I started this on the 6th of January, and in accordance with the goal I set myself, it is done within the year!

Isi had not become a knight to be a soldier. She had wanted to be the knights who had helped her and Sierra up off the cliffside. She had also wanted to change the world. And she had done that; she and her friends had freed the dragons and unseated the king. Now, it would be enough to return to the small, because it was no less important. Her choice to spare Enya had cost her at the time. It had been just a small bit of good; it had not even seemed that important in the grand scheme of things, but she had clung to it. And it had led her here, to a chance to help a lot of people. At the time, she had questioned if it was even worthwhile, if it would not have been better to silence her conscience and keep the stability of her comfortable life. It had been worth it, because it had led her here. It had not meant nothing. It had sparked change she had not even believed possible. But it would have been worth it anyway, because it had been good. Any small bit of good was worth doing.

So... what's next? Eek. I've gotta do some editing (I have made extensive use of the comment function). And then sometime in the new year, I'll put out a post asking for some beta readers, so stay tuned for that!!

hello there!

following through with my tradition of posting a new writeblr intro every single year, here we go – a brand new reintro where i talk a little bit about myself and my current writing projects. so, here we go, onto all that good stuff!

about me

i'm ann, a twenty-year-old writer from kerala, currently based in kochi

i live with my husband, who is a musician, and lead a very creative life of sorts

i'm an infp, enneagram type 2

i write literary fiction and poetry

i'm a discovery writer and have a thing for sad stories with traumatised characters

my wips

i recently finished a litfic novel called dairy whiskey and am editing it right now, hoping to get it ready for agent submissions in a month or two. i put my heart and soul and blood and bones into it, so if you’d like to dive into the story and read a few excerpts, you can check out the intro here and every other excerpt here!

rock salt is my main wip since finishing dairy whiskey. it is the story of identical twins rain and norah as they move out for college and navigate their lives on their own, which ends up in them growing apart. if you like complicated sibling relationships and the struggles of growing up, you’ll love this book!

i so badly want to start writing it, but i don’t think i’ll be able to until dairy whiskey is in a more secure position. so, there probably won’t be any updates for a few months, but you can read the wip intro here.

this is a gay vignette novel that i started writing back in 2021 as a source of personal joy. this is the story of how a singer-songwriter desperate for normalcy meets a boy with a heart heavy with guilt. this is the story of how they fall in love and it’s honestly quite wholesome <3

i haven’t worked on this book in so long and i’ve been trying to sneak some words in, but it feels like the book needs a fresh start. i don’t know, i just might start it all over again. but until then, here’s an outdated wip intro.

green room is a literary/experimental memoir documenting my teenage years as a writer. it is a deep dive into craft and how it affects life, particularly how it moulds you as a person. i haven’t started drafting this yet, but here’s a wip intro for now.

48. How dramatic are they?

THIS IS HARD FOR ME TO DEFINE TBH... on one hand I want to say "he handles most things as best he can" but on the other hand... he tends to be a little. On the emotional/sensitive/dramatic side </3 for one thing he is Most Certainly an Extremely Jealous person, especially where his partners are concerned. He doesn't want to be possessive or weird about it, but he's deeply insecure and emotionally neglected, so he ends up being... A Handful sometimes, not always handling things well or maturely. On the whole, I think he is an exceptionally dramatic person - not necessarily in a catty or petty way, but in more of a "there's nothing, literally nothing, I won't do to keep this person around/keep their interest/make someone proud of me." Dramatic in a way that is very clearly driven by insecurity, fear, and desperation-fueled insanity.

72. How do they feel about love?

He has very complicated feelings about love. In a very basic sense, he doesn't really... know what it is?? That sounds so stupid but I'm not sure how else to put it. His mother was emotionally abusive and his father was absent, and his relationship with his cousin isn't exactly a model of healthy kinship. He never really had friends (without benefits/without transactional obligations) before he left the Arboretum, so it takes him a minute to even really figure out what Love (platonic or otherwise) is Supposed To or Should look like, as opposed to what he understands it to be like.

That said, he feels strongly about the concept that love is not a "one and done" thing, and that he can love his friends as strongly as he loves a partner. He would murder and steal and go to the ends of the earth for Raphael (once they get there), and he would do the same for Sonya, who is, has been, and always will be Just A Friend. He's deeply protective of the love he finds and establishes, and it would devastate him to lose a partner or a friend in equal measure.

There's a large part of Conall that feels like he doesn't deserve love like that; he wants it, badly, but he isn't sure what to do with a real, healthy love. Platonically, he feels like he has to prove he's still worthy of that love day to day. Romantically, he feels like he has to safeguard it and keep his partner's interest at all costs. It takes him a long time to unlearn the sort of neglect-and-abuse-carved mindset.

TL;DR: he feels strongly about love, but his feelings are complicated. At the end of the day, love of any kind is something he is starved for and unused to, so he gets a little Weird about receiving it.

96. What’s their sense of humour like? (Dad jokes, morbid humour, basic knock-knock jokes, stand up comedy, etc)

Initially extremely self-deprecating, which was learned from his mother. Once Conall is away from her, though, it starts to become his own thing, which is a sort of healthy mix of dirty jokes, bad puns, and friendly nagging. BY DIRTY JOKES I mean the extremely lame and eyeroll inducing kind, the "that's what he said" kind, the "buy me dinner first" kind. Conall is not a clever person, he isn't capable of coming up with witty retorts </3 but he Does enjoy making people absolutely exasperated with him. He's succeeded in making a joke if someone is telling him to shut up.

Another good example for friendly nagging is just like. Raphael for example has extremely long and thick hair, and once they're a bit Closer, Conall is prone to making "we have to keep you away from my home, every twig for a hundred miles will get stuck in your hair" type jokes. Not really malicious, not even really a Joke per se, but just a very light jest. A lot of times its reflective of his Closeness to that person - he likes to demonstrate that he Knows someone, he likes to prove they're Something, that they have a Relationship. More to prove it to himself than anything, but so it goes with him.

44. How long does it take OC to open up to people?

Kyda is an open book, no secrets, no holding back. Ibhan takes time, probably several weeks or even months with most people, he is very reserved and building trust with him takes time, patience and a lot of good comebacks.

46. How does OC act differently after getting to know someone better?

Kyda loves physical forms of affection, the closer you are the more she shall welcome herself to lounging in your lap, leaning up against you, hugging etc

Ibhan may actually crack a smile. like a real, genuine, ‘haha you made me laugh’ kind of smile. He would also allow you into his personal space a bit more, and actually entertain deeper conversations with people he finds interesting

Jasper had promised he would help her through her [lindium] withdrawal and, true to his word, he was never far away. And if he was not there, someone else was. It was the only bright spot in the midst of withdrawal. The first several weeks were awful. She floated in and out of fitful, achey sleep. Her head throbbed and spun, her limbs felt like lead, and none of the food Jasper brought her ever stayed in her stomach long. She could barely stand long enough to walk to the bathroom, so Jasper supported her or carried her. Robin and SB cleaned soiled bedsheets and clothing with a snap of their fingers. Sierra brushed the tangles out of her hair every few days, and braided it so that it would be comfortable to lie on. Some days, she fell asleep to the soft sounds of Enya’s song.

Green Room – WIP Intro

hiii cuties!

have you ever been overcome by an irresistible urge to write a memoir at the age of twenty, or are you normal? i'm definitely not, so here's a new project (again)

green room is an experimental memoir that delves into my teenage years as a writer. i started writing seriously at the age of thirteen and self-published my first book at fourteen, which is something that haunts me to date. but here's the thing – i feel like i've learned a lot in the last six to seven years and wanted to explore it with another writing project.

i don't really know what this book is going to be yet. i'm going to start drafting during nanowrimo as a side project and hopefully finish it by the end of the year, but i'm not in a rush. i want to enjoy the process of writing this so i might take my sweet time.

now because this is an intro post, let's get to some specifics.

genre: creative/literary non-fiction

pov: first person retrospective

structure: a combination of chapters, vignettes, and poetry maybe

projected word count: 50k

concept: literary memoir on a writer's journey through teenage as they navigate genre, form, tense, character, story, plot, theme, atmosphere, and setting.

aesthetics/vibes: abandoned art galleries, mountaintops, beaches at midnight, falling asleep on the terrace, coffee mugs, word documents, cute stationery that never gets used, rejection e-mails, daydreaming, moon phases, still rivers, birds flying in groups, rain, academic validation, morally gray people, the colour green

THE ORIGIN STORY

i had always wanted to write something in retrospect of my teenage and document my growth, but didn't want to be so didactic in doing so. the memoir seemed like a serious piece of writing so i didn't really know if i was qualified enough to start. but if i've learned anything about writing in the last few years, it is that you can write whatever you feel like writing. so here i am with a new wip.

a little bit about the title – i struggled with this the most. but the novel i wrote during my late teens (dairy whiskey) was an entirely green book and i found myself finding thousands of green things every single day. my life had turned a shade of green. i was very inspired by the books bluets by maggie nelson and the white book by kan hang. i decided to make the colour green an important aspect of the book.

i don't know how this is going to turn out or if i'm going to do updates for this one, but who knows, i just might. until then, i hope you enjoy my other writing and shitposting. until next time, goodbye.

Lingering hearts, clover and sage - a fantasy romance

Do you like romance? Are you a fan of slow-burn and the conflict between love and duty? Do you enjoy magic, fantasy cultures and just the barest hints of an incoming apocalypse? Then this story might be for you!

To research the effects of catastrophic magical events on the environment, the elf Naeth gets permission from his isolationist government to cross the border into demonic lands and spend six months in a dilapidated scientific outpost. There he meets the demon Umaen, who gifts him with a beehive, a fluffy red chicken, and an unexpected friendship.

Torn apart by the elves’ strict no-contact laws, they must find a way to cope with the increasingly worrying results of Naeth’s research, while navigating an impossible romance and the clash between their two opposing cultures. Can their relationship survive the distance?

Rating: Explicit (because of a couple of scenes) | Estimated length: 100k words | Available from the second half of February

So what if I surrendered to my impulses and wrote out the entirety of Umaen and Naeth’s love story? My plan is to edit it out nicely, add in some illustrations by yours truly and make it downloadable from Kofi (priced between 2.50$-3$). This is an official INTEREST CHECK! I’m putting a lot of love in this story, and it’s toeing the line between sweet and bittersweet, with lots of feels and a little bit of politics. I hope you’ll stay tuned for new updates!

Did you get into any new genres?

What was your favorite new release of the year? (disregard the numbers tumblr is glitching on me 😭 they’re questions 9 & 10)

i wouldn't necessarily say i got into new genres, but both of my classes during this semester specifically expanded my palate when it comes to speculative fiction so i think that kinda counts! i also read at least 3 craft books this year and ive never really taken the time to do that so maybe that counts too

as for my favorite new release of the year, i would say sorrowland by rivers solomon! i actually didnt read a lot of new releases (so much of my reading list this year was dictated by what was assigned for class OOF) but this one i was very much happy to be assigned and ended up loving it a LOT

The Firebreathers taglist is being retired...

...because I’m moving on to querying and the bulk of the drafting for book 3!

First of all: thank you to everyone who first signed up for this taglist, and super thank you for everyone who stayed on it after I started the rewrite in late 2020! You all helped me fall back in love with writing after years of self-doubt, and I cannot overstate how much that means to me.

Second of all: this does not mean Millennium Saga content will be stopping!
