and he’d do it all over again if he had to. He’ll let them get caught in the freezing, miserable rain because Aziraphale is too taken with the pumpkin carving contest to notice the darkening clouds, though he will miracle them dry as soon as he’s able. He’ll follow his angel back into his shop, lugging the bag of things Aziraphale didn’t have enough arms to carry himself, and too big of eyes and stomach to not buy.

Aziraphale will light a fire, make two cups of whiskey-spiked chai, and wiggle his way into his favorite chair in the back room. Crowley will follow, landing on the sofa that has molded to his angles and long legs. They’ll talk about Poe and Mary Shelley. Crowley will talk Aziraphale into watching Young Frankenstein. Then Aziraphale will beg to be allowed to read aloud “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar,”[19] and Crowley will concede it’s just a little spooky. Though only just a little.

And though he won’t say it out loud, Crowley will think that maybe, just maybe, autumn isn’t so bad, when you’ve got your favorite person by your side.

Flip-Flappers episode 9, first impressions.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Okay, I can’t help but feel that this episode is directly chastising me for shit-talking the last episode. It’s like, “Oh, so you’re going to badmouth our action scenes? Well, how about a super-tense violent showdown with high stakes, high emotional drama, and very real consequences for everyone, one that will have you biting your nails, worried sick over everyone’s fates?”

Yeah. Yeah, that’ll do it.

But anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself. And since this is such an important episode, I want to do something different and take it scene by scene. 

We start off with Yayaka, who is now very much on the outs with those KKK motherfuckers in Asclepius. In fact, they’ve apparently decided to cut her loose entirely, replacing her with, and I quote, “The third amorphous child.”

Interesting!

So, before I go on, who is this blue-haired newcomer? Apparently she’s been hiding in the opening credits, so she must be important. I guess she’s of the same makeup as the twins, whom I still suspect are artificial humans. So does that make her a clone of some kind? Is this the mysterious Mimi from Papika’s past, now...reprogrammed or whatever?

Anyway, Yayaka is obviously upset over this, and begs for a second chance, which she is granted, but with the caveat: not only does she have to bring back another amorphous, but she also has to retrieve the ones secreted in Cocona and Papika’s bodies, the ones that allow them to transform. So basically, it’s her or them.

Oh shit.

Back at school, we’re having an amusing echo of the last WN chapter, in that Cocona and Papika are having a bit of a tiff. Cocona’s understandably pissed that Papika called her Mimi, and Papika being Papika, she doesn’t really get that Cocona is upset for a long time and doesn’t comprehend why, which just annoys Cocona further. And since Cocona won’t explain why, Papika gets upset too, so now the two are fighting. 

Also, Papika has her hoverboard back, yay!

However, they have a job to do, so they’re sent into a Pure Illusion that’s all stark and sterile, just a wide open white space.

Meanwhile, the Asclepius trio aren’t having much luck, but when the Flip-Flappers enter Pure Illusion, they zero in on them immediately. Which suggests something interesting: is their something special about Cocona that lets her immediately go to where an amorphous/fragment is located? Is that why they trio keep following them around?

Of course, the two teams enter hostilities immediately. Cocona ends up stuck in some kind of Inception-esque trap room with the twins (who are called Toto and Yuyu, apparently), while Papika and Yayaka face off against one another in an actually pretty funny exchange. Cocona keeps trying to escape, while the twins, having figured out that the room responds to her emotional state, starts fucking with her, preying on her insecurities about her relationship with Papika to make her doubt herself.

And then we get it. A flashback to how Cocona and Yayaka first met. They’ve known each other since they were children, having met at a hospital where Cocona was having some very strange tests taken and pretty much have been best friends ever since.

Except that their relationship is no coincidence. Yayaka was working for Asclepius even then, and they had Cocona pegged as someone special, and assigned Yayaka to spy on her. Except that during said assignment, she came to care about Cocona for real. And why wouldn’t she? Asclepius always treated her pretty poorly, while Cocona showed her genuine affection. And even with her loyalties still being toward  Asclepius, Yayaka is more than a little peeved about Papika swooping in to take Cocona from her.

Anyway, they break out, and the twins get the amorphous, but the mission isn’t over. Yayaka still has to retrieve Cocona and Papika’s fragments. She and Cocona finally have their long-awaited showdown, with the very PI reflecting their relationship in stark relief. Neither want to fight, but they have to, and they do.

And Yayaka wins.

She is egged on by the twins to tear the amorphous from from Cocona’s leg, and trust me, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Don’t do it, Yayaka. Don’t do it. Cocona is your friend, not Asclepius! 

But even though this is her last chance, Yayaka can’t do it. She can’t betray her only friend like that. And just like that, the twins discard her...via a torrent of high ballistic missiles, send straight to Cocona’s prone body...

...only for Yayaka to throw herself right into the missile’s path, taking the full blast.

We leave off with the twins escaping with the amorphous that they’ve recovered and delivering it to Asclepius, while Cocona and Papika rushes Yayaka’s badly injured body back to FlipFlap in hopes of saving her. But as they’re doing that, the KKK dude adds the new amorphous to the totem pole, and Papika suddenly remembers who Mimi was.

Her partner.

Papika had another partner, someone who was not Cocona.

Holy shit.

Well, obviously, as any good wham episode does, we got a lot of answers here but a ton more questions. First of all, Yayaka better come out of this all right. Yeah, I know that Cocona and Papika are the leads, but over these last few episodes she’s grown into my favorite. She just seems to have more at stake and is dealing with much more actual conflict than they are, and I want her to have a happy ending. You guys better not Sayaka/Kyoko me again!

Second, I’m guessing that those tests they were doing on Cocona when she was younger were to see if she was special. Does that mean that her grandmother is in on it? To tell the truth, she’s always struck me as kinda creepy, so I wouldn’t be surprised.

Third, as noted, Asclepius keep calling the macguffins amorphous, while FlipFlap calls them fragments. But fragments of what? Papika’s memory seems to come back more and more as they’re collected, so she might even be more important than originally thought.

Third...Papika had another partner named Mimi? Well, what happened to her? Is she the third amorphous child? Does she have something to do with the little girl in Cocona’s dreams? Also, I went back and rewatched the first minute of the first episode when I saw something that I had overlooked before.
