Melvin Lindsey (July 8, 1955 – March 26, 1992) was a radio and television personality in the DC area. He is known for originating the “Quiet Storm” late-night music programming format.
He was a native of DC and attended Woodrow Wilson High School. He began his broadcast career as an intern at Howard University radio station WHUR-FM. In 1976, he brought the “Quiet Storm” to the station’s late-night lineup, titled after a romantic hit single by tenor crooner Smokey Robinson. The show’s soulfully melodic and moody musical fare made it a phenomenal success, and the ‘love song’-heavy format was quickly replicated at stations across the country that served an urban, African-American adult demographic. Lindsey’s show also gave rise to a category of music of the same name.
After a nine-year run on WHUR, he took his format to another local radio station, WKYS-FM, for five more years, and he hosted Screen Scene for BET. He worked for DC television stations WTTG-TV WFTY-TV and WJZ-TV in Baltimore.
He died from complications of AIDS, but the Quiet Storm format he originated gained widespread popularity. It remained popular over 4 decades after its inception across the nation, especially in evening and late-night radio programs. Artists continue to compose songs that target the audiences of Quiet Storm stations and shows. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

#Repost @gossipingheifers (with @report.for.insta) ... @donniesimpsonsr is the son of a record store owner so he developed his love for music and radio early. By age 15, he was on Detroit’s WJLB, staying there for the next eight years. In 1977, he moved to Washington, D.C. to host the morning show at WKYS which he did for the next 15 years. In 1993, he moved to Washington’s D.C’s WPGC radio, staying there for 17 years. In 2003, Simpson signed an eight-figure, six-year deal with WPGC Radio making him the highest paid and first millionaire radio broadcaster without a nationally syndicated show. However most know Simpson as the host of Video Soul. Simpson was an instant hit for the network ultimately hosting “Video Soul” for 14 years. Just about every hit maker of the era came through to talk to Simpson. In 2004, Simpson was inducted into the BET Hall of Fame and in 2015, he was inducted into the R&B Music Hall of Fame, the only non-musicians to be so honored. Simpson has also won two Billboard awards. In 2017, Simpson celebrated 40 years on D.C. radio with a gala at Washington, D.C’s Warner Theater. Although he “retired” in 2010, Simpson returned to radio and TV in 2017. He is currently the host of “The Donnie Simpson Show” on Washington’s WMMJ-FM. #blackexcellence #melanin #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryeveryday #blackradio #blackwealth #firstblack #ourstory #blackstories #positivevibes #positiveblackimages (at Durham, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8Qyav9JHVH/?igshid=wgrqtsk2qkq0

This is the first time I’m revealing details of my stint in the US Army. As soon as I turned 18 I enlisted into the Army while living in Youngstown, Ohio. After a grueling interview in Dayton, Ohio I was accepted to become a Military Counterintelligence Special Agent. I was shipped out from Cleveland, Ohio by bus to Ft Benning, Georgia. Most of my fellow inductees were from the Hough District of Cleveland. I was born in Punxsutawney, PA where there were zero black residents. I mention this because many times people think racism is partially due to your environment. I believe that to be a false assessment. I never saw a person of color first hand until I was 5 years old. Of course I saw diversity on TV, but not in person. I’ve always believed that I have zero prejudice. Now back to my bus ride from Cleveland. There were only 2 white people on that bus. Me and the driver. My fellow passengers were wild and crazy but treated me with respect and friendship. Little did I know that after my Army days I would be a part of black radio. I had a very adventurous 4 years in the Army as I was stationed out of Ft Myer, VA in the Washington, D.C. area. My military duties occasionally bordered on extreme dangerous situations. I did not leave my Army days unscathed. I have a couple of minor disabilities that I incurred during my tour of duty.i never regret the opportunity and honor to help serve my country. I believe I was the only one in history that loved Army food. Last year on Veterans Day weekend I was treated to an unbelievable several days furnished by the KSJJ Crew! That crew consists of loyal listeners and friends of my post Army days with the Original Slow Jam that started at WKYS and now is heard on Dash Radio and Snoop Dogg’s Cadillacc Music. A different specialty music style has forged unbelievable friendships that will last forever. This is once again the first time articulating my Army days which brought me to Washington, D.C. Today (Veterans Day) I salute those who serve and who have served in the US Armed Services. So many over the years have paid the ultimate price by losing their lives. I lost 3 family members during wars. My love and blessings to you 🙏💙❤️ https://www.instagram.com/p/B4uuIvplzRZ/?igshid=15er3jl1dkwuy

He has such an easy going and humble spirit. 🙏🤗 Get his book and be on the lookout for more info about his original movie screenplay "Anascostia". Thank you so much Gregg for chatting with us!
