It doesn’t matter - a succession of 25 stories of how much things do matter, despite Remus’ insistence of otherwise.

i always interpreted lily and james as having a bit of a pride and prejudice thing going on — he was very principled and even well-intentioned but was also a dick, she wasn’t wrong to acknowledge this but had a tendency to make snap judgements and never change them, even as people themselves changed or she learned new context. they grew up, she kept rejecting him and calling out his behavior (and post-SWM it wasn’t even because she was defending her friend, which i think kicked james in the pants a bit, because he’d been writing off her criticisms in the past) and he realized he did need to work on that part of himself, though he didn’t give it up entirely or become a different person. and on lily’s side i think realizing how bigoted severus had grown to be without her really noticing similarly jolted her to look more carefully at the people around her and make fresh judgements on them, which led to a more positive view of james. and seeing as pride and prejudice remains one of the greatest love stories ever told, i will never buy into any anti-jily sentiments 😌😌

honestly I have never in my life read pride and prejudice, nor even seen any film adaptations, so idk! tbh it doesn't really appeal to me personally (nor does austen and regency-era historical romance in general) but from what I know it's a similar basic story, aka they argue and then they're in love. it could also be compared to much ado about nothing if u like.

it is true that there seems to be overlap between jily fandom and people who like pride and prejudice. i remember back in the golden days of jily EVERYONE was into the lizzie bennet diaries. and there was like 3 redheads on that series (they were the sisters which ig makes sense) and all of them were fancast as lily lmao. good times.

Jily, kinktober, praise kink, and a surprisingly mild nsfw fic.

Lily is laughing.

The sound is not new to James; when they were just friends, he'd make a fool of himself to earn that laugh, and now that they've started dating, the sound greets him guiltlessly. He loves when Lily laughs because of the way her eyes shine and her cheeks colour.

But she is not laughing because of him at the moment.

It’s not that he demands exclusivity; if she is happy, that’s all that matters, but... but the source of her happiness is wagging his tail as he runs back to her, proudly holding the tennis ball that Lily had thrown a good distance.

And Lily, who knows exactly the secrets of this black dog, just kneels when Padfoot reaches her.

"Who is a good boy?" She coes, rubbing his ears. The dog barks loud and Lily laughs, delighted. "Who is the best boy?"

She holds the dog's face; James sees her fingers threading through the dark fur, not very unlike how she run her hand through his hair last night as he went down on her--

Only he didn’t get called a good boy.

And all Sirius got her was a stupid tennis ball.

He scowls. The dog looks at him for a moment, with far more intelligence than any mongrel should have, and then lies on the ground, belly up, whining; suggestive. Maybe James should pout more, because this strategy clear works for the dog: Lily kneels, rubbing the dog's belly; Padfoot is drooling.

"Who is a good boy?" A bark. People around them are chuckling. "You are, yes, you are a good boy!"

The dog licks her face; James buries his nails on the palm of his hands to keep from hexing the dog.

"Oh, you are not a good boy now!" But Lily's voice is playful.

James decides he's had enough. "He just needs to be neutered," he notes dryly. The dog growls at him. "Go play fetch," he says, and throws the tennis ball far away. When the dog just stares at him, James adds challengingly, "A real good boy would catch it."

As he expected, Padfoot rises at this, and very dignifiedly, runs through the grounds. A few people stop to watch the dog.

"Stags are more impressive," he mumbles. If only he could transform now, everyone would see it...

Lily wraps her arm on his. "Maybe we could have a dog."

"I am more of a cat person."

"Since when?"

Since seeing you with a dog made me insanely jealous. "Cats aren’t good boys."

"Oh." She turns to him now, with a smirk sprouting on her pink lips, and James almost wishes she couldn’t see through him so easily. "No one ever accused James Potter of being a good boy."

Her finger traces his arm, leaving goosebumps on its path.

"There’s always a first time for everything," he whispers, taking a step closer.

Lily's hand now circle James' neck befire she holds it softly. "A good boy would wear a collar."

"I would look dashing with a collar."

"A good boy would obey every order."

"Hmmm. I could be a good boy."

"You never saw an order you didn’t want to break, James."

"Maybe I just need some positive reinforcement, Lily."

"Hmmm," she sighs back. "I could offer enough praise. Add some treats." She throws a quick glance around. "Do you really want that ball back?"

"The dog can keep it."

"Good." She offers her hand. "Let’s go see how much of a good boy you are."

He is pretty sure he might howl if she asks.

okay so full transparency: i've never really read much fic. i don't have a ton of free time set aside for creative/recreational purposes and the time i do have, i use to write because that just fills me up a lot more. however, i made a commitment to consume more fan-created work in 2024 and i succeeded in that!!! there were still periods where i wasn't able to read much, which has lead to an ever-growing tbr, but i wanted to take a moment at the beginning of this new year to share a hodge-podge of some (completed) fics that wow'ed me this year. a great deal of these are several years old and likely 'old news,' but i got to experience their magic for the first time in 2024 and want to spend some time showing them some love!!! in no particular order:

in losing grip by @keep--driving - 2024 was the year of me learning to love a good second chances au. this fic has all the trope-y goodness you could ever want, along with toe-curling kiss scenes, the perfect kind of humour that makes you squeal into your pillow or porridge or wherever you find yourself, and characters that you just love and root for so easily. i especially loved her take on james and lily's mums and the ways they navigate the world with and beside their children. i read a large chunk of this fic on my kindle as i pushed a stroller this autumn and i will forever associate it with peace and calmness. i'll be re-reading it soon!!!

i love you (ain't that the worst thing you ever heard) by lizardcookie - enter: the other trope i fell in love with in 2024—failed friends with benefits. the way this fic deals with grief in such a poignant, devastating, incredible way had my jaw on the floor. yes there is sexy jily, but there is also giggly jily and insecure jily and scared jily and earnest jily and oh mannnn this is the good ish. the small detail of lily coming around to sirius and james both through her help with the flying motorbike. i love the minute breakdown of lily's thick walls until they come tumbling down and james is right there, waiting, as he always is, patient and Good.

i would drink a case of you, darling by treacherous_talks - one of the tags on this fic is "a good old fashioned 'lily and james get together fic' because there aren't enough of them" so obviously i was in from the jump. this magical fic does such an excellent job at highlighting exactly what it means to be a teenager with a crush on another teenager who you think has a crush on you but you're not completely sure and so you can't ruin it because what if you're wrong. that is such a jily sweet spot i don't often see done as well as it is in this fic!!!

poison of trust by soopsiedaisies - not a jily fic! gasp! in fact, it's remus and sirius (not wolfstar) who are actually not usually as compelling a relationship as some of the other marauder era possibilities. but this fic made me eat my words because it is delicious. the part that i literally included in my ao3 bookmark and that i think about all the time is when remus tries to accuse sirius of equating harry and james and sirius says, oooooh i have chills thinking about it, "i dare you to finish that sentence." YES guarddog sirius black! his position as sole protector of the potter family will never not be important to me and this fic highlights that in such a unique and compelling way.

bad day wall by @apalapucian - there's nothing i could say about this incredible fic that hasn't been said, and recently, but truly—jayne is such a phenomenal wordsmith. this has a dash of 'texting fic,' but make it canon compliant and so beautiful it makes you wanna diiiiiie. the blackevans is unmatched, of course. but james's head-over-heels-ness for lily also has to be mentioned. i love every single one of his batty contributions to the bad day wall as he mopes and wades through all the chaos of trying (and failing) to get over lily evans.

The Guide to Becoming a Better Man for Lily Evans by bronzeagepizzeria - the shirtless james potter agenda is quite special to me, which needs to be stated right out the gate, really. the shirtless james potter who is shirtless on purpose just to get under his dream girl's skin agenda is an ascension i have yet to come back down from.

Of Chrysalism by @maraudersftw - i shall give you this, line, dangling on a stick as a perfectly buttered and garlic'ed (??) carrot, enticing you to cast your cares aside and come read this fic: "He’s spoilt, and persistent, and endearing, and she’s hopeless." like??????? yeah. okay. sure. i'll pretend that i'm capable of returning from that in this lifetime. but actually: james "my feelings matter, too" potter is so important and i love the agency this fic gives him!!!

Scenes from a Hogsmeade Pub by @bcdaily - i think i read this years ago. perhaps. idk i was basically a baby when it was published in 2012. but i recently stumbled upon it (again? maybe?) and just absolutely devoured it. this is quintessential jily to me, in each iteration, as they grow and learn each other and finally, finally, finally choose each other. each of these scenes is so carefully crafted to showcase really important moments in their relationship, but does it using really unimportant moments, which is genius. it's the grand fromage of showing, not telling, and this would absolutely be the first week assigned reading on my syllabus if i got to live out my dream as a professor on jily.

say goodbye to my heart tonight by spinawren - my bookmark for this was literally just "SQUEEEEEEE" and i don't exactly know what i meant by that, but i think it's more eloquent than anything i could come up with here. the premise of this fic is genius: james and lily repeatedly having 'one-night stands' with each other until they realise they've accidentally started dating. but james potter's devotion to being in lily evans' presence is what makes this fic belong on the top shelf!

Bluebird by ocean_away - whewwww, this fic knocked me back in a way i didn't expect. it's a second chances fic of a different calibre all around, but what stands out to me the most in this particular fic is the way james and lily are both shown to so seamlessly grow. they begin as two broken, purposefully hurtful individuals (read: teenagers) and become young adults who choose goodness and each other over and over, even though it's not easy. i feel proud of them, when i read this fic. what a labour of love for our favourite couple.

The Way the Light Looks by @stonecoldhedwig - i have nothing more to say about this fic than this: BEST KISS SCENE I HAVE EVER AND WILL EVER READ!!!!!!!!!!!

Whispers in the Dark by @yallthemwitches - okayyyy so it's difficult to choose just one of tay's fics, but this is such a stand-out to me. friends to lovers!!!! james "but i've never lied to you" potter, i want to kiss you on the MOUTH! he's so earnest, so pure, so "no actually i just wanted to see you" when he has no business being such a sweetheart. honourable mention: the beyond-precious proposal scene at the end.

Love is Complicated by @theesteemedladydebourgh - this fic feels like sitting in the most beautiful library in the world watching rain trail down the ornate, darkened windows—and then the hottest professor on earth walks up to you and snogs you without preamble. except it's made better by the fact that he is somehow both james potter and an indiana jones variant? listen. just read it. then squeal and kick your feet with me, okay?

Sunshine in my Eyes by monroeslittle - another fic i devoured on my kindle this year (but definitely not during standardised testing at school when i was supposed to be actively monitoring teenagers for academic integrity and technically signed an oath that i locked all my electronics in the closet). ahem. this is some of the most rewarding angst i have ever read, which is genuinely some of the highest praise i could ever bestow on someone. lily going to james for lessons on how to kiss and the entire scene that follows will follow me forever. they're so endearing and sweet and did not deserve all they went through. but. angst with a happy ending xx

december jily bingo: buying presents @jilychallenge

Lily walked around the shopping centre, arms filled with Mary's bags she had dumped with her before hurrying off to the next clothing store.

She glanced down to her list, and sighed as she realised the only name not crossed off was Petunia. Lily glanced to the stores nearby before spotting a tacky christmas themed store and immediately heading to it.

As she stepped foot into the store, her eyes immediately caught sight of christmas themed china set. Each various plate and bowl and cup was covered in elaborate patterns. Petunia would hate it.

Lily dashed over to buy it.

"Hey!" A man shouted, as she picked it up. He ran over to her.

She frowned at him, "What?"

"I was going to buy that!"

"Well... you didn't."

The man huffed, pushing his large glasses back up slightly, "My mum would love it so much."

Lily snorted, "Seriously? This?"

He shrugged, "Yeah."

Lily frowned, "Do you hate her or something?"

"What? Of course not!"

"Well, I was only going to get this because my sister's a bitch and she'll hate this."

The man glanced to the china set, "What's wrong with it? It's christmas-y. Perfect present."

Lily sighed, "Okay well, fine you have the set but please take my advice and also get your mum something else."

"Okay?" The man said, picking up the china set.

Lily looked around the rest of the store for a bit, but seeing nothing else she hated enough to give to Petunia, she left.

As she began to walk away, the man ran after.

"Hey, wait up!" He jogged till he caught up, "I was wondering if you could help me choose something else for my mum."

Lily huffed, "I don't work for you, I've got my own shopping to do."

"Well", The man grinned widely, catching Lily's attention, "You could help me find something great for my mum, and I could help you find something bad for your sister. Deal?"

Lily thought about it for a moment, "You do seem to have an eye for terrible presents."

He laughed, "Exactly!"

"Fine", she nodded, "We'll help each other.

"I'm James", he grinned again, tousling his hair as he spoke.

"I'm Lily", she smiled.

lovely LOVELY dedicated loyal readers.

i am continually astounded that my inbox still receives message of support and curiosity about my lil fanfic These Lines of Lightning. i can’t even begin to talk about the fact that a lot of you just drop messages to say you hope i am well. you are just wonderful. and i owe you an answer in that i am here, doing well, just living a very different and busy life!

i am pretty sure i started writing TLOL in 2019. my life and the world were in such different places. the same applies to you guys! we’ve all LIVEDDDD. but i LOVED writing the fic. i loved maybe even more how much excitement you guys had for it. the marauders will always be my roman empire.

truth is i am not sure how to continue writing it. i have tried MANY times. there are so so many drafts of the next chapter in existence. i did not want to write a crap, slap dash ending to this fic as that would betray my hours of work into making it something we all enjoyed. so i sort of let it float in the ether. unfinished, like all the classic jily fics really.

but BOO to that.

so what now? my real aim is to not leave TLOL in the fanfic graveyard. i feel that realistically i can write a maximum of three chapters to finish the story. i want to do it for you all. there are thousands of fantastic marauders fics out there but you still wanted to read mine.

i don’t know if anyone has recently read the end of last chapter (a cliffhanger, that was so cruel of me), but i am going to time jump a measly month into the future, going back and forth. this seems to be the only thing that will obliterate the chokehold writer’s block has on TLOL and get the damn job DONE.

if you are still here and care, i cannot thank you enough for the way you have encouraged my writing. let’s f-cking go! if anyone has any real highlight moments from the fic that they’d love a recall to, let me know!

It's got a well-rounded plot and great world-building with incredible characterisations. The interpersonal communication between James and Lily does a great job of acknowledging how James, while being physically present was emotionally absent. The author explores his grief and makes it a point to note that while it explains his behaviour, it doesn’t excuse it. Despite this, through it all, I was rooting for them. Also, the relationship between the Black brothers was so well written. All of the side characters felt valuable to the story and were dynamic. Overall a really good read! Shout out to big brother Harry and baby Gracie ❤︎ ❤︎ ❤︎

Bear in mind if you’re actually following I Solemnly Swear is the last part of chapter 64. Mainly posted for anyone who is not following the story but just wants some baby jily in their lives:

'Hiya Evans,' Potter beamed at her.

What on earth was James Potter doing in her and Severus' compartment.

'You're not...' Lily began uncertainly. She didn't want to be rude, but she wasn't sure she had any politeness in her for Potter.

'No,' Potter shook his head. 'We've got a compartment further down. I just saw you through the window and thought I'd say hi.'

A likely tale. James Potter had turned up in their compartment for the sole purpose of annoying Severus, if Lily was going to take a guess. Judging by Severus' expression, which kept alternating between confusion, horror and just plain nothing, it was working.

'Alright, you've said hi.'

'So I have,' Potter grinned.

'And now I am going to say goodbye.'

Potter shrugged.

'Goodbye,' Lily said pointedly when Potter didn't move.

'Bye, Evans.'

Potter left the compartment door open. Lily got up to close it, hoping she'd seen the last of Potter, when he reappeared. She took a step back.

'You're okay, right?' Potter asked as he filled the compartment door.

James Potter might genuinely be the most annoying person she had ever had the misfortune to meet.

'Why?'

Lily hadn't realised she'd crossed her arms.

Potter shrugged again: 'Just... you were a lot friendlier on Thursday.'

'I'm fine, Potter,' Lily gritted out. 'Now will you please leave?'

'Alright. Alright. You're good, clearly,' James said, casting a sceptical look over at where Lily knew Severus was sitting. 'Got to dash anyways. See you around, Evans.'

She was going to kill Potter. Lily might genuinely kill him. It was completely and utterly obvious to her that Potter had not come to say hello to her. Potter had been there to antagonise Severus. The arrogant -

'What did Potter mean by saying that you were friendlier on Thursday?' Severus interrupted her thoughts. 'You were in Ireland, weren't you?'

Severus looked hurt. Betrayed even.

'I had no choice,' Lily hurried to explain. 'I... Maeve invited him over to play Quidditch. I couldn't very well say no, could I?'

Sitting down opposite her best friend, she met his eyes, willing Severus to see just how much she hadn't wanted to spend any time with Potter. It was stupid, really. People couldn't read each other's mind.

Severus knew her, though. For that matter, he knew enough about Potter too to know she would never have wanted to spend a minute more than necessary in his company.

'Sev, you know I think he's a spoiled, good-for-nothing, arrogant toerag.'

Severus nodded once - it was almost imperceptible, but it was all Lily needed. Hopefully they could forget all about Potter.

'I bet he was showing off a great deal,' Severus scowled.

Maybe not.

'He was showing off his new broom,' Lily agreed cautiously.

'Top of the range, I suppose?'

'Of course,' Lily sighed.

'His parents are loaded.'

Severus had told her this many times.

'Good for them.'

Why did it matter that his parents were rich? Gold was never going to buy that boy an ounce of anything that really mattered.

'He -'

'Listen,' Lily cut Severus off. 'Can we talk about something else?' Once classes started she would have to endure Potter and Black every day for hours at a time. 'I've not seen you for two weeks.'

Severus looked stricken. Then his face relaxed.

'Sure.'

Silence.

'Okay...' Lily said, searching for something to talk about.

Severus might have allowed her to move the conversation away from Potter, but it was Lily who would have to have to do the heavy lifting.

'Did you read anything interesting while I was away?'

Lily had been about to ask if Severus had done anything interesting over the last two weeks, but she could guess the answer. It wasn't the sort of thing he should have to admit to.

'Yes, I did,' said Severus, and Lily noticed how everything about her best friend had seemed to change.

Gone were the last traces of annoyance of having been disturbed by Potter. Severus was sitting tall, his dark eyes shining fervently and he reminded Lily so much of the Severus she had met who had been eager to tell her all about Hogwarts.

'Alright, so what was it about?' Lily asked.

Within 10 minutes she wished she hadn't asked the question.

'Are you not worried that's a bit dark?' Lily asked.

'It's powerful magic,' Severus agreed, his face hardening a little. 'I am sure people like Potter would consider it dark, but that's because it pushes the boundaries of traditional magic. He doesn't have the imagination or talent to explore this branch of magic, I am sure.'

'But '- Lily started, not finding Severus' answer reassuring in the slightest.

As far as Lily was concerned, if the magic was considered dark by someone who liked hexing people for fun, then it was absolutely bad.

'Magic is about how you use it,' Severus interrupted her, sounding a little impatient. 'Even the simplest spell can be used for dangerous measures. Take the severing charm - you wouldn't want anyone to cast that at you - it can be really dangerous, but it was invented as an easy way of cutting cloth and thread.'

'I suppose,' said Lily, but she decided to change the topic nonetheless.

I was the one who requested the poly jily nightmare imagine and I just wanted to say 10/10 did put me to sleep in the BEST way so thank you <3 I wanted to put in one more poly jily x reader request if thats ok.. (if not just skip this bit) my request was something a bit more angsty/hurt/comfort where reader feels out of place in the relationship. since lily and james's relationship is more established(if thats makes sense?) and reader feels distant. Just lots of reassurance and fluff with a dash of the previously 3 mentioned themes lol
