Hackers have created dedicated software for breaking into Ring security cameras, according to posts on hacking forums reviewed by Motherboard. The camera company is owned by Amazon, which has hundreds of partnerships with police departments around the country.

On Wednesday, local Tennessee media reported that a hacker broke into a Ring camera installed in the bedroom of three young girls in DeSoto County, Mississippi, and spoke through the device's speakers with one of the children.

The family said they had the camera for four days, during which time the hacker could have been watching the kids go about their days.

According to Tennessee local news outlet WMC5, the parents installed the Ring camera in the bedroom of their three young daughters to keep an eye on them. Indoor Ring cameras work with a mobile app that allows users to watch what's happening in real-time and use the speaker to talk through the camera.

“I did a lot of research on these before I got them. You know, I really felt like it was safe,” Ashley LeMay, the girls' mother, told WMC5. A big part of Ring's marketing strategy revolves around making customers feel like their own homes are unsafe, so that they'll turn to surveillance devices to ease those fears.

A household in Mississippi claims a hacker won score admission to to a Ring digicam positioned of their 8-one year-ancient daughter's room and started talking to her, relate local reports.

A video purchased by USA TODAY shows a look of the kid's room while mysterious song starts taking part in from the Ring. A recount can even be heard asserting "Howdy there."

Proper thru one clip, the recount is heard asserting, "I'm your absolute top friend. I'm Santa Claus."

One other clip shows the recount encouraging the kid to extinguish her room. "That that you just can well also elevate out whatever you are desirous to have swish now," stated the recount. "That that you just can well also mess up your room. That that you just can well also spoil your TV."

Ashley LeMay and her husband then determined to disable the Ring digicam.

"As quickly as I purchased to the level the place I heard esteem this person's recount, I knew one thing became once terribly abominable," stated LeMay at some stage in an interview with USA TODAY.

LeMay stated she sold the Ring digicam at some stage in Dim Friday on the recommendation of one other mother. Four days after inserting in it, her daughter became once confronted by the mysterious recount.

LeMay stated the household's Wi-Fi password is assorted from any other machine she uses, and that they use a stable community.

This is no longer the first incident in which customers of security cameras esteem Ring or Nest have skilled mysterious voices or sounds. The parents told WMC5 that they hadn't set up two-factor authentication for the device; failing to do so would make it easier for someone to change their password and take control of their account.

Like other IoT smart home camera hackers, this one used the weak password security on the parents' Ring account to access their dashboard and speak directly through the device. A local NBC outlet also reported hackers targeted a Florida family’s Ring camera recently, with the hacker shouting racial slurs through the device.

The news highlights how although a higher level of protection for Ring accounts is available with two-factor authentication, some users are not deploying it, and Ring is not forcing its deployment either, despite a Ring camera potentially allowing a hacker to spy on sensitive conversations or locations.

Motherboard found several posts on different crime forums where hackers discuss creating tools for breaking into the Ring accounts which are connected to cameras.

"Ring Video Doorbell Config," one thread on a hacking forum reads. A config is a file used to drive special software for rapidly churning through usernames or email addresses and passwords and trying to use them to log into accounts. Hackers have developed configs for a wide variety of websites and online services, from Uber to Facebook.

The thread title adds that the config has a "High CPM," or high "check per minute," meaning it can test if a username and password allows access to a Ring camera quickly. In a different thread, one hacker is offering a Ring.com checker for $6.

Apparently there is demand for the file, with one user adding on the thread, "I saw multiple people asking for this config."

Another added, "I'd assume you would only use these if you actually we're [sic] planning to break into the persons house."

But, this sort of account can be used to harass, too. In the case of the hacked camera in Tennessee, the girls' father was downstairs during the hack, and came upstairs to stop the camera. Any amount of research into safety of in-home cameras would reveal plenty of examples showing why, for most families, putting a camera in a kids’ room is an unnecessary risk: many smart home cameras and IoT devices have been hacked in the past.

A Ring spokesperson said in a statement, "Customer trust is important to us and we take the security of our devices seriously. While we are still investigating this issue and are taking appropriate steps to protect our devices based on our investigation, we are able to confirm this incident is in no way related to a breach or compromise of Ring’s security.

"As a precaution, we highly and openly encourage all Ring users to enable two-factor authentication on their Ring account, add Shared Users (instead of sharing login credentials), use strong passwords, and regularly change their passwords," it added.

Ring security products are facing criticism after multiple reports that the brand’s in-home security cameras have been hacked, including an incident where an 8-year-old Mississippi girl heard voices coming from the device in her bedroom.

In the security footage, a man’s voice is heard, telling the little girl that he’s “Santa Claus,” and her “best friend.” He also encourages the child to mess up her room and break her TV.

“They could have watched them sleeping, changing. I mean they could have seen all kinds of things,” the girl’s mother, Ashley LeMay, told WMC Action News. “It makes me feel like it’s either somebody who knows us or somebody who is very close by.”

Other incidents have been reported in Florida, Texas and Georgia. In Cape Coral, Fla., for example, a hacker gained access into a couple’s Ring camera and made racist comments about their son.

In a statement sent to TIME, Ring said that they take their devices’ security very seriously, but that the incidents are not related to a breach of security protocols.

“We have no evidence of an unauthorized intrusion or compromise of Ring’s systems or network,” the statement reads.

The statement adds that Ring is aware of an incident where “malicious actors” were able to obtain a user’s login credentials from an outside, non-Ring device and use that same information to log into the Ring device. “Upon learning of the incident, we took appropriate actions to promptly block bad actors from known affected Ring accounts and affected users have been contacted,” Ring says.

Craig Shue, an associate professor of computer science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, agrees that the hackers are likely getting Rings users’ account information from third parties (like the details used for an email account or streaming service). Using specialized software, they are then able to recycle those passwords and usernames across multiple devices, including Rings, looking for instances where the login data matches. Motherboard has reported of forums and Discord servers whose users collaborate on such hacking projects.

Shue recommends that users create strong passwords, ensure each is unique across their different accounts and devices, and change them regularly. He also recommends enabling two-step authentication on devices where possible; this adds another step to the authorization process by sending a security code to a registered email or phone number when someone tries to log into an account.

Ring also recommends customers change their passwords and enable two-factor authentication. LeMay told WMC that she did not set up the two-factor authentication for her Ring account. She has since disabled the device and plans on returning it.

Shue says that both Ring and its products’ users bear responsibility for their security. “Manufacturers have the responsibility to clean out devices that can be secured and patch any vulnerabilities that come up,” he tells TIME. “Consumers also have to look out for their own self-interest. It hurts us if it doesn’t go well… we have to always be vigilant.”

“I would also encourage everybody to do their own form of risk assessment and determine what they need in these devices and whether it’s worth the risk to have that functionality,” Shue continues. “It’s kind of crazy that we use passwords as a line of defense for a sensitive device.”
