it's mostly prevalent in Zeki and White but I like to take my friends gripes about certain representation/misconceptions and make those major traits in my characters as representation. like for White, I hear my friends frustrations about how people think lesbians are "so tender and sweet and never think about sex" and are still expected to take on motherly roles with their friends and each other- so now I give my lesbian and sapphic friends a little fucked up jack-russell-terrier-like horny lesbian as an offering. I feel kinda lame about Zeki as representation, since yet another "confident feminine gay man" is a drop in the bucket, but I always think it's lame when someone* is gender nonconforming and people insist they Must be in the closet or will come out as trans any day now. As a trans guy, I would like to wear women's clothes occasionally while still being viewed as a man, the same courtesy should be given to cis folks too. His confidence and enjoying being a man is important for the character and to me
(*"someone" being real people, headcanoning fictional characters as trans is typically fine and probably healthy and correct actually)

OCs as animals Tag
I was tagged for this one by @mariahwritesstuff. This one sounds like fun, so I'll keep this train going.
No Pressure Tags: @druidx, @asher-orion-writes, @homesteadchronicles, @warriorbookworm, @mariahwritesstuff, @ashirisu, @thesorcerersapprentice
Rules: Choose any Oc/s and pick an animal that relates to them and why. You can also include images or drawings of your own but don't have to.
I'll be taking some of the cast from Fangthane's Folly for this one because they need a bit of love. Under the cut to save folks' dashes. Also to warn for bugs, cockroaches and snakes because some people just don't want to see the pictures (don't worry I'll pop the warnings in the tags too for anyone that needs to filter for them).
Meredith: It took a while but I finally settled on a Jack Russel terrier. Meredith is a loyal sort and I was loathe to use a dog for her just because of that, but she's tenacious and adaptable so these little fellows do actually fit her remarkably well. Jack Russels are also very stubborn and vocal, both of which are traits Merri shares with this loveable breed
Yoruk: Again, Yoruk is a very loyal individual, but is much more reserved and quiet than his wife. He is hard working and dependable though and very gentle at heart (though he will give as good as he gets if push comes to shove). For these reasons I'm going with the Clydesdale horse for him
Jotunn Raganarsson: As the High Priest of Moradin for Fangthane, Ragnarsson is a very hard-working man. He is very patient and kind, which leads many to suspect he's a bit of a pushover. This is very far from the truth, however. Ragnarsson is a dwarf's dwarf and incredibly stubborn when the situation calls for it. It might seem a little stereotypical, but I'm going with the Highland Cow for Raganarsson
Now for our antagonists. I love all animals, even the ones seen to be icky and evil and I know they have their good qualities. Nevertheless I cannot in good conscience leave the bad guys out of this.
Ionah Copperheart: Ionah is a smart woman. She knows what her connections can get her and uses them to the utmost to get what she wants. She is sneaky and conniving and puts on a façade of gentility to cover up the fact that she's an evil, narcissistic witch. With all that in mind I'm actually going with the Preying Mantis for her. Mostly because of the amount f patience she has to have given the people she's working with.
Skalrd Firetome: More traditionally cunning and duplicitous, Firetome worked his way up the ladder legitimately and hid his true intentions and nature for several centuries before finding the perfect opportunity to strike. For this reason I'm going with the traditional snake for him. More specifically the cottonmouth, or water mocassin, as this snake gapes as a defensive mechanism, which goes with Firetome lying to get out of trouble.
Garl Grim(e)beard: Grimbeard is scum. He is the lowest of the low in terms of bad guys. He is ultimately just a lackey with aspirations of greatness. He is not liked by anyone at all and is very clear about what his goals are because he's a terrible liar. He is just very lucky that others can spin his goals for him because he wouldn't be able to get to where he is in the wip otherwise. He is also a coward and just generally repulsive. Now I am going with a stereotype here, so just to put it out there that I think the animal in question is ten to one hundred times more useful than Grimbeard will ever be. Due to his cowardly nature, which hides a strong sense of self preservation. and general repulsiveness, I'm going with the cockroach for him.
#tw cockroaches#tw preying mantis#tw bugs#tw snakes#aquadestinyswriting#oc tag games#fangthanes folly and the anvils fall#meredith gruksdottir#yoruk bloodvein#jotunn ragnarsson#skarld firetome#garl grimbeard#I finally got around to finishing this one#it was harder than it looked

PET(S): Pigwidgeon "Pig" the owl
FACECLAIM AND/OR DESCRIPTION: George Mackay is who I'll use as an avatar, but no one quite fits the version of Ron in my head. I'm sure there's some obscure model FC out there who would be perfect, but the fact is I just don't care enough to find them. Quick and dirty description then is: very tall, bright red hair, lots and lots of freckles all over his body, a long, straight nose, blue eyes, and an earnest face.
VISUAL REPRESENTATION: If needed I'll use George Mackay, but I don't love using resources.

CLOTHING/STYLE: Having grown up quite poor, Ron didn’t know what to do with the hefty (for him) sum of money being an Auror trainee yielded. He’d never forgotten what it was like to wear poorly-fitted hand-me-downs, so it was unsurprising when he invested in as fine a wardrobe as any he’d had before. It’s not pretentious or gawdy, but he likes to look sharp and he’s now in a financial position to do so.
MANNERISMS:
HABITS:
COPING MECHANISMS: Throwing himself into Auror training with so much ferocity that he crashes when it’s over - if he’s not conscious, he can’t dwell on everything the war took from him. Throw in a little liquor and a little not-unkind avoidance of his family members and you’ve got Ron post-war.

HEADCANONS
In the months following the war, Ron felt a fierce duty to his family. He'd been absent for most of the previous year, after all, and his guilt now kept him in close proximity. He spent most of his time helping George at the joke shop, or just helping George in general, but it often felt like he was single-handedly trying to hold together the pieces of a broken world. He slogged through the summer, hanging in limbo between that self-imposed duty to his family and an overwhelming desire to distance himself from it all. Even after taking up Kingsley on his offer to join the ranks of the Aurors, guilt gnawed at his conscience. There is a constant tug of war inside him, a tension that even the toughest training exercise can't cut; he wants so desperately to help his family, to be there for them, but he hasn't forgotten those draining months after the final battle either. He still technically lives at the Burrow, but the time he spends there conscious or coherent is sparse at best.
Sleep was difficult to come by; June of 1998 came and went and Ron doubted he'd once gotten a good night's sleep. He tried a sleeping draught, following in the footsteps of both George and his mother in that regard, but something about it didn't sit right with him. He slept under the influence of the potion, yes, but he didn't dream. It was nice to block out the nightmares that so often kept him awake, but the good dreams were absent as well and he missed them. An easier solution came in the form of drinking. He split his time that summer between George's flat and the joke shop, his own attic bedroom at the Burrow, and every wizarding pub from Ottery St. Catchpole to London Proper. When he couldn't get out, he found solace in the bottle of Ogden's Olde under his bed. It was a problem, but it never became a problem; Auror training began in the fall, and that provided him with a much healthier way of coping. It turns out that pushing your body and mind to the limit on a daily basis makes it surprisingly easy to fall asleep - and by "fall asleep" I mean "pass out on the nearest horizontal surface." He does enjoy drinking, though, and he has a tendency to overdo it at times - addictive personality and all that. And hanging around with Seamus and Harry, well…They've always talked each other into the worst sorts of trouble, and that hasn't changed.
It was late summer when Kingsley approached him about joining the Aurors. Ron was flattered and taken aback, but he was also embarrassed at how quickly he accepted. He didn't think he could stand hovering in post-war limbo much longer, and training was the perfect outlet. He finally felt important, like an asset to society; if there was anything he wanted, it was to do something to ensure that a war would never happen again, and it didn't get more concrete than hunting down dark wizards. He threw himself into training with more gusto than he'd ever shown for schoolwork, and the closer he gets to becoming a proper Auror (just two short months), the harder he tries. He has always had lofty aspirations (the Mirror of Erised showed us that), and they're finally coming to fruition.
Once Auror training started, Ron started commuting to the Ministry on a regular basis. He had been to London before, had been around muggles plenty of times, but he was equal parts transfixed and flabbergasted the first time he saw a couple of muggle kids riding skateboards (“Cool.”). He told Harry immediately, and not two days later the two were laughing in front of the Burrow, failing miserably at riding the skateboards they’d purchased and tried to bewitch. They were boys being boys, and after all they’d been through they deserved whatever joy and laughter they could get. However, their skills never expanded past mediocre; Ginny was a natural the first time she gave it a whirl, for which she was promptly dismissed by her disgruntled brother (“Look, if you’re not going to fail at this like the rest of us, then fuck off.”).

Mister Cavill, your dog is kinda fat - Chapter 1
Summary: Veterinarian Olivia Tran has zero time for bullshit. After becoming a mom at age twenty three, the one thing she wants is a good life for her daughter Vanessa. Her ex didn’t want anything to do with her nor the baby and she decided that man are officially banned out of her life. But then she meets Henry Cavill at her clinic and her ban slowly starts to crumble apart. Henry on the other hand is looking for one thing: a family. And when he meets Olivia Tran, he finds just that.
Henry Cavill x Olivia Tran (ofc)
Warnings: None
Wordcount: 2.4k
A/N: The beginnings of a new fic! It’s kind of a build up, so there isn’t a lot of Henry Cavill inthis chapter, but the next one is from his pov and more than 4.5k. I hope you like this new story 🤗
Masterlist // Next chapter
For fuck’s sake, I can still smell the fluids from those anal glands I have been popping all day. Even when you wear gloves every single time, that penetrating smell will just stay with you.
After a long day at the clinic, I can finally call it a day. Of course, I’m on call tonight, but other than that, I can relax now. Working as a vet has always been a dream of mine and now, at the ripe age of twenty nine, I have managed to become doctor Olivia Tran, one of the loved veterinarians here.
‘See you tomorrow, Belle,’ I yell to my best friend and other veterinarian at this clinic.
‘You on call tonight?’ Belle asks.
‘I am.’
‘If you need to go, I can’t watch Vanessa tonight,’ she tells me, while she is checking the ears of a pug, who seems to have severe breathing problems from the looks of it. ‘I have a date.’
‘No worries,’ I say to her with a smile. ‘I probably don’t need to go anyways. Hasn’t happened in the past months, so I highly doubt that something will change tonight. Please let me know how your date went tomorrow.’
Belle, the gorgeous brunette with legs for days and blue eyes as big as Rapunzel, flashes me a bright smile. ‘Of course, dear. Give Vanessa a big kiss for me, will you?’
‘Will do.’ I walk out of the clinic, give a sweet Jack Russell a scratch behind his ear and check my watch. I have twenty minutes before I have to pick up Vanessa, but it’s a fifteen minute walk if I hurry and if I just stroll around, it’s twenty minutes. Can I manage to buy myself some cookies or should I wait after I picked her up?
I think I would have a very happy six year old if I waited with the cookies after I picked her up from school.
I bury my hands in the pockets of my coat. Yesterday it was official: the summer has passed and autumn is here. I always love it when I see the green leaves slowly turning orange or brown and cover the pavement with a blanket of crunchy leaves. It’s Vanessa’s favorite season as well, but that’s mostly because it’s her birthday on November 12th.
I never planned on becoming a mother at twenty three. I never really gave it a big thought, the idea of having kids. In the far far far future I might’ve become one, but I always thought I had more cool aunt potential.
The day I found out I was pregnant, I was scared, but since I was in a pretty serious relationship with Wesley for almost three years, the man I thought I’d end up marrying, I figured we would make this work. We would marry, have this kid and live happily ever after, maybe even have a few more.
But Wesley broke up with me when I told him about the pregnancy and that I was going to keep the baby. I went to my parents for comfort, thinking that they and my two brothers would be supportive of this. We got through the time that I was partying all night, getting tattoos and smoked some weed out of my window. I mean, we would be able to handle this right?
But my parents kicked me out when I told them I was pregnant and I was going to keep the baby. ‘But what about your degree?’ I can still hear my mother say those words, but what was maybe the worst thing, was seeing my brothers turning their backs to me. Their literal backs towards me. ‘You worked so hard and you just got a job as a vet,’ my mom began to yell.
To be fair, I was their only hope. My brothers dropped out of high school and are now sort of working in construction, but they can hardly finish a job ever. My mother never worked a day in her life and my father was a lawyer. I told them that I could work something out, with a bit of help of them, but my mother just pushed me out of their house and told me to never bother them again, if I was going to have a kid out of wedlock.
So I had to do it by myself. I had to find a place for me and the baby to stay, but thankfully Belle was already working at the vet and decided that I needed a bit of help. I could stay with her, even after the baby was born. Belle went with me to the ultrasounds and when I went into labor, she was right there with me.
Belle is Vanessa’s one and only aunt and my best friend. When you get pregnant and not only your boyfriend leaves, your family disappears out of your life, you also notice how many people despise you. My friends from college all of the sudden seemed to have fallen off the earth and never checked in with me.
Now I have a happy six year old, a nice home for the two of us and a baby sitter Belle, who is becoming less and less available, since she has discovered the world of Tinder, because she wants a boyfriend.
I hear the bell ring when I step onto the schoolyard. It doesn’t take long before I see my daughter running towards me. Her baby blue coat is hanging open, her backpack in her hand and a rolled paper in the other. She insisted on wearing her boots to school today, but leave it to her to cover them in mud.
Entirely.
I catch her when she jumps in my arms. ‘I missed you, my lovely lady,’ I say to her.
Vanessa peppers my face with kisses, something she always does when I pick her up from school. I brush the hairs out of her face, including the sweet bangs that she insisted on having. Originally she wanted the same haircut as me from when I was the same age as her, but since I have severe traumas of the bowl cut, I had to spare her that and opt for some sweet thin bangs.
‘Mommy,’ she says, ‘I missed you a lot.’
‘Well, you want to go to the store, so we can buy some cookies?’ I ask her. ‘And maybe tonight we can order a pizza.’
‘Yes, yes, yes!’ She gives me a tight hug.
Sometimes I doubt my parenting skills, especially when I look around the schoolyard. I watch those mothers who are housewives, with very handsome husbands and kids that always look formidable and put together and probably only eat fatty snacks on their birthdays. Sometimes I wished I had that: a husband, a man that Vanessa could look up to.
I figured that when my ex Wesley couldn’t provide that, my brothers and father would step in and treat my daughter like they treated me: a princess.
Now I have to do that myself.
It can be tiring, being both the mother and the father for Vanessa, but if I could turn back time, I’d do it all over again.
With Vanessa’s tiny hand in mine, we walk towards the store, to buy some cookies that I desperately craved the entire day I was at work.
Vanessa looks a lot like me. She’s basically my clone. People often stop us, simply to tell us that Vanessa is like a miniature version of me. I always like compliments about my daughter. I mean, she is my world.
When we arrive at home, I help her change into something more comfy. ‘Mommy, can we please have a pajama night?’ Vanessa asks, while I help her out of her dress.
‘It’s four in the afternoon,’ I say, knowing exactly what she wants. ‘You want to wait two hours before you wear your pajamas?’
Vanessa shakes her head. ‘No, I want to wear my pjs now.’ Her bright smile nearly lights up the room. I watch her nose scrunch up as the corners of her mouth curl up, the only trait that she inherited from her biological father. ‘Are you going to wear yours too?’
I don’t have anywhere to go and besides, after all popping all those anal glands today, I desperately want to get out of these clothes. ‘Yes, sweetie, I’m going to wear mine too, but first I’m going to take a shower.’
‘No bath, mommy? Because I like baths.’ Her dark brown eyes start to gleam with enthusiasm. ‘Please, mommy, please.’ She pouts, knowing damn well I can’t say no to that.
≫≫≪≪
The second Vanessa is in bed, I have some time for myself. I love every second we get to spend together, but it’s nice to have a breather every now and then. I stare at my arms, to see how Vanessa has colored in my tattoos. She’s obsessed with them and when she’s in school, she sometimes tries to draw them on her own arms by memory, sometimes even drawing on others when they want to. A few weeks ago, her teacher asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. ‘Well, I want to be two things,’ Vanessa told her. ‘Like my mommy I want to be a vet, because I love animals, but I also want to draw tattoos on people.’
I sit up straight, looking at the drawing she made me today in school. She always makes drawings for me, but they are always the same. She draws a house, with me in it and herself. And outside she draws a dog and a man, with suitcases and moving boxes next to them. ‘Because,’ she explains every single time, ‘one day you meet a nice man who has a dog and he can become my new daddy. A daddy that does want me.’
Belle didn’t agree on me telling Vanessa her real dad didn’t want her, but I figured she needed to know the truth. Her biological father is a low life that disappeared into thin air and didn’t want to be involved in her life.
Vanessa understood, to the extent that was possible, but she really wants a dad, preferably one with a dog. Though she keeps pushing me, I can’t start dating again. Vanessa is the most important person in the world and men simply don’t fit into this—in my head—perfect picture. Vanessa is my life and men are big fat losers, so I don’t need them. I don’t want them, because the chance of them getting tired of maybe me, maybe Vanessa and leaving, is something I can’t risk.
Vanessa already lost her real father, what if a man that becomes really important to her, leaves too?
At around eleven I drag myself to bed, placing my work phone beside me. I hate being on call, but like I told Belle, I didn’t have a call in months, so I think I’m good.
I’m dreaming about Keanu Reeves (the only man on earth that I’d break my no man ban for) and how he takes me out on a lovely date, has Vanessa on his lap and helps her to cut her food, when the phone starts to ring.
‘Are you fucking kidding me?’ I mutter, before I click on my nightlight. It’s three in the fucking morning. I don’t want this. ‘Animal Clinic Westside, doctor Olivia Tran, how may I help you?’ I say when I pick up the phone.
‘Hello, I’m terribly sorry for calling at this hour, but my dog is vomiting and I see some blood in it.’ Oh, poor man, he sounds so panicked. ‘He collapsed and is breathing really heavily and I don’t know what to do.’
I sit up straight in bed and rub my eyes, as I try to be as alert as I can on this early morning. ‘Sir, it’s okay. Did your dog eat anything out of the ordinary today?’
Not that I know of.’
‘You think it’s possible for you to come to the clinic? I’d like to see the dog.’
‘Of course, of course.’ The man on the other side of the line has such a lovely and deep voice. He could become a voice actor or a narrator like Morgan Freeman. If liquid gold had a voice, it would sound like this.
‘I hope it’s not too much to ask, but could you take some of the vomit with you? Especially the part with some blood. I’d like to check it.’
‘I’ll bring it with me, of course.’
‘What kind of breed is your dog, sir?’ I ask, while writing it all down on a piece of paper.
‘An American Akita. His name is Kal.’
I don’t think he ever went to our clinic, I think to myself.
‘I’ll be at the clinic in about forty minutes, mister…’ I say, hoping that this man will say his name.
‘Cavill,’ he quickly says. ‘And I can be at the clinic in about an hour.’
That name does sound kind of familiar though, but I could’ve sworn that this man isn’t in our database. Maybe I went to college with him or to high school?
After we hang up the phone, I quickly get out of bed. I opt for a pair of tight fitted black leggings and an oversized sweater (after I put on a bra, because who knows mister Cavill is handsome and my nipples don’t want to keep that a secret) and I slip on some white sneakers. I put my hair into a bun. I freeze when I’m moisturizing my face.
I kind of forgot I had a daughter. I don’t like the idea of bringing Vanessa with me, especially since it’s three in the morning and she’s asleep, but then I realize that tomorrow it’s Saturday. Plenty of time for her to catch up on her sleep and plenty of time for me to feel less guilty about dragging her out of her dreams.
‘Sweetie,’ I whisper, when I gently wake her up. ‘Mommy has to go to the clinic, but you can’t stay at aunt Belle tonight, so you’re going with me to work.’
Vanessa was a groggy mess when I nudged her awake, but when she realizes she can go with me to work, her eyes light up. ‘Really?’
‘Yes, someone has a sick doggy, that needs to be taken care of.’
She gets up out of her bed and I help her with her socks, though she is perfectly capable of doing so herself. ‘You’re gonna save a doggy?’ Vanessa asks.
‘I’m going to try.’
I hand her a thick vest and while she puts it on, she says: ‘You’re a hero, mommy.’
With a smile on my face, I softly pinch her cheek. ‘I guess I am.’

Hair: dark brown Eye color: hazel, mostly looks brown Height: 5′10″ (i know gregg is 5′9″ but pls, let him have this 1 inch) Distinctive features: dimples on both cheeks & a bright, puppy-like smile, a posh British accent that can either make you facepalm on how cheesy it can sound or swoon with how charming it can get
he was born in America, where his father met his mum during a business trip. he is an architect while she is an interior designer. they eventually got married in England where his got mum relocated to. which means he grew up in England for the most part (simply bc i couldn’t... give up... gregg’s accent ljkljkl)
named after his grandfather, Sir Norman Robert Foster, it is needless to say that there are a lot of expectations for James. Norman Foster is a big name in the architecture industry, for founding the current leading firm in the UK, Foster + Partners.
James has known constant pressure all his life, and has learned to live and thrive under it. as a young lad, he was expected to be sporty, leader material, and excel academically. James isn’t the type to be disobedient, and will do whatever it takes to make his family happy. so while other kids are out enjoying their summers and going on imaginative adventures, james was stuck in his home being tutored advanced lessons and learning how to properly kick a ball. since the popular sport in England was football (soccer), that’s what he was taught to play, but also eventually grew to love.
his parents got divorced just before his senior year in high school. he was given the decision to either stay with his mum or dad. he chose to stay with his mum, despite having to uproot his life in England and move all the way to America just before graduating high school. he was the only close living family his mum had left, and he wasn’t about to leave her all alone across the world. he still stays in contact with his family in England though, and goes back during breaks or summers.
it was probably his first act of rebellion ever, to choose to study at a university in the States, and not even one his family would’ve chosen for him. but it didn’t matter to him as much as he thought it would have. it felt pretty damned good to be making his own decisions.
though his family is a large factor in him taking architecture, he genuinely loves the discipline. he loves how it requires one to be both creative and logical, whereas most people are used to being one or the other.
old habits die hard, and overachieving is in his blood. he is just about involved in everything. student politics, sports, frat, academics, and outreach programs ??? plus he’s smart, kind, good-looking, and rich ??? (goddamnit i hate him,, i can never be him) the only downside is that he isn’t part of omega chi delta.
he got recruited to lambda in his first year ! still feeling giddy over defying his family, what was one more act of disobedience, honestly? he could almost hear his dad nagging him that if he were ever to join a frat in hworth, it should be the best, aka omega chi. surprisingly, he doesn’t really care. as with almost everything, he has grown to love the frat and would actually die for them. think of him as the big brother figure in lambda that everyone can rely on & runs to so he could fix things. he’s the philanthropy chair & IFC representative for a reason—he has a big heart and has a lot of love to give, plus he wants what’s best for lambda.
probably needs to take a break, but is honestly stubborn as hell to do so. his logic is that since he has been doing this circus of activities for three years and he has yet to crash and burn, why would it start now? (god someone pls save him !!!)
here are some additional fun (but important!) facts:
he isn’t really into parties, but would go to it for the sake of building & sustaining connections. he mostly just wants to rest during his free time (i mean, who could blame him ??)
his time management skills are on fire though ! downside is that he doesn’t have as much fun as others do since he is always trying to hold back
he is left-handed
he currently has three dogs. a black & white border collie named clyde, a yellow labrador retriever named coco, and a black & silver german shepherd named caesar. he has already lost two dogs—a red retriever named rusty, and a jack russell terrier named rocket
he is hella good at pencil sketching but has never been the best at painting
he freaking loves maths and sciences (i could never !!!) his brain is simply wired & trained for it
a natural-born leader !
he had his bar mitzvah at the Western Wall in Jerusalem
he plans to take his postgraduate degree at either MIT or University College London
can get alpha-like/domineering at times (especially in relationships) but he is a generally nice dude
believes in true love and all that. has always respected and been sweet to those he had been involved with, fling or serious relationships
if you’ve made it till the end, thank you so much for reading through, angel! here are some of his wanted connections ! I’m pretty much open to anything for James, and so if none catches your fancy, we shall brainstorm together ;)
#hworth:intro#heya loves!#it is so great to be here jdflgjlk#please do hit the like button if u want to plot with the overachieving golden white boi james!#or if you simply want to be friends with me that's fine too c:

Whatever Happened to Joanne Russell?
Oh boy, rambling about a character only a select few knows about are we?
So as you probably know, comic book heroes often have a handful of love interests. Batman who have characters like Catwoman, Talia al-Ghoul, Barbara Gordon and justice itself, right?
Well Jack Ryder/Creeper is an odd case....
If I were to describe Jack Ryder’s (and by extension Creeper’s) love life, I would bluntly say that it freaking sucks. This isn’t too surprising if you look into it, as neither one of them have such a positive reputation with their peers and their questionable behavior may be a turn off. Creeper’s terrible flirting skills doesn't help either, no matter how hard he tries.
So has he ever had a significant other?
I guess, but they are all pretty much exes. There have been four women in Jack’s life I guess you could call “love interests”. Let’s go through them!
1# Vera Sweet
I’m just gonna say it now.
Jack and Vera have a very weird relationship.
If you look up profiles of her then there’s a decent chance it will label her as a love interest, like her wikipedia page for example. This is also mentioned on her Comic Vine page but it does also point out the weirdness of it all, as the “love” part did not really become official until the Creeper 2006 mini-series (like almost 40 years after her debut in 1968). There she is established as Jack’s ex-girlfriend.
So what was she prior to that?
Back in Beware the Creeper Vera was more like an obstacle, someone that Jack found annoying and tried to avoid most of the time. Not much of an love interest really, but it is possible that she would've been like Gwen Stacy - starting off disliking Jack but ends up liking him later. Unfortunately, as Beware only lasted six issues, this development never came to pass.
Then there’s also this panel from issue #6
I’m pretty sure that this was added to say “yeah Vera was supposed to be the love interest, but we didn't get that far”.
One amusing thing I noticed about her in this series is hat she is a bit of an attention seeker, doing things for publicity and the like. This is a trait Jack kind of absorbed in some later stories, for better or for worse.
Anyway, what about after this series? Well she had a small cameo in Brave and the Bold #178 at Jack’s current work place, and the two seemed to be on better terms with each other. Until the end I guess when Jack steals the anchorman job (to expose the bad guy) she wanted. I say “I guess” because we don’t really see her confront Jack about it, only her angry reaction.
Vera has also apparently dropped the whether-girl job she had back in Beware and is a reporter here. Why I don’t know. She also feels a bit...mature(?) when it came to her personality. I can’t explain it but she felt less like a spoiled brat here then in Beware. I’m guessing it is because of her more appropriate reactions and behavior to things.
Next is the Creeper 90′s series and oh boy. This is the series that reveals some very questionable things about their relationship. Like that Vera has apparently stabbed Jack at one point.
When did that happen?!
Why did that happen?!
Don’t expect Jack to tell because he has no reaction to it. No fill in for the reader, no comment, no nothing! It is like he has no problem with it. Did Creeper’s healing factor cause him to see stab wounds as small potatoes or what? Like a “eh, I’ve been through worse” kind of attitude? On top of that he also mentions later that Vera put him in a body cast for six weeks for calling her “Swetowski”, which is apparently her real last name. How great.
Later after Jack had his shower, he walks out without tying his bathrobe, leaving him completely exposed. Now remember that they weren’t explicitly stated to have been in a relationship in the past until the 2006 reboot, unless you want to see Jack’s “I used to let you borrow my toothbrush” line as proof or something. So Jack is basically walking out naked in front of a previous co-worker, without a care in the world.
Even better. Not only is Jack apparently fine with Vera seeing him nude, it’s not even Vera he meets outside, it’s his shape shifting nemesis Proteus who has taken her form. Even when Jack gets suspicious he still doesn't tie his freaking bathrobe.
I’m not sure what this says about him, but Vera later travels to Paris, leaving her out of the series until issue #10 when she comes home and comments on Jack cleaning the apartment and being polite as him “finally snapping”. Also that kiss on the cheek is the most romantic moment these two have shared so far. How this meeting would have gone if Jack wasn’t under the influence of the “wonder drug” he was taking at the time i have no idea.
So we finally get to the 2006 mini-series, that comic that finally established them as exes, and what caused the break-up?
Cheating! On both fronts even!
Granted they seem to be on a bit better terms here as Vera lightly smacking his cheek is the most violent thing she does to him, something i doubt pre-Infinite crisis Vera “I will put you in a cast” Swetowski would have done if she caught Jack cheating on her.
We also get some scenes with Vera as she admits that she still likes him so its not like she hates the guy or anything. She even gets jealous when she finds red hair in Jack’s apartment, thinking he has a new girlfriend.
The funny thing is that the red hair from that “red headed tramp” she talks about actually belongs to Creeper, or his red boa to be precise.
Unfortunately the same dedication isn’t replicated on Jack’s part, but to be fair he was kind of caught up in a pretty intense situation. Like getting along with Creeper, because it’s “we” now, something Creeper often repeats in this series.
Well as this relationship triangle is looking weirder and weirder its probably best to close this part as Vera sadly hasn't appeared as of late. Most likely because Jack Ryder/Creeper isn't a very prominent character in the DCU, and when either one appears they are usually a supporting character, giving Creeper related characters even less of a chance to show up.
2# Vicki Vale
Maybe Vera worrying about a redhead wasn’t too far off, as in the event Bruce Wayne: The Road Home we learn that Jack and Vicki Vale apparently have been together at some point. When did that relationship take place? Who knows! But they seem to be on pretty decent terms, as Vicki even calls Jack when she has a problem. Jack also calls her “Red”, because that’s the only nickname a redhead is allowed to have in the DCU I guess.
I’m not sure who Jack is referring to here though, but it’s probably Vicki as they’re supposed to talk about journalistic ethnics here and Jack talks like she doesn't care about the people she writes about. Also her reaction may also indicate that Jack’s remark was directed towards her. If that was supposed to indicate that she cheated on him or something i have no clue because unfortunately, the Outsiders issue of this arc is the only time these two interact in a comic so we are still a bit in the dark about them. I’m kind of surprised that they haven’t interacted more often as they are Gotham’s most prominent reporters after all.
3# “Furious” Fran Daye
To be honest, I was a bit conflicted about including Fran here as she was basically just a Vera replacement during the World’s Finest comics Steve Ditko made during the 1970s, Fran’s debut year being in 1978 with World’s Finest #249, but if Comic Vine feels the need to call her a love interest I guess that leaves me with no choice.
Like Fran’s Comic Vine page says, her and Jack’s relationship is pretty much just a role-reversal of Jack and Vera’s relationship, especially the one they had back in Beware the Creeper. Instead of Vera annoying Jack, it’s Jack annoying Fran, mostly by being a troll.
Unless I missed something, I picked up little to no romantic tension between them. Unless you go with the “the boy shows that he likes the girl by being a dick to her” or the “main guy hooks up with the main girl” logic they don’t appear to love each other at all. They’re more like rivals and it sure is intense as Jack often drags Fran into his antics when he tries to catch the villain of the week, something Fran often complains about. Also, thanks to Ditko’s art style she often looks like she wants Ryder dead or something.
As Fran sticks to these World’s Finest stories we haven't heard from her since, actually making me believe that Fran kind of got absorbed into Vera Sweet’s character as the two where kind of similar. This could also explain Vera’s personality shift from spoiled brat to lady with buttons you don’t want to push.
#4 Joanne Russell
Well here it is! The main course of this thing. That one that this is named after. So who is Joanne Russell?
Well we can start by going through her introduction in Adventure Comics #445 from 1976.
It’s a pretty simple story about Jack trying to solve some kind of murder story occurring in “Humboldt Institute”, with Ms. Russell being one of the victims there. We learn that she works as a physical therapist and that she is paralyzed waist down after a very strange car accident. We also learn some other stuff, but let’s save that for now.
Jack jumps the gun after a interview and declares it to be a murder case to boost ratings. This upsets Ryder’s boss who tells him to find evidence for his claim or the hospital will sue him. It especially doesn’t help when his boss later tells him find evidence that can pin-point the Creeper as the culprit - because everyone hates Creeper, you see.
Since he is the main character it turns out he was right, and that a strange robot, with the very threatening name “Manfred”, is actually wandering around killing people, and Joanne seems to be a special target.
As the story progresses, it turns out one of Joanne’s colleges named Vernon Maddox is the creator of Manfred, and has telekinetic powers which is how he controls the robot.
Why does he want Joanne dead? Well he doesn’t really, but his subconscious has other plans and commands the robot to kill Joanne while he’s sleeping.
After that the story goes pretty straight forward and it’s just Jack trying to keep Joanne safe from Manfred. But then we come to the ending.
Joanne learns that she too has telekinetic powers, and with that, she regains the ability to walk and that is how Manfred gets defeated. She and Creeper walk into the sunset or whatever, the end. During the course of the last part Joanne managed to figure out Jack’s secret identity, but she promises to keep it a secret.
But what is that?
You can interpret this in a few ways i’m sure, but to me it sounds like DC wanted people to write if they wanted Creeper to have a love interest or not. If we say that was the intention, then oh boy, the idea of Creeper having an significant other must have sparked some kind of uproar or something, because Joanne’s very next appearance in World’s Finest Comics #252 (1978) begins like this.
The sucky part is that Jack gets over it really quickly, just swears revenge by finding her killer (which turns out to be her assistant), and that’s pretty much it! Never mentioned again!
But for real though, what the hell really happened here? I doubt I can solve this mystery, but I can offer you some speculations I have about this (because I have no life) and let you come to a conclusion yourself.
So I did take a look at the letters that came in subsequent issues of Adventure Comics to see if someone expressed some kind of dislike for Joanne. I don’t think I saw any, but I did notice some people not being too keen on the story itself for various reasons. Not to say it got no praise in these letters or anything, I’d say it was about 50/50, but still.
This message outright states that the story didn’t do so well..
Maybe that’s why Joanne got the axe? Because she was associated with a story that got a mixed reception? I dunno, that sounds kind of stupid to me, but the comic book industry chooses to do some dumb stuff a lot sometimes so what do I know.
Anyway, what about another suggestion? So the Adventure Comics three-parter was written by Martin Pasko, while the World’s Finest Comic stories were written by Creeper’s creator Steve Ditko. Maybe he didn’t want Creeper to have a love interest so that’s why he killed her off?
According to this letter, Ditko is pretty speedy when it comes to writing. Maybe that resulted in him not realizing that Jack and Joanne where supposed to be a bit closer then how he portrayed it as? Because he didn’t do a full background check on Joanne, he thought she just was some random character who just happened to know about Creeper’s true identity so he thought “Oh I can write a murder story about this!” or something? And because he was the creator of Creeper, DC just let him kill her?
So we have five possibilities.
DC getting a bunch of angry letters from people who hated the idea of Creeper having a significant is still on the table. If they got them, I doubt DC would’ve actually added such messages to the comic’s letterers page.
The mixed reception of her introductory story got her axed.
Mr. Dikto didn’t like her/the idea of Creeper having a love interest he didn’t create, so he killed her to end a possible relationship.
Ditko didn’t get the memo so he thought Joanne was some throwaway character he could use in a murder mystery story.
DC just kind of lost interest in it and dropped the relationship.
Whatever the reason was, it certainly effected The Creeper later as he never has had a present-day love interest ever again after this. Seriously, all the previous ladies are all his exes - none are in a relationship with Jack in present-day but Joanne (sort of). It’s like DC established some kind of “no-love-interest for-Creeper-clause”. All Jack is allowed to have are exes and that’s it! Also, because all of these stories mainly takes place before Creeper became his own persona (which is why I used both Creeper and Jack’s names a bit interchangeably here), you can actually make the argument that Creeper has no love life at all. All of the exes, plus Joanne, only really interact with Jack and when Joanne was with Creeper, it was still technically Jack because Creeper didn’t officially split from Jack until the 2006 series. And even then, Creeper didn’t talk or interact with Vera in that one, Jack did. The closest we got of Creeper having a love interest was when he went after Harley Quinn in BTAS, but that sure didn’t carry over to the comics where the two haven’t even officially met each other.
There is Serene, but I doubt people are going to counts her as a “love interest” for special reasons. Does Maxima count as a Superman love interest? She is probably the closest equivalent I can think of, but I’m not very good at the Superman mythos.
Anyway, I thought Joanne had the potential to be pretty interesting supporting character if given some time to develop, and could’ve been a fun love interest to Jack. Even if her being his girlfriend maybe didn’t sound so hot for some people, couldn’t she at least have been his friend or something? I think Jack and Creeper could use some because they barely have any. The fact she is rarely ever mentioned makes me kind of sad because I did kind of want to see more of her, but it’s highly unlikely DC remembers her when Creeper himself doesn’t get the spotlight very often.
I have probably spent too much time on this.

∇ patronizing: he never means to be, but sometimes woodam can come off as a bit patronizing, especially to younger people. sometimes he forgets that not everyone younger than him is a child and that they are capable of doing things they are assigned. this trait came out a lot during idol producer. he’s noticed it a couple of times, but he still slips up.
∇ untrusting: maybe his lack of trust in others is what causes his patronizing personality. besides his group mates and close friends, it takes him a lot to be able to trust somebody. he’s always wary of new people, even though he’ll always put on a friendly face.
⟹ history:
∇ family life: woodam’s childhood was a hectic one. he was born and raised in hong kong to korean parents. woodam’s mother is an international businesswoman, meaning her job moves her around the world all the time. when woodam turned eight, his mother’s job moved them to seattle, washington. he went to school in the states for five years before his mother’s business moved them to seoul. due to him traveling everywhere with his parents, the three of them have a very tight and trusting bond. both of his parents are very proud of their son for achieving his dreams.
∇ predebut: woodam’s been all over the world in a short amount of time, meeting a ton of different people. somewhere along the line, he thought to himself it would be cool to be known internationally -- on a larger scale. often he would just daydream about being a famous singer or performer. he didn’t actually decide to take it seriously until he moved to seoul. the idol scene appealed to him greatly. his parents placed him in dancing and singing lessons shortly after. eventually, he was cast by hbh at an audition.
woodam was one of the few early hbh trainees that had a strong background in dancing and singing before being accepted, so he was basically confirmed for debut once he was signed. regardless, he still knew he had to be the best he could for debut. he trained hard for a year before being placed in vice’s final line up.

Future Shock
In Altered Carbon, Dichen Lachman harnesses her passion to brave a dystopian world.
Dichen Lachman sits behind the front desk in the Palm Springs Art Museum lobby, her eyes loosely shut as a makeup artist dusts gold pigment across her lids. She’s wearing Ugg boots; her hair is tousled. Despite the 6 a.m. call time, she declines a coffee and instead reaches for an old-fashioned doughnut hole. Lachman (whose first name is pronounced Dee-chen) is poised but low-key, nowhere near the fiery intimidator she portrays in her latest project, the Netflix original series Altered Carbon.
The museum is closed today, quiet save for crew chatter and the clang of gown-draped hangers on the stylist’s rolling rack; art hulks off the walls in the shadows of unlit corridors. Following months of stunt work, emotionally taxing scenes, and 16-hour days on set, the stillness is welcome. Lachman spent the summer in Vancouver, British Columbia, where Altered Carbon filmed its first season. Between network events and promotional appearances from São Paulo to Seoul, she’s savoring the post-production time off at home, just being Mom. Mathilda turns 3 in May, and her favorite things are scribbling, Sia music videos, and the family dog, Whisky. Deep love for family is an attribute the 36-year-old actress shares with her character, Rei. Perhaps the only trait they share, she says — that, and a fondness for action.
When it comes to that devotion, Lachman refers to a full-body, teeth-gritting sensation, a compulsion to hug tightly, to fuse, to be together forever. Rei takes the sentiment to an extreme, but Lachman relates. “That whole idea that I’ll just eat it,” she says, in her soft Australian drawl, which she dropped for the role. “Like I say to my daughter sometimes, ‘I just want to eat you up, I love you so much.’ ”
When we catch up by phone after the museum shoot, a few weeks before Altered Carbon’s premiere, she delves deeper into the idea of eating one’s feelings and shares a story about her four-legged childhood friend, a Jack Russell terrier named Singhi.
“When I was leaving Adelaide to pursue acting in Sydney, I found two of her little furs on my jacket,” she recalls. “I didn’t want to throw them away because I felt like that was throwing my dog away. I didn’t want to keep them because I thought I would lose them. So I swallowed the two little dog furs. I imagined they’d be absorbed into my body and we’d kind of be a part of each other.”
“When I was leaving Adelaide to pursue acting in Sydney, I found two of her little furs on my jacket. I didn’t want to throw them away because I felt like that was throwing my dog away.” Dichen Lachman
Lachman had shrugged off the role of Reileen Kawahara when she didn’t hear back from casting for four months. It was an uneventful lead-up. She received sides, sans any contextual clues to the plot, and submitted a self-taped video audition.
Then she got the call.
“What is this?” She’d actually forgotten. “There’s no callback? Do they want to see me again?”
“No,” Lachman’s agent told her. “They just want you to do the role.”
“I subsequently found out Laeta was a fan of Dollhouse [2009–2010] and The 100 [2014], so she was familiar with my work,” the actress says. “This is the biggest show I’ve ever been a part of … I just feel lucky to have been a part of it and humbled watching everyone’s work on the show.” The 10-episode, multimillion-dollar series, which became available for streaming Feb. 2, is one of Netflix’s highest-budgeted undertakings yet.
An adaptation of the 2002 cyberpunk novel by Richard Morgan, the first in his Takeshi Kovacs trilogy, Altered Carbon stars Joel Kinnaman as Kovacs (pronounced Ko-vach), a body-swapping soldier summoned to solve a murder in the year 2384. Human consciousness has been digitized and can be “sleeved” into new bodies, establishing a world in which the rich live forever and reprobates evanesce in the dark, debauched underbelly of society.
“It’s woven in such an intricate fashion, you can’t really say the show is just one thing,” Lachman explains. “It’s a love story. It’s a murder mystery. It’s action packed. There are all of these philosophical ideas, too. You walk away thinking, If I could live forever, would I even want to?”
Lachman portrays Kovacs’ sister, first appearing in episode one as a figment from his past; she gets her big reveal midway through the season. (At the risk of leaking a spoiler, let’s just say Lachman’s grand entrance is badass, evidential of the months pre-production she spent training in Japanese combat.)
Along with Kinnaman, the cast includes James Purefoy as a “re-sleeved” murder victim in search of his own killer; Martha Higareda as a well-meaning cop intent on closing the case; Renée Elise Goldsberry as Quellcrist, a futuristic Robin Hood hell-bent on quelling elitism; Will Yun Lee as Kovacs’ “birth sleeve”; Ato Essandoh as Kovacs’ gun-slinging ally; and Chris Conner as the personified consciousness of a hotel where Kovacs resides. These characters are complicated and not always who they appear to be. The plot is layered with flashbacks, visions, and alternate virtual-reality dimensions. Timelines seem to intertwine, leading the viewer through a supremely satisfying plot twist to a finale that may very well render all of us worthless until the second season finally airs. According to Kalogridis, “the biggest success is that the whole thing actually makes sense
“We lived with my uncle
and my aunts, my grandfather, and my cousins in a tiny
little apartment. So I had a really …” she pauses,
“colorful childhood, almost
of another era.”
Lachman was born in 1982 in Nepal. At that time, more than 90 percent of the country’s population of 15.7 million worked in agriculture, fielding rice, sugarcane, and oilseeds. Fewer than one in 10 owned a telephone. There was no FM radio. No television stations. Terrain continues to hinder development, but modern-day residents can tune in to Altered Carbon — Netflix extended its streaming services around the globe in 2016.
“I was there until I was about 7,” Lachman recalls. “I think we had Superman, Supergirl, and Police Academy, but no real TV to speak of.” Those VHS tapes were her immersion into science fiction. “We shared electricity with India at the time, so three or maybe four nights out of the week we didn’t even have electricity; mostly it was candlelight. We lived with my uncle and my aunts, my grandfather, and my cousins in a tiny little apartment. So I had a really …” she pauses, “colorful childhood, almost of another era.”
Lachman’s father, a Sydney native, was trekking through the Annapurna region of the Himalayas when he met his would-be wife, originally from Tibet, who was working at her family’s restaurant, a backpacker/tourist destination. “He told a friend, ‘I’m gonna marry that woman,’ ” Lachman recounts of her parents’ meeting. He did. The family moved to Australia when Dichen reached school age. “I remember taking my cousin to school [in Nepal]; it was in a hut, and they were still writing on slate with chalk. My father thought I’d have more opportunities if we were in Australia, so we moved to Adelaide.”
She was 23, living on her own in Sydney and dabbling in low-budget films — not long after the dog-fur incident — when she landed the role of Katya Kinski on Australia’s long-running soap opera Neighbours, a veritable breeding ground for Aussie exports. (Margot Robbie, Chris and Liam Hemsworth, and Russell Crowe are all alums.) A leading role in Joss Whedon’s sci-fi series Dollhouse brought Lachman to California in 2008.
Here, she met husband Maximilian Osinski, who is also an actor in the sci-fi/superhero sphere. Both have appeared in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, albeit in different seasons, and worked together on TNT’s end-of-days drama The Last Ship. Most recently Lachman portrayed alien ringmaster Roulette in Supergirl’s second season. Then Netflix came calling.
“It’s so refreshing because all of the women are such intricate, complex characters,” Lachman says. “They get to be beautiful and fierce, and they hit back. I think this is largely due to Laeta really wanting to show us off like that, to give us more than just a one-note character.”
As Kalogridis puts it, fierce women are the backbone of the show; they promote an underlying message of “owning your body and owning your power.”
Kalogridis has a stellar team, from set decorators and fight choreographers to visual effects artists and cinematographers, whose credits read like a best-of sci-fi list: Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Civil War, War for the Planet of the Apes, Wonder Woman, The Martian. “This was definitely a labor of love for a lot of people,” she shares. “It’s not a movie, but it’s not necessarily what you associate with TV. It’s sort of occupying an interesting in-between space.”
“We were world-building,” adds costume designer Ann Foley, who joined the Altered Carbon team after four years with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., during which time she dressed Lachman. “That was one of the things that really drew me to this project — helping Laeta build and develop this world. One of the challenges when you’re doing anything futuristic is trying to keep it grounded and relatable so people don’t get distracted by the costumes. You don’t want to pull anybody out of the story.”
Foley orchestrates a visual crescendo through the season in ensembles that define each character and provide covert signals to the viewer. Lachman’s commanding wardrobe evolves alongside Rei’s tumultuous story arc; androgynous Samurai- and Sōhei-inspired combat gear metamorphoses into regal, sinewy shapes. Threading together her range of looks is one choice color. “You see so much green in the world where Reileen and Kovacs grew up,” says Foley, referring to scenes filmed in Vancouver’s verdant forest near Widgeon Falls. “You’ll see there will always be an element of that color in her costume, because that helps to inform who the character is.”
In Episode nine, Rei sits with Kovacs and tries to express the intrinsic bond she has always felt with him — a full-body, teeth-gritting sensation, a compulsion to hug tightly, to fuse, to be together forever. Despite hundreds of years of separation, in this world where one’s consciousness can live forever, occupying different bodies, Reileen has never stopped loving her brother. They are family, and family comes first.
“Remember what Mom used to say?” Reileen asks Kovacs as they sit at a small table in a seedy Moroccan-style hookah lounge. She chooses each word slowly and carefully. “ ‘I love you so much, I could eat you up.’ When you were arrested, they put me in an orphanage. All I had left of you was one of your old shirts … They ripped that shirt out of my hands — I can still feel it tearing, the threads still in my fingers. I knew they were going to take those too. So I swallowed them. Just to have something, anything, left of you.”
That passion is the characteristic Kalogridis saw in Lachman and the reason she sought her out for the role. “She brings a real depth and age to a character,” Kalogridis says. “I absolutely believe her version of a woman in her late teens/early 20s and a woman who is 255, 260 … Dichen’s just a very old and interesting soul. She is the warrior goddess.” Lachman has ventured a long way from Kathmandu, from Adelaide, and from Sydney, but as with all of us, the sum of her past experiences defines the person she is today.
“There’s a moment,” Lachman says, “where [my character] discovers Takeshi in the yukuza warehouse, and they just start killing everyone around them. She looks at him and smiles. There was all this action happening around us, and I had to try to cover my laughter because I kept thinking, I can’t believe I’m doing this. Who am I?! I’m originally from a Third World country, then a sleepy little town in Australia, and I’m running around like Rambo on this set with hundreds of stunt guys and people shooting guns at each other …
“This is what I dreamed about.”

A Man and His Dogs
In a fascinating two-part documentary, Martin Clunes sets off on a global adventure to discover how close the domestic dog is to its ancestor, the wild wolf. The Doc Martin and Men Misbehaving star take a wry and witty look at why we are prepared to share our houses with dogs who are genetically still 99,8 per cent like wolves. The actor explores the ancient ancestry of domestic dogs and discovers why their relationship with humans has been so successful. Travelling across the globe, he celebrates the diversity of our canine companions and unravels the links that have made man and beast inseparable for 15,000 years. Martin Clunes is passionate about hounds. It is an eagerness that has inspired him to embark on a quest to discover the origins of man's friend. An epic, dramatic and unforgettable adventure; this heart-warming show follows Martin from the Scruffts Hound show in the UK, all the method to America, Australia, and Africa's wilderness. ahead the way, he meets many of the 399 recognised dog breeds around the world, from designer breeds to working dogs
Clunes takes an evolutionary journey around the world to visit a variety of breeds, including a pack of wolves tucking into a stag dinner in the Rocky Mountains, dingoes in the Australian Outback, and Jack Russell terriers displaying their prowess as rat catchers in the English countryside. As he interacts with these animals, Clunes explains how most dog breeds have come into existence only recently, due to human interference. Over the course of this enjoyable two-part program, he examines the pack mentality and behavioural similarities still shared by domestic dogs, wild dogs and wolves, unearthing the traits that allowed for the mutually beneficial relationship between humans and dogs to develop. Martin tackles his journey with passion, warmth and his own inimitable humour. This emotionally charged programme is an absolute must for any dog lover. He concludes his two-part documentary with a look at man's relationship with his best friend. He considers how dogs' abilities have been harnessed to good effect in pursuits ranging from tracking and herding, to assisting the police and disabled people. Martin also explores how selective breeding has damaged the health of many breeds, and concludes by asking what would happen if dogs simply walked away from the relationship While I had a hard time deciphering the exact overriding theme of this show, I did have a good time watching it. It seemed as if it mostly consisted of a wider variety of dog-related topics that might be interesting for dog lovers. Martin Clunes travels about the world exploring such things as: sheepdogs working with their owner, how we over-pamper dogs, the evolution of the bulldog from a useful animal to an unhealthy freak due to fads which ended up harming this and other breeds, as well as a visit to Tanzania to see some African wild dogs up close. All in all, very interesting even if a tad disjointed, made easy to watch by Clunes' pleasant personality and easy-going manner. Watching Arthur, his black Lab, at Obedience Class and shows is hysterical! The photography is excellent and the encounters with the wolves are breathtaking.

Rampage or Rock, Ape, Lizard...and a Really Big Wolf
Well, Rampage was the most fun I’ve had at the cinema in a long time. This could be thanks, in part, to having absolutely zero expectations, but I have to give credit where credit’s due, Rampage was just a really good laugh. It was unashamedly a stupid film, but didn’t - for the most part - fall prey to the many sexist tropes that unfortunately seem to come with B-movies.
*Rampage Spoilers Follow*
Although Rampage is basically about big animals smashing stuff, with a sub-plot of Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) and a massive gorilla being bros, there was a female lead. Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) features as a capable scientist and relentless investigator, used as a scapegoat in a vast corporate conspiracy, who is determined to uncover the truth, right the wrongs that her research has been used for and clear her name. It is always wonderful to see a talented black actress take the lead in anything, especially in the genre of monster movies, which is usually dominated by swooning blonds. In alarming and spectacular news, at no point did her shirt become tactically torn - despite Kate surviving a helicopter crash - and she doesn’t snog the male lead at the end! Woohoo! Kate is introduced in a way that I feel is usually reserved for male characters; she is someone who’s fallen on hard times and is struggling to get her life back together. So, when we meet her, she is woken up late by a phone call, stumbles out of bed, throws some clothes over the underwear she was sleeping in and drinks something out of a cup that was just lying around. Whilst this is obviously not a positive portrayal of a woman, it could be a realistic one, and it’s always interesting to see female characters being given the opportunity to display stereotypically male behaviours. People aren’t straightforward and we don’t all react the same way to problems. At least it makes a difference from women being shown watching sad romance movies and eating ice cream out of the tub as their coping mechanism. Also, Kate is given plenty of time to showcase her many talents and positive attributes as the film progresses.
One of her great traits is that she continually calls Davis out on his shit. Firstly, when he and government agent Harvey Russell (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) square up for a round of macho intimidation, she interjects, “Let’s all take a breath…Or we can all get in each other’s faces and see who’s the toughest.” In addition, when Davis describes his ludicrous plan to fly a helicopter down a collapsing building as, “We just need to get enough lift to stay on top of the building as it falls, you know, just like riding an avalanche,” Kate replies with the only sane response, which is, “No, I don’t know!” There’s no implicit, doe-eyed trust in Davis’ machismo methods and madcap schemes, all of that has to be earned.
As well as an abundance of common sense, Kate also displays a number of practical skills, such as using her brain - not just brute strength - to smash a window without hurting anyone and pulling off some impressive hacking, even if it is very Hollywood silly. Therefore, Kate acts as a good counterpoint to Davis’ brawn and emotional behaviour as far as animals are concerned; she is an intelligent and rational scientist, as well as an exceedingly sensible and pragmatic human being.
Whilst Kate has to share the limelight with Davis as the hero, the antagonist of Rampage was undoubtedly a woman. Claire Wyden (Malin Åkerman) was a superb B-movie villain and mastermind. Whilst culpability was technically divided with her brother Brett (Jake Lacy), he was portrayed as an almost Shakespearian fool; comically sweating and stress eating pop tarts - another example of supposedly traditional coping mechanisms being gender swapped. Claire was two-dimensionally evil - the first thing we hear her say is, “Either you come home with my research, or you don’t come home at all,” to an astronaut on an exploding space station. Usually, this would be a bone of contention for me, but this is a B-movie, baddies aren’t supposed to be complex. I think it’s enough of a victory that she is the vastly more competent sibling by a million miles, the Brain to her brother’s Pinky if you will. Claire remains cool, collected and in control while Brett falls apart. Naturally, she doesn’t survive this - Rampage is a monster movie after all, of course she is gobbled up by a giant gorilla, what else did you expect? The factor to consider when weighing up sexism is if it’s something that only affects one gender, and in this case, the answer is no. Brett is also subjected to a gruesome comedy death; his is in fact much more visceral, he is squashed flat in a bloody mess by falling debris. So, in the eyes of Rampage at least, characters seem to be judged by their deeds, not their gender.
Two minor named female characters remain; the first is the aforementioned astronaut, Dr. Kerry Atkins (Marley Shelton). Whilst we only briefly see her before her escape pod explodes in the vacuum of space, she shows great courage and willingness to endanger herself for a greater cause. For someone who’s just a device to get some canisters to land on a bunch of animals, she is shown to be very strong in her short time on screen, it’s a shame she was killed for such an arbitrary plot point.
The second background female character is Amy (Breanne Hill), a colleague or possibly student of Davis. Amy is a bit more of a dilemma, as she is portrayed as much more capable and calm in the face of danger than her male counterpart, Connor (Jack Quaid). However, she does flirt in a really gross way with Davis, pretty much throwing herself at him and saying that she wants to learn about “submission techniques.” On the other hand, Connor is also portrayed as a bit of a reprehensible idiot, making up adventure stories to impress Amy and coming out with some fairly offensive white saviour bullshit. It could be that both of these characters simply serve to make Davis look like an all-round wonderfully good person, but a woman offering herself up to him sexually is always going to come off as creepy and seems unnecessary.
Overall, most of the women in this dumb movie are surprisingly confident and capable. They may play up to stereotypes here and there, but they’re character based ones - such as pragmatic scientist and megalomaniacal villain - rather than ones involving gender. Mostly, it was just really fun to have a guilt free laugh at a silly B-movie without having to bludgeon the bit of my brain that thinks about the representation of women into silence.
And now for some asides:
When Dwayne Johnson choked that guy out he says, “That’s a big arm, don’t fight it, sleepy time.” I really hope he talks about his body like that in real life.
Also he has like five had signals that communicate the whole of the English language? Amazing.
I really related to that guy saying, “I’ve started using vegan deodorant, I smell like guacamole.” I just had to put some vegan shampoo in the bin because it made me retch, please make things that smell nice and aren’t evil!

HOW DO THEY FEEL ABOUT THEIR FAMILY?: he loves them, they gave up a lot for him to be able to play exy and none of them asked for the situation that they found themselves in. however, he never really felt like a member of his own family--he went unnoticed until he wasn’t there to take care of his younger siblings or bring in a paycheck of some kind, and then there was a problem. when he came back to oklahoma after the overdose it was just so much worse--life had continued while he was away and what little connection he felt to the lives of his siblings or his mother felt completely severed. he was a stranger who was trying to insert himself where he wasn’t wanted in his own eyes.
HOW DOES THEIR FAMILY FEEL ABOUT THEM?: casey was all his mother had to lean on when his dad left, even though he was only eight years old at the time. he was the person that she vented to, the shoulder that she cried on, the person that she relied on to pick up the slack. when he showed a talent for exy she began to see him less as a son and more as an investment--this is how she was going to get out of the trailer park, this was how she was going to afford new clothes for her children and how she could stop working two jobs. when he almost died on the court at usc that investment slipped away--he was a broken and angry young man that she didn’t know anymore and she was exactly where she was before. jack resents him because when casey left to play for ohio state all the problems that he was shouldering fell on jack’s shoulders, and where jack was always there for casey to vent to--casey wasn’t there for him in return. he wanted a clean break when jack needed him the most. the rest of his siblings don’t really know what to make of him. the younger ones in particular, hardly know anything about him.

DESCRIPTION OF THEIR BEDROOM: he fought tooth and nail for a bed close to the window, because the light was best there. he’s learning to be chaotic after spending his childhood moving his stuff out of everyone’s way--he has art supplies all over and his clothes are hardly ever put away. he tries to get a poster from every concert he goes to, and he has a kevin day poster and a nicky hemmick poster.
05/ THIS OR THAT
INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT?: he goes back and forth, he’s an extrovert who since the overdose has developed more introverted tendencies. OPTIMIST OR PESSIMIST?: optimist mostly. LEADER OR FOLLOWER?: he’s spent most of his time at palmetto up to this point being a leader, but he’s starting to want to be more of a leader again like he used to be. CONFIDENT OR SELF-CONSCIOUS?: confident on the exy court, self-conscious off of it. CAUTIOUS OR CARELESS?: cautious PASSIONATE OR APATHETIC?:passionate BOOK SMARTS OR STREET SMARTS?: street smarts! he hardly payed attention in school, he was obsessed with exy. COMPLIMENTS OR INSULTS?: compliments, but he’s not afraid to insult if it’s called for.
06 / FAVORITES
FAVORITE COLOR: any shade of blue FAVORITE CLOTHING STYLE/OUTFIT: his two favorite outfits are ratty black sweats, no shoes, no shirt, and a snapback, and jeans ripped in the knees, a flannel shirt, and a white t-shirt. FAVORITE BANDS/SONGS/TYPE OF MUSIC: he loves pop punk and never got out of his emo phase--would willingly die for pete wentz. he used to be really opposed to country music because it reminded him of oklahoma, but since joel likes it he finds himself humming it more and letting himself be pulled into dancing to it. FAVORITE MOVIES: fight club, captain america the winter soldier, batman vs. superman, the lord of the rings trilogy. FAVORITE BOOKS: he had to read on the road in high school and that’s the only book he’s ever really liked. he liked the idea of not staying in one place for too long. The apartment is clean, the cats share a litter box, and they have a window to watch the street from. My partner and I are gone during the day for work, but we're usually home at night and the cats are given fresh water and food daily (although they are good with automatic feeders as well). Ares's Current Family: Our family currently consists of Ares and Willow (our two cats) and a Jack Russell terrier named Harper. Ares's Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities? Ares loves little mouse toys and things that he can chase; he also is very social and loves playing with other cats. He enjoys toys on strings as well. He eats mostly dry food, and doesn't seem too interested in human food. He likes to sit up high and observe things, or chill in places that make him feel safe (like a box). Cute Ares Story: Ares is good at knowing when you're feeling sad. When he senses that, he'll usually come over and try to comfort you and rub up against you. Why is Ares Being Rehomed? My partner and I will be relocating in the near future, and the cats aren't able to come with us when we go, so we're seeking to find them a good home before we leave. Ares's Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be: I would love a family that is able to give a lot of attention to Ares and possibly with other animals to love and play with. He loves having little spaces (low and high) to observe from and to nap in. He also used to have a patio to sit on where he could lounge outside in the sun, so I would love that for him, if possible.

NAME: Ava Taylor AGE: Twenty-seven BIRTHPLACE: New York City, USA OCCUPATION: Founder of The Magical Millennial
EDUCATION: Salem Witches’ Institute BLOOD STATUS: Half-blood WAND SPECS: 11 ¾" in length, cypress wood with a unicorn hair core BOGGART: A rougarou, a common antagonist in childrens’ bedtime stories over in America. Ava refuses to travel to the southern states for this very reason. PATRONUS: Jack Russell Terrier
HISTORY: Born to English parents living in New York City, Ava was raised by two artists and had an exceptionally liberal upbringing. Whether it was because they were foreign or because their minds were clouded with psychedelia, Ava always felt like she was floating between realities; never understanding what was but instead always dreaming of what could be. Her father, the front man of a rock band, was hardly in the picture growing up and mostly left her mother to tend to their three daughters. Mrs. Taylor was a free-spirited albeit negligent mother. Her idea of good care was leaving the oldest to watch the youngest while she tended to her art, which changed frequently: painting, papier-mâché, quilting, music, interior design. Of course, Mrs. Taylor was never abusive in any way.. to be abusive, one would have to be present. Ava learned so much from her once she was old enough to understand the space she was coming from and the depth of her artful disposition but until that time, Ava was left to raise herself and her two younger sisters.
Luckily, her father’s band had come into success by the time Ava came along and she never got to experience the feeling of being without. Her father was able to afford sending his three children back to London for their primary education. Attending an art school, the Taylor girls were able to learn an array of mediums, diversifying their skills just as their mother did. With their parents displaced across the ocean in New York City, the three sisters lived in a matchbox-sized flat with their maternal Aunt Daisy. Aunt Daisy was especially strange (even more so than Mrs. Taylor) and Ava now toys with the possibility that she may have suffered from mental illness. More interested in her social life than her nieces, the three were mostly left to their own devices and were forced to rely only on one another.
Returning to New York only twice a year (once for Christmas, once for the summer), it came as an abrupt surprise when Ava’s mother insisted they be brought back to New York City before Ava started Secondary. Mrs. Taylor couldn’t provide a reasonable explanation as to why. Two weeks after their arrival, Ava received an invitation from Salem Witches’ Institute to begin her magical education. The three girls stared at the letter wide-eyed and without skepticism. Mrs. Taylor reacted with conspicuous laughter that failed to hide her discomfort, like she knew something they didn’t. It was when Mrs. Taylor was pressed for answers by a curious Ava and a confused husband did she finally reveal that she came from a family of witches and wizards--that magic ran in her blood. Bringing her children to New York City couldn’t hide that.
Mrs. Taylor’s upbringing had always been a dubious topic of conversation in their household. Her story frequently changed. Once she claimed she was a part of a traveling circus when she met her future husband, another time she said she was a penniless painter who was raised on the streets of London. While Ava was never able to get the details in full, her mother did reveal that she was previously Miss Kathryn Greenwood. The Greenwoods were of a dwindling elite status of wizards. Mrs. Taylor explained that she had become estranged from them years ago; her father was something called a ‘Death Eater’ and had been sent to prison for helping murder Muggles and Muggle-born wizards. Both Mr. Greenwood and his only son died while serving a life sentence, leaving Mrs. Taylor and her older sister the last living members of the Greenwood family.
It seemed as if Mrs. Taylor was intending on keeping the three Taylor girls engulfed in Muggle magic (art) to keep them as far away from wizarding magic as she possibly could, perhaps to protect them from the dark secret she left in England. Her efforts came at a high cost, however, as her failure to tell the truth of her origin was the final straw that ruined her marriage and left her children distant, realizing they did not know their own mother.
After Ava left for school, her two younger sisters, Poppy and Clara, soon followed. Previously seen as the odd ball out with her affinity for the strange, Ava now had a safe haven where she could explore the strange and feel no scorn for doing so. The three Taylor girls were exceptional students. Influenced both by Muggle fashion and the practical lives of most magical folks, Poppy began her career designing practical, contemporary robes for young witches. Poppy decided to open up a shop in London, collecting vintage pieces and working them to fit the modern magic scene. It was there it was discovered that the Greenwood name still held a great deal of notoriety (and the fate of its remaining members mystified since the 1980s) and what remained of their reputation made Poppy quite successful.
Up until this point, Ava had been working in a Muggle office as a freelance editor of chumpy news articles. She was wasting her talent and, essentially, her precious time. And though Ava didn’t know what she wanted next, she just knew that she wanted something else. And that, suddenly, wasn’t available in New York City. Ava followed her younger sister back to to England, inspired by her Poppy’s inventive/forward thinking, and decided that she was going to make her mark on the magical community - starting with London.
Not at all adverse to riding her sister’s coattails - and the coattails of her distantly deceased relatives, for that matter - Ava decided that she wanted to start an editorial documenting the cultural changes happening within the wizarding community. The Ministry of Magic was really good at veiling the cultural advancements of their young generations, most notably the demand of legislation supporting the civil rights of oppressed magical creatures. What started as a small-time blog while working part-time at Poppy’s store turned into a massive, collaborative online paper that became the main source of cultural information for magical millennials.
Today, Ava is often under much scrutiny by the Minsitry of Magic and conservative wizards for her prying into legal affairs and promoting the rebellious tendencies of today’s generation. She is either loved or hated; either way, she will persist.
See Ava’s family bio here.
POSITIVE TRAITS:
OUTGOING: She is a painful extrovert in that she is overzealous and eager in social interactions, often bearing heavy on those which she may cross paths. This is great because Ava usually turns into the life of the party once everyone is on their second round of drinks but is arguably a negative in day-to-day conversation. ADVENTUROUS: She’ll try anything once. Ava was raised by the two most laid-back, easy-going parents a child could ask for and thus she has a brilliantly brave disposition. Exotic foods, adrenaline sports.. oh, a petting zoo for dragons? Sign her up! KIND: Experiencing quite a bit of emotional torment in school as a young girl, Ava likes to be actively inclusive and so she tends to be very warm towards everyone. While it is a genuine trait, sometimes it is expressed superficially and Ava is kind towards others how she sees fit rather than in a way that they really need. She has well-intentions, either way.
NEGATIVE TRAITS:
ECCENTRIC: Ava is eclectic weird. Despite being knowledgeable of fashion and brand trends, she is the type of person who thinks pairing patterns is totally okay. She communicates with air quotes and the occasional verbal emoji; an irritation to some but perhaps quirky to others. FLIGHTY: Ava is also undeniably oblivious to the plight of others. Not in a way that is totally unaware but simply in a way that leaves her vague in others’ interests and it could be that, in spite of being a generally kind person, she tends to be slightly self-involved. This may be why she has yet to have any long-term romantic relationships and how she easily discontinued the friendships left behind in New York. PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE: While she is quite chipper for the most part, Ava is not one to easily shrug off an offense once it is out in the open. Her retaliation is never outright and certainly never physical, but her wit is scathing - to say the least. She tries not to fall into the game of underhanded insults but quickly reigns as the queen once she is pushed to that point. Some may describe her as slightly vindictive, as well.

Hyperallergic: The Japanese American Architect Who Was a Disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright
The Lurie House, designed by Kaneji Domoto (photo by Thad Russel)
When a Columbia University architecture professor signed the contract for her new house in Usonia — the historic community near Pleasantville, New York, that was planned by Frank Lloyd Wright — its previous owner handed her four of its original blueprints. They’d been drawn up by the late Kaneji Domoto, a little-known Japanese-American architect from the Bay Area. Having inherited one of his homes, Lynnette Widder decided to learn more about Domoto and his practice. Her journey led her to rediscover one of Wright’s students through oral histories from his family members, who’d also saved his sketches, photographs, and blueprints.

The culmination of her research is a small exhibition she curated at the Center for Architecture that celebrates the career of the only Japanese American to leave a mark on the famed Usonia. Kaneji Domoto at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonia examines Domoto’s contribution to Wright’s suburban community, where the houses were meant to be affordable, beautiful, sustainable, and unique. Of the 47 homes built on the 100 acres of land, Domoto designed five that came to fruition.
The exhibition features mostly drawings by Domoto that are difficult for the untrained eye to understand, but they’re accompanied by clear explanatory texts and contemporary as well as period photographs of the buildings’ exteriors and interiors. There’s also an original model of Domoto’s first and largest Usonian house, the Bier House, an 1,800-square-foot structure built in 1949 and set into a sloping site. Its layout recalls one of Wright’s most famous works, Fallingwater, with a spacious living room wrapped around a large hearth and open ceilings with skylights.
Widder had procured the Lurie House, another one of Domoto’s earliest homes at Usonia. Built the same year as the Bier House, it exemplifies the architect’s reputation for listening carefully to his clients and responding to their needs — traits that made him stand out. For Mrs. Lurie, who was less than five feet tall, he built a kitchen with counters as high as tabletops; the two young girls in the family received separate rooms that mirrored each other identically, with a folding plywood door dividing them. The living space was intended to be bright yet cool, featuring windows that stretch from floor to ceiling and a cantilevered eave that faces south. A display of the house’s construction documents on the Center for Architecture’s mezzanine level offers a closer look at its anatomy, using it as a case study to consider how one might preserve a Domoto home today. It features reproductions of the blueprints Widder inherited.

Meanwhile, at the Harris House, which was built around the same time as well, Domoto put an enameled kitchen sink in the bathroom so his clients, an orthodox Jewish family, could keep kosher. The large Bier House features a formal dining room unlike those of the other four homes, since its original owners, an exuberant doctor and his wife, liked to entertain. Their living room was a dramatic split-level space that boasted high ceilings.
Domoto was also known for respecting his client’s budgets — something Wright himself did not always manage to do. The three houses the renowned architect built at Usonia all ended up costing significantly more than they were supposed to, Widder said.
“If you look at Wright’s Usonian houses, the premise of these houses is that they were accessible for the middle class,” Widder told Hyperallergic. “They were lower cost, easier to build, and easier for contractors to understand. But there are a lot of indications that those actually weren’t Wright’s foremost concerns … If you were really trying to make something affordable, you would constrain yourself to the industry standard. Wright does not do that.”
Domoto, however, was strictly economical, using low-cost materials and techniques that were relatively new to the market. He embraced plywood as an interior finish, illuminated spaces with strip fluorescent lighting, and used steel pipes to make the handrails of staircases.
“Domoto embraces a whole bunch of readily available industry products and bends them to his will,” Widder said. “You see him taking an idiom that he learned that he credits Wrights with having taught him, but moves it into a kind of construction that’s completely different.”

Domoto also stood out from the other Usonian architects for his strong identification with Japanese traditions, particularly the Japanese landscape. The exhibition features a large timeline that summarizes how his particular life experiences influenced his practice. Born in 1912 and raised in northern California, Domoto spent years working as a nurseryman in his family’s landscaping business, which was the largest in the Bay Area. The job taught him about Japanese environmental culture, which he integrated into many of his projects. At the same time, he was distant from other aspects of his heritage. He didn’t see woodblock prints or hear Japanese poetry until 1939, when he arrived at Taliesin, Wright’s school of architecture. Tellingly, Domoto was adamant about referring to himself as American Japanese.
In 1941, he was among the tens of thousands of citizens interned as part of Executive Order 9066. He became a member of the construction crew at the camp in Amache, Colorado — work he credited with having taught him methods of building. Two years later, he was released and moved to New York, where he found work as an architect and draughtsman.

Domoto was part of Usonia’s building committee for about two years, until he and Wright had a severe falling out. Claiming that Domoto’s work was derivative, the American architect vetoed one of his projects in 1950; Domoto broke off from the community. His response, measured yet heavy with frustration, is on display in the exhibition. It includes the lines: “An Idea is never born fully grown. You have given me an Idea but at the same time would kill it before it can grow.”
Wright “got on the wrong side of all [the Usonian architects],” Widder said. “For whatever reason, Domoto was the one who took it most to heart and the one who walked away from Usonia, until after Wright was no longer on the building commission.”
When Domoto returned a few years later, he served as a landscape consultant and built two houses, which both feature very literal references to Japanese architecture. The Silson House recalls a shogun temple, with its axial symmetry and steep roof overhangs; the Siegel house features sliding Shoji screens and a koi pond in its garden.

Nearly all of the houses at Usonia have been expanded in the last few decades, but the exhibition offers a chance to study the original spatial and material efficiency of some of Domoto’s homes. Featuring deep overhangs and radiant floor heat, and typically oriented to the south or southwest, Domoto’s relatively small houses represent early testing grounds for environmental design measures we might easily recognize today.
“There are enough studies that show it’s not just the amount of stuff we own and the decreased cost of stuff that have a huge environmental impact,” Widder said. “It’s totally facilitated by the size of houses we live in now and their environmental implications.
“There’s a sweet spot in this moment that these modest houses are being built, and I find that very compelling.”
