The threat level for severe weather in Mississippi tomorrow night has rapidly increased. I have a full discussion on what to expect and when here.

The cold front that gave us storms last night is now out of our way and moving towards the Atlantic Coast. Had quite a lot of storm reports with this system as it moved through the Mississippi and Ohio River Valley…274 reports of wind damage across the US! It’s cooler in the front’s wake, only in the 60s this afternoon in the Jackson metro.
Temperatures will really start to drop tonight as high pressure settles over the region. Forecast lows will dip to the upper 30s tonight in Mississippi! Tomorrow afternoon will be another beautiful spring day with temperatures in the 70s with plenty of sunshine.
Our next storm chance will come late on Friday to start the weekend. As a warm front lifts from the Southwest, light showers may come and go during the day Friday, but the bulk of the rain we’re expecting will come late Friday night and early Saturday morning. With this next system, there is a low-end chance of these storms turning severe, but severe weather parameters are not very impressive at this time.
Rainfall totals also look marginal as this system will also pass through quickly…a lot like what we saw with last night’s front. Totals increase the farther North you go (0.5″ of rain near the Jackson metro, up to 1.5″ near the Memphis metro).
I think this next system will be out of our way by lunchtime Saturday. Skies should be clearing out behind the front and temperatures will remain cool once again. Sunshine should stick with us for Sunday as well.
The next week will more than likely feature near-average or just above-average temperatures in Mississippi…forecast guidance do not have highs getting above 80º until next Friday.
Winter is not ready to quit just yet! That’s all I’ve got for now. As always I’ll be watching our next system for severe potential. Have a great day!

Severe weather likely across Mississippi Tuesday night
We are now in April: the month where Mississippi on average sees the most tornadoes. As is typical of this time of year, we've got a slight chance of seeing a few weak tornadoes Tuesday night.
A strong cold front will be sweeping through Mississippi late on Tuesday night, giving us another possibility of severe weather in our area. The main surface low with this system will be centered near the Great Lakes region, meaning that it will be far enough to the North that atmospheric dynamics in our area will not be entirely sufficient for truly substantial severe weather.
That being said, this event will more than likely be very similar to the severe weather we saw this past Wednesday night in the Jackson metro area, which brought 3 brief tornado touchdowns (EF-0 in Rankin County, EF-1 in Attala County, EF-1 in Choctaw County) and many other reports of wind damage.
This system will begin to pass through our area during the evening commute on Tuesday. The rain should be exiting our state by Wednesday morning. Storm timing will favor stronger storms across the Mississippi River Tuesday afternoon, where daytime heating will be working to the storms' advantage. Because this will be an overnight event, the line of storms should be weakening as they march East through Mississippi due to the absence of daytime heating.
Brief damaging wind gusts, small hail, and brief SPIN-UP tornadoes are all possible with this event. This will NOT be an outbreak of supercells, but rather an intense squall line of storms.
Have a way to receive weather information in the event of a warning being issued near you! Nighttime outbreaks are always tricky because most of us are asleep, but making sure your NOAA weather radios are charged and ready is an easy way to wake yourself up. Should the power go out, make sure your devices are also charged so that you can tune into our coverage with the WJTV app from your severe weather safe spot.
Fortunately I don't see this being a night where you'll need to be up all night long, but you will more than likely be rudely awoken when the storms are passing through. Stay safe, folks!

3/5/18 Monday Afternoon Weather Update
Thunderstorms will be moving through Mississippi this evening. Some of those could turn severe, although the threat level is currently MARGINAL (1 out of 5). They will be crossing the MS River by around 5 PM and moving through the Jackson metro from 6 to 7 PM. Showers will continue for most of the evening and should be ending before sunrise tomorrow morning. After the cold front fully passes through, we will be sunny and cooler tomorrow afternoon. We will stay sunny & cool through this Friday. #mswx

3/2/18 Friday Morning Weather Update
A strong surface high to our Northwest will give us lots of sunshine and cooler temperatures this weekend. This is the first weekend in a long time without rain! Enjoy it. A strong coastal storm is bringing impacts to the Northeastern United States, in the form of coastal flooding, heavy snow and strong winds. Highs today in the Jackson metro will top out near 65 degrees. Lows tonight will be especially cool, dropping to the low 40s & upper 30s in a few spots to the North. Tomorrow afternoon we'll keep the sunshine going, highs slightly warmer than today in the upper 60s. Sunday cloud cover will increase and light rain chances come back into the forecast at 10%. Steady rain is expected starting next week on Monday, that rain chance is up to 60%.

2/24/18 Saturday Morning Weather Update
A weak surface low pressure to our West will rapidly deepen and lift Northward, leading to a severe weather outbreak across the Mississippi and Ohio River Valley later tonight. Before those storms get here, we will very warm yet again today as we are in the open warm sector of that surface low. It will also be very windy this afternoon, winds could reach as high as 25 to 35 miles per hour at times. Highs expected in the low 80s. Tonight will bring heavy rain, damaging winds, and possibly isolated tornadoes to our area in the form of a strong squall line of thunderstorms. The squall line will move through our Western Counties and the Delta from 9PM to 12AM, through the metro from 12AM to 3AM, and the Pine Belt from 3AM to 6AM. Have a way to receive severe weather information overnight in the event of any warnings being issued. Due to soils already being saturated from this week's heavy rain, trees and power lines are more likely to fall. Rain will continue nearly all day tomorrow, especially in South Mississippi, so also be prepared for the possibility of flooding in our area.

2/18/18 Quick Weather Update
Cloudy skies with light rain early this morning. High temperatures today will have a large spread across the region...in the Delta, it will be cooler where we'll see the low to mid 60s. In South Mississippi and the Pine Belt, we will warm up to the low to mid 70s. Light rain is possible this afternoon, but that chance is low at 20%. More sunshine is expected tomorrow and record warmth is likely this week...highs will climb to the 80s Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Lows will be warm as well in the 60s this week. That is typically where our highs are this time of year. Rain chances pick up Wednesday night and Thursday morning as thunderstorms are likely across the area. Overall, a warm & wet weather pattern is setting up to last all week long this coming week.

2/12/18 Monday Afternoon Weather Update
It's a cold start to the week! Cloudy skies will prevail this afternoon as we top out in the mid 40s. Overnight lows will just barely drop to the low 40s under partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will rebound into the 60s with a few spotty showers expected by the evening. The low-end rain chance will stick around throughout the week with more clouds than sunshine. Afternoon highs will be warm for February in the 70s. The next best chance for widespread rain arrives Friday as another cold front swings through.
