"The very first thing you need to know is this." Fleet was standing in front of their open pantry, with all of the cupboards lining the wall open as well, displaying the food stores available to the residents. "People have literally no idea of self-control or moderation. They'll grab anything if they think they can get away with it." He shook his head in prim disapproval, saying, "--even your friends will try to get away with things. My friend Ares stole milk to make something for his girlfriend. They're shameless."

Fleet lifted a clipboard that had been magnetized to one of the huge commercial fridges in the community kitchen, saying, "Here's our list of the major staples, which go up and down all the time depending on if the raiders find stuff, if things go bad, or if people decide they're allowed to use however much flour they want because they feel like having parker house rolls despite there being ZERO reliable source of wheat or any nearby mill for us to replenish it."

He tutted his tongue against the roof of his mouth. "You think I'm being a tyrant," Fleet said after a moment. He thinned his eyes, waiting to see what side of the fence Harry fell on.

The explosion had unsettled everyone. Of course, it'd sent people swarming. What was left of the raiders, hunters probably outside security too. And people like Vi were left on the inside, having to wait for whatever news would be brought back.

Still, that was no reason to drop everything. Which was she was at Harry's front door right now, toolbelt around her hips and toolbox in one arm. "Hey. I'm here to look at your oven. You said it wasn't working properly." Vi's voice was a little gruff. Her patience was running a little low, admittedly. The explosion had strained her even further.

"Mind letting me in?"

"Brought you some chow!" Ike announced, swinging the bag through the bars for Harry as he pulled up a chair and sat down on the other side of the cell. "They said it was something good today but I didn't double check. Might be meatless so if you're a veggiesaurus, you're in luck!"

He crossed his legs, leaning back with a chummy smile. "You doing okay in there? It's a kind of an antiquated system we've got but we haven't gotten around to changing it yet. It's worked so far, I guess. Not so much in terms of if somebody's been bitten, because we can check you physically for that, but I mean..." Ike tikked his tongue along the edges of his upper teeth. "You know how it is out there. All kinds of unsavoury types of people who might misrepresent themselves to gain entry to a safe town."

Of course, of all the people he’d happen across in the jungle -- after eight years abroad from North Beach -- it would have to be bloody Harry. Without even the benefit of her brother’s company to cushion her nettles and sweeten her wormwood. 

“Alright, then, Harry,” Ned said by way of greeting, once the preliminary precautions had been taken and they’d established that they were, in fact, who they were supposed to be. He said it dully, with no excitement. He didn’t imagine she felt any happier seeing him. “On the trail of some incredibly secret but unimaginably wonderful stinkweed that you’re sure to boast about?”

She could be well-nigh insufferable about her knowledge. Ned didn’t mind a swot, brainy sorts could be useful in a pinch, but the ones who acted as though nobody else knew their arse from a teakettle were a trial to endure.
